Some people never forget where they came from, and how they started. Thanks for the video and the great idea. Videos like this one is what made you a success.
PVC...the Big Kid's tinker toys!!! I make a firearms target stand out of PVC. Work well. Just make sure to fill the bottom with sand. I did the same thing to my kayak. I put a relief cut in the PVC prior to heating it. I also built a set of outriggers for fly fishing. I used the jumbo sized floaties for increased buoyancy. I also made a PVC frame for a mosquito net to go over my Army cot for when I am camping. Your beer bottle used to flare the rod holder? Genius!! Love your creative ways and thought process. Now go fishing and have some fun.
Nice job. I'm new to kayak fishing. At 64 it's never too late to get out with the boat or the new-to-me kayak. I'll be adding rod holders soon. Thanks for the creative ideas.
I don't know if your a genius or just cheap. Maybe a little of both I never knew you could manipulate PVC with heat that much. Using the beer bottle to flare the end was great. Love the giant tikis in the background. Thanks for sharing.
Hey this is a great video DIY, and like you, I use a lot of pvc pipe for everything and what i learned is if you heat the pipe up to much it becomes very flimsy witch makes it flex to much with force. so as a tip heat it up a little less and it will be more pliable. Also i use a heat gun and it doest leave those bad burn marks. Hope this will help.
Really nice but simple. I'm going to make a couple for my Wilderness System Kayak. You are a true inspiration. Thanks for sharing your creative ideas in such a unique way ad usual.
awesome. Thanks for making this video. I just got my first yak, and I need to extend the rod holder as well. I already planned on using pvc. I wouldn't have thought to heat it up and shape it. cool man
U DA MAN. Super vid Marty. F.Y.I. There is a tip for propane torches that spread the flame thereby making burning of the pvc less likely. Try it to avoid those burn spots. Keep them coming Marty.
Fantastic sir! i originally went with the 1 1/4" wrapped with duct tape but this is much better! I just made mine and they are drying now. Thanks again for the great idea!
This gives me a great idea! I always have a hard time reaching behind me for the rods, im going to try this but with a deeper angle towards the front to get them withing a comfortable reach :) "DIY and Beer are great" couldn't agree more! Good job on the vid, keep'm coming!
Love these vids. You should have your own show on the Outdoor Channel. If nothing else, you should be a designer or consultant into development of angling kayaks.
Great vid, and good ideas. I just purchased my first fishing yak and since I spent all my money on it, the paddle and a PFD...I need some cheap ideas to rig it better. This is definitely going to help. Thanks.
you could attach the 1 1/2 PVC to a hand drill (make some kind of hub with a plumbers pressure test plug or something), get it spinning and apply the area needing to be reduced to a running belt sander......works pretty good at reducing diameters evenly.
Necessity is the mother of invention and the same applies to fishing. I like how the rod holders spread the rod tips. That can come in hand if you're doing some slow trolling.
Be careful using a open flame with PVC! I worked at a plastic fab shop for a couple years and I was told it gives off a toxic fumes! Plus your inside(no ventilation)! Just a friendly heads up! Love your videos! Keep doing your thing
That's why it is very important to drink beer while doing this. Beer washes down the toxins and then you peee the toxins out destroying the eco system.
Marty, check out 4:35, where you put the gas burner down... You came sooooo close to cooking your rod tip there buddy. Although I did notice after a little twisting and turning of your piece of pvc that the flame was out. Great video thanks mate. I shall be using the very same idea (courtesy of your good self) when I get my Hobie next spring. All the best and thanks again :)
You are going to love the PA it is a great Yak. I did cringe when you started to drill holes in it for the dolly bracket. lol Just found you site and subscribed. thanks
Haha, awesome just the DIY project I was looking for Marty. I was about to go buy some rod holders for my new outback, not now this will do just fine and save me some Cha-Ching $$$!! Thanks great video!!
