Mitch skipped his high school graduation to be on the show. Kirstie was doing her first year at the University of Oklahoma, and Scott was at the University of Southern California. They were all 19. Avi had already graduated from college, and was looking at a possible opera career (!). Kevin had just graduated from Yale, and was preparing to enter medical school. Or law school. Or rule the world.

Maybe if he had gone for world ruler. We would all be better off😀. But I couldn’t have lived happy without the music

This is probably one of my favourite sing off performances from them actually. Mainly because of that genious "roller coaster bump feeling" in my stomach at that first pause. Soooooo cleverly arranged and executed. So smart to use the silence in such a loud way.
Also, everyones voices were screwed by the end of singoff, in all groups. They pressured them for so many weeks, at least 6 days a week, random rehearsals at night etc. Scott got b12 and adrenaline (I think) shot on the last night to bring his voice back. Safe to say.... not proper working conditions.

So true about the "pregnant pause." They really took Ben's advice on board about not rushing and getting ahead of themselves, but hanging back to create tension and anticipation. This performance is stellar.

Yeah these weekly shows are kinda ridiculous and build in a way which kinda makes things tougher along the way. Guess it goes for any contestant, but for sure it's a flaw in how these shows are done.

Thanks for getting back to this.
Avi is so good on this one. To sustain that beat with precision consistency all through the song is crazy difficult.
Several people have mentioned that the gunshot effect Kevin does is not allowed on TV anymore? Kevin and Avi reportedly clicked immediately when they met the day before the audition. Kevin was studying how to produce different sounds every day and they were rooming together at the venue which would continue for several years after the SingOff just as Mitch and Scott did. Fortunately, in Avi, they had the ICCA champion who had just caused that competition to rename the award from beatboxer to rythmn section to give it to him. The only other time it has been awarded to a vocal bass instead of a beatboxer is in 2017.
The next performance was done on the same night so watch Kirstie get through that one as well absolutely professional. Kirstie is the only woman to ever win in the Sing Off. All the rest of the winners were all male groups.

    • @JesseReacts
      @JesseReacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Avi of course did great haha. Guess the consistency is definitely mentionable. They tandem between Kevin and Avi is pretty ridiculous with these quick/dynamic arrangements throughout the show. The chemistry looked pretty obvious from the get go. I guess all the experiences outside the practices and performances are a big chunk to the success.
Curious about the next one for sure! Kirstie is amazing

Revving of motorcycles is a nod to the movie Easy Rider, where this song became well known. I love Kevin’s “gunshot” too

Scott actually sang in a rock band in high school, so he was pretty comfortable with this. I always have to think about opera student Avi and classical cellist Kevin, and how much of a stretch form them this was! Great reaction - you'll see that they get stronger and tighter every week as they figure out how to work as a band together.

😅You don't know this song if you thought Scott wasn't doing a rock vocal from the beginning. Listen to the original, it starts slow and it builds up...Scott did EVERYTHING right with the song. They ALL did!
Avi's consistent thunder bass throughout the song
Kevin.... Sometimes there is NO NAME for what Kevin does!
Kirstie and Mitch accompanied with their guitar like harmonies.
I watched this when it originally aired back in 2011 and I'm STILL BLOWN AWAY by their talent today!!

PTX do their research. Every aspect of an arrangement is decided intentionally. Even back then, you can see how meticulous they were. It helps to know the history of the originals to appreciate the genius of their covers..

@@JesseReacts no worries! As mentioned Scott was in a Rock band at age 14 they were called Ewoks. There is a video of teen Scott performing with his band here YT.
I know Mitch gets TONS of attention because of his voice (as he should) but people rarely notice EVERY vocal Scott is doing in the background.
Scott is a vocal chameleon, he can sound Pop, R&B, Rock, Classical, Opera ect..
He picks up foreign languages to sing. Spanish, Korean, Japanese, French, Italian. His are the haunting melodies in the background hardly anyone notices.
A baritone that can sing bass and hit high falsettos.
They are ALL SUPER TALENTED, but people will always pickout Mitch.
Like the Sing Off Judge Shaun said, "All 5 of you is what makes PENTATONIX"

Your thoughts on how much could have changed if one thing had gone wrong actually kind of echo things Mitch's dad has said about his own role in the whole thing. He almost didn't let Mitch go to the competition, and only changed his mind when he found out it was Scott and Kirstin he'd be with. At a convention when he was talking about it, Mitch's dad almost cried when he talked about what that would have cost Mitch, everything he would have missed out on and how much it would have derailed his life.

I love this performance! "Born To Be Wild" was the theme song for the 1969 movie "Easy Rider," with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as free-spirited, motorcycle-riding buddies who traveled across the US smoking weed and commenting on the political, social and cultural issues of the day. Pentatonix caught all the things that made the song and the movie so relevant, from the bubbling discontent and gun violence to the revving motorcycle engines that represented leaving the corrupt establishment behind, and heading out into the freedom of the open road. With no instruments and 5 primarily teenage voices, I think they captured the burgeoning heavy metal rage as well as anyone could. Super clever arrangement.
