To rub salt into the wound, the portrait of Lu Ten is based on Mako at a younger age and the inscription translates, "General Iroh, I will see you again when victory is obtained. Your loyal son, Lu Ten." It is speculated that this was the last correspondence between Iroh and his son before Lu Ten's death in the Siege of Ba Sing Se.
Sad fact: in iroh's episode he first helps a flower bloom (often associated to the birth of life), then he helps a toddler, then kids/pre-teens, then a grown man the age his son would be. Iroh is truly the best character, so well written.
Iroh helps a flower bloom, calms a toddler, advises some children, and helps a young adult through a rough patch. Symbolically, that is four stages of fatherhood.
Don't hold back your tears. It is your genuine emotions that make reactions such a great way to re-experience a show as a viewer. Thats what makes a reaction channel good. Raw unfiltered emotions. I know it is hard to be that vulnerable in front of a camera for the world to see, but it will resonate with the right people.
Don't worry Cara, you're not the only person to have that intrusive thought. Azula's voice actor once joked about a Zuko-Azula forbidden romance during a fan event Q&A. The best part is Zuko's VA was there as well and was super awkward... kinda like Zuko when presented with romance in the show. lol You're also definitely not the only person to cry during Appa's Lost Days. It is ROUGH.
Cara's intrusive thought about Zuko and Azula was so out of nowhere but soooo funny xdddddd and how Prez reacted xddd she doesn't have to apologize for that. made the reaction even better imo xd
I so relate to you guys! I lost our family member "Solo" after 17 years, and the pain was undescribable. Its one week from 2 years now and I still think about him. This episode was something else. I watched you react to this series, with I guess your friend, and will be watching you react again with your girl. Great job!
Loved the reaction guys, especially getting to see your pup, he’s beautiful! Saw him when you first got him, but was wondering how he was doing, and what a handsome boy! I have a white Crested Cocker, which is half Chinese Crested and half Cocker Spaniel, and he looks like a white version of your boy. Even his eyes, and the way he cuddles with you, my buddy does that too. Can’t wait for the end of season 2 :)
Iroh’s tale tears out my heart every time. He spends his day helping guys from a baby to young children to a young man, echoing the stages of life his son got to experience before he died fighting under his father’s command at the siege on Ba Sing Se. And then you have the most tragic sound imaginable imo, an old person crying over someone they should’ve died before. It’s just the perfectly sad short story. 😢 And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you get Sokka wandering into a haiku battle and he only gets kicked out when he messes up the structure. Short stories written by different members of the team was such an interesting idea to drop right in the middle of the series.
The dream in Appa's lost days always hits me soo hard, it's way deeper than it looks on the surface and here's why. First off we have the relationship between an air nomad and his/her bison. As it says in the dream; "A sky bison is a companion for life". Meaning that the moment you choose your bison (well really it chooses you), a deep spiritual bond is created. Then secondly we have the fact that Appa is Aang's avatar animal guide like mentioned in book 1 in the solstice episodes. The bond between Aang and Appa is that much deeper because of these two factor's and thus they are so deeply connected that even when physically separated they are still linked to the point where they are interacting in the same dream at the same time, despite not being together physically. A deep spiritual and emotional bond that always moves me to tears.
Now can you imagine being a child watching this show as it aired, bring DEVASTATED when Appa was stolen, then having to wait A MONTH to find out where Appa is.. only to have to watch Appa's lost days!! It was pure torture as a kid!! It deserved the award for accurately depicting animal abuse. This show is a masterclass in explaining terrible, dark things to children in a sincere but not traumatizing way.
Strictly, haiku are supposed to contain a 'kigo" reference to seasons and a 'kireji' ("cutting word") otherwise it's just a "senryu". Sokka could've been thrown out much earlier.
Leaves from the vines, falling so slow. Like fragile, tiny shells drifting in the foam. Little soldier boys comes marching home. Brave soldier boys comes marching home. 😭
“So what do you like to do for fun?” “Nothing.” One of my absolute favorite interactions in the show. The self-awareness of emo Zuko is hilarious every single time.
Also, obligatory " 'Appa's Lost Days' " won a Genesis Award from the Humane Society for its depiction of animal cruelty and abuse, especially in circuses" comment.
Tales of ba sing se actually does contribute to the plot. Each persons featured tale has alot to do with character building and forest of some things to come
