Love the Abbey but man it is expensive to get in mind and I think it looks so much better from a distance. Never been to Sandsend but it did look well worth a visit but defo not a swim and there goes another 10 subscribers lol! Ohh never knew about that Regatta weekend and all those stalls too, we will be there next year. I had two Ford Capri's with the second one a GT, superfast but man what a money pit it it turned out to be! I always love the shops in Whitby, so unique and always worth a good walk around and Greedy Pig would be right up my street too and yes, Mrs Metalman loves all the jet shops. Not a bad price for an emergency shoe stop and while everything else seems to be dying, Whitby seems to go from strength to strength, cheers Alan
thank you Alan 🙏🙏 we filmed this back in August and was set to go out on the lovely Mrs Metalmans birthday. we love Whitby, ive been visiting for well over 50 years and to this day, never once has it disappointed. the fact that we share the same council is an absolute mystery. i might be trying to pander to the youtube gods on occasion but im definitely no wiser. less so if anything. the success of the working class whitby high street is as much a mystery to me as why Scarborough’s high street is dying despite it being the second most popular place for tourist revenue outside of London. at a loss, no conclusions only dumbfounded questions. great to hear about your Capri. my Escort XR3i on an X reg probably cost me more than my first house to keep on the road! good times! 😂😂

I mean a HS2 line to Manchester? That might as well be Mars to us Northerners. There is no guarantee i could get to Manchester HS2 line in under 4 hours, got home from london yesterday in 4.5 hours in my own car. What point is HS2? An expensive waste of space that connects Mancs to the South at the expense of all our lovely countryside. If you have to live and work in the big smoke, move there, like i did in the 90s, don’t grumble that you can’t get there faster enough from Manchester.. 😂

The Abbey is incredible especially when you consider how old it is! Whitby is really a lovely town with so much going on, it's nice to see a success story with a thriving town.

Beckett's coffee shop is is a must for me on Skinner Street. Homemade soups and cakes make a great lunch and it's dog friendly. Much as I love Whitby, though, I'm glad you visited Sandsend. It's a smashing beach for families with young children. Clean, safe waters with a fresh water stream that opens out in to a lovely, shallow pool right on the sand. Perfect for toddlers and up to tens. Also ideal for old farts like me that get stressed out taking young uns on to busy beaches with crowded water. Definitely take the bus from Whitby as parking can be a pain at busy times. I can't remember - have you done Saltburn? Also a nice bus ride and a day out from Whitby.

Theres definitely a lot to do in Whitby, I loved the look around and would love to visit the abbey, so beautiful and the sound of the re enactment is appealing. The rose window is lovely. Sandsend looked really nice and romantic too 😃The arcade looked fun and the classic cars were great and good that the town centre is thriving. That wis such a lovely place 🙂👍~ Anna

Great to see Whitby thriving. The Abbey is a real icon ... Great value, that is if you have English Heritage membership haha otherwise I think I'd just be viewing from afar ... My luck would be to get caught jumping the fence 🤣 You always manage to come up with some fascinating "facts" about the monks 🤣😃🤣 Oh nooooo a footwear malfunction ! but you still managed a very stylish bridge twirl 😍phew ... loved the dancer icon 😁 Brilliant to see all those fabulous independent shops ... maybe its because Whitby has such a lot going on with all those events. My first car was a VW Beetle 😊 I had only had it a couple of weeks and pleased as punch took my fairly newish boyfriend for a drive in it ... he opened the door and got it stuck on a high kerb ... forcing it off the kerb, about 2 inches of rust fell off the bottom of the door 😭😭😭 I still married him 😆😆😆
Ah yes the Abbey, it is expensive and i really do think it coasts on its connection to Bram Stoker to draw videos, other than its prominent position on the cliff there is little left you can’t see from outside the grounds. If you get caught jumping the tiny tiny fence just say we told you to do so, im sure they will be ok with that! Some of those monkey facts are very compelling, especially where they swim and picnic, my favourites were where they kept the pet monkeys and locked up the naughty ones. Yes, Christine you nailed it. It has to be all the events, there is such a draw to the town centre almost every weekend there. The size of the retail units must also be a big plus as small independents can probably benefit from discounted business rates if the premises are small enough and its their primary source of income. Thats an amazing story about your VW Beetle! ❤❤

good morning Matt! apparently people do hop over that fence frequently, there really is no reason not too. same can be said for Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. its actually worth having membership to find out these things for future! 😂 yeah they only charge 50p a credit but they have the difficulty setting on high. i had a go on the donkey kong a week later and that was set high too. you can control the barrels from the start, something you shouldn’t be able to do until level 4! mis spent youth! Granada Scorpio nice. yes the insurance was probably 8x the cars value im guessing! think i was paying about £800+ a year to insure my first couple of cars. Whitby is amazing, you could keep visiting there and be blissfully unaware of the state of most towns and cities. bit like the MPs do in London or their middle class constituencies! 😂

