May you rest in peace Matt. You have left us with some wonderful memories and no doubt have inspired many to take to the skies, where you are flying now wtih no more earthly concerns. Thank you for your spirit and beautiful contributions. With love and sadness - Dave
Same here, it must be something spiritual. Some pilots should put together a TV documentary about his flying. Such genorousity of spirit creating this epic golden globe award winning gliding sport videology best I have seen ever
As someone who (recently) started gliding, I find this video exceptionally compelling in every way… I keep finding myself watching it. Huge respect toward the late Matt.
This remains me on the rich gliding in Örlinghausen/Teutoburger Wald but no water side - what a wonderful scenary - the best film I have ever seen. Thanks
Years ago, at Sutton Bank, Yorkshire, it was possible to ridge soar for miles along the Hambleton hills. And in the T21, with the open cockpit and high wing just a few feet from the clifftop path, it was delightful with the scent of wildflowers and eavesdropping on the chatter of the walkers who seemed to enjoy a cheery wave. It was the only way to fly very low legally. I hope it still is and the powers that be never change it.
Stunning - mesmerising and simply beautiful. I don't think I've every been so captivated. Thank you very much for this wonderful footage. My few experiences in gliders have all been thermal but now I will dream of ridges and coastlines - we are well served in that regard here in Australia too! Perhaps instead of renewing my powered licence, I may have to consider soaring on what I've just experienced thanks to you! Many regards from Australia - David
I wish to be on one of the cliffs, enjoying the scenery, and suddenly see you flying low. How beautiful! Thanks for all your videos, they make me dream. I have to settle for practicing FPV. Pablo.
Fantastic! I'm green with envy as I have only been on foot along this stretch of coast. What a buzz! I love seeing those wings flex and the feeling with a bit of g!
Every time I watch this the 'buzz' doesn't diminish, what it must be like to actually fly must be so exhilarating! My gliding experience has been just a couple of week courses at the London Gliding Club, an experience I will always remember, especially the aerobatics on the last flight!
Hiya Halfloaf! The rod helps transmit information to the cockpit. It's called a pitot tube. The changing tone in the cockpit is actually a really handy instrument. When the tone goes high, the glider is receiving vertical lift (Either it be hot air, wind rushing up mounting or cliffs etc). The lower of a tone it gets the less vertical lift it gets. All gliders have a instrument called a Vertical Speed Indicator which shows how fast upwards your glider is going. The sound lets pilot - eyes on sky
Fantastic! Great spot too. If you can't climb enough to get home you can just land on the pastures and golf courses next to the cliffs and enjoy the view :) Btw, I liked it when you flew by the golfers who were putting :)
a spectacular flight,,,, I fly paragliding in Tenerife, Canary Islands and I love to fly soaring ... here there are several places for it, but do it in a glider is the ultimate. congratulations.
Wow, just watched this and was fascinated the whole way through. We often go on holiday to Beer and Sidmouth so know that area really well, though I've never seen it from quite that angle before :) I last flew a glider about 10 years ago jus,t after going solo, when my first child and a new house took most of my spare money. I really would like to get back into it, but I'll probably stick to thermal gliding for now. That really did look quite close in places ;). Thanks for the Vdeo, Epic :)
TalksWithDirt Speed is our indicator. if you know your plane you know how high you are able to pull up at different speeds :) We dont have to many instruments - and thats part of the beauty :) You should go try it sometime!!
A good rule of thumb is airspeed in knots divided by five, squared, gives the height gain in feet. e.g. 120 knots => 576 ft. Less the 100 ft to still have 50 knots flying speed equals 476 ft. (high school physics 0.5*mv^2 = mgh says multiply by 0.2106, so 0.2 allows for some drag loses)
@Wyvernpilot Totally agree with you - it's an incredibly inspirational video! - see you at the bus soon* Balleka - I wonder if any of your passengers ever have a clue about what kind of flying you really prefer.... ;-0 *Haha - you've got to work out who I am now!
You are crazy! I'm a glider pilot too, but I would never fly BELOW the altitude of the airport where I took off!! Anyway, amazing video, come to fly with us in Italian Alps!!
Fantastic - great scenery, intrepid flying, which for an early solo glider pilot is very inspiring! One question - did the other glider have twigs on his winglets from the rock polishing!
This guy made great videos I still don't understand how he crashed no one seems to be talking about what happened. I think it would be wise to discuss the accident maybe it can prevent others from being killed.
The official investigation takes time - the results will be published when they are ready. Public speculation based on gossip and other unreliable 'testimonies' would probably lead to wrong guestimates about the cause - that could actually prove harmful if someone takes them seriously. I guess that we just have to wait ...

far better than doing donuts in tesco car park.....silent flight rules.
Have watched this countless times over the years. There is something that keeps drawing me back. Truly breathtaking.
Still watching.

Wonderful film, as an old glider pilot back in the 70`s I could give a lot to experience this kind of flying!
RIP

absolutely fantastic flying. i have watched you fly by many a times and am so glad i have found the onboard footage!
That's pretty cool. I wondered what it must be like for the residents and all I can imagine is that it would be awe inspiring.

Beautiful video! Really nice flying and setting. The pilot in front of you really got my heart racing a few times, he has a little of the crazy!
The silence bit at 5:44 gets me everytime. Just as he turns back for home....
I did this run in motorglider RF5B some years ago but I don't remember switching off below cliff top height! Superb vid!.
Loved this video. You and your buddies are amazing pilots. What a beautiful place to fly. Keep up the good work.

DESDE ESPAÑA. Espectacular vuelo en ladera con velero.
Even better when you know well that coast line yourself.
amazing landscape, amazing video
left hand on the air-break ....and gazzzz
@cybersoft1 they are using ridge lift. When the wind from the sea hits those ridges it shoots up and carries the glider.
great video- breathtaking! thanks
Espectacular

Wonderful!
Nice video, that must have been great day for you two.

Excellent stuff!!! In Holland, some pilots run the dunes at the west-coast.. :)
