This video is the 2nd and final video in the "Repadding a Le Blanc 'Paper Clip' Contra Bass Clarinet" series. In this video, I explain some of the things that make the contra bass clarinet so interesting and difficult to repair. I also play test the instrument after it is completed.

My high school had a straight version of this clarinet. it was one giant tube with a bend at the top leading to the mouthpiece and another small bend at the bottom that went to the bell. the thing was so long you needed to sit on a tall stool to play it or stand to play it. it was hands down the most unwieldy instrument I've ever seen in person.

Unfortunately these paperclip contras are no longer in production and were replaced by these models you're describing (I'm playing on one right now in college). The paperclips were more structurally and acoustically sound, more portable, and could go lower. Really a terrible decision to discontinue them on ConnSelmer's part

Pretty good for a Trumpet guy just doing some random doodling on the spot! Also, that thing looks amazing cleaned up. My HS had one of these things, but it was never in such good condition, looking every bit of the nearly 40 years old that it was back then.