Marty you are freaking awesome we absolutely love your videos always relaxing always have something good to say even on the videos that you feel are not good dude they're great me my wife my two boys we love watching them keep it up please don't ever stop I'm not a fisherman I've never really enjoyed it however my boy loves it and so does my wife LOL looks like I might need to get into it watching your videos has inspired me to try from Mississippi we love you
Great programs here.I am a handicapped padler and use personal pontoon boat due to leg problems. Have you ever used one of these? If so Would greatly enjoy some modification tips..
Hi Marty, Really enjoy your videos. One thing to be careful of when applying flames to the PVC pipe. I know from personal experience that it can put off some really toxic fumes during the heating and especially if it starts to turn black or burn. Just don't want to lose one of my favorite You Tube movie makers. You are the Man! Thanks for all you nice videos. John
+helicopterjohns whenPVC = PolyVinyl Chloride is heated/burned it releases toxic hydrogen chloride gas, forming deadly hydrochloric acid. Dangerous especially in house/building fires. I agree: we don't want to lose you or anyone else!
I don't know if Hobie's molded rod holders are different diameter, but a much easier way to fit in most rod holders is to cut a slit only on one side. The cut allows the the PVC to contract just enough... even the width of a hack saw blade is enough (the first saw you used to cut-off to install angle would be enough). It is just as tight as using heat to melt the PVC. You can use a jig saw, hack saw, dremel, etc. Here is a photo of example: img822.imageshack.us/img822/3446/1000177n.jpg EDIT: 1 1/2" PVC
CPVC has a smaller outside diameter than PVC 1-1/2" CPVC will fit in the rod holders perfectly, without heating. A word of caution. If you are going to heat either CPVC or PVC, do it in a well ventilated area. They both give off carcinogens and can cause serious lung damage.
I'd like to commend you on your innovation and beer. Why don't you auction your old Kayak off, and see what you can get. It might buy you a couple new reels or some more pvc.
Question Marty, Instead of using the angled coupling, couldn’t you heat up the pipe and put a little bend in it. I’ve seen people fill the pvc with sand before heating to prevent it from kinking. Just sayin’
When you said you were inspired by your beer I thought for sure we were going to see some foam beer bottle or tiki covers that surrounded your new rod holders.
Like ur videos, got a question for you, what fishing kayak would be best for me? My budget is under $500 and I need some weight capacity because I plan on installing my 46#thrust trolling motor w/battery and all my gear.
I don't think Marty is going to reply to you Sean but your best bet is to shop around on Facecrack Market-place or Craig's thingamajig. $500 is right at the bottom limit of what you will find with a used kayak. Kayaking has become very popular so that drives up the prices too on both used and new yaks. Hope you find what you are after! If you are on Facecrack Marty has a channel there too called "Love Kayak Fishing".
I had a similar issue with my Future Beach 160 Angler. I refuse to pay big kayak manufacturing Czars mega bucks for something I can country gal rig something. I took sand put it in the pvc pipe duct taped end keep it from spilling out the took a heat gun to in to quickly but gently bend it ...the sand helps distribute the heat even .and keeps it from kinking into a fine mess..After your done empty out sand . ; )
Love your videos just found you a few days ago and i keep returning to watch more of your content I recently got a pelican rebel 100xr premium and was woundering if you could do some reviews and mods on this soon so i can try them on my kayak i am new to kayaking and for this kayak the seat need to be secured to the kayak and that the stability of this particular kayak is not that good so looking to put stabilizers on it if you were to make a video on this maybe add more mods I would really appreciate it if not maybe point out some mods that I could do in one of your videos to help make this kayak fish Worthy thank you
Some people never forget where they came from, and how they started. Thanks for the video and the great idea. Videos like this one is what made you a success.
This is why I love TH-cam, because of guys like you, brilliant thinking my friend,
I love this guy. Doesn't settle to buy anything when you can DIY! Love all the ideas! DIY will always be in my mind for life! Good video marty!
Wow!!! 7 years!! I've been watching your videos for 6 years!!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that brings his kayak in the dining room
Nice job. I'm new to kayak fishing. At 64 it's never too late to get out with the boat or the new-to-me kayak. I'll be adding rod holders soon. Thanks for the creative ideas.
