Bought the Trio+ and it’s the best money I’ve spent on gear. Makes playing at home just so much more fun. My wife calls it my “Billy no mates pedal”. Harsh but true.
When, like all of us, after many, many hours of sore fingertips and aching hands I finally graduated from the first throes of learning to play guitar, began to improve and learn more "things", I stared to listen again to the great guitar players, that tiny percentage at the edge the bell curve, but with new ears. Of course they were astounding and now that I knew a few (very few)" things" I began to understand for the first time just how astounding they really were. I began to imagine that given sufficient inspiration, practice, dedication and experience that even I might be able to approach, even from a far distance, their genius. So, I progressed and got lots of experience, live and in the recording studio, made a few decent records, played on a lot of better ones and steadily improved, accordingly. As time passed I began to realise that, like in everything, no matter what you think you have accomplished and learned, there will always be those who are so clearly ahead of you that you wonder what the point of doing it was at all. No matter how much you try, you just don't seem to be able to catch up. After some frustrating years, a light came on in my stupid head, and a voice in the light said, "You've got it wrong, this thing, this music and this guitar playing is not a competition with others, it's a competition within you, yourself. All you have to do is be as good as you can at any point; learn what you can and, most importantly, enjoy yourself. Forget about comparing yourself with others. No matter what you do, some others will always be 'better' than you and you will always be 'better' than some others. Making playing music into a competition will always lead to unhappiness, no matter who you are and how 'great' you may become, and moreover, it dishonours music itself. Most importantly, you'll miss the true joy of playing music which is what you set out to do in the first place." 'After that I relaxed and began to enjoy playing as I had when I first began, and without trying so hard, I actually got better at it. I stopped measuring and judging my playing and once again felt the keen satisfaction that playing guitar had once been and is supposed to be. Just passing this on to you for what it may be worth. I LOVE that you are pointing out the copyright issues... protecting the musicians is important... however, as far as I know, a chord progression cannot be copyrighted... so a chord progression is fine, a progression WITH melody is a song. That you can't just use openly.
guys, i think we can settle this using the n+1 formula. n = the number of pedals you currently own. e.g. if you have 11 pedals the correct number of pedals is 12, however once you have 12 the correct number is 13..... problem solved :)
Thomas McAteer alternatively, you could use the formula d-1 where d is the number of pedals which will cause a divorce . therefore n+1 = d-1 , therefore d = n + 2 , meaning if you buy pedals one at a time , you'll be fine !
Here to vouch for the Trio - I’ve been buying endless reams of guitar stuff since starting, what, 15 years ago? I have a number of guitars and pedals and apps etc, but since getting this for my birthday my playing has come on phenomenally. I’m not that great a guitarist and practise has always been me playing things I already know, or bits of. Now I sit down, get a chord progression, and then start pushing myself to improvise - something I’ve always shied away from because it was too hard. I mean I’ve a LONG way to go but this has dramatically changed things for me.
I also highly recommend Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music. - Very consistent with speeding up and slowing down, hard to hear if this changes the pitch at all! - You can raise or lower the pitch by an octave above or below (and even smaller fractions) - Set EQ levels to hear lower or higher notes more clearly - Set a portion of the song to loop continuously (for example, if you're learning a solo and don't want to take your hand off the guitar to press a button) - Has a feature to freeze a portion of the song and it plays one note/chord continuously (if you're really stuck!) - Most importantly, if you're doing a gig you can download the song's MP3 files and save a playlist of all the songs you need to learn! An absolute lifesaver! :)
This was mentioned below but it bears repeating. You can slow down TH-cam videos and the PITCH WON'T CHANGE - Brilliant!!! Hover your mouse over the bottom of the TH-cam video and when the task bar appears > click on 'Settings' > click 'Speed' > then select the speed you want - .75 - .5 - .25. It makes learning difficult passages so much easier. Plus it's great for comedic effect. Guthrie Govan speaking at half speed is hilarious - he sounds like drunk Guthrie. Lol.
On the Trio, you don't need to count yourself in, just set it to "listen" and it will not start until you start playing. When you are done teaching it your rhythm and progression, hit the switch and the backing track starts to play. It's a lot less stressful than trying to get a loop just right.
A Trio plus for sure. The trio doesn't have the looper and sequencer that the plus has. I've had it for a few months and it's great! Best "pedal" I've ever purchased!
I always think, what if this is the first video you watch of these guys and your at the start of your guitar journey. I mean, the amount of content, information, laughs ahead of you is just incredible. These guys smash it out of the park and are just superb! Im a videographer and the amount of work that goes into something like this is pretty challenging, doesn't get said enough, but hats of the the TPS team!
