This movie is a meditation. It's that feeling when you somehow come across someone you are so in tune with that it goes beyond romance to something that you can't even put into words. And the fact that they are, in every way, out of space and time (given the jet lag) serves to bring them together more fully. It's a masterpiece.
I saw this in a tiny theater by my house. had never heard anything about it before, but was so blown away by the time it was over. I was thinking about it for weeks

Just finished watching On The Rocks.. and I had high hopes going into it, but SC’s Lost in T overshadowed the entire film. Produce something like Lost in T so early in a career, I couldn’t imagine the stress of trying to top it.
Yes, exactly. Characterizing their relationship as simply a romance doesn’t accurately describe what they had together. They are kindred spirits and gave each other exactly what the other needed at this specific point in both of their lives.
This movie is a mood
This is one of my top 3 movies I have ever seen, meditation is exactly what it is. Also reminds me of when I used to live in Tokyo without knowing the language or a single person, this movie takes me back

You can find this quietness in the back streets of Tokyo. It’s surprising and beautiful.
Highly recommend checking out “Tokyo Story.” It has that same, melancholic quietness to it and the emotional weight of it all really sneaks up on you, similar to this movie.

It's amazing how a random encounter between two strangers can have such a strong effect on each others lives during such a short period together. The writing is top notch, and Bill and Scarlett have such great chemistry. Plus the ending with Bill in the cab while The Jesus and Mary chain play is just perfection. I am such a fan of this film.
I think back over the years, to women I’ve known for 2-3 days at most they are all special in some way. Only a small few are memorable to the point of remembering every second, every touch etc... those people don’t come along often enough
This movie changed my life. I was lonely and bored and didn't know what to do with my life. Then saw this movie.
Bought a book about travelling soon after, and eventually I travelled parts of the world.
I visited some of the filming locations from this movie as a remembrance, or a tribute of some sorts, for how my adventures started
I just never thought of travelling, until I watched this movie.
One of the best, most beautiful, and most gracious movies ever made. The humanity is so rich.

It’s a great “slice of life” type movie that is not focused on a plot as it more focused on the characters and creating a certain atmosphere that sticks with you after the movie is over.
A few other movies like this I would recommend off the top of my head would be The Florida Project (2017), Call Me By Your Name (2017), Buffalo ‘66 (1998), and “The Sunset Trilogy” by Richard Linklater (Before Sunset is the best imo but you need to see all three in chronological order for context)
This is one of those movies I can watch a thousand times and I'll still be enchanted throughout.
A great movie that closed out an era. This came out right as cell phones and texting were becoming more common place, and three years before the first iphone brought the massive connectivity that we currently live in. Things seemed more romantic back then, and an encounter like the one between Bob and Charlotte was all the more special, because it was fleeting, and the possibility of never seeing someone again due to technology and contact restraints was a real thing.

it's difficult I think. Sean Penn won that year for Mystic River and he was phenomenal. There is a particular scene in that movie where is is asking about his daughter, and I think that scene alone trumps everything Bill Murray did in Lost in Translation. But that's just me. I don't think this is an easy choice.
@@Ninaofthe90s I like Mystic River, but no way Sean Penn should have won. Sean Penn played a typical douchebag, while Bill Murray had an amazing character arc, it's not even close lmao.
I have a funny story about Murray. Someone meet him at a place here in Norway. We do not know why was here in the country.. The girl who he met, and talked to him was going to a party, and invited him to a random student-party in a small appartment just for fun, thinking he whould say no. And he said yes..!! He hanged out with the people, he did the dishes, and left... Everyone said he was so normal and so cool... Just a random dude.. It was so funny.. :D

