Triumph Bonneville T120 long term review. WHAT THE OTHER REVIEWS DIDNT TELL YOU!

  • Ive lived with the Bonnie for almost 6 months now., and for all the research i did before purchasing, nothing prepared me for the realities of ownership! first impression reviews and press reviews can only scratch the surface, but ownership, in time, reveals the good, the bad, and the ugly!

      Stuart, I've heard from other riders that the biggest problem with triumphs is the indifference of the dealers, as you say they just shrug their shoulders when you point out a defect, do you think that this is still the case, and would that influence you buying another triumph.

    Great to have a honest review very informative. It's such a pity that the dealerships can't be honest and help sort out problems instead of putting up obstacles.

    Great review!! Most reviewers provide a full review within 2 days of getting the bike but you on the other hand actually rode the bike for long time and provided a honest and professional review.
    I wanna ask if these problems are still present in newer models. Also if T100 is a better choice over T120 (no financial restrictions).

    Thanks for excellent reviews Stuart. Love watching your channel! I'm totally hooked on the T120 and looking to get one in the spring. I am planning to use it for commute a couple days of the week. But approx 20 minutes of the roas to work is a 70 mph speed limit highway. Do you think that would be ok with the T120 in terms of wind and comfort at higher speeds?

    Good review. I've had my T120 black since April last year and use it every day, rain or shine as a commuter in London. Over 4K miles so far.
    I love it, and getting up for work is that much easier very day knowing I get to ride it to the office, but it does have some quirks:
    1. Those squeaky brakes. I mean, you cruise up to the traffic lights, engine sounds great, looking good, then eeeeeeeeeeek. Kinda ruins the moment.
    2. The black version holds up tho the elements much better than the chrome, but has deloped a few rust spots, particularly around the shocks and spokes. That said, mine lives outdoors under a cover all year and gets used in all weathers so it's to be expected. Recently treated the whole thing with ACF 50 and that seems to have made a big difference. I'd recommend it.
    3. I've had a few electrical issues. Firstly the hazard lights only working on one side, water ingress setting the alarm off (admittedly after a visit to the local hand car wash, so probably my fault), rear brake sticking (light permanently on), product recall on fuel pump as mentioned in the review, and finally the issue they are now recalling where the throttle sticks due to expansion of the rubber when the heated grips are on. Sounds bad when you write it down, but the guys at Metropolis in Vauxhall have sorted all the problems our straight away without any issues.
    4. Tubed tyres. I know the deal with spoked wheels but I've had 2 flats so far and they really ruin your day. Much easier to plug a tubeless tyre and get on the move again. I wish they'd do a deal with Alpina or someone and fit tubeless spoked rims as standard. It's supposed to be a modern bike after all.
    All this aside though. The bike just makes me happy. When you have a connection with a bike you can forgive a lot, and I wouldn't change it. Roll on the summer!
    Also, Stuart - does your fly screen make much of a difference at high speeds?

    • @stuartfillingham7011
      @stuartfillingham7011 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dan Vickers hey Dan, yeah in some ways I think triumph have been a victim of their own success and they were not prepared for the sales they actually recieved. problem is they put all the warranty issues on a back burner and prioritized sales and development, which is a shame because they have let a lot of people down!
      re acf50 I agree it is good stuff! ive not heard aout the throttle sticking problem that sounds a little worrying! im dealing with a different dealership to the one I bought the bike from now. the original one just dealt with everything using lies and disinformation. you sound like your dealer is more honest and on the the ball!

      Dan Vickers oh and ive just done a review on the screen, uploaded on thursday, and yes it does make a difference. tbh I would go for the triumph one ive heard the fit and finnish is much better, please let me know how you get on if you get one.

      Stuart Fillingham there's now a recall about the Bonnie throttle. Saw it against a photo of a T100, but if there's shared components, it may affect yours, so certainly worth a call.
      Gorgeous bikes! I was messing around on the configurator earlier, and I think I'd actually go for a modded Street Twin as I love the deep red tank.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is one of lifes great mysteries sir! i believe its a mismatch between the brake pad and disc that causes resonance however a hard braking regime for the first hundred miles or so seems to sort it and Triumph have eliminated it on the latest models!

    After all the years that Triumph have been building the Hinckley Bonnevilles , this bike should be perfect . I'll be hanging on to my Suzuki Intruder 1500 for quite some time , as i believe it's a much better bike in every way , especially with it's shaft - drive , excellent handling ( for a cruiser ) , reliability , and fuel consumption . Have owned 2 Bonnie's , so i do know what i'm talking about .