I've had the Trio+ about 12 months now and love it. Just brilliant for practice, like having your own band who dream up bass lines and beats to your wish as needed. One of the most fun and valuable tools I've bought which I hope to use live in an acoustic solo setting for some songs. I mostly lay down some chord progressions in various styles and then use it work on arpeggios, triads, scales and following/nailing chord tones. The best practice tool I own (and I've had loads) is a Boss BR80 which will do everything Dan's Tascam trainer plus his old recorder and more. Like changing pitch so you play along live with Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher ;-) Plus it has all the Boss COSM effects, works as a sound card, tuner, 8 track recorder, metronome and drum machine. Produces brilliant live recorded results too from the in built stereo mic's either for my solo acoustic or band. I used to record rehreasals and gigs and send to the band so we could all improve. Boy was I not popular at first. As a digital recorder though it's a pretty strark experience for the singer with none of the real warmth of the live setting and she did threaten to quit. Focuses the mind though. Only problem is that so many people uses streaming services now that many don't have CD's to rip .wav or mp3's tracks to load on. I like the look of the irealpro app but as I spend way too much time already on computers and smart phones I'd rather stick to something hard wired for practice. I nearly bought a Positive Grid Spark (pre-ordered but eventually cancelled) as I think that is the future, but again it's laptops tablets and software again!
I haven't watched this whole episode (in case it's been mentioned already); however, there is another great practice tool right there in the background and that is the Yamaha THR10 amplifier. I have a newer incarnation of this (the THR10C) and can't say enough good things about it as a practice tool. At low and even high volumes it delivers crisp clear tones and incredible low end. It's great for late night solo work which requires a good sound at respectable volumes. My friends routinely comment on how great the (Fender) Deluxe tone is, as well as the emulated feeling of tube response and sag. So, along with these other great tools (which I either have had or am currently using), the THR amp series is (IMHO) worthy of consideration with regards to quality sounding, decibel friendly, home practice sessions tools.
I would recommend the Trio+. Its a great device and a lot easier to use than most other loopers as you don't have to press the 'record' and 'stop' after you set the initial band up. It auto starts recording when you start playing and stops recording at the end of the looping time you set. Another great 'tool' for practice is the JS-10 from Boss. That is an eBand and does everything the Tascam does but also has speakers so you don't need an Amp - its a great home/bedroom speaker. It also has a lot of backing tracks, a tuner, an Aux in, headphone sockets and the GT100 effects too. I know its not a 'pedal' but it is a great practice tool and bedroom amp in one device.
You talk about sound and playing - one inspiring the other - and that's true all over the place. As I got better at photography, I pushed the limits of what my equipment could do, got better cameras and lenses, and that inspired me to be a better photographer again.
16:25 I have often heard this version of the joke, How do you know when there's a singer at your door? Becase he doesn't know when to come in and has the wrong key.
I have a tip for Mick, and anyone else who finds it difficult to nail the tempo with a looper (I certainly did). It's tricky; if you're a few micro-seconds out it can ruin the loop. One workaround is to use a metronome app on your phone. The ones with a flash and click are good. Do the first loop without playing guitar. Just focus on hitting the button exactly on the one after 4 or 8 bars or whatever you need. Then the following loops will all follow that timing. You still have to get the subsequent loops in time, but its much easier, as you've removed the difficulty of having to play and focus on hitting the loop button at the right time simultaneously.
I had trouble getting the tempo right with a looper so I gave up and got the Ditto looper x4 which has midi and synced it to a Beatbuddy. Problem solved, works great.
I didn't even wait to finish your video, I paused it and immediately bought a copy of iReal Pro for my Mac and another for my Android tablet. It's just what I've been looking for. Well, one of the things. I learn so much from every one of your videos.
Hey guys, I'm considering the trio+ as a jamming/looper. The irealpro is a great suggestion. I'm with Dan on the 20 minutes a day. Even if you are just noodling. I stopped playing for a few month, and it turned into 9 years. Don't do that to yourself.
First, thanks for this video, it is a great topic for those of us who have to practice at home, alone. (don´t care how it is spelled). Now my gripe. It has been brewing for some time and at last I have to say something. Mick, for gods sake stop twiddling the knobs all the time! Just as a great sound has been achieved and Dan screams `Oh Man´ you immediately play with the controls before my poor brain can take in the sound. Try and give the sounds time to sink in before changing everything. The Captain could learn from this too. Otherwise, this is a great show and as a pair you two are great. I think the Trio+ would suit me best. There, steam vented and I feel much better!

