    I loved the comparison of running away from a lion to playing the flute, and how the amount of lung capacity we're using should be the same! You're totally right--our bodies are built to breathe, and if we can make "deep breathing mode" habitual, it will make playing the flute sound so much more effortless.

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha, yes, running away from a lion is EXACTLY like playing the flute.... ? 😂 Anyway, we're lucky to get to use all that extra lung capacity we have built in on a regular basis!

    A reminder to take DEEP BREATHS is always important, but YES! especially now!

      It does seem like it! We're all shy about breathing right now.... 🤔

    Using T&G five as a breathing exercise has taught me a lot about support, especially in the low register. Trying to use up all of my air has helped me feel my core actively working.

    Very cool video on breathing! I'm a self taught singer (yeah it's kind of obvious. Lol) once I found my diaphragm I use it all the time to breath. And being soft spoken, I realized by using it when I speak people can actually hear me. I also meditate daily, I breathe in for 6 counts and exhale for 9 to 11, depending on the intentions I'm setting.

    Such a great video, and very timely! Deep breathing is undervalued by non-wind players but it's so important for the mind and body!

    This is definitely really helpful because it takes a simple exercise and uses it to get more breath. I'm definitely going to start doing this before every practice session now.

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true, it's simple, but trains your body to FILL UP YOUR LUNGS! 😊 It's a great feeling to get used to as you warm up!

    You are so excellent in explaining these principles of "good flute playing"! Thanks for the review! I've been so frustrated when trying to play with a mask on in my orchestras that require the wearing of masks! Also, the current research shows that flutes are NOT big offenders of aerosols! We probably don't even need to wear masks, but the venue and orchestra protocols require it. Thank you so much for making these excellent and worthwhile videos...saving my flute life!!!

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, I was quite surprised by some COVID research that shows other wind instruments are worse offenders for COVID than flutes - but then again, we blow pretty "cleanly"! Not buzzing into a mouthpiece or wetting a reed.

    This was a great video that I definitely needed to watch. I feel like it is too easy for me to forgot to use deep breathing before and while playing flute but that means I don’t get the sound I want and I have to breathe more often than I would like. I am excited at the idea of using deep breathing all the time to help my playing, and apparently my health, how cool!

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perfect! That's the effect I was hoping for. It should really feel completely different from non-flute-playing breathing 😊

    I definitely needed this video! I constantly have to remind myself to relax as I breathe, but it is so much easier when my body is used to breathing deeply. I’m excited to work on these T&G exercises and to deepen my breathing and improve my projection and tone.