    This is the best review I’ve seen. I found a gently used 2018 at a dealer near me yesterday and am buying it. Had gone into the dealer looking at a Husky Svartpilen 701 and saw that they had the Bonnie that they had just taken in. It’s in perfect shape.
    Stu, your review is great and is an eye opener as to what to expect. Some of the issues you pointed out are a little unnerving and I do hope they sorted them out by the 2018 model year. I guess I’ll have to see how it goes for me. I need a bike like this that still has some soul. I could go for a Japanese naked/standard or even modern retro but they just seem too bland.
    I love your final analogy comparing the Bonnie to an ex-girlfriend. Haha! Awesome.

  • @CaptainRambunctious
    @CaptainRambunctious 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Oh, and I got my gauges replaced on my Thruxton R under warranty, and my replacements condensed up too! :-)
    The wiring loom was also replaced under warranty... They did that the same time as my decat...
    Also, my engine cases (brushed aluminium) pitted fairly badly, and they aren't covered under warranty. This is my only negative on the engine cases.
    My dealership had been excellent. Herts Triumph. But mainly it seems to be that Triumph claim that the dealers should tell customers all these details, but the dealers do not know this... Perhaps, better communication with your dealerships Triumph!! So expectations can be equal on all sides...
    Message ends...

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes there does seem to be a distinct lack of communication between the two, well, the three if you include the customer. if your casings have not gone too far they can be brought back up again with a bodyshop scotch pad, then just keep a good coating of ACF50 on the casings to stop it happening again! only brush it one way though with the pads to replicate the original finish. Thanks for taking the time to comment Sir Im honoured!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh tish, don't be silly. Yes, I ACF50'd far too late... Getting them powder coated now, much cheaper than replacing... Also much better protection... they really should let people know that it is untreated brushed aluminium... I'm doing my best to spread the word. At least the chromed versions are slightly hardier...
      Thanks again! :-)

    Now THAT was a great review! I feel like I've finally been let in on the whole truth. The lack of quality control unfortunately brings back old memories which is quite a shame since these new Bonnevilles are otherwise so very appealing. You'd think they'd have learned better from the past.

    Great honest review.. I am seriously thinking of buying a T120 next spring but finding it difficult to make my mind up between the Triumph or a HD Sportster 1200.. same bike I actually passed my bike test on years ago.. I keep hearing bad things about Triumphs and it is starting to put me off a bit.. I know the front end is a bit soft so may need to change the springs. But really shocked to hear what you have said about water getting into clocks and headlight unit and the fuel pump leak seems really bad but what is getting me is the lack of interest that Triumph is showing towards its costumers.. I'm hoping that since you made this video that Triumph have sorted all these problems out in the newer T120 machines..
    Thanks again for the great review 👍 Ride safe 🏍

      I must have got lucky with mine , having ridden through some serious storms and routinely washing with the hose - which is why I got the T120 Black- wash it like a car and job done.
      No leaks yet and up to 6700km but will be keeping an eye on this now I'm aware.
      If I want to polish chrome and alloy I still have my Meriden 750 to look after but do like the look of the MY16 T120 with chrome and polished cases.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Triumph do keep telling me I have just been very unlucky with mine, not much comfort, have to take it back for a fourth set of clocks now, new ones leak too!

    • @ThreenaddiesRexMegistus
      @ThreenaddiesRexMegistus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder if the clocks are all made in the same place?
      My bike is assembled in Thailand , as far as I know , but you'd think they would tend to make sub-components in one location given that container shipping is cheap.
      But maybe it is a local batch problem and they keep dipping into the 'bad' bin for you to have had such a bad run?
      Triumph are pretty mysterious about the innards of these things.
      I have read about a few condensation issues on the forums but yours seems to be another thing entirely.
      Pretty sure I'd be rightly pissed off after four sets too.

    • @stuartfillingham

    I think in life as I get older perfection is only a dream, the t120 looks gorgeous, I'm not perfect, I'm sure with stuarts advice me and the bonnie will be best of friends.

