When Kenny Ortega was auditioning for these characters, he just didn't want actors who ad libs the songs or pretend to play the instruments. He was also auditioning for an actual band so if he wanted to they can actually go on tour with these songs that's on the soundtrack. So these actors can really play their instruments and they can really sing. Jeremy who plays Reggie(the black hair one) has his own band in real life too. Madison who plays Julie and Charlie who plays Luke wrote the song, "Perfect Harmony" together and played it for Kenny. He was so impressed not only did he add it to the soundtrack, but to the movie as well with them singing it to each other. Jacob, you should really sit and bing watch Julie and the Phantoms, then you would understand the songs and why it's relevant to the characters. You won't be disappointed.
The reason it has a “live” feel to it is because they are actually playing live. They have a recording for stage rehearsals but when filming it’s live!
The whole soundtrack is great but you should definitely react to Perfect Harmony (which was written by Madison and Charlie who play Julie and Luke), Stand Tall, Now or Never, and Unsaid Emily (with the clips).
The show has deep themes for a kids show. It is about grief and regret. It also explores losing a parent or a child. It also explores overcoming grief.
I know I'm super late, but this is what kills me about the supposed reason of why they ended the show. Supposedly, the show was made for kids but adults ended up watching it more than kids. Since it didn't reach it's intended demographic the way they wanted they ended it. However, the themes of this show are really heavy, they're just wrapped up in a fun way ig you could say. But no matter how you package it it's still about death and grief and that's a lot for younger kids. We're they really surprised that older teens/YA and older adults were the ones who connected with it more?
I am 45 years old and I am completely obsessed with this show. I don't even have kids to blame it on. Ha ha, the soundtrack is amazing. It and the soundtrack to Hamilton are on repeat while I work. Don't judge me 🤪

There's actually a lot to say about this show and this scene specifically as well. I'll start with the show though. It's about a teenage girl, Julie, who can't bring herself to play music after tragically losing her mother. She discovers a band of ghosts who died in the mid nineties right before their claim to fame and they help bring music back into her life. Along the way, they find that the ghosts, only visible to Julie when not playing music, can be seen by everyone when they perform with her. So they decide to form a band together. The show seems quite childish at first but it actually explores a multitude of themes including grief, found family, romance, and loss. I highly recommend you check it out. This scene is one of the fans' favorites. Charlie Gillespie (who plays Luke, the main guitarist and the guy in the beanie) actually came up with the idea for the grand piano to be in the performance, before it was just going to be a keyboard. He also added the guitar solo in. I don't want to give too much away because of spoilers but this scene makes a lot more sense in the context of the rest of the episode.
you should definitely listen to perfect harmony from julie and the phantoms!! the harmonies are so good in it ( hence the song name ). madison and charlie ( julie and luke ) who sing it wrote the song too!

I might be wrong, but I believe they played all the songs live during shooting (as opposed to pretending to play over a recording) which is what’s giving it that raw, authentic feel. I thought I saw that in an interview but I may be mistaken. Either way, the cast is incredibly talented, especially for being so young (especially Madison Reyes, who is literally brand new to the industry). I hope you continue to react to more from the show, I think you’ll really enjoy the other songs as well.
One of the cool things they did with the show was have the cast actually perform the songs during filming rather than acting along to a recording. The audio used is still from the studio, I believe, but it adds a great energy to the performances.

The music is all great - there’s a few different kinds of numbers...some 20s infused showtunes, a pop punk song, bubblegum pop, a HSM-esque number, etc. I’d recommend doing Now Or Never (the first song from the show, it’s the boys performing back in the 90s with their other band member who survived) and Finally Free.