Did anyone ever mention the story of the little in the Aang story line? At the very end, there's this little kid who's shouting at her cat cuz she got into the pen of one of the animals... if you notice, the little girl has a head scarf, that's cuz she modeled after a cancer patient who wanted to be part of the ATLA universe. The creators even gave her a preview of future avatar episodes before the girl's passing. I don't think the creators said anything until they did some DVD commentary on the episode.
This is exactly the same circus that Ty Lee was performing in. Same ringmaster. Same circus, with all the dangerous animals that Azula had them release.
I could be mistaken but the voice actor for Toph said Mako did the recording for Irohs episode while he was either in hospital or dying and him singing was one of the last things he did. Pain
You know the writing is great when some of the best episodes have little or none of the main character in them. I could follow Iroh around all day. And, MoMo probably has an adventure daily. We need a full MoMo episode.
There is a movie called Sidekicks, it is essentially a Karate Kid copy movie from the early 90s with Jonathon Brandis and Chuck Norris, Mako plays Mr. Lee (Mentor ala Mr Miyagi) and does a early version of Iroh. I'm under no illusions the movie is any good, likely on par with the first 3 Ninjas movie, but it was a staple of my childhood and was in constant rotation with other "Karate" movies my brother and I watched. I'd love to see someone react to it.
I don't have a pet. The only pet I ever had was a fish tank, which hardly counts. Because of that, Appa's Lost Days is just another episode to me, mostly finding myself skipping it because of its limited dialogue and the fact it doesn't drive the plot forward - one of those episodes you realistically only need to watch once. But hey, still seen it multiple times through countless reactions.
6:45 another sad fact is that this scene was recorded when he was at the hospital, his voice breaking and him crying? All legit, he had cancer (don't remember which)
37:07 I think alot of tables were flipped when people first saw this episode 😢 at the very least, a few tv remotes were thrown through a wall or two. Trust me, we understand completely
I used to have a pet. Yet i cried A Lot over Appa's journey long before i had a pet. But actually.. It always fascinates me how people (usually those who have no children, or simply young, or just old sociopaths sometimes) barely shade a tear watching someone's child dieing or someone being tortu.ed, but cry a literal river under the suffering of an animal. (I was kinda there. Small kids pissed me off more than anything. Amazing how one can change.) Not that i meant that animals don't suffer or don't deserve any compassion - they do. And i cry for them, too. What i mean is.. shouldn't we have a little more compassion to our own kind, too? We are, too, suffering animals in the end of the day.. And if people care that much for the dogs and cats and flying bisons - shouldn't they, say, stop eating meat then, maybe? Aang is a vegetarian because he actually cares. Just thoughts.
I felt bad for Zuko because he wanted to be in love with her but he was basically lying to her because he's from the fire nation and that sucks. Didn't want to lie to her and that's the best way in his mind to protect her. I felt that and it hurts
Cara is on top something tho, the meme checks out, annoying little sister, big bro hates her guts, let's not get into spoilers tho, but the meme almost entirely checks out. Probably should check out oreimo, although i don't really think that's a great idea.
The lost days episode got an award from the Humane Society for displaying how animals are treated. This is what happens in circuses and this is what meat eaters do to animals. Be kind, be vegan
I didnt even realise at the time but when iroh was with the kids when the window got broken, greg baldwin, the actor who took over when mako, his original voice actor, passed away, did the lines of dialogue in that scene. Then it changed back to mako for the rest of the episode. And iroh crying was actually makos emotions when he found out he was dying, he gave us one of his best through his own pain 😢 RIP Mako Iwamatsu 😔
This is not true. He didn't record this right after learning he was dying. That's an internet myth. Why do people feel the need to repeat lies? It's sad enough that he died. Just stop inventing stuff.
I dont watch this appa episode cause for me is also hard to watch n i dont like it, i have a shihtzu n looks a lot like appa so this is the only episode that id never watch it again
i don't have pet (sadly), but for me ep 16 is still the saddest episode in the show. when I watched it for the first time as a kid it definitely broke me though lol, the first few rewatches I actually skipped it.
Nahhh guys the Appa episode had no right to destroy us that badly😭 side note we’re about to start Book 3! The hype is REAL www.patreon.com/CaraPrez
Tales of Ba Sing Se AND Appa's Lost Days?! That's like double the emotional damage! 😂
WORST PLANNING EVER💀