Well thanks for the reply Mick, but maybe an extra five seconds to clock the settings on a great tone is not asking too much. For those with short attention spans the show is already too long, whereas true aficionados would not mind a slightly longer show. To anyone having a hard time turning the looper on and off exactly at the right time - many loopers have the "auto quantize" function, which eliminates the problem. Digitech Jamman has it, I think the Boss looper has it too. It basically stretches or squeezes your recorded loop, without changing pitch, so that it matches the beat exactly. A real life saver for me - makes looping VERY easy.
I am glad to hear players be honest about what works and doesn't. I thought it was just me that gets overwhelmed with all the knobs and that I need things to be as simple as possible. Even after years of playing I still need you to explain things slowly to me.

Yep, another top episode, fellas! Be around the block with all sorts of kit - pause/play the CD player playing the track, & starting the cassette to record multiple versions of the same section. Then bought the CD version of the Tascam, with minor success, looked at the "Vox thing", which was called "JamVox" but didn't buy that one. Best results recently were with a PC program called "Guitar Pro", which I think is basically a scoring app, but you can load in tracks from an approved source & it gives you all the instrument parts, which you can them isolate, slow down & repeat phrases. Tried apps on the iPad, just can't quite get the same result- possibly too fixated on the amp, cab & fx models. Perhaps I just need less tech (!!!) and go back to basics & a more rigorous practice routine ...
For me, the biggest value in the Tascam trainer is the ability to change the *pitch* of the song, for those where my guitar isn't perfectly in tune with the song. That, plus you can put a section of a song into a loop and play it over and over and over.
Re: the copyright issues of iReal Pro. Not sure what the UK copyright laws are but here in Canada, you cannot copyright harmony, only melodies. Since iReal Pro only gives you the changes, you're in the clear. Also, if you are using it exclusively for educational/practice purposes, it falls under fair use. That being said, iReal Pro is a godsend on gigs, when someone calls a tune I don't know or a tune I do know in a key I'm fuzzy on. (Another jazz practice tip: do everything in all 12 keys!) ryshpanmusic Maybe a silly question but how does the iReal Pro help you during a gig? Does someone call out "DO blue bossa in Bb!" And you just click on blue bossa and change keys, then mount the laptop on your stand on stage?
I feel validated to see the Yamaha thr in your room. I think they put out amazing tone and take batteries and pedals! They are so great. The tones are well done
My friend had a ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky and the trick to getting it (or any looper) in time is to stomp in and out on the of the one of your first bar and the bar after your progression. Also make sure to play into and out of your progression/riff to make the transition feel natural. I believe the RC is quantized which helps while the Junky and Ditto aren't which makes staying tight a bit more tricky.
Great find with the iReal Pro- that's awesome! I graduated from Berklee 24 years ago, and all the wonderful ability, and musicality I once knew- has sadly atrophied. I can sympathize with your pain and frustration Dan. iReal will definitely find its way into my daily (hopefully) routine! I too am a big fan of Ireal pro. I use it with my jazz band all the time. It sounds great when used with the THR10. Blending the backing track with the great guitar sound of the amp is a really inspiring practice tool. I was surprised you didn't mentioned it, given there was one sitting behind you!
One thing that helped my playing phrasing and musicality a lot was learning how to sing (scat along with) what your playing. It helps to break down the bridge between your brain fingers n feeling... it also helps with your ear training a ton
You can play TH-cam videos at different speeds now too, it's in the options somewhere. And put time stamps in the URL to loop parts of a song etc. And Chuck a bunch of embedded videos into a htm page so they're all in one place.