Brilliant video, I loved to see Jill's take on success of the high street too and reading the comments it's so interesting drawing that contrast you point out between the high street in Whitby compared to Scarborough. I've only visited Whitby a couple of times but absolutely loved it and definitely looking forward to going back and having a proper explore after getting your wonderful hints and tips. The shops look great for a browse around and there's some excellent fish and chips in Whitby too! I am forever seeing Whitby scampi on the menu too, so obviously doing a very good trade in that. No idea if you'll read this and I do like you guys but one thing that puts the Mrs off and I do agree alittle is the slight disconnect in the overall video, so the video itself feels like a bunch of short facts/videos put together vs the picture of a whole, so like it goes, short interesting fact->travel/scene with music->bam short interesting fact etcetc, while fine I think alot of people would enjoy to hear you guys talk/even just walk n talking taking it in the sights/slowing down etc, keep up the good work anyway!

Hi Alistair, yes a lot of Whitby’s success has to be attributed to the sheer scale of events that happen in the town centre throughout the year. The retail units are relatively small too so independent traders can apply for rate relief. Its just lovely to visit a place that isn’t struggling. Definitely a mis spent youth in the arcades when I wasn’t venturing out to the pennines! Hope your having an awesome week ❤️ 🥾

Lovely video as you guys always do and we always learn something new. Whitby Abbey is always amazing isn’t it. The view back to Whitby from Sandsend is lovely and it’s a great to walk along the beach especially when the tide is out. Pac man - fantastic 🙌 used to love the pinball machines when I was at college - Star Wars (Data East version) always brings back memories - were off for the weekend at the end of October so I will have to check it out! We obviously want to visit the abbey, so iconic, would love to do it over Halloween, bet the atmosphere is amazing. Loved seeing the regatta weekend, perfect! But those old school arcades are where it's at, that's where you would find Brett spending all our pennies! You guys would love Whitby (not sure Brett would like the 199 steps 😂) but plenty of seats to take it easy although there is parking up at the abbey and you could walk down, we feel this is the much better option 👍 if you went Halloween weekend you would see the goths too! Unbelievably and unfathomably its the same Council. i guess the Councillors have more private interests in Whitby than they do in Scarborough or the ones in charge of Whitby wards have a better say than the ones in Scarborough. Scarborough Council, now re classed as part of North Yorkshire County Council is in charge of Filey, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. yet its only Scarborough’s town centre they have let go to rack and ruin. mind you there is still so much to enjoy in Scarborough, the town centre is very easy to skirt around and the millions of tourists that visit every year are probably all blissfully unaware of the state of the town centre! whitby is definitely better at organising events, think you might have hit the nail on the head there. so many events that bring people into the heart of the shops in Whitby. next up.. the main goth weekend at the end of this month. the place will be rammed.

There was always a massive jump a few levels in that caught me out! Then there was the Pac Man Worlds on the home consoles, wow, many a happy hour doing all the side missions. I love Whitby, I have yet to visit the Abbey though, maybe one day, but the views are still awesome from afar. It is a bigger area than I expected. Nor have we ever visited Sandsend, it looks like a lovely pretty place. Pleased the high street is still great in Whitby, other towns need to learn and grab more independent stores!! I am looking forward to your Italian videos, hope you had a fabulous time!

That sounds incredible! Yes honestly got the highest score set on that machine and they had the game set on a super difficult setting. Growing up in the 80s during the miner and teacher strikes gave me a fantastic knowledge of video games. During the teaching strikes children were not allowed on School premises if their teacher was in a trade union. All my teachers except my maths teacher were in Unions so my school years were spent in those arcades. What a great education! 😂 i did make up for it later, post graduate Bachelor of Science with Hons, PGCE, MCSE, MSOU but getting back on those 80s video games.. ..like riding a bike! Or possibly easier, I haven’t tried riding a bike in a very long time 😱

