you didn't mention the easter egg with the DB quest, if you drop the mother's head item in front of the 3 standing there it will reveal the real traitor by having them freak out
Curing vampirism in Oblivion is the single best atmospheric, Morrowind-style "this is actual role playing" quest in the game. I caught it accidentally on my first one, and didn't cure it fast enough. Cut to me being underleveled, completely alone, underequipped, having to hide in bandit and monster caves during the daylight without fast travel options, slogging it from one rumor to the next to find a cure as my situation got worse and worse because I refused to feed. It was stressful as hell and I LOVED it.
One of my Oblivion jumpscares was falling asleep for the first time in Benirus Manor and waking to Lucien Lachance telling me I sleep rather soundly for a murderer.
I find the oblivion gates in general as spooky. The "chests" called the Punished, the hanging corpses that are on fire... it all adds to me wanting to get the sigil stones as quickly as possible. But I think Morrowind does spooky vibes the best. Walk into any crypt and listen to the ghosts and skeletons.
What makes Vaermina's quest even creepier is that if you discovered Arkved's Tower before the quest, youll assume its just a normal fort from the outside before the quest not knowing what lies inside
@@Skylerjones624 woah! That would be wild. I’m surprised that didn’t happen to me since I’ve played so long, and I avoided the Shrine quests for some reason. But I explored a LOT.
@@emmawills4112 Yeah so if you discovered Arkved's Tower while exploring before the quest you thought it was a normal fort like the others around the map
I love the various themes of Oblivion, like you've got the whimsical world of the shivering isles then you've got the dark brotherhood questline, which by the end tells a story of betrayal, nice video by the way
It's not a part of a quest, but Nerasteral's house in Skingrad has always kinda creeped me out. It's a run-down manor infested with undead, and there's no explanation or even _hint_ as to how it got to that point. The closest we get is when Amusei tells us to look behind Nerastarel's house during the Thieves' Guild questline. Part of what makes it so unsettling is, it's not out in the ass-end of nowhere, like the "Isolated House" in the West Weald, or the infamous Hackdirt; it's right in the middle of *SKINGRAD,* one of the largest and most affluent cities in Cyrodiil.
Ironically I never made it to these quests when I played Oblivion. I had stolen something and I got approached by the female dark elf who gives you the note about the thieves guild. Because I wasnt paying attention, it zoomed in on her face when I wasn't expecting anyone to talk to me. And it scared me so much as a kid I didn't pick the game again.
@@emmawills4112 tw for SA: long story short Molag Bal forced himself on a woman, she died but came back as a daughter of coldharbor and that's how Vampirism started. It later spread and mutated into different strands of the illness. The Dawnguard DLC goes more into it, it's part of the reason I dislike people who want to marry Serana because there's trauma reasons she's against it
I played this game like 20 years ago and all these quests got my little heart racing and possibly sparked my love of horror and suspense. All outstanding quests.
I can't believe I've never done or knew of the Vaerminas quest. I don't have as many hours in Oblivion as I do Morrowind and Skyrim. But still have played it a lot
You always put out content at the best times, I’m at work just bored af and BAM! Dope content by one of my favorite TH-camrs. You’re the best man and have a happy Halloween!
Awesome topic for a video and perfect for Halloween! So many of oblivion's quests would work great as short stories. And watching channels like yours and Dark Lore Dash are like listening to the audiobook version of them!
Lorgren Benirus and Gedna Relvel are my two favorite liches in the games since they actually do things and are scary looking and intimidating. Gedna being my favorite cause of the glitch that makes her more powerful than a max level character without the fortify attribute spell glitch.
I remember playing Where Spirits Have Lease for the first time when i was 10. Absolutely shit my pants when my character woke up to ghosts because i wasnt expecting it
I was a child watching my teen brother play Morrowind. When I played morrowind I wouldn't dare go into the ancestral tombs. When oblivion came out, I was 11. I was courageous enough to beat the game by myself. You bet your ass it was terrifying at the time. It took me so long to muster up the courage to fight lord Leviticus (the gray princes dad) The deadric quest where you have to cleanse the vampire tomb was also scary. I think it was for azura
Following a Lead IS SPOOKY! We are venturing into the lion’s den: the lair of one of our own in the Dark Brotherhood! The fear factor is possibly running into the traitor, and it is heightened by the horrific gore we find under the lighthouse. It reaches a peak when we go back to Applewatch and discover our only friend left in the Brotherhood- and perhaps much more than that to some of us- has been killed and mutilated beyond recognition.
I'd switch Following the lead for the Leyawiin countess torture one. Both are detective mysteries, but, as you've said, by that point in the DB storyline you're a desensitized stone cold killer.
What makes Oblivion unnerving is Bethesdas ability for subtle storytelling. At face value they may not be scary but when you really sit and thing about some of these, and really understand what lies underneath, it is scary
Oblivion was never scary but it's really good at hitting the spooky vibe. Surprising, considering how soft the art style is. It's a very cozy game normally but some of those Dark Brotherhood quests and Hackdirt are downright sinister
Every dungeon felt cursed, you go from the bright vibrant world of above to a dark, damp and decrepit place, accompanied by the best dungeon music this ip has ever seen, daggerfall close 2nd tho
"Given this games age and the current fanbase for it, i doubt any of these quests would get the heart racing and the skin crawling as they would back in the day" I have literally never been able to do the anvil house quest despite playing this game for over a decade because it scares the crap out of me. Every time i go into the anvil lighthouse basement, I have to take a solid few minutes to calm down because I always get jump scared by the dog down there. Moral of the story: Anvil is scary as hell and I hate it there. (Also is anyone else absolutely terrified of the zombies in oblivion??? Things creep me out. Drauger could never)
i remember faces of people from hackdirt looking twisted, deformed and angry, which only added to the horror aspect of the quest. arent you using some "better faces" mods, since they look much more normal in your video?
The first zombie that stumbles around the corner in the tutorial almost spooked 13 year old me out of playing the rest of the game 😂
Based
Glad it wasn’t just me
😂 honestly a great call, that thing scared me too!
I used to make my sister play through that part!!! lol. It still gets my heart beating fast from how scared it always made me haha
Dude, same!

The cure is such a pain but you’re totally right, very Morrowind-like!!

I agree! The oblivion gates are some of the most unsettling things in the game!!

"The Horror, The Horror." Apocalypse Now reference sadly missed in my Oblivion playing youth

There’s definitely a lot of unique environments within the game!!
The Mother Draconis tombstone definitely is up there.
That “curse” message still gives me chills.

Very true! It’s pretty creepy that the undead are just in there! Plus, I think there’s like burnt down trees in the yard too!

😂 honestly, sometimes the dialogue zoom in is the most frightening thing to happen in the game. It’s so sudden and quick 😂
Also, considering how Vampirism came to be in the Elder Scrolls universe, that alone is creepy enough
For real! 😂 vampirism as a whole is just unsettling in this universe
Oooo this is some lore that I actually don’t know about!!
