- In this chapter, Patrick and Richard finish the walking part of the expedition. They build a boat to go down the Fly River, stock up on supplies, and start paddling.
In not too long, they accidentally drift into Indonesia and run into a rebel militia.

@ElijahMFearon I'm just being realistic and neutral . Independence requires recognition from various countries including superpowers, countries that carried out "occupation" in this case Indonesia, the United Nations and other countries.
and the fact is that almost all countries in the world including permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) recognize that West Papua is part of the province of Indonesia. not to mention that the US as a politically strong country has a strong interest in Papua and evidence of that strong interest lies in mining
company named Freeport meanwhile, the separatist or freedom fighter group itself clearly rejects US interests there and that's why the US will clearly be on the Indonesian side as well as China which has invested billions of dollars in Papua. that's what makes West Papua so far from independence

That is correct. West Papua called Irian Jaya by Indonesia is a different country from Sandaun or East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea

Sailed up the Fly to Kiunga and hitched to the Ok Tedi mine, then hitched a lift on a Milne Bay Air plane to Wewak in 1997. Have photos and a bit of video of Kiunga if you're interested.

Papau New Guinea don't have any rebels. These rebels are from West Papua (Papua), that is a province in Indonesia and have been fighting for their freedom to gain independence and the fight is still going on.

We have rebels everywhere in New Guinea Islands. very active in Highlands region, western province, west sepik sandaun province and Bougainville province as well. All rebels fight for a cause for freedom and liberty from Government oppression. No need to justify yourself and feel good.

The Island is New Guinea not Papua New Guinea. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half and the western side is Irian Jaya which is a province of Indonesia.

The land mass was a complete one called Island of New Guinea but, when the British colonise the Eastern side (PNG) they created that border which separates us from them (West Papua) back then. Our ancestors dont have any border with them. They are still part of us, the Melanesians but that have changed coz of that border. We should have unite with them to become one country.🇵🇬

Indonesia will not allow independence west papua for 2 reasons. Firstly, Indonesia get revenue from the resources. The American's operat the largest gold mine in the world, Freeport & pay royalties to Indonesian government. America & Australia train/arm the Indonesian military who are deployed in west Papua. Secondly Indonesia need land for their huge expanding population. Tens of thousands of Indonesians are been encouraged to move to west Papua to live. International governments turn a blind eye because of their mining interests in west Papua. So unfortunately, the west papuans are on their own. Approximately half a million west papuans have been murdered since the take over from the Dutch.