Mick is the guy you think you are or aspire to be; Dan is the mate who is both a better guitarist and Einstein-level genius, yet never throws those facts in your face.
I would suggest that in many ways, when Mick's in That Pedal Show, he's somewhat out of his main element. It's worth keeping in mind that he's a blues guitarist first and foremost, and an amazing one at that, good enough to be what got me to come around to blues again. Blues is not the only thing covered on That Pedal Show, and secondly, Mick is a music journalist. If you want to see where he really shines, I would pick up any 2000s issue of Guitarist magazine to see that he's a world class writer and one of the keepers of class in rock journalism. Watching a show about pedals while using TheGigRig stuff as a base is bound to have Dan in the spotlight a little bit more. I'm also pretty sure that Mick is in charge of a significant amount of post-production for all the TPS episodes.
So we learn from this episode that sounding great will not matter at all if you can´t play the guitar. I know many musicians who might profit from hearing some brutal honesty, myself included. Great job guys!
The verb 'to practise' is indeed spelled with 's' in British English. However, in the title of the video, 'practice' is a noun (used here as an adjective, like in 'bus stop' or 'boat race').
Hey Mick. In answer to last week. Yes that did make me feel better. And laugh. But I only really felt better after seeing the patch cable on the Marshall fixed in this episode. 😂 Isn't that crazy how OCD works? I'm halfway across the planet worrying about if a patch cable is messed on an amp I don't own in the U.K.
i dont know if they mentioned it, but most people are already sitting in front of the most incredibly powerful learning, practice, jamming, songwriting tool right thru from scratchpad idea to polished finish master in a single environment and that's your pc. Infinitely more powerful and flexible than even the best stand alone hardware box in the DAW environment and that's not the least bit an overstatement.
IReal pro is a fantastic learning resource, I,m just a blues, country guy, but using iReal pro to ease in a little jazz, great fun, thanks guy's always a pleasure.

For practice I bought a Yamaha THR on the weekend. Killer product. Decent sounds at bedroom levels plus an app that you can use like a phrase trainer that plays through the amp. This plus IReal Pro and your set

I bought the tascam guitar trainer years back where you put the cd in it! Still use it today!!! Magic! the modern unit looks great, especially being able to record yourself!
I downloaded that app and wow... what a useful tool. I don't have the option to play my amp all the time so to be able to solo over a moving chord progression was amazing. Thank you so much!
BTW, there's a really cool app called Memu that emulates an Android on a Windows PC that works really well. I downloaded and installed it on my PC (I-5, 8 GB RAM, nVidia graphics,) and it works great.
Hey guys, Long time watcher/TPS T-shirt wearer, first time commenter. Really enjoyed this episode and definitely given me some ideas to progress as a drummer (with a pedal addiction) fumbling his way through learning guitar. Watching this and Mick talking again about his phobia of all things complicated, made me think it would be awesome to see a 'couple of knobs' (ha..) episode with your collective favorite one or two knob pedals of varying effects. I'd also personally love to see a Dan's 'Probably going to get me fired from a gig' pedal board filled with any favorite weird and wonderful/kind of useless pedals from his collection. I used to have one of these Ibanez Rock and Plays in the 90's. You could slow things down (pitch wasn't corrected) and add chorus and overdrive to your guitar sound. Best thing for transcriptions. I studied jazz about 20 years ago in Australia under Jim Kelly (honk), but now all that is gone as well, so I'm keen to do this 20min a day/6 month thing with you guys!
Just opened my copy of Ireal Pro which I've had for awhile. Never got on with it before but after turning on the diagrams I've learn't more chords in 30 minutes that's I've learnt in the last two years. Bloody great app😀👍👍👍
Weird, these last couple of weeks I've been really trying to focus on disciplined practice. Metronomes, drills, the whole bit. Trying to stop myself drifting into noodling is my biggest challenge. And stopping myself from obsessing over gear, of course.
Oh man, Dan, your level of sincerity gets me each time! And yea, I had no idea you guys struggle with the same things as myself when around jazz charts (keeping in mind the abyss of a skill gap between me and you) It is even inspiring in a way.
Agree that iReal Pro will make you a better player, no doubt. Forget it sounds "cheesy"...that's not the point. It's better than anything. Combine that with some Looper work, and you WILL get better.

