Layne was born August 22, 1967. Layne stacked his own vocals. Would was written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell for Mother Love Bone's late singer Andy Wood who died of an overdose in 1990 just as Mother Love Bone was about to hit it big. Two members (Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) dissolved Mother Love Bone and re-emerged later as Pearl Jam. The title "Would?" is a play on Andy Wood's name.
I'm 57 years old now. back when they were on tour with Metallica in 1991 i guess that would put me at 28, i was up very close to the stage maybe 4 feet from Layne. these guys totally knocked my doors off their hinges. i will never forget that show was so lucky to be there. they absolutely kicked ass. i actually liked their show more than Metallica which was their and justice for all tour. i used to go to hundreds of shows back when all the heavy rockers were in their prime. haha money well spent \m/
Me too..Kansas City was a rock n roll mecca..Went to hundreds of show..Everyone from ZZ Top to Dwight Youkum to Collective Soul to Primus to Nitty Gritty dirt band..
AIC is my favorite band by far and this is probably my favorite song of theirs. Jerry Cantrell's masterful guitar riffs Layne's voice and Jerry and Layne's harmonies are pure magic. No other band has the smooth effortless harmonies like AIC.
One of a ton of songs by Seattle grunge bands about Andrew Wood including Candlebox's "Far Behind." Andrew Wood was the singer of Mother Love Bone. He was a Heroin addict but got clean for awhile while recording their debut album Apple. He got into it and ODed shortly before the album was released. I remember reading the Grave review in Rolling Stone magazine at the time. Andrew used to be roommates with Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell who wrote a couple of songs about his death, notably "Say Hello to Heaven." Chris decided to record a tribute album to Andrew and brought in his drummer Matt Cameron and asked Andrew's former bandmates Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament to join and named it Temple of the Dog. While writing and recording, Stone and Jeff were putting together a new band called (then) Mookie Blaylock. They sent out demo tapes of music to several singers for them to add lyrics and vocals. They gave one of them to Chris which became Times of Trouble. The exact same track (with different drums) became the original version of Pearl Jam's Footsteps. Stone and Jeff brought in guitarist Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder came up from San Diego to audition. Eventually they would get a drummer and become Pearl Jam. While in the studio getting to know Stone and Jeff, Eddie helped Chris Cornell figure out the vocal melody fit a song called Hunger Strike, which became Temple of the Dog's hit. And it is why both Eddie and Chris sing the same verse. Years later after Soundgarden's first break up, Matt Cameron became the 4th orc5th drummer for Pearl Jam making the song Hunger Strike the entire current lineup of Pearl Jam, plus the late Chris Cornell who unfortunately killed himself a few years ago while on tour with a reformed Soundgarden.
Jay, you did as well as anybody with the lyrics. Most songs that withstand time have lyrics that are somewhat vague. That way the song can have both a personal meaning to the listener, as well as it's actual meaning. These types of songs don't get old as quick, since one can ponder the actual meaning while enjoying the tune. Glad your exploring this music that's new to you, and including us to listen with you.
Layne's voice was an instrument itself. Jerry and him harmonize . Check out Rain when I die, bleed the freak, love hate love, them bones, just start at the beginning with man in the box and you'll will love every album.
Bleed the Freak, Junkhead, Love Hate Love, Angry Chair, Dirt...song and the entire album! Would is in my top 3 but man is it hard to choose when they're sooo many!!
That side to side headbang ur doing is very Layne , lol. When i first stumbled upon aic One of the first things visually i noticed when they performed. As most ppl go and headbang up and down lol Rip Layne
Subscribed, showing support for the Alice In Chains love. Jerry uses Friedman amps, so does William Duvall, the current AIC guitar and singing duet. Their new music is awesome too, but showing love to the late Mike Starr and Layne Staley is enough for me. Also, do you play guitar? You talking about flanger on the last AIC video and asking about amps has me thinking you play. Respect from Canada. Also, react to Bleed The Freak!
Man in The Box next ! Dude i promise u will be a fan of them ,, such an amazing band but unfortunately we lost Layne Staley and Bass player Mike Starr both died due to a heroin Overdose RIP Legends hope they find peace now Anyway bro u gotta get more into grunge may i recommand : Pearl Jam - Jeremy (MTV Unplugged) Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days Mad Season - Wake Up (its a super group which got Layne Stamey as Lead singer / Mike McCready from Pearl Jam on The Guitar / Martin Barret on the Drums from Screaming Trees ) Anyway , again great reaction dude keep it up!
Thanks for remembering Layne's birthday. Would be perfect if you remembered Scott Weiland on 10/27. I know there are other guys that have passed, these are just my 2 faves
This song is from the movie Singles and gave Alice in chains enough time and money to record this album and started the grunge era. This entire album is pure 90s awesomness. Jerry and Layne were such a great duo.
Great reaction one of my favorite AIC songs and love when you said that Layne's voice is smooth and has grit, 100% my friend, 100%! "Would" love it if you "would" react to their song, Again 😁
I love your art work in the background! 💕 Love your reactions also! It’s funny how everyone says “that was too short” when it comes to AIC…it was over 4 mins long tho!! lol Alice In Chains are true legends.
Know I’m late on this one, but this is still my #1 song ever. The music video changed my life. Seeing the guys, especially Layne with his style, that was it. It was on. Time to rock and never look back.
Awe man, I saw them LIVE in Milwaukee at the Eagle's Ballroom in the Rave. The curtain dropped and Layne was in the middle of a giant rope ladder net thing SCREAMING "Couldn't Dam That River".... Chills thinking about it.
Actually, Layne's first line is heard in harmony with Jerry in "broken, by my master". Then Jerry sings "Teach thee on child" then harmony with Layne "of love hereafter". Obviously you are right, Layne is the only one singing the amazing, gut punch of a chorus. I remember hearing Jerry say in an interview, I think it was his recent Gibson Icons video, that he loved harmonizing with Layne because it was hard to discern who was singing which part when they harmonized. Layne was the one that made Jerry sing Rooster, he told him it was his song, he wrote it and he should sing on it. It was part of the beauty of the band, one of many. Also, I have to mention that Mike Starr is being really overlooked, his bass tone was awesome and huge! RIP to both of those legends.
@@andrewkelley3434 You're right I just didn't want to get so specific cause I didn't think anyone would read it. Their harmonies were so unique, that's why their music endures... and always harmonizing in perfect fourths.

They didn’t write many “fillers” that’s for sure! Cantrell’s guitar work is just incredible. I don’t mean necessarily fast but tasty, nasty...The bass run in this song is legendary. 🎵
This is one of my favorite all time AIC songs, I like when you try to breakdown lyrics at the end, have you reacted to any Pearl Jam? Even Flow? Etc... that would rock...
Good job on the reactions, brotha.. I like your selection of music and honest respect for the great rockers before us! P.S. (Jerry Cantrell/lead guitarist wrote the majority of their songs, many of which the lyrics as well.). One of the reasons they continue to make similar sounding music now with different singers. Nobody can be Layne, but DuVall still does great singing the new stuff. Anyway, subscribed and looking to hear more good reactions.
It's about Andrew Wood's heroin addiction. I "believe" they are referring to the plunge of heroin syringe with "into the flood again", and "same old trip it was back then" refers to how awesome the rush is every time...."so I made a big mistake"....

Mike Starr and Sean Kinney were so damn good together. Don't misunderstand, I think Mike Inez is killer in his own right too.