Definitely Paul its quite possibly the least hermit friendly place on the planet. Didnt know about the retro arcade until recently, its free to enter, has some great classics. Understandably not 20p to play anymore, but given the time difference 50p is ok.
Well first things first, what a lovely enjoyable film this was. Whitby Abbey is a place I’ve seen so many times on film but never been there. It’s certainly on my to do list. Lovely beach romping which made me want to shake off my slippers and paddle in the bath. Video games arcade, certainly not my cup of tea and the Pin Ball nonsense reminds me of the dreadful Elton John. Can’t stand any kinds of vintage cars, or indeed any bloody kind of automobile. Very pleased to see Whitby shops opened and doing well. Greedy Pigs, no sign of any food or even of Bill. No gate of the week? Despite all of my petty grumbles which of course you must take with a pinch of salt, this was an outstanding film produced and staring two brilliant cinematic geniuses. Yes definitely a FIVE STAR FIM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ❤️

High score on the Pac Man machine suggests an mis-spent youth 😂 I remember when Space Invaders arrived. Pinball arcades changed over night from pinball machines to Spacies. My first car was a baby shit brown TD Cortina! 2 litres of get up and go. I always wanted to drop a V6 from a Capri in it but ended up tweaking the 2L slightly. A bit of rocket for rusty piece of crap I paid $800 for from a wreckers. I spent more on the car stereo than the car. 😂 5 out of 5 for the nostalgia 😁 You're approaching 2K subs now! Nice work!!!
gosh yes, very mis spent youth! a lot of the time i should have been at School was spent in the arcades, i blame the teacher union and miner strikes of the 80s for this though! I remember Space Invaders arriving, prior to that it had been pong, luna lander and one of my all time favourites gunfight. I could never get near the Space Invaders at launch, all the scary punks would monopolise the machines. Try putting a 10p on the glass to queue for a turn with those guys… love the colour of your Cortina, mine was a dark blue! beast of a car though, it was like driving a rocket. Sadly it did rocket into a ditch whereby i replaced it with an Escort XR3i which broke down every week except one week, on that week it got broken into! a free car show and free entry to a retro arcade? only in Whitby!
I know downtowns in general are bad. I'm researching looking around Whitby downtown Mason Dr & Dovedale Dr do you know that area? Do you know if this is safe area and are tentants pool bad in that area like Oshwa downtown? Anything you can share about that area would be apperiated.

thank you Alan 🙏🙏 we filmed this back in August and was set to go out on the lovely Mrs Metalmans birthday. we love Whitby, ive been visiting for well over 50 years and to this day, never once has it disappointed. the fact that we share the same council is an absolute mystery. i might be trying to pander to the youtube gods on occasion but im definitely no wiser. less so if anything. the success of the working class whitby high street is as much a mystery to me as why Scarborough’s high street is dying despite it being the second most popular place for tourist revenue outside of London. at a loss, no conclusions only dumbfounded questions.

I mean a HS2 line to Manchester? That might as well be Mars to us Northerners. There is no guarantee i could get to Manchester HS2 line in under 4 hours, got home from london yesterday in 4.5 hours in my own car. What point is HS2? An expensive waste of space that connects Mancs to the South at the expense of all our lovely countryside. If you have to live and work in the big smoke, move there, like i did in the 90s, don’t grumble that you can’t get there faster enough from Manchester.. 😂

Beckett's coffee shop is is a must for me on Skinner Street. Homemade soups and cakes make a great lunch and it's dog friendly.
Much as I love Whitby, though, I'm glad you visited Sandsend. It's a smashing beach for families with young children. Clean, safe waters with a fresh water stream that opens out in to a lovely, shallow pool right on the sand. Perfect for toddlers and up to tens. Also ideal for old farts like me that get stressed out taking young uns on to busy beaches with crowded water. Definitely take the bus from Whitby as parking can be a pain at busy times.
I can't remember - have you done Saltburn? Also a nice bus ride and a day out from Whitby.

Theres definitely a lot to do in Whitby, I loved the look around and would love to visit the abbey, so beautiful and the sound of the re enactment is appealing. The rose window is lovely. Sandsend looked really nice and romantic too 😃The arcade looked fun and the classic cars were great and good that the town centre is thriving. That wis such a lovely place 🙂👍~ Anna

