Bleach is the only anime that EVERY character could have their own show. From the designs, to their outfits, Zanpaktos, Bankais, to these incredibly laid out backstories, Kubo is a genius.

Shunsui's experience with such tragedy would certainly help shape his views. His also acting as Nanao's moral anchor and allowing her in turn to do the same shows their dynamic. His widespread reform of Soul Society is his ultimate contribution in peace, something tells me he has quite the amount of dirt on the old hardliners and nobles in case they emerge to challenge these changes. And he'd use it just as he he'd go all out in battle.
This is why Kyoraku is in my top 5 characters. His character's layers reach to this day.
He fulfills the stereotype of a secretly powerful dude that's always laid-back but he's so much more.
He feels like someone who actually takes care of things in the background and by any chance would want to avoid conflict.
Yamamoto made the right choice with him.
Same for me but after he became head captain and we learned his backstory he became my #1 favorite character. What's your top 5? Mine is Shunsui, Grimmjow, Aizen, Kenny and Urahara.

Proud fangirl/waifu of Shunsui since 2007. I remember in my early years I’ve always wanted to know about his family and what his Bankai was like. I distinctly recall reading his backstory in the manga in 2015 and shed some tears. I hadn’t realized at the time how much sadness this man had been actively suppressing underneath the signature smiles and laughs. I also had lost a sibling tragically, and funny enough said sibling was really into Ukitake. Here’s hoping that the anime will really expound upon Shunsui’s backstory (manga was too brief imo) I’d love to at least know his brother’s name. I also hadn’t realized in 2015 about the old couple taking in Nanao. Shunsui’s parents??? Now I definitely need to know more 😂❤
Nope Shunsui's parents are long dead. The old couple belong to the Ise clan.
Actually they’re not dead, according to bleach wiki page…and the two shown in flashback are definitely his parents! Look at the old man…he looks like a lot Shunsui!
When I first watched Bleach and I saw Kyoraku for the first time, I knew he'd be an absolute legend.

One might even say, Ukitake also gave something important to Kyoraku. Ukitake's Captain's Robe, then he died. However like Nanao's sword, Kyoraku was able to pass on the robe to Rukia.
Shunsui inherited the Gotei 13 from head captain Yamamoto after his death, and inherited Ukitake’s Shihakusho to give to Rukia before his death. Not to mention all the others he had to take on from this video. The man is a pillar of strength mentally, emotionally and physically.
Shunsui has been one of my favorite characters since his "fight" with Chad... when we got our first true glimpse of who he was. You could tell from the start he was laid back very powerful and exceptionally intelligent. He started out my in my top 3 that early and after finishing the story he stayed in my top 5 with the likes of Ichigo Urahara Uryu and Ulquiorra
Indeed. Him also preventing Nanao from essentially executing Chad shows that he does not want her to have blood on her hands, especially in such a way. Yes it can be chalked up to wanting Chad questioned but given how frantically insistent he was that she stop immediately yeah, he spared her soul a splatter of darkness.

Correction: Shunsui actually isn't a thousand years old. He was pretty young in his flashback with Yamamoto, which was several years after the war was over- Shunsui didn't even know about the events of the war until much later. It's already been established that the war was almost exactly a thousand years ago, by which time he couldn't have been born, since he was completely in the dark about it.
But this is just nitpicking on a small tidbit in a wonderfully made video- thanks for this, DBZimran!
This is based on the time relative to when Yamamoto even started his school. It would be a wide range, because I doubt Yamamoto would start a school immediately right after the war, it took a lot of effort for him in the mental department. Thus we would have a blank period after the war and before Yamamoto's school which would be the right time for Shunsui to be born. It would be fair to say it took 100 years for Yamamoto to start his school lol.
Kyouraku is the prefrct example of the Qualified Leader.
And this is why he is my favorite character in Bleach. He's such a intricate character. I always appreciated he was willing to take the steps Yamamoto wouldn't, really helped him come out on top.

Shunsui didn't have nearly as much power as genryusai did, so he had to use cunning and his winning personality.
Genryusai didn't need to form alliances, he'd just incinerate anyone against him
Shunsui's character is inspired from Hikaru Genji from the Tale of Genji, a very prominent Japanese literature novel. That's why he fell in love with Nanao, his niece.
I mean there are too many similarities, both Shunsui and Hikaru Genji are well known as the second sons, filthy rich, dead parents, elder brother dies of an illness, are well known for womanizing, carefree, both loved their mother figure and kept on searching for women who look like her... Well that's the reason why Kubo made Shunsui have a liking towards women with Glasses Lisa and Nanao who look just like Shunsui's sister in-law.
And both and Shunsui & Genji became the head of the organisation later in their life.
Even Shunsui's zanpaktou Katen looks like a courtesan because Genji had a very famous affair with a courtesan too. But most importantly he fell in love with his niece who looks very similar to his sister in law/mother figure, that's why Shunsui's romance with Nanao is hinted even though she's his niece.
Wow, that's really cool. I didn't know that, but their stories sound really similar. Personally I never saw him loving her romantically, I got more of a niece or adopted daughter vibe, even before we knew his backstory.
@@D00MTR33 Just Google, Ise Nanao 's Valentine omake Bleach. Illustrated by Kubo himself, and there are many other omakes which features them as a romantic interests. Besides Nanao falling for Shunsui is not surprising because Nanao never knew that he's her uncle.