Great idea, like the beer bottle trick. The best part about that trick is you get to empty the beer bottle first ! Keep-um coming, tight lines !
Another great video Marty! The poor mans' ingenuity lives on!
Cheers Marty. Great creativity. Beer power=DIY projects.
I don't know if your a genius or just cheap. Maybe a little of both I never knew you could manipulate PVC with heat that much. Using the beer bottle to flare the end was great. Love the giant tikis in the background. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent. Love to see people use creativity to improve things.
awesome. Thanks for making this video. I just got my first yak, and I need to extend the rod holder as well. I already planned on using pvc. I wouldn't have thought to heat it up and shape it. cool man
I subscribed once he said kids and drunk people. This guy is a mad scientist.
U DA MAN. Super vid Marty. F.Y.I. There is a tip for propane torches that spread the flame thereby making burning of the pvc less likely. Try it to avoid those burn spots. Keep them coming Marty.
Looks easy enough so I will certainly try this. Thanks for the great ideas.
Wow, that's excellent. I cut groves in mine to make it fit, but this seems like a better way. Never thought to melt the pipe. Now paint them pink
Fantastic sir! i originally went with the 1 1/4" wrapped with duct tape but this is much better! I just made mine and they are drying now. Thanks again for the great idea!
Zoffinger...this is exactly the vid I needed today.
This gives me a great idea! I always have a hard time reaching behind me for the rods, im going to try this but with a deeper angle towards the front to get them withing a comfortable reach :) "DIY and Beer are great" couldn't agree more! Good job on the vid, keep'm coming!
A couple of 3 inch sections of bicycle inner tube work great to make for a good fit.
Wow! You are so right. Beer and DIY are good!
Love these vids. You should have your own show on the Outdoor Channel. If nothing else, you should be a designer or consultant into development of angling kayaks.
BOAB Sailing sent me! Glad we found you cause we need help when it comes to fishing. 😁👍
Nothing like DIY and making my own gear. Always great tips my friend! Keep it up!
Great vid, and good ideas. I just purchased my first fishing yak and since I spent all my money on it, the paddle and a PFD...I need some cheap ideas to rig it better. This is definitely going to help. Thanks.
Cool bud, thanks for the ideas. I'm totally making those, and paintingbthem to match the boat
Fully agree...DIY and BEER is GREAT!!!
you could attach the 1 1/2 PVC to a hand drill (make some kind of hub with a plumbers pressure test plug or something), get it spinning and apply the area needing to be reduced to a running belt sander......works pretty good at reducing diameters evenly.
Give Marty a beer and stand back and watch him go . Love it . Great job 👏 👍 bro .
I'm going to the liquor store right now!
Ha! Enjoy the incorporation of the beer bottle on this mod. Nicely done, Marty. :)
Perfect! I was just looking for videos that would show how to curve the top.
Necessity is the mother of invention and the same applies to fishing. I like how the rod holders spread the rod tips. That can come in hand if you're doing some slow trolling.

Dude I love your videos! Always look foward to them specially since you live in the bay right down the road from the race track I go to
I really thought you were going to make them look like beer bottles, or put a bottle opener on one. Nice job thank you for sharing.
DIY and beer is a good combo !
Nice DIY! Keep the vids coming!!!
Marty, check out 4:35, where you put the gas burner down...

On my Ascend FS12T I sanded the PVC pipe and it removes very easily But I do appreciate all your videos
AWESOME WORK BRO, VERY CREATIVE!!!
Good job Marty. Make sure to do a good stress test on the elbow joints. Love the video's.
Love the videos all ways a good way to end the day
Marty,
Excellent. Great ideas!! Nothing like beer inspiration. :)
You are going to love the PA it is a great Yak. I did cringe when you started to drill holes in it for the dolly bracket. lol Just found you site and subscribed. thanks
lol. I made mine with the notch tight at the top so the stem of the reel has to snap in. It holds very well. No need for leashes
Haha, awesome just the DIY project I was looking for Marty. I was about to go buy some rod holders for my new outback, not now this will do just fine and save me some Cha-Ching $$$!! Thanks great video!!