As always, these guys know what's good. I downloaded iReal Pro at the office, drove home, and I was 3x better already! Seriously though, that app is killer and I have been playing nonstop and learning lots despite being a fairly good player. It's a lot of fun and helpful.

I Love my Boss DR-880 Drum Machine, which contains Tons of Drum Kits, Percussion, Bass / Synth-bass and an Internal GT-6 Guitar Effects Processor. I have programmed: Santana, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye and it is Great to Practice with. Very Inspiring as you have Drums, Bass, Conga's, Shakers. Better then a Metronome - for me.

I've been addicted to your channel for months, and I have learned so much from you guys! Thanks for doing this! Now, I finally have a couple of suggestions for episode topics. 1. "Better Rhythm Tones" for all of us unashamed background guitarists. You could talk about eq-ing your amp and overdrive to back vocals or solos, and you could also talk about clever ways to use modulation effects in rhythm. 2. "Using Guitar Pedals on Other Instruments". You could bring on a guest bass player or keyboardist. Just some thoughts. Keep up the good work!
My two main 'practise' tools are the Digitech Trio+ and the Boss JS-10. Obviously the Trio+ has a great looper function as well as creating Songs rather than just a 'single' structure loop that just keeps going around the same Chord structure. The ability to have 'different' parts, a verse, a chorus, a bridge, a solo section, an intro/outro, makes it a lot more interesting and versatile tool. The JS-10 is also a great tool. It comes with numerous backing tracks, ability to add songs, tracks etc to it via an Aux port, the ability to change key, change tempo, slow solo's down to try to work out and play along with until you can match or better the original tempo etc. It also works as a great bedroom amp with the Boss GT100 built in - lots and lots of presets for changing your sound, different pedals, drives etc built in - meaning you can just plug in your guitar, find a preset to suit the backing track and jam over it - all without needing to have your full rig set-up. It has its own built in amp and speaker so its an 'all in one' practise tool. Even if you just want to noodle in your bedroom, you can just plug in and play - even use headphones too...

I LOVE that you are pointing out the copyright issues... protecting the musicians is important... however, as far as I know, a chord progression cannot be copyrighted... so a chord progression is fine, a progression WITH melody is a song. That you can't just use openly.

Thomas McAteer alternatively, you could use the formula d-1 where d is the number of pedals which will cause a divorce . therefore n+1 = d-1 , therefore d = n + 2 , meaning if you buy pedals one at a time , you'll be fine !

Here to vouch for the Trio - I’ve been buying endless reams of guitar stuff since starting, what, 15 years ago? I have a number of guitars and pedals and apps etc, but since getting this for my birthday my playing has come on phenomenally. I’m not that great a guitarist and practise has always been me playing things I already know, or bits of. Now I sit down, get a chord progression, and then start pushing myself to improvise - something I’ve always shied away from because it was too hard. I mean I’ve a LONG way to go but this has dramatically changed things for me.

I also highly recommend Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music.
- Very consistent with speeding up and slowing down, hard to hear if this changes the pitch at all!
- You can raise or lower the pitch by an octave above or below (and even smaller fractions)
- Set EQ levels to hear lower or higher notes more clearly
- Set a portion of the song to loop continuously (for example, if you're learning a solo and don't want to take your hand off the guitar to press a button)
- Has a feature to freeze a portion of the song and it plays one note/chord continuously (if you're really stuck!)
- Most importantly, if you're doing a gig you can download the song's MP3 files and save a playlist of all the songs you need to learn! An absolute lifesaver! :)

This was mentioned below but it bears repeating. You can slow down TH-cam videos and the PITCH WON'T CHANGE - Brilliant!!! Hover your mouse over the bottom of the TH-cam video and when the task bar appears > click on 'Settings' > click 'Speed' > then select the speed you want - .75 - .5 - .25. It makes learning difficult passages so much easier. Plus it's great for comedic effect. Guthrie Govan speaking at half speed is hilarious - he sounds like drunk Guthrie. Lol.