Shunsui Kyouraku is 1 of the most funniest but interested Bleach characters and I agree how he feels for a beautiful ladies as a single bachelor 21 years old boy. He's assistant Nanao is 1 of the cutest Bleach female characters ever. In the final battle between of Aizen and Soul Society in the sky of Karakura town Kyouraku's fight between an Arrancar number 1 Coyote Starrk is my favourite battle in Bleach. And my favourite Zanpakuto spirit in Zanpakuto Arc are Kyouraku's beautiful and powerful ladies Koten Kyōkotsu. I really like Shunsui Kyouraku, he's funny, don't takes battles too seriously but he's 1 of oldest and strongest Captains in Gotei 13. And I like how Yamamoto likes Kyouraku and Ukitake the most like he's own sons. I'm so interested of hearing Kurouraku's backstory. 😊😮
Whaf makes Kyoraku an interesting character is despite his laid back nature, he becomes serious in a war. While many of his peers scorn him for using underhanded tactics to defeat his enemies, he would rather win by any means necessary in a war than to follow a code of honourable battles. Hence why he is the Head Captain of the 13 Court Guards.

Some of the high level quincies joining the shinigami to fight the Schutzstaffel mirrors the historical reality of the German regular army joining in certain efforts at the end of WW2 to fight against the real life Schutzstaffel, or SS.
After first finding out about this info a little over a year ago, I had a head cannon that the reason why Yamamoto allows Shunsui to wear such an "eccentric" outfit (compared to all the other captains) is that he knows they're all mementos given to Shunsui by various people throughout his life. After all, Old Man Yama was like a father to him & Ukitake so he likely gave them some leeway w/ certain things all cause of the circumstances those 2 had. This is mostly inferred (by me) from the fact that Yamamoto is a firm & extremely stubborn person even when it comes to small things like losing a captain's haori. And as Ywhach said, he went soft in his old age

I think shunsui is a stronger head captain than Yamamoto. The first head captain was the stronger soul reaper but while he would win the battle shunsui would win the war

Why do the most carefree characters have sad backstories. Besides Shunsui there's Rangiku.
Yeah, she has a tragic story too, but always acts cheerful and carefree. But there are moments when you can see just how much of a complex character she is.

I always thought his style had more to do with a prepared strategy for the "tag" game from his zanpakuto's shikai (strike a target for more damage, if you have more of that color yourself). His backstory adds SO much more depth to who he is and his values. Hands down one of my favorite characters in all of anime/manga.

Shunsui was already my favorite captain and one of my favorite characters, but after him becoming head captain and learning about his backstory, he became my favorite Bleach character. I figured there had to be a reason why he acted the way he did and learning about his tragic past made me understand. I enjoy complex characters (and crazy badd asses) that's why my 5 is Shunsui, Grimmjow, Aizen, Kenpachi and Urahara.

I just find it weird that the empty zanpakto could not become one. Does this mean the soul already was imprinted on another zanpakto, so it would no longer leak out? Or is it that the blank zanpakto refused to absorb the energy. I guess it could be a special case. Just want to know what pact this has on the rules set.

We don’t know whether Nanao is Kyoraku’s brothers child… it isn’t clearly stated. Neither Kyoraku’s age is indicated clearly, but it is clear he grew up in post Quincy War times.
We do know she's his brother's child. Who else could it be? Do you think her mom just went out and banged some random dude after her husband died?

I love Shunsui's zanpakto, but doesn't that mean only one of the blades is actually his since the smaller blade was hidden as the Ise clans divine blade when using his Shikai? And doesn't that mean Yamamoto was wrong when he said that Kyoraku and Ukitake were the only two shimigami with duel blades as zanpakto?
No, the second blade is his as well, and she's only hiding Nanao's sword. Katen gave birth to her and gave her some of her powers as well. Kyokotsu now has her own powers and she is the shikai sword, bringing children's games to life. Katen is his Bankai sword. If Kyokotsu wasn't his, she wouldn't look like that and have powers of the Ise sword, instead of the ones she has now. Also technically, Shunsui is the only one who has 2 swords, even in normal state, while Ukitakes split up into two only in shikai (we don't know his Bankai unfortunately).