This was just 3-4 yrs ago.. Yeah, he did the dishes before he left, said thank you for the fun and left.. He talked to everybody there.. He was just a normal person..
He was once given a ticken for drunk driving a golf cart through downtown of my city (Stockholm). He said in an interview he still get letters in swedish from the police telling him to pay that fine lol.
I work at the front desk of a private club in Manhattan. One time Bill Murray walked in with some college aged girl and said "I think I'm a member here" (He isn't). But it's Bill Murray so I said, sure and took his coat and walked him to the bar. Bill had on one of those walking boots on his foot like he had a broken foot.
We got to the bar and I squared things away with the bartender and said "you're all set" and turned to walk away and Bill said to me "hey, whats your name?" I told him my name and he put out his hand and said "I'm Bill". I shook it and said nice to meet you.
He drank for about an hour with the college girl who by their conversation sounded like he met her earlier that evening. He tipped $50 to the coat check and left.
Another similar story:
Ricky Gervais once came into this same club and did the same thing. Except he was alone and it was during the day time on a Sunday. While I recognized him I couldn't remember his name at the time and I said "sorry we're closed". Which we were.
It was funny because he came in really fast with this big cheeky smile and said "I think I'm a member here" and a look on his face like 'Please recognize me!' This was before he hosted the golden globes so he wasn't as famous at the time.
This was a lot of people's favorite movie for a very long time. It was also Johannson's first 'grownup' role.
You should react to “Her”! It was written and directed by Spike Jonze who is Sofia Coppola’s ex husband. Both films are based on their experiences. Charlotte is supposed to be Sofia and her husband is Spike. And in “Her” Theodore Twombly (the protagonist played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix) is Spike and Sofia is is Katherine (played by Rooney Mara). Anyhow both are beautiful meditations on the human condition.
That movie has strong Eternal Sunshine vibes. Love it.
It never registered for me how much Charlotte’s husband resembles early 2000s spike Jonze! When he tells the girl they run into he’s there “shooting a band” it all clicked for me 😂 can’t believe it never occurred to me before

This film blew me away when I first saw it. I'd never seen a film that felt like this. That feeling comes back every time I see. Love it.
Genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time. It makes me feel weirdly nostalgic. I feel like in this case Tokyo isn't just the main setting, it's another main character.
Also: when you finish the "Tarantino" series, it'd be so amazing if you checked out Wes Anderson's movies. Don't know how familiar you are with his work, but knowing what i know about you, i bet you'd love 'em. :) Probably my second favorite director, right after Tarantino.
He has actually done a reaction to Life Aquatic but I'd love to see him watch his other works as well, especially Royal Tenenbaums!

Yes, This one reminds me of a 70s movie with a similar feel. US Title is "The Public Eye", UK title is "Follow Me!". Amazing amazing score by John Barry. This one has Mia Farrow as a newly married American in England to a proper English man, played by Michael Jayston. Topol rounds out the cast perfectly. The magic of this quirky film is that a majority of the film takes place in outdoor settings, moving thru 1970s London and Piccadilly area. Like Tokyo, it's like another character in the movie. She was a little lost in a new marriage. This movie almost seems like a lose adaptation.

This was one of the movies that my (future) wife and I bonded over. We both loved this movie and her (then) boyfriend hated it. We've now been together for 17 years.

The "Does it get easier" scene is possibly my favourite dialogue ever. It's also included in a track called Rock + Roll by Eden (coincidentally a beautiful song).

Absolutely fantastic movie. The depth of bittersweet emotion oozing out out of every frame is just amazing. This is so real, two people who feel lonely, detached from the world around them (not just in Tokio) who suddenly realise it's not just something wrong with them and there's actually at least one other person who feels that way...
Also great fun watching you as it starts to sink in what you just watched.
the history between Sofia Coppola & Spike Jonze plays a huge part in both of their movies.
This movie was written by Sofia after their divorce.
Spike Jonze ended up writing Her.
As a double feature it's a very unique look into their relationship indirectly through film.
and Scarlett is in both of them.
Yeah, Her is kinda required at this point.

They say that Anna Faris’s character in this is based on Cameron Diaz, from when they were doing press for Being John Malkovich.

This movie says so much. It's beautiful and serene. Bill & Scarlett make an unlikely pairing makes so much sense.
Both characters feel like they've lost grasp of some part of their lives. Scarlett is just entering this phase & Bill Murray's character is just coming out the other end.

One of those brief relationships that happen just when you need it, and they don't have to be sexual - humans desire companionship much more than they do sex.
I absolutely adore this film. It holds a special place for me. Sofia Coppola is truly a fantastic director and Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are really perfect in their roles. Just a wonderfully written and directed film that really encapsulates loneliness, existential ennui, and making a fleeting connection with a kindred spirit in the midst of all of the isolation that manages to help two people that are going through their own life and relationship troubles.
I love this movie. It’s one those films where you home to after a long rainy day from work, kick your shoes off, turn off the lights and watch in your warm bed.
You should watch the Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight). One of the best romance movies of all time (and one of the best trilogies of all time)

I know it's not everyone's favorite but I really like Marie Antoinette as well. I love the portrayal of decadence in that movie. I honestly just like Sofia Coppola's style, I don't know why. She has the same type of "mood" in all her films that I really dig.
I don't think anyone has done a reaction video to Virgin Suicides. That movie sends you into a loop. I felt so many emotions that I didn't know how to process afterwords, it was sad and intriguing all at once.
Such a beautiful film. I went through a lot of emotions watching this, as I remember where I was at the times I watched this movie.
Man you reminded me how much I love this movie. The music and the images are forever saved in my mind in a folder that says "Never forget". My heart rate went up just watching you watching the movie :).