I never noticed this that is outstanding
I really love that Cara is doing the Azula hairstyle every episode, so iconic.
*prior to the heartbreaking scene*
Cara: "It's so sad because he lost his son..."
Prez: *Biggest grin ever*
Mako's understudy refuses to sing "Leaves from the Vine" because as he once explained "That's Mako's song. It belongs to no one else."
Appa’s lost days won an award for showcasing animal cruelty in such a realistic way. Idk if that was mentioned but it’s dope!
Iroh helps a flower bloom, calms a toddler, advises some children, and helps a young adult through a rough patch. Symbolically, that is four stages of fatherhood.
Appa episode hits me every time. I was crying with you Cara 😭
Funnily enough, Momo can’t understand human, but Appa can, and Appa and Momo understand each other.
Ok Cara, let's discuss your intrusive thought there for a moment! XD
💀😂
Lmao that was so funny 😂
It’s impossible to watch Appa’s lost day without crying. I understand u Cara. 💔 That’s heartbreaking
ok but the way Sora was looking at Cara with his head back 😭 bless him
“Nervously laughing and crying”😭😂 this episode brought out ALL emotions that’s for sure! The animal love is just too real

**watches an entire episode of Appa suffering** 😭😭😭
Awfully brave of you two to conquer both iconic episodes 15&16 in a single sitting. 😭😭😭😭
Cara's intrusive thought about Zuko and Azula was so out of nowhere but soooo funny xdddddd and how Prez reacted xddd
she doesn't have to apologize for that. made the reaction even better imo xd
Cara watching this episode 😭 me watching her react 🤣👌
Everyone one gangster until iroh sings leaves from the Vine
🥲
Irish’s son Lu Ten probably died not far from that very tree during the siege of Ba Sing Se.
I so relate to you guys! I lost our family member "Solo" after 17 years, and the pain was undescribable. Its one week from 2 years now and I still think about him. This episode was something else. Sorry to hear that, can’t imagine the pain💔
People live on in our memories. I'm so sorry you lost someone dear to you, remembering them every year honors their existence.
When i showed the Appa ep to my sister, i left to get something and when i came back mid episode, my younger sister was BAWLING
Loved the reaction guys, especially getting to see your pup, he’s beautiful! Saw him when you first got him, but was wondering how he was doing, and what a handsome boy! Yep our little boy has grown up! Bit wow can’t even imagine Sora all white😂

I freaking love you two, you’re adorable.
Iroh crying while singing is the voice actor mako actually breaking down crying cause he was on his desth bed
Cara’s intrusive thought moment made me laugh so hard 😂
The dream in Appa's lost days always hits me soo hard, it's way deeper than it looks on the surface and here's why.

14:48 that wincest moment came outta nowhere
The truly sad part was the first voice actor for Iroh was singing that song about himself because he was dying of cancer.
Dude I already broke why are you doing this to me haha
@Kevc00 sorry lol but it truly is a beautiful scene
I read somewhere that the drawing of Iroh's son is actually a drawing of Iroh's voice actor himself when he was younger
Now can you imagine being a child watching this show as it aired, bring DEVASTATED when Appa was stolen, then having to wait A MONTH to find out where Appa is.. only to have to watch Appa's lost days!! You are having a VERY appropriate reaction to animal abuse ❤
That episode was too painful

Reminds me of a video of a particular cast panel that I saw a while ago.

Cara you absolutely win best reaction ever to episode 16!!
My head canon is that Irohs son died at the siege of Basingse, he died on that hill n that’s y he went there for his anniversary picnic
Tales of ba sing se actually does contribute to the plot. Each persons featured tale has alot to do with character building and forest of some things to come
the name of Iroh's son was Lu Ten.
I think you are confusing him with Mako from Legend of Korra.
Mako was Hiro's voice actor. He was dying from cancer while recording it.
@@TheAyme83you mean Iroh? Yeah but they said that Iroh's son was also named Mako, which is wrong
They prpbably confused the fact that Lu Ten's portrait was based on Mako (VA) and that Mako (LoK) was named after him
Immediately calling out that Sokka’s story will involve women is so fucking funny.
Did anyone ever mention the story of the little in the Aang story line? The episode where Iroh teaches us all the ancient and sacred art of tearbending. A true classic!
Momo and Appa both don't speak but they have a brilliant voice actor :)
"Am I alone crying here?" No... No your not
I could be mistaken but the voice actor for Toph said Mako did the recording for Irohs episode while he was either in hospital or dying and him singing was one of the last things he did. Pain