On the Trio, you don't need to count yourself in, just set it to "listen" and it will not start until you start playing. When you are done teaching it your rhythm and progression, hit the switch and the backing track starts to play. It's a lot less stressful than trying to get a loop just right.

I mean, the amount of content, information, laughs ahead of you is just incredible. These guys smash it out of the park and are just superb! I've had the Trio+ about 12 months now and love it. Just brilliant for practice, like having your own band who dream up bass lines and beats to your wish as needed. One of the most fun and valuable tools I've bought which I hope to use live in an acoustic solo setting for some songs. I mostly lay down some chord progressions in various styles and then use it work on arpeggios, triads, scales and following/nailing chord tones. The best practice tool I own (and I've had loads) is a Boss BR80 which will do everything Dan's Tascam trainer plus his old recorder and more. Like changing pitch so you play along live with Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher ;-) Plus it has all the Boss COSM effects, works as a sound card, tuner, 8 track recorder, metronome and drum machine. Produces brilliant live recorded results too from the in built stereo mic's either for my solo acoustic or band. I used to record rehreasals and gigs and send to the band so we could all improve. Boy was I not popular at first. As a digital recorder though it's a pretty strark experience for the singer with none of the real warmth of the live setting and she did threaten to quit. Focuses the mind though. Only problem is that so many people uses streaming services now that many don't have CD's to rip .wav or mp3's tracks to load on. I like the look of the irealpro app but as I spend way too much time already on computers and smart phones I'd rather stick to something hard wired for practice. I nearly bought a Positive Grid Spark (pre-ordered but eventually cancelled) as I think that is the future, but again it's laptops tablets and software again!
I haven't watched this whole episode (in case it's been mentioned already); however, there is another great practice tool right there in the background and that is the Yamaha THR10 amplifier.
I have a newer incarnation of this (the THR10C) and can't say enough good things about it as a practice tool. At low and even high volumes it delivers crisp clear tones and incredible low end. It's great for late night solo work which requires a good sound at respectable volumes. My friends routinely comment on how great the (Fender) Deluxe tone is, as well as the emulated feeling of tube response and sag.
So, along with these other great tools (which I either have had or am currently using), the THR amp series is (IMHO) worthy of consideration with regards to quality sounding, decibel friendly, home practice sessions tools.
Guys ... big Shawn Tubbs fan here .. would be awesome to get him on the show. That man has chops a butcher would be proud of!

I would recommend the Trio+. Its a great device and a lot easier to use than most other loopers as you don't have to press the 'record' and 'stop' after you set the initial band up. It auto starts recording when you start playing and stops recording at the end of the looping time you set.
Another great 'tool' for practice is the JS-10 from Boss. That is an eBand and does everything the Tascam does but also has speakers so you don't need an Amp - its a great home/bedroom speaker. It also has a lot of backing tracks, a tuner, an Aux in, headphone sockets and the GT100 effects too. I know its not a 'pedal' but it is a great practice tool and bedroom amp in one device.
You talk about sound and playing - one inspiring the other - and that's true all over the place. As I got better at photography, I pushed the limits of what my equipment could do, got better cameras and lenses, and that inspired me to be a better photographer again.

I have a tip for Mick, and anyone else who finds it difficult to nail the tempo with a looper (I certainly did). It's tricky; if you're a few micro-seconds out it can ruin the loop. One workaround is to use a metronome app on your phone. The ones with a flash and click are good. Do the first loop without playing guitar. Just focus on hitting the button exactly on the one after 4 or 8 bars or whatever you need. Then the following loops will all follow that timing. You still have to get the subsequent loops in time, but its much easier, as you've removed the difficulty of having to play and focus on hitting the loop button at the right time simultaneously.

I had trouble getting the tempo right with a looper so I gave up and got the Ditto looper x4 which has midi and synced it to a Beatbuddy. Problem solved, works great.