I love this movie. It's crazy to think that Scarlet J was only 18 when she filmed this. Have you seen Ghost World yet? That was released couple of years before this and it was, iirc, her first big role. That's a great movie.

I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it in theaters when I was still in college... and one of the things that always bugged me was not knowing what Bob whispers to Charlotte at the end... however mature me now appreciates that the words don't matter as much as witnessing the feelings they both have in their final goodbyes... but apparently the director finally confirmed that Bill actually ad libbed the lines as this:
“I have to be leaving, but I won’t let that come between us. Okay?”

I recommend Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers, very underrated movie with a subtle but amazing performance from Bill Murray.
There is an existential feel to both Lost in Translation and Broken Flowers. Both are beautifully done!
the squarepusher track that plays when Scarlett is sitting & looking out the window of her hotel room is a highlight.
That scene with the view on Tokyo and the beautiful track is indeed magical.
Chemical Brothers - The state we're in is my highlight, Air - Alone in Kyoto too. Coppola has great taste.

Probably my favorite rom-com of all time. I used to live in Tokyo around the time this was filmed, so watching it always makes me feel nostalgic. Really glad to see you react to it 🙌
The perfect 'romcom' for men of a certain age.
We can relate to Bill Murray because we think we're witty and charming, and we fall in love with Scarlett Johansson because she's Scarlett Johansson.
A symbolic "partner" piece to this movie would be 2013's 'Her' Spike Jonze. It has a similar tone and themes in that they both exude a weighted stillness, muted beauty, and emphasis on melancholy, detachment, existentialism and alienation, with a focus on the difficulties and solutions found in human connection and love. What is also important (potentially) to note is that Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola were both married in the early 2000s (Giovanni Ribisi's character John the Photographer/Charlotte's boyfriend is inspired partially by Spike Jonze and Coppola's experiences with him). Another link is that both movies star Scarlett Johansson as a leading role). These two movies I've always thought of as unintentional (or rather subconscious) companion pieces which seem to encapsulate the worries, atmosphere, and zeitgeist of the 00s.
Probably my favorite love story. Impacted me a lot when I first saw it when it came out. Ended up going to Japan a few years after by happenstance. I felt a lot there because of this film. Extremely impactful. Being there. And it still is extremely impactful for me and my life. Love you reacted to this amazing film. Loved it.
I saw this movie for the first time back in 2004, I was in the middle of an extremely tough (for me anyway) breakup, and it was such a low point mentally for me. And this movie hit me like a ton of bricks, it just resonated with me on some fucking level, I don't really know how and why, but ever since then, I can never watch this film without crying every other scene.

Great Choice for a reaction. One of the best films in the last couple decades. It really takes it's time, allowing the story and relationship to unfold naturally. With unresolved ambiguity and emotional chaos, and everyday temptation, like in real life. And funny as hell too.
Lost In Translation and especially Duets were two films from early 2000 to feature karaoke which was becoming a stateside attraction at bars and lounges and soon to the average Americans' home market to sing to their hearts’ contents.

BRO, YES - EDEN is one of my favorite artists too and this movie was one that inspired him a lot (he uses the dialogue you mentioned in "Rock + Roll"). He uses movie dialogue in a good few of his songs!

In Whisky culture, the 'Make it Suntory time' scene is hugely iconic.
I think this film has a much bigger effect on those of us who are introverted, and prone to loneliness… I was in my early 20’s when this came out. I don’t remember why, but I went and saw the movie by myself, and I was dumbfounded and completely in love with the film. I actually had to see it again, and I went back the next day… when the DVD came out I bought it and watched dozens of times… I bought the soundtrack… I listened to the director’s commentary…. I studied the montages and how the music was used… the editing, everything. It’s the kind of film that has to be written and directed by the same person, a very personal and deliberate focus, a labor of love. I cheered when Sofia Coppola won the Oscar for best original screenplay that year. There are few things more artistically impressive then the simple title card at the end of a great film that reads, “written and directed by….” Like at the end of tarantino’s “inglorious basterds” when brad Pitt says’ “…this might just be my masterpiece”…. Cut to black, “written and directed by Quentin Tarantino”. This film ends in an equally epic way… I know you had to cut the song out of the very last scene, but that song works so well at that moment. Perfection.
At 14:03 you say you like the writing and dialogue because it feels natural and not flashy. I agree. I love films like this, but this is always going to be the best one of the “Doomed Romance” films where two strangers meet and due to their circumstances they can’t be together. I’ll use “Before We Go” (2014) as an example. It’s a rip off of “Before Sunrise” and this film. However, the dialogue seems forced and the situations they get in seem unrealistic. So it takes you out of the mood. And the mood is the point of the film. I want to feel as if I could be one of the lead characters, as if it could happen to me.
In 1984 Murray played a character that went on a spiritual search in the remake of "The Razor's Edge". It was a dramatic role, a real change-up for him. The original from 1946 starred Tyrone Power and the gorgeous Gene Tierney.

