I also ran into problems because of his tendency to respond with an uppercut after you get up during Phase 3, so that would have required either a perfectly timed punch to cancel the uppercut or wearing headgear to tank it--and that was just what it took to get started on Phase 3! Needless to say, I never was able to pull it off.
I like how in punch out you’re frail and small. You have to play super defensively, baiting and punishing everything you can to carefully get jabs in to build up damage before landing some star attacks. And then in smash bros you just throw out your smash attacks a billion times and super armor through everything.
I would say Mac is still very bait and punish-oriented in Smash Bros. as his smash attacks can be punished easier than most people think, but that's what is cool about Smash Bros.- characters can be played however the player wants to play them, giving the possibility of a more aggressive approach to Mac's neutral game (which requires practically all reads to be perfect and is thus not as simple as armoring through every single attack).

Doesn't Super Macho Man have a trick where you can keep hitting him when he is in his getting hit animation? You can star him and then keep hitting him just before he comes back from getting hit and you can keep going until he dies. I think you have to alternate punches like left right left right. I thought about that, but I was under the impression that the Star Punch animation cooldown would remove that opportunity - but that might be research bias on my part. I’ll give it a shot - thanks for the recommendation, Gilberto!
You know, I think it's possible (albeit extremely difficult) to beat Sandman with out dodging AND without taking damage. Every move he throws at you can be countered, which is insane! And his Dreamland Express can be countered for an instant knockdown with a star punch. Another tactic you might not know is that when he starts his Dreamland Express (meaning dropping his fists), if you want a better chance at landing the star punch, throw a regular jab immediately when he starts it, then immediately go for the star punch. He will dodge the jab and immediately go into the uppercuts, but your star punch will hit him first! If you have 3 stars when you land it, it's an instant knockout!

@@Jbg802 You can still beat TD Bald Bull by decision, even if you never actually knock him down. The one who would actually be a roadblock would be TD Glass Joe, since he wears headgear that makes him immune to jabs unless you nail him with a star punch first. Of course, you'd never get any stars in the first place, since all your jabs would bounce off his headgear, and even if you could get stars, you wouldn't be allowed to use them, since star punches aren't jabs.
nice vid, I love punch out and this was quite interesting I knew that most of em were gonna be possible to beat, but I seriously doubted soda popinski and macho man good stuff dude
My initial guess is no, he has so many moves that cover ranges that need to be dodged. Plus, he hits like crazy - so there’s not much of a chance for a decision, I don’t think. I’d love to research that, as well as just the Title Defense fights. Thanks, TGS!

(Not scanning enemies as robobot is a bonus, but I think there's some parts that require you to transform. Not sure, though)

I’ve been thinking about that same thing. Naturally, I’m a real fast and energetic talker - but people have been digging the slower cadence lately. That’s completely fine, I think it works better to listen to, especially for the analysis content, but for these challenges and OP-EDs, I would like to work more on talking more emotively. It’s on the top of my 2019 things to work on! Thanks for bringing this up, Nicktendo!
the title is a bit confusing but he explains at the beginning that no defensive maneuvers period were allowed, except for the occasional star punch dodge which only happens with specific attacks anyways, none of which would be on Super Macho Man
The run historically has been called “no dodge” in other attempts, but I didn’t see the point of blocking or ducking since dodging is really the main required defense, so might as well cut out all forms. Thanks for checking this one out!
Wow, I’m pleasantly surprised I guessed the main roadblock. I read the title and thought “no way, macho man’s clotheslines will just melt you” Didn’t know anything about the no counter opportunities thing, but it feels nice to know enough about the game to anticipate the issue