    Great videos Stuart, very informative and helpful. I've only recently found them and started to watch them, as it's only in the last week or so that i've started to look at T120 reviews on etc, and am now considering buying one, and parting company with my trusty Bandit 1250S. Despite the few teething problems you've experienced, the T120 certainly seems to be quite an awesome modern classic. I had a Kawasaki W650 retro bike a while back which i really enjoyed, although i found it a bit small/cramped for my 6' tall frame, but the Bonneville seems to have alot more legroom. I wanted to ask you though (and apologies if you've already covered this elsewhere in another video), but what are your views on the practicality and relative robustness of modern 'tubed wheels/tyres' (such as used on the T120 and most other spoked wheel classics of course), in regard to using a bike like the T120 for longer trips/weekends/touring etc.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not experienced any problems so far sir! at the end of the day we managed with tubed tyres for decades and although tubeless does have its advantages i dont think tubed tyres should put you off!

    These intrigue me. I have a 2010 bought new and I've done some work to it. The motor is opened up and running as it should. Your review of the new engine reminds me of my impressions of the old lump in stock form. Anyway, they did a fantastic job with the looks of the new liquid cooled twin. It's definitely classic looking. Good honest review. I'll note that I have had only one issue with my last generation Bonnie: weeping oil from a couple gaskets. It's not terrible and owning several old machines, it's no big deal at all, but it's something you notice on a new machine.

    Good honest review!
    If Triumph never fully sort their wiring problem or you aren't happy with their fix, keep aircraft fuel tank sealant in mind. The stuff may be the best sealant/formable gasket material/potting compound ever and lasts decades on jet fighters and nearly every other aircraft.
    Aircraft Spruce in CONUS stock it and I've no doubt aviation suppliers in the UK can get it for you. Every mechanic should buy a kit to play with. It's indifferent to gasoline, alcohol, diesel, jet fuel, hydraulic fluid, and has excellent wetting. I've also used it to pot old-style Amphenol plugs and it's better than potting compound. It seals ancient vertically split motorcycle crankcases too.

    I test rode one last week, along with the speed master..I've watched all of your reviews!
    Great stuff thank you.
    I have a serious concern here in Arizona, USA. It was 80F and oh my, the heat would be unbearable on a hotter day if stuck in traffic due to the fan kicking all that heat to your knees. As a daily commute on my Trophy SE, it too suffers from a high level of heat on my left foot. I'm going to be commuting on my trusty 09 Speed Triple yet again this year.
    I loved the ride of this Bonneville though, smooth, compliant and plenty of power. Thanks again for your reviews!!

    good review. i've had mine for 12,000 miles now, never picked up the wheel squeak but i am in a hot dry climate. only problem ive had is when it gets around 35+ celcius outside, the idle can drop very low and on three occassions it cut out on me while sat at lights.
    Otherwise love my t120.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm never encounter temperature like that here in the UK, but it doesn't surprise me that it would cut out sometimes. re brake squeal your a lucky man! its horrible. having said that mine has not done it for some time, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

    Great review - wonderfully honest. This model makes me long for the old Speed Twin we had 40 years ago, but I'd like a quiet front brake! I'm on a Speedmaster and besides only having 5 short gears, whines like a little girl when I tap off.... time for new pipes? Thanks!

    This winter has been a bitch, cheer up, spring will eventually show it's face. I like your candid assessment. I was a long-time BMW rider as well, but I do not regret switching to a Triumph. My riding needs changed much like yours (we've been riding about the same number of years and I suspect we are similar ages).

    In the late sixties the Triumph was all the rage , one good looking piece of machinery it was. The BSA looked old and sort of dull . The Enfield a bit rare on our shores . What was evident at the time the Bonnie was faster but for ever in the darn shops while the BSA was chugging along like a proverbial ugly tractor . I still despise the Bonnie for looking so good and being not up to parr mechanically ,my humble opinion.

    Great Review. Had my T120 a month . Only got 300 miles on it as the squeak when low speed braking is driving me mental . Feel like I'm on a rusty BMX. Was gonna get it looked at on the first service but worried it's a permanent feature .

    I’m from the U.S. and being from the former colony’s I for one love your videos. I’m considering purchasing a new bike and since I’ve not ridden in 25 years I must say I’m a little intimidated. I’m 6’0’ and 230lbs. When I see a picture of myself on a 2017 t120, I look too big for it. Would you offer your opinion on which bike would be a good fit for me? I’m also considering a Speedmaster 1200, and maybe even a storm. I realize the ergonomics of these 3 bikes àre considerably different. 90% of the time, it will be commuting; then the other 10% will be interstate riding with my better half. I realize I’m asking a difficult question but I cannot seem to get an honest, satisfying answer from the salespersons at my local dealers, but I highly value your opinion on the subject. Thank you!