The latter half of this film is so bittersweet to me. Goodbyes are so hard and there's nothing lonelier than letting go of someone who made you feel like you matter in such a big place. Even if there's a small hope you'll see each other again, idk. The small but tender moments they share after karaoke, so nice.

One of my favourite movies ever. Just something so comforting and genteel about it, where you totally immersed into it. Watch it at least once a year. Sharp dialogue with moments of comedy delivered by Bill.

I absolutely love, "Alone in Kyoto."
This is one of the few movies that I like more and more with every viewing.
I also love Marie Antoinette, which is directed by Sofia Coppola and stars Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. It’s gorgeous and fun how it has modern music in it.
I mean this 100% when I say this, you are the best reaction channel on TH-cam. You’re so genuine with your thoughts when watching, and you just seem like a nice chill guy.
If you like the dialogue in this movie, I recommend Spike Jonze’s Her and Michel Cimino’s The Deer Hunter. The dialogue in the first half of TDH is natural in the same vein as this movie, and it’s just a phenomenal film. Highly recommend.

One of my favorites. Both characters changed. Both were lost at the beginning and in the end probably more able to be happy in their "old" live. He was trapped in a routine and she was without direction (basically just following her husband). Both will appreciate the little things more. Bob hopefully will make it work with his wife and Charlotte will find something for herself to know who she is. It is a very quite movie but it seems to be a turning point for the characters. All that without much drama, with great dialogue, with great cinematography.

I think that its important to remember in the beginning of the movie they understood nothing about their lives, on the surface. When they met, they didn't understand each other at all either, but by the end of the movie, they don't want to understand anything... except each other, and simply BE with each other. As apathetic human beings, not necessarily as romantic partners. Two souls merging and being with each other through sympathy and love = understanding.
I was 48 when an 18 year old hit on me. I won't even try to explain the relationship but it was 3 years neither of us regretted.
Interestingly when I was 20 I dated a woman who was 33 for 8 years. We met in Germany when I was in the army. Left to my own devices I have no doubt I would have mostly stayed on base and drank, but she was an adventurer and we travelled, and travelled and travelled. I ended up going to the great museums, seeing the iconic historic sights. She encouraged me to get what was called a eurrail pass and I backpacked across Europe riding trains and ferry's. She taught me just how smart I was. She took a dumb country boy and made him a much more knowledgeable man of the world....
Its probably an arrangement that would be beneficial to many if not most.

@@ALeaud well, we did have a "may to September" romance as they say for a couple of years. Neither have any regrets, but she had a life yet to live and I was ready to settle in our small town, so I encouraged her to not be held back. She moved to the city,went to school and is doing well. She credits me for breaking her from the small town, backwards country mentality that surrounded her life. She really did develop from a greasy headed flannel wearing Appalachian girl to a a beautiful young woman with much more confidence... She made me feel alive again and get the opportunity to be young again for a couple of years... Many would and will look down, but neither of us have any regrets,and that's all that matters

I heard this story was inspired by Sofia Coppola's life when she was working in Japan as a photographer. When Harrison Ford was in Japan doing commercials, Sofia would hang out with him. She knew him because her father had known Harrison from working with George Lucas. Both had significant others. Sofia was going out with Spike Jonze at the time, who directed Being John Malkovich and Her. Anna Farris's character was based on Cameron Diaz, who visited Japan to do press for one of her movies. Anna Farris admitted it was based on her in a Japanese interview. translated into Japanese. But it spread beyond the Japan and when Cameron Diaz heard about it, she was angry at Anna Farris and Sofia Coppola. Cameron has forgiven Anna Farris since then, but not Sofia Coppola.