Great to see Whitby thriving. The Abbey is a real icon ... Great value, that is if you have English Heritage membership haha otherwise I think I'd just be viewing from afar ... My luck would be to get caught jumping the fence 🤣 You always manage to come up with some fascinating "facts" about the monks 🤣😃🤣 Oh nooooo a footwear malfunction ! but you still managed a very stylish bridge twirl 😍phew ... loved the dancer icon 😁 Brilliant to see all those fabulous independent shops ... maybe its because Whitby has such a lot going on with all those events. My first car was a VW Beetle 😊 I had only had it a couple of weeks and pleased as punch took my fairly newish boyfriend for a drive in it ... he opened the door and got it stuck on a high kerb ... forcing it off the kerb, about 2 inches of rust fell off the bottom of the door 😭😭😭 I still married him 😆😆😆
Ah yes the Abbey, it is expensive and i really do think it coasts on its connection to Bram Stoker to draw videos, other than its prominent position on the cliff there is little left you can’t see from outside the grounds. If you get caught jumping the tiny tiny fence just say we told you to do so, im sure they will be ok with that!
Some of those monkey facts are very compelling, especially where they swim and picnic, my favourites were where they kept the pet monkeys and locked up the naughty ones.
Yes, Christine you nailed it. It has to be all the events, there is such a draw to the town centre almost every weekend there. The size of the retail units must also be a big plus as small independents can probably benefit from discounted business rates if the premises are small enough and its their primary source of income.

good morning Matt! apparently people do hop over that fence frequently, there really is no reason not too. same can be said for Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. its actually worth having membership to find out these things for future! 😂 yeah they only charge 50p a credit but they have the difficulty setting on high. i had a go on the donkey kong a week later and that was set high too. you can control the barrels from the start, something you shouldn’t be able to do until level 4! mis spent youth! Granada Scorpio nice. yes the insurance was probably 8x the cars value im guessing! think i was paying about £800+ a year to insure my first couple of cars. Whitby is amazing, you could keep visiting there and be blissfully unaware of the state of most towns and cities. bit like the MPs do in London or their middle class constituencies! 😂

The insurance I was quoted by one place as £2.7k 😂 That was in the days when you had to ring round all the insurance companies, what a ballache! It was a 2.8i which was ridiculous really. Sounds about right, I'm sure Rishi Sunak isn't too troubled by the plight of Middlesbrough and Scarborough when he's sitting in his mews house in Kensington, mansion in Richmond or penthouse in Santa Monica!

You can guarantee that Scarborough Council will fail to acquire a penny of that levelling up money too. Useless…

Brilliant video, I loved to see Jill's take on success of the high street too and reading the comments it's so interesting drawing that contrast you point out between the high street in Whitby compared to Scarborough. I've only visited Whitby a couple of times but absolutely loved it and definitely looking forward to going back and having a proper explore after getting your wonderful hints and tips. The shops look great for a browse around and there's some excellent fish and chips in Whitby too! I am forever seeing Whitby scampi on the menu too, so obviously doing a very good trade in that. No idea if you'll read this and I do like you guys but one thing that puts the Mrs off and I do agree alittle is the slight disconnect in the overall video, so the video itself feels like a bunch of short facts/videos put together vs the picture of a whole, so like it goes, short interesting fact->travel/scene with music->bam short interesting fact etcetc, while fine I think alot of people would enjoy to hear you guys talk/even just walk n talking taking it in the sights/slowing down etc, keep up the good work anyway!

Hi Alistair, yes a lot of Whitby’s success has to be attributed to the sheer scale of events that happen in the town centre throughout the year. The retail units are relatively small too so independent traders can apply for rate relief. Its just lovely to visit a place that isn’t struggling. Definitely a mis spent youth in the arcades when I wasn’t venturing out to the pennines! Hope your having an awesome week ❤️ 🥾

Lovely video as you guys always do and we always learn something new. Whitby Abbey is always amazing isn’t it. The view back to Whitby from Sandsend is lovely and it’s a great to walk along the beach especially when the tide is out. Pac man - fantastic 🙌 used to love the pinball machines when I was at college - Star Wars (Data East version) always brings back memories - were off for the weekend at the end of October so I will have to check it out!

Loved the Whitby Abbey tour, the toe dipping walk on the Sandsend beach, Nick playing PacMan (showing your age there mate😉) and those awesome pinball machines (spent too much money on these myself growing up... along space invaders and Donkey Kong🙄). This was another wonderful adventure from the two of you! Thank you for sharing the delights of Whitby! All on a budget too, what more could you want. We obviously want to visit the abbey, so iconic, would love to do it over Halloween, bet the atmosphere is amazing. Loved seeing the regatta weekend, perfect! But those old school arcades are where it's at, that's where you would find Brett spending all our pennies! Unbelievably and unfathomably its the same Council. i guess the Councillors have more private interests in Whitby than they do in Scarborough or the ones in charge of Whitby wards have a better say than the ones in Scarborough. Scarborough Council, now re classed as part of North Yorkshire County Council is in charge of Filey, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. yet its only Scarborough’s town centre they have let go to rack and ruin.
mind you there is still so much to enjoy in Scarborough, the town centre is very easy to skirt around and the millions of tourists that visit every year are probably all blissfully unaware of the state of the town centre!
whitby is definitely better at organising events, think you might have hit the nail on the head there. so many events that bring people into the heart of the shops in Whitby. next up.. the main goth weekend at the end of this month. the place will be rammed.

