It has been a while since I’ve reviewed a Timex on the channel so I’m really happy to bring not one but TWO Timex Marlin watches in front of the camera where I review them side by side to determine, is this model still relevant in 2023 or has the hype died down since it’s original reissue date in 2017? Let me know what you think down in the comments! 👇👇👇
Been wearing my 34mm "art deco" reissue almost daily for over two years. Washing dishes, gardening, formal dinners, and so much more. It's the perfect watch. I wear it on a vintage JB Champion scissor expansion band. Classic
Timex for me has always made me think of growing up in the UK in the 1970 my first watch and maybe my last watch in many years' time always makes me smile thinking of sunny hot days we have a few and my mum I am not a hugger as my wife's family tell me but when a simple watch can take me to a place of emotion for an old man that's not a bad day great content as always
Jason, thank you for this comment. Sharing of memories like this always bring a smile to my face and heart. The fact watches can take us back to those special moments and draw upon memories of our youth is what makes them so intriguing to me. I appreciate you taking time to post on my video. Have a great weekend! 😎🙌
Sold my bambino 38mm to fund the 34mm. Much more charm and cool factor for me. Orient didn’t take enough risks and looked flat if the light did not catch it properly. The champagne dial on this perfectly contrast the stainless steel and the black hands it is very eye catching 40mm is okay!
Hey JJ! I can relate 100% same with my dad and grandpa! Seiko watches as well! I am looking forward to see any new releases planned from Timex as well! Thanks for commenting, hope you have a great day brother! 😎🙌
I really like the art deco one! It's got more personality than the other one. You know from afar that it's a Timex Marlin, worn by a watch enthusiast. Your gold one would look great on the strapsco suede in green!
Yeah! It does stand out amongst the watch enthusiasts for sure! I recognize that dial and case shape instantly when out and about haha! I really like the green and gold combo too, definitely my fav! Thanks for checking it out and sharing your thoughts Eve! 😎🙌
I had aTimex in the 1960s that was licked in a week. now I collect Sea-Gull watches and watches with seagull movements. I like the Marlin reissue with the Seagull St6 movement. I will buy one .
I absolutely love 34mm one. It's basically "out for dinner" watch, where you just pick it up, set the time, whine it and go. No dates, no accuracy measurements, no watch winders and all that shenanigans. Affordable with heritage. For that Madison Man look... its fantastic!
Well said, you nailed it with that example of it being a grab and go piece! I personally couldn’t drive it daily but absolutely can see it as an evening piece for a nice dinner any day of the week. Thanks for checking out my review and sharing your comment! Cheers! 😎🍻🙌
Great video bro. It really speaks to me because I own both of these watches, and have done for the last three and a half years. So I suppose I am biased but I think they are definitely relevant, at least in my collection and on my wrist. Particularly in my native Australia, where not that many people have a timex. And if they do, they will be models that have come out more recently, Q Timex Pepsi GMTs and such. I feel like timex started their resurgence and trend of reissues with these Marlins though, what seems like longer ago than it actually is. I feel like they are the OG new age of timex. Honestly, I didn’t think anyone would release any more videos about them, so I was really pleased to see this one pop up from none other than you. The automatic Marlin got me back into watch collecting. Not only that but it made me get into “true” watch collecting, essentially ignited a proper in-depth nerdy interest in watches in general which is still going strong to this day. I didn’t know anything about timex at the time, but while surfing online I spied the automatic with the burgundy dial and oxblood strap. Remember that one? Instantly in love. My noobie innocent eyes had never known a watch like that. Now that I have more perspective, the retail price was probably a bit steep, though I managed to get mine 30% off. I didn’t realise how much of a basic movement the 8215 was, and that acrylic was cheap. And the other thing was that they slapped the same price on every model, even though they had some fairly vital differences. For example, burgundy dials are hard to come by, at least ones that are well-executed. Definitely stood out among the other iterations released at the time. But perhaps the biggest example is that the strap was amazing. Still is one of the best I own. Timex had gone through the trouble of going to S.B. Foot Tanning Co. in Redwing Minnesota, where apparently Redwing Shoes are made? Anyway, what a detail. Not sure they have continued to do this with later iterations of the auto marlin. The certainly didn’t have their branding on the art deco Marlin strap anyway. I just couldn’t resist going for the Marlin Art Deco though, a few months later. I loved the dial design and the numerals, and I definitely have the small wrist to pull it off. I actually went for the one that was marketed for women, in the rose gold. I swapped the white strap out and put a black croc on, and it’s a beaut. Quality control wasn’t great on that one. The plating on some of the indices is either grubby or not applied correctly, but it’s not so noticeable. I agree with your analysis of both, couldn’t have put it better myself. By no means perfect but I gotta say they look great and have a special place in my collection. I also think their looking great is partly owed to the high-domed acrylic crystal. Beautiful angular distortion and just the right clarity level and light filtering level that I don’t think you quite get with mineral and sapphire. Gives the watches some personality on what some people might think is a bit plain. Better stop there, thanks for the video!
