    Great video! I'm 73 and retired, but I love learning. You should never stop learning. One of my goals after retiring was to learn a new language. It's coming along. I'm not fluent, but I'm improving every week. My dad is still alive at 102 and, though he can't do as much physically, he still stays sharp by reading and learning new things.

      The right steps for a healthy economy and a healthy business. Here (in Croatia), these "nottogetpromoted" steps are exactly the right ones for progress - the only thing missing is one more - you always have to say "yes, boss!"

      Can't agree more! I am now serving a well known global giant company, the people sitting in management fit exactly like these steps. However, people doing the opposite stay in the bottom forever (can't assume it's a practice across all countries, at least in Australia)

    A tip that was omitted (and this is VERY important) - Make certain that senior members of management see your solutions before anyone else can learn of the accomplishment and write it up in their monthly report to take credit for it. People of great ambition but who refuse to put forth the effort and who also suffer from a lack of morals are all too willing to take credit for your achievements.

    • @skypechess
      @skypechess ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree. It depends on company culture. I have never seen this kind of behavior but quite the opposite: if you have an idea/solution then it is yours to present and to get the fruit.
      Your statement is the fine combination of the _be invisible_ and _blame others_ points from the video: _I haven't got a promotion because my idea was not seen (invisible) but stolen (by others)_

    • @HedelTorres
      @HedelTorres ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you're in a job that has people like that, you'll probably want to move on to the next role or company.. My company constantly encourages everyone to recognize others, especially their own staff, and i work for a big company (in Canada).

    • @gaiustacitus4242
      @gaiustacitus4242 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@skypechess I've seen this behavior often with people of Middle Eastern backgrounds. For example, a professor from a top 25 university was brought in as a consultant. He had nothing to offer toward a solution but he was more than ready to steal my process for milling polyurethane and to file a patent on it.
      If you have great ideas, then make certain that senior members of management are made aware of who designed the solution before an unscrupulous team member of no real talent takes credit for it.
      It's nice to be a team player but it is far better for your own career to be recognized for your achievements. The alternative is to be walked on by men of lesser abilities.

    • @gaiustacitus4242
      @gaiustacitus4242 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HedelTorres I've been gone from that company for decades. However, I've seen the same type of behavior at countless companies where I've worked as a consultant. The employees who produce the value for the team are rarely the ones who get the credit.
      The good news is that consultants not only get credit for their accomplishments (even though it doesn't matter) but also get paid far more than even the highest paid employees.

    Refusing to train a backup is a suicidal strategy. I was seriously ill in the late 2000s. If I had not trained my accountant, business as usual would not have been possible. That's why I specified to the recruiters then, to hire one with the same level of skills and enough experience. The management were not fully convinced of this requirement - possibly due to budget policies? But, when that lady stood in for me, they were relieved that at least there was someone who could hold the fort for the interim. At another MNC, HQ had to draw on finance managers from other Asia-pac countries to serve as interim managers, because of staff turnover issues while permanent candidates were being interviewed. A proper succession plan has to be in place for any group of companies to function effectively.

    #1 learning - if you only learn what the company tell you to learn (or offers to pay for), ie the minimum to do your current job, then you'll be stuck in the same job forever.
    In over 20 years, I have never been offered by any employers to do courses to help me advance my career, it's always just manadatoary basic training to do the role. Many companies talk the talk about providing training, but puts every possible obstacle in the way when employees ask to go on those training, such as it's not relevant to your current role, or it's not the skill is not used by the company, or it's too expensive, or you don't qualify for that course, or over qualified for that course.
    If I didn't pay for my own training and doing them in my own time, I would not have learned anything new in 20+ years.

    The reason why I got promoted was because I didn't step back when I had to face a huge challenge. I'm open to get "bad" feedback because if there's nothing to fix how am I suppose to grow? And I never have felt like me going up requires others going down.

    “What’s up with the fruit basket everyday?!” :-)
    Great way to make your points. While most of these “recommendations” sound obviously bad once you phrase them negatively, too many people still believe making themselves “irreplaceable” is a good idea. Not only is it a career-progression killer, it’s almost never true!

    This one stung a bit. I got passed over for promotion in this cycle at my company. That's not what made this video sting. It's that people already at the level I was hoping to get to are guilty of most of those activities. They wear ignorance like it is some sort of badge of honor.
    One has been saying to me, for over a year, "I don't know Excel" (a foundational tool at my company).
    Another interrupted me while on a call one day to ask "How do I resize a column in Excel?"
    This is while working for a company that provides access to Degreed, LinkedIn Learning, O'Reilly Learning and Cornerstone on Demand. There is an abundance of opportunity to learn.
    Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably lay down. I think I facepalmed myself so much that I have caused a concussion. 🤣🤣

    Hey, what a great video. Not at all your usual content but very important information presented in a thoroughly entertaining way. Mostly I'm the opposite of what you presented but I did realise one important thing that I'm not doing. Actively seeking feedback. I'll start that next week.

    Step 5 : blame others - this is really what lets me know what type of person im dealing with.
    When a coworker refuses to own up to their mistakes - i just make a mental note that im dealing with a child.
    Im genuinely shocked at the number of ppl who get to high level positions that suffer from this flaw.

      How cool is that I took part of the blame for something going wrong and two other coworkers did it as well?

    I feel like what most companies do is hire people they think are ideal but don’t have the standard skills… then it becomes a you problem to train that person and if they do something wrong then it becomes like a major huge drama if you correct it. I told a new technician to go ahead and report me to a PM, after asking slowly if I should check for a type of ticket for a different computer the customer needed. Huge blow up after the customer left the office. I just listened to the angry venting and said. Ok. If that’s what your going to do. And carried on.. no shit given.

    "Be sure to find the cloud in any silver lining ', brilliant! But we're not talking about that sort of cloud.

    This may be true for us little people. But at the the managerial or executive level all those traits will absolutely guarantee you a promotion/fat bonus package.