Thank you so much Fred. lifelong fan of pacman. Pacman was always about the patterns, ms pacman was about herding the ghosts, this machine was way too fast to attempt that! Pac Land. I adored that. There was always a massive jump a few levels in that caught me out! Then there was the Pac Man Worlds on the home consoles, wow, many a happy hour doing all the side missions. I love Whitby, I have yet to visit the Abbey though, maybe one day, but the views are still awesome from afar. It is a bigger area than I expected. Nor have we ever visited Sandsend, it looks like a lovely pretty place. Pleased the high street is still great in Whitby, other towns need to learn and grab more independent stores!! I am looking forward to your Italian videos, hope you had a fabulous time!
Thanks so much Nettie, yes we had a wonderful time in Italy, didn’t want to leave. The footage is still uploading to the cloud, will probably take months to organise but it will allow me to enjoy my hols that much longer as i edit away! 👍

thank you Ms Kayak. no rest for the wicked sadly. back in the wee hours yesterday and it was straight back to work a few hours later and back out to work today 😟 Whitby really is a wonderful budget destination that is bucking the dire situation on the UKs high streets. its lovely to visit a place where every shop and pub is open! October brings the largest goth weekend of the year to Whitby. im almost certainly covering that! 👍

That sounds incredible! Yes honestly got the highest score set on that machine and they had the game set on a super difficult setting. Growing up in the 80s during the miner and teacher strikes gave me a fantastic knowledge of video games. During the teaching strikes children were not allowed on School premises if their teacher was in a trade union. All my teachers except my maths teacher were in Unions so my school years were spent in those arcades. What a great education! 😂 i did make up for it later, post graduate Bachelor of Science with Hons, PGCE, MCSE, MSOU but getting back on those 80s video games..
..like riding a bike! Or possibly easier, I haven’t tried riding a bike in a very long time 😱

Wow a lot going on in Whitby. I think the retro arcade was awesome. I'd be looking for games I used to be able to completer in 80s after college. Cool old cars. Good to see some high street are thriving but I guess Whitby isn't hermit friendly and has a lot of footfall 😊
Definitely Paul its quite possibly the least hermit friendly place on the planet. Didnt know about the retro arcade until recently, its free to enter, has some great classics. Understandably not 20p to play anymore, but given the time difference 50p is ok.
Well first things first, what a lovely enjoyable film this was. Whitby Abbey is a place I’ve seen so many times on film but never been there. It’s certainly on my to do list. Lovely beach romping which made me want to shake off my slippers and paddle in the bath. Video games arcade, certainly not my cup of tea and the Pin Ball nonsense reminds me of the dreadful Elton John. Can’t stand any kinds of vintage cars, or indeed any bloody kind of automobile. Very pleased to see Whitby shops opened and doing well. Greedy Pigs, no sign of any food or even of Bill. No gate of the week? Despite all of my petty grumbles which of course you must take with a pinch of salt, this was an outstanding film produced and staring two brilliant cinematic geniuses. Yes definitely a FIVE STAR FIM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ❤️

My first car was a baby shit brown TD Cortina! 2 litres of get up and go. I always wanted to drop a V6 from a Capri in it but ended up tweaking the 2L slightly. A bit of rocket for rusty piece of crap I paid $800 for from a wreckers. I spent more on the car stereo than the car. 😂

gosh yes, very mis spent youth! a lot of the time i should have been at School was spent in the arcades, i blame the teacher union and miner strikes of the 80s for this though! I remember Space Invaders arriving, prior to that it had been pong, luna lander and one of my all time favourites gunfight. I could never get near the Space Invaders at launch, all the scary punks would monopolise the machines. Try putting a 10p on the glass to queue for a turn with those guys…
love the colour of your Cortina, mine was a dark blue! beast of a car though, it was like driving a rocket. Sadly it did rocket into a ditch whereby i replaced it with an Escort XR3i which broke down every week except one week, on that week it got broken into!

I know downtowns in general are bad. I'm researching looking around Whitby downtown Mason Dr & Dovedale Dr do you know that area? Do you know if this is safe area and are tentants pool bad in that area like Oshwa downtown? Anything you can share about that area would be apperiated.
Ah the one in Ontario! Crime rates look low there overall with higher than average reported drug use and vandalism, so pretty minor..