    • @stuartfillingham7011
      @stuartfillingham7011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right Jon. Honest opinion! Dont worry about what you look like on a bike as long as it feels comfortable to ride. Dont think about how other people view you when your on it. Just enjoy how the bike makes you feel When your riding it. Because at the end of the day thats what bikes are all about! The bonnie can do all that you require and so can the speedmaster. Just go for the one you love the most!

    • @johnmcateer4000
      @johnmcateer4000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the quick response. It’s not so much that I’m afraid of what I look like. It’s will the bike handle me and a passenger. I’m also considering the triumph thunderbird commander just to accommodate my wife. But I prefer the standard riding position and I believe the Bonneville will be s better commuter. She will only be with me 10% of the time but I do want her to be confident. Thanks again!

    I have the same issues with Triumph. My 2001 speed triple had a couple recalls including leaking plastic fuel line connectors. I replaced them with metal at my own expense but when I wrote them about paying me back they never responded. I'm sure they do this to many owners so they will get discouraged and go away. I love my bike and plan to buy another someday Despite the poor customer service. That's how much I Love Triumph motorcycles.😍🤩

    Sounds like you've got a really crap Triumph Dealership there. I'm 61 yrs and been with bikes since I was 16 yrs, still riding today. (thankfully) I was in the Motorcycle Trade for many years, spannering, working on Meriden Triumphs, Kawasakis, Hondas, Suzukis etc... The customer was always looked after, even the Pain in the Arse ones, because without customers the businesses would have folded. I was looking at the new T120 in the local Triumph showroom only last night. I am wary of modern dealerships and normally buy privately but servicing at home, with all the new electronics, means having to trust a dealer to be honest and helpful. Thanks for an honest review. On a lighter note, my first wife could have been a model too and I likened her to an E type Jag. Lovely to look at, expensive to run and maintain and a pain in the arse when things went wrong ! What are we like ? Mac. Kent

    How are you getting on with your T120 re the gearing, the noisy brakes and the water retention issues around the clocks and headlights?
    Close to buying one to go alongside my Z900RS..
    Just a bit concerned these issues have not been addressed..
    As you say its embarrassing when get the attention of the whole area when you stop.

    Good review sir. I enjoyed the somewhat familiar scenery: I live in Hornsea.
    I've been thinking of buying the T100, which has many parts in common with the T120, so I am a little concerned about the attitude of the dealership towards your concerns. The dealership I was considering is the one in a large city to the north of Beverley.
    I was also looking at the BMW F700GS. Maybe I'll plump for that one as it's been tried and tested.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ditched the dealership I originally bought the bike from, and switched to A1 Moto at York who so far have been way better! They were not the dealership I was referring to, and to be honest the main problems I had related to a particular salesman!
      The BMW F700 is ok, I did own one a few years ago but to be honest BMW quality is not particularly good it has slipped a lot over the last 10 years! As with Triumph, the words "premium brand" refer more to their opinion of themselves than the quality of their products

    Interesting points I appreciate the honesty. Some people don't want to admit the flaws of a new model because they've spent too much money on it. Now that 2018 models are on sale I wonder if those have any changes. The brake calipers for the price of the bike should be Brembo, even a low end Brembo. I'll be back working at a Triumph dealer now so I can't wait to get some test rides in! Not sure if I'll buy one, but I do have a strong affinity for the brand. Cheers.

    Worthwhile watching, but there’s got to be a standard for “long term”. This isn’t necessarily a criticism of this review, but most “long term” reviews that barely reach the break in period. That said, when Triumph’s quality controls reaches the Japanese standards, I’ll seriously consider buying one.

    Quite an entertaining review. Give 'em this much, @ least these still have the same header pipe length differential as the early Bonnevilles, in order to route round the primary casing, which in return attested to their unique sound signature. What should have been removed is that ugly ass fin seam along the bottom of the gas tank. Lost as well on these newer bikes is the see through beauty of an open air engine jugs, much like that of a light weight aircraft power plant. Faking those unneeded cylinder fins & carb. structures... Well, that ain't really legal neither... @ least in the mind of the purist vintage owner. Hell, might be i'm just a biased 68 Trophy Sports owner, that's all. Oh yeah, dug the girlfriend comparison the most! -gilpin 22017