I'm with Dan on the 20 minutes a day. Even if you are just noodling. I stopped playing for a few month, and it turned into 9 years. Don't do that to yourself.
First, thanks for this video, it is a great topic for those of us who have to practice at home, alone. (don´t care how it is spelled). Now my gripe. It has been brewing for some time and at last I have to say something. Mick, for gods sake stop twiddling the knobs all the time! Just as a great sound has been achieved and Dan screams `Oh Man´ you immediately play with the controls before my poor brain can take in the sound. Try and give the sounds time to sink in before changing everything. The Captain could learn from this too. Otherwise, this is a great show and as a pair you two are great. I think the Trio+ would suit me best. There, steam vented and I feel much better!

To anyone having a hard time turning the looper on and off exactly at the right time - many loopers have the "auto quantize" function, which eliminates the problem. Digitech Jamman has it, I think the Boss looper has it too. It basically stretches or squeezes your recorded loop, without changing pitch, so that it matches the beat exactly. A real life saver for me - makes looping VERY easy.

I am glad to hear players be honest about what works and doesn't. I thought it was just me that gets overwhelmed with all the knobs and that I need things to be as simple as possible. Even after years of playing I still need you to explain things slowly to me.

Wow. Just wow. This was so helpful! Thank you so much. I've watched many of your shows to learn about pedals, but this is my first comment. The Trio+ and IReal Pro will be my next purchases. Thank you Mick and Dan for all that you do.
Yep, another top episode, fellas! Be around the block with all sorts of kit - pause/play the CD player playing the track, & starting the cassette to record multiple versions of the same section.
Then bought the CD version of the Tascam, with minor success, looked at the "Vox thing", which was called "JamVox" but didn't buy that one. Best results recently were with a PC program called "Guitar Pro", which I think is basically a scoring app, but you can load in tracks from an approved source & it gives you all the instrument parts, which you can them isolate, slow down & repeat phrases. Tried apps on the iPad, just can't quite get the same result- possibly too fixated on the amp, cab & fx models. Perhaps I just need less tech (!!!) and go back to basics & a more rigorous practice routine ...
For me, the biggest value in the Tascam trainer is the ability to change the *pitch* of the song, for those where my guitar isn't perfectly in tune with the song. That, plus you can put a section of a song into a loop and play it over and over and over.
Re: the copyright issues of iReal Pro. Not sure what the UK copyright laws are but here in Canada, you cannot copyright harmony, only melodies. Since iReal Pro only gives you the changes, you're in the clear. Also, if you are using it exclusively for educational/practice purposes, it falls under fair use.
That being said, iReal Pro is a godsend on gigs, when someone calls a tune I don't know or a tune I do know in a key I'm fuzzy on. (Another jazz practice tip: do everything in all 12 keys!)

I feel validated to see the Yamaha thr in your room. I think they put out amazing tone and take batteries and pedals! They are so great. The tones are well done
My friend had a ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky and the trick to getting it (or any looper) in time is to stomp in and out on the of the one of your first bar and the bar after your progression. Also make sure to play into and out of your progression/riff to make the transition feel natural. I believe the RC is quantized which helps while the Junky and Ditto aren't which makes staying tight a bit more tricky.

I too am a big fan of Ireal pro. I use it with my jazz band all the time. It sounds great when used with the THR10. Blending the backing track with the great guitar sound of the amp is a really inspiring practice tool. I was surprised you didn't mentioned it, given there was one sitting behind you!
One thing that helped my playing phrasing and musicality a lot was learning how to sing (scat along with) what your playing. It helps to break down the bridge between your brain fingers n feeling... it also helps with your ear training a ton

Drum machines aren't "arguably more inspiring" - they're flat-out better! Playing against a real beat will teach you phrasing and dynamics.