Matt from wii boxing is harder than everyone in punch out
Commander Derpling yea. True...
I was actually going to comment if you asked zallard for help lol
Oh now this is a nice spin on the cliche
Glad you think so, Masahiro! Thanks for checking this one out so early - good to hear from you
This is if Mac watched Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida and decided to model his whole game plan after it.
Great! Now try Title Defence!
Read the title and said "Oh hey I tried to do this once a long time ago". Imagine my surprise when I see my video briefly referenced lol. Thanks for the shoutout!
btw zallard1 is one of the top punch out(all 3) speedrunner
It really felt like watching a movie thanks to your top notch commentaries
Is it possible to beat punch out for the wii by only using jabs?
I’m sure that’s worth investigating! I’ll look into it.
Thanks, THI!
I'm sure it is, it's probably really time consuming though, Like trying to fight Jason with rocks in Froday the 13th for the NES
No because bald bull td needs to be took down by a star punch
@@Jbg802 You can still beat TD Bald Bull by decision, even if you never actually knock him down.
The one who would actually be a roadblock would be TD Glass Joe, since he wears headgear that makes him immune to jabs unless you nail him with a star punch first. Of course, you'd never get any stars in the first place, since all your jabs would bounce off his headgear, and even if you could get stars, you wouldn't be allowed to use them, since star punches aren't jabs.
@@MrL1193 can't you punch him in the stomach
nice vid, I love punch out and this was quite interesting
I knew that most of em were gonna be possible to beat, but I seriously doubted soda popinski and macho man
good stuff dude
What are your thoughts on the DK dodgeless fight? Is that possible?
My initial guess is no, he has so many moves that cover ranges that need to be dodged. Plus, he hits like crazy - so there’s not much of a chance for a decision, I don’t think. I’d love to research that, as well as just the Title Defense fights.
Thanks, TGS!
So sandman is the most difficult fight... wait a second
( bogus is heard from a distance)
Oooh I love Punch-Out. Would it be possible to try this out for the NES/SNES versions or are they too different for this to work?
I would love to try that! I'm more familiar with the tricks of the trade in this one, but I'll add it to the challenge list.
Thanks for checking this one out, TFB98!
Soda Popinski having an extremely specific route that makes the fight just barely beatable makes me wonder if it was intentionally designed like that
You thought this was hard? Get ready for No Dodge Doc Louis.
"It feels like you're just mamaging some perfectly coreographed dance routine to the second"
Ah yes, welcome to how speedrunning games feels like
Now do it without punching
CloudySkies17695 how?
Thot Slayer ah. Okay....
Like that disco kid...
With those notes...
Music puns, gotta love em
Mr.sandman has a challenge to not dodge
I was hoping someone would try this without uppercuts/stars instead, but this is a pretty crazy sounding challenge too. Good work!
Can you beat punch out without punching?
Can you imagine how hyped up Mac would be in universe?
I'm sure you'll get it next time, champ. Do you have any ideas of what you may try next?
Hey Matt! I’ve got a list building up with more and more challenges, so I’m looking forward to diving into those in the future.
For one, if there’s interest for it, I’d love to do Title Defense with these same rules.
Thanks for checking this one out!
I wish skip the tutorial still made cool and unique videos like this
So at first I was gonna mention that you skipped title defense and just did the contender circuit, but macho man shut me up real quick
I’d love to do TD if there’s any interest - maybe there’s more luck over there? Haha
Thanks for checking this one out Mc Nintentwins!
@@skipthetutorial I'd certainly be interested! Especially curious about Von Kaiser, as his TD battle has an instakill move in it
@@skipthetutorial and in TD they mostly dodge your star punches unless timed crazy well (or if ya dodged, which ya can't) so the hard factor is like +10
Surprising that this is almost a year old now, I swear I've watched this at least 100 times now!
Can you beat Punch Out!! Wii-thout dodging....
r/missedopportunity

This is one of your classics, I love coming back to this video every once in a while
I wanna know if you can beat Kirby Planet Robobot without eating anything (no food or enemies or anything like that) and still get enough code cubes to reach the bosses and final boss. (Not scanning enemies as robobot is a bonus, but I think there's some parts that require you to transform. Not sure, though)
I'll add that to the challenge research list - thanks for the suggestion, Fedora!
Good to hear from you here
I think there is parts you're force to scan with robobot sections.
Mainly the Jet sections
Though it is a good idea.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. Anyway, bonus gone, or don't count those parts, cuz werd level is weird.
I’m extremely glad to see Punch Out Wii content, one of my favorite games. The only solution I could see is to use the headgear or somehow exploit super macho man’s special move.
Legend has it, that by commenting something random, skip will heart this and I’ll get a lot of likes,
Here I go
Something Random
I did it
my ffet
This game makes me so nostalgic bc I got it when I was like 7 and I was so pissed when I’d loose. Love the vid keep up the good work!
next video: can you beat punch out wii without punching?
you did your best Lanipator would be proud
Can you beat Crash Bandicoot Nsane Trilogy without spinning?
there are platforms that are only usable once you spin at them, so unfortunately it is not possible.
Nope.
Nightfox WOAH
It was a suggestion. Geez.

Port Punch Out Wii to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo.
Nintendonian777 Punch out 2020?
No surprise zallard1 figured it out, he is the “World Champion” of all punch out games
Punch Out for Nintendo Switch
Señor Fluffy make it happen
still a missed opportunity that they never put the best video game boxer in arms. i mean come on, glass joe deserves it. little mac on the other hand is a cripple suddenly, wazzap with that?
i love punch out, this video was super enjoyable
I kinda think it might help if you had a more...casual sounding tone for these more casual videos (anything that isn’t an analysis in some way)? Maybe I’m just too used to hearing your voice in more informative videos lol.
Skip the Tutorial No problem!
Mr. Sandman gon' bring you a nightmare this time.
You ain't no dodging fighter Mac
... the saddest part about that is i tried to imitate doc while saying that
Getting so much nostalgia for punch out now! Great vid too
Why didn't he block?
the title is a bit confusing but he explains at the beginning that no defensive maneuvers period were allowed, except for the occasional star punch dodge which only happens with specific attacks anyways, none of which would be on Super Macho Man
The run historically has been called “no dodge” in other attempts, but I didn’t see the point of blocking or ducking since dodging is really the main required defense, so might as well cut out all forms.
Thanks for checking this one out!
I see, his traumatizing background has been forgotten and been put into Smash. Happy days for him i guess
Imagine Soda Popinski fighting Bald Bull, also I absolutely love your voice and how you never do face reveals.
Wow, I’m pleasantly surprised I guessed the main roadblock. I read the title and thought “no way, macho man’s clotheslines will just melt you”
Didn’t know anything about the no counter opportunities thing, but it feels nice to know enough about the game to anticipate the issue
You’re that much of a pro! His clothesline’s worried me, but I thought a decision victory might work if he had any counters. Ah well
Thanks for checking this one out, Yoshifan!