Wow James, so much to unpack with your comment! I truly appreciate you sharing so much about these watches in your own personal experience and collection! Comments like that are what make me want to keep doing vids, even when they don’t perform as well as I hoped or for the efforts I put into them, so thank you for that. 😎🙏
Also, yeah I totally recall that burgundy dial Marlin, they look so cool! I have never seen one in the metal, definitely a lesser common piece I’d say. 👍
@@DavidSchwartzjr no don’t stop doing vids! Haha. Definitely appreciate the time and effort that goes in man. Your videos and delivery are of great quality. Wise, succinct and the right level of diplomatic. It would be a travesty to lose them. Happy to chat more over email if you’re interested but no pressure 👍🏼
Thanks James! No plans on quitting anytime soon so I’ll keep the content coming! But sure hit me up via email anytime! In fact, if you want to send me a wrist shot I’ll feature it in my upcoming vid. Been meaning to get more involved with my subs this year so that’s an idea if you’re up for it! Cheers! 😎🍻👍
That art deco is really nice. Being a Speedmaster fanatic, I like the vintage look of acrylic. Seagull is fine also. $175? Meh. A little high. Especially if I have to go another 20 bucks on a decent strap. Because that strap really is cheap and ugly looking. It would have been really cool if Timex tooled up an American factory to make cases and in-house movements. Even if they licensed the Seagull design. Do it here and establish a somewhat premium line.
Great comment Kewrock! I agree, a premium line made in America would be a huge hit among the watch enthusiasts and purists for sure! I know sometimes you can get a better deal on these marlins especially pre-owned. Strap upgrade is a must! I was really pleased with the accuracy out of this seagul but in house would be amazing! 😎🙌
Issues with the 34mm hand wound marlin? Yeah- crown has pulled out 3x so far- all the way out. I’ve had it repaired twice by a watchmaker but it keeps failing. My experience has not been good with this movement.
No worries I definitely understand! What size were you looking as far as the strap upgrade? The 34mm version (18mm lug) or the 40mm version (20mm lug)?
Late to the party but I had a BIG problem with the 34mm Marlin. After 1 month a screw came loose and it wouldn't wind. Their customer support replied only once in the 4 months of contacting them and redirected me to their local service center in which they didn't warrant the online warranty. I thanked them and went to my watchmaker who fixed it but told me this is was the last "American watch" he would touch. I am still daily wearing it as of now but for the 170€ I paid I would rather save up and by a used ETA powered Max Bill 34mm for around 300€. At least I could be confident that it could be serviced by any watchmaker anywhere in the world unlike my little white California dial Marlin.
Not much to say about the revised silver Marlin, except that it’s a imitation of the original 1965 brand with its foreign movement and off-putting thick high 5:45 crystal, saw the gaps between the watch and the case of the silver one, something that the originals never did, that fake lizard strap/band was of very bad quality stitched onto cheap leather inner, I have the 2017 reissue to compare to my 1965 model, one improvement on the 2017 was the stainless steel case, as for the yellow one… think for the money, TIMEX should have taken a better look at the 60’s model and started again, as never had the true feeling of ‘vintage’, plus replacement straps/bands on the 2017 did them no justice at all, as a low quality watch of no old fashioned/modern value. EDIT: The silver Marlin was really a recreation of a Mercury, as it should have had “Waterproof” on the dial.

The 34mm handwinding, my favorite watch of all time.
The 34mm winds well and is surprisingly incredibly accurate.