Mick is the guy you think you are or aspire to be; Dan is the mate who is both a better guitarist and Einstein-level genius, yet never throws those facts in your face.
I would suggest that in many ways, when Mick's in That Pedal Show, he's somewhat out of his main element. It's worth keeping in mind that he's a blues guitarist first and foremost, and an amazing one at that, good enough to be what got me to come around to blues again. Blues is not the only thing covered on That Pedal Show, and secondly, Mick is a music journalist. If you want to see where he really shines, I would pick up any 2000s issue of Guitarist magazine to see that he's a world class writer and one of the keepers of class in rock journalism. Watching a show about pedals while using TheGigRig stuff as a base is bound to have Dan in the spotlight a little bit more. I'm also pretty sure that Mick is in charge of a significant amount of post-production for all the TPS episodes.

i dont know if they mentioned it, but most people are already sitting in front of the most incredibly powerful learning, practice, jamming, songwriting tool right thru from scratchpad idea to polished finish master in a single environment and that's your pc. Infinitely more powerful and flexible than even the best stand alone hardware box in the DAW environment and that's not the least bit an overstatement.

Hey guys, Long time watcher/TPS T-shirt wearer, first time commenter. Really enjoyed this episode and definitely given me some ideas to progress as a drummer (with a pedal addiction) fumbling his way through learning guitar. Watching this and Mick talking again about his phobia of all things complicated, made me think it would be awesome to see a 'couple of knobs' (ha..) episode with your collective favorite one or two knob pedals of varying effects. I'd also personally love to see a Dan's 'Probably going to get me fired from a gig' pedal board filled with any favorite weird and wonderful/kind of useless pedals from his collection. I used to have one of these Ibanez Rock and Plays in the 90's. You could slow things down (pitch wasn't corrected) and add chorus and overdrive to your guitar sound. Best thing for transcriptions. I studied jazz about 20 years ago in Australia under Jim Kelly (honk), but now all that is gone as well, so I'm keen to do this 20min a day/6 month thing with you guys!

Weird, these last couple of weeks I've been really trying to focus on disciplined practice. Metronomes, drills, the whole bit. Trying to stop myself drifting into noodling is my biggest challenge. And stopping myself from obsessing over gear, of course.
Oh man, Dan, your level of sincerity gets me each time! And yea, I had no idea you guys struggle with the same things as myself when around jazz charts (keeping in mind the abyss of a skill gap between me and you) It is even inspiring in a way.
Agree that iReal Pro will make you a better player, no doubt. Forget it sounds "cheesy"...that's not the point. It's better than anything. Combine that with some Looper work, and you WILL get better.

As always, these guys know what's good. I downloaded iReal Pro at the office, drove home, and I was 3x better already! Seriously though, that app is killer and I have been playing nonstop and learning lots despite being a fairly good player. It's a lot of fun and helpful.

I Love my Boss DR-880 Drum Machine, which contains Tons of Drum Kits, Percussion, Bass / Synth-bass and an Internal GT-6 Guitar Effects Processor. I have programmed: Santana, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye and it is Great to Practice with. Very Inspiring as you have Drums, Bass, Conga's, Shakers. Better then a Metronome - for me.

I've been addicted to your channel for months, and I have learned so much from you guys! Thanks for doing this! Now, I finally have a couple of suggestions for episode topics. 1. "Better Rhythm Tones" for all of us unashamed background guitarists. You could talk about eq-ing your amp and overdrive to back vocals or solos, and you could also talk about clever ways to use modulation effects in rhythm. 2. "Using Guitar Pedals on Other Instruments". You could bring on a guest bass player or keyboardist. Just some thoughts. Keep up the good work!

My two main 'practise' tools are the Digitech Trio+ and the Boss JS-10. Obviously the Trio+ has a great looper function as well as creating Songs rather than just a 'single' structure loop that just keeps going around the same Chord structure. The ability to have 'different' parts, a verse, a chorus, a bridge, a solo section, an intro/outro, makes it a lot more interesting and versatile tool.
The JS-10 is also a great tool. It comes with numerous backing tracks, ability to add songs, tracks etc to it via an Aux port, the ability to change key, change tempo, slow solo's down to try to work out and play along with until you can match or better the original tempo etc. It also works as a great bedroom amp with the Boss GT100 built in - lots and lots of presets for changing your sound, different pedals, drives etc built in - meaning you can just plug in your guitar, find a preset to suit the backing track and jam over it - all without needing to have your full rig set-up. It has its own built in amp and speaker so its an 'all in one' practise tool. Even if you just want to noodle in your bedroom, you can just plug in and play - even use headphones too...