Love it -- have made these mods myself and more with your inspiration -- TY -- Keith
You gave me great ideas!! Thank you!!
Marty you are freaking awesome we absolutely love your videos always relaxing always have something good to say even on the videos that you feel are not good dude they're great me my wife my two boys we love watching them keep it up please don't ever stop I'm not a fisherman I've never really enjoyed it however my boy loves it and so does my wife LOL looks like I might need to get into it watching your videos has inspired me to try from Mississippi we love you
hey Marty, very good solution, simple is best.
Love your vids I live in Tampa and it looks like you go where I go sometimes
Nice job ,I will be making some out of one inch for my smaller rods a kind of Taylor fit instead of one size fits all lol.
1 1\4 slip should work also know as a coupling. You can grind the inside out with a dremel so u can use multiple.
I wanna be like you...!!! dude you got it down..if I was in the Kayak business you got a job brother..
Okay, you are my new idol. So cool, thanks for sharing!
Great programs here.I am a handicapped padler and use personal pontoon boat due to leg problems. Have you ever used one of these? If so Would greatly enjoy some modification tips..
A heat gun works much better than a torch. More control and less discoloration.
Hi Marty,
Really enjoy your videos. One thing to be careful of when applying flames to the PVC pipe. thank you. I used this trick on my 2015 PA 14
nicely done. the black paint makes them look stock

EDIT: 1 1/2" PVC
Thanks for you many instructive videos!
4:37 to 5:27 gave me a flashback to a weekend in high school with my first girlfriend.
HAHA! Now that is funny!
as I start to mumble "this guy is a genius", camera pans to Albert Einstein. Great video!
Well done Marty!
Wy did u use the burner inside your house? Great video man huge fan
Another great idea... thanx for sharin
Dude... there you are in your mancave.... doing what you want !
How could anyone be any richer ?
You have a matzuo rod! I love matzuo but is u put pressure on the side they snap pretty quick. But for 30$ a combo it's fine
Nice mod! Though my poor right ear got lonely listening to this :D
1 1/4 “ pvc plus 2 O-rings works well also. John P

Hobie should make a Pro Angler Marty Edition with all of your modifications stock ;) XD you and Hobie would make millions! Hahaha
I'd like to commend you on your innovation and beer. Why don't you auction your old Kayak off, and see what you can get. It might buy you a couple new reels or some more pvc.
Thanks again for sharing, Awesome.
Marty I miss you please come back from Florida
congratulations, officially beat the evil hobie corporation. nice vid I will put a pair on my hobie
I come up with my best ideas drinking beer
This will make the hole of the kayak expand too.
Looked great.
Question Marty,
Instead of using the angled coupling, couldn’t you heat up the pipe and put a little bend in it. I’ve seen people fill the pvc with sand before heating to prevent it from kinking.
Just sayin’
Súper!!! thanks for thank idea's !!!
When you said you were inspired by your beer I thought for sure we were going to see some foam beer bottle or tiki covers that surrounded your new rod holders.
Hey Marty I would like to know if the Matzuo rod is good I am looking into getting one and would like to know thanks.
I have a heat gun i'm going to use on mine. I will angle the holders out more for trolling two rods at once.
that was awosome! you r the Man!
Hair dryer also, but neat DYI.
Does a hair dryer get hot enough???
Like ur videos, got a question for you, what fishing kayak would be best for me? My budget is under $500 and I need some weight capacity because I plan on installing my 46#thrust trolling motor w/battery and all my gear.

I recently got a pelican rebel 100xr premium and was woundering if you could do some reviews and mods on this soon so i can try them on my kayak i am new to kayaking and for this kayak the seat need to be secured to the kayak and that the stability of this particular kayak is not that good so looking to put stabilizers on it if you were to make a video on this maybe add more mods I would really appreciate it if not maybe point out some mods that I could do in one of your videos to help make this kayak fish Worthy thank you
