@@ShawnSlapsDaBass Considering the novelty of alto clarinets in modern high school concert bands, I’m pleasantly surprised that Smartmusic made a video about the instrument
I’ve been playing clarinet for three years and I’m switching to bass because my…friend??(complicated relationship) moved to another country and she was our only player. Sad circumstances but I’m still exited to get started!
Thank you sir, that was a very inspiring and complete video. Could you do a video on the different types, makes (e.g. resin vs wood), and what to look for in a bass clarinet. 👍
I am a clarinetist in middle school (7th ) and the reason I chose clarinet in 5th grade was to play bass clarinet and I ended up telling all my friends my dream now basically every clarinetist wants to play bass clarinet. The try outs for bass clarinet are either going to be at the end of the year or the beginning of 8th grade. I really want to get bass clarinet anytime I hear it I feel like... I dunno like really happy and it makes me want to cry from happiness. I really want to practice clarinet so for the auditions I am ready for whatever we are doing. Do you know what I should practice?Like any scale or like notes? Please help! Thanks! (Sorry for bad grammar)
I'm in high school and there's only two bass clarinets in the band: me and this other kid. He's the only bass in 1st band and I'm the only bass in 2nd band. And in my last year of middle school I used to be the only bass clarinet in the entire band. Barely anyone plays the Bass Clarinet in my school, and that's what I like about it.
Ive been playing the bass clarinet for 2 years and it is great. I love the deep and rich sound it has. I hope you make the try-outs! Its cool that you made all the clarinets want to play the bass clarinet lol. In my school I’m the only bass clarinet. Again, good luck haha.
I really want to play bass clarinet too. Saddly my school is really really poor (small town + Merica I KNOW IT AMERICA) And I would have to get my parents to rent. But that will never happen so y a y.
I know I'm probably a bit late, but you should practice all 12 major scales and the chromatic. I'm a saxophonist who's trying to learn Bass Clarinet, and this is my first day, but I'm also a junior in high school. From experience, it's always great to have the scales down. Good luck!
Hi I play the bass clarinet too I love it I know how to play it but I can’t play all the keys but I used to play the clarinet I was just asking what the name of the bass clarinet and then my music teacher said I can play it now I have it for over the summer
Jose Suchite You think the Contrabass Clarinets Reed is big? You haven’t seen the Octocontraaltos reed. It’s giant! And yes, I do know there is such thing as an Octocontrabass Clarinet and that it’s bigger, but I don’t know how big the Reed is though.
You forgot to mention that some bass clarinets don't disconnect the upper and lower joint. Also my bass clarinet doesn't have the register key that goes to the neck and no button at the bottom. Also most bass clarinets don't go down to a low c like yours and mine is semi broken... So um yeah my schools bass clarinets suck. The best one we have is the worst band and thats hers.
Smiley Face who switches from flute to bass clarinet? Not trying to be rude, just a little bit baffled Edit: Apparently several people switch from flute to bass clarinet. I guess it makes sense, a clarinetist wouldn’t have to watch a tutorial video on it
I have played the clarinet for a long time. My band teacher told me that i could play the bass clarinet because they want the low bass to be more louder so im the only bass clarinet and one of my friends and thats it:
I play Oboe for my school band and I want to switch to Bass Clarinet but the band won’t let us switch instruments once we choose a instrument we can’t switch that is one of the reasons I hate my school
This probably won't get many responses, but I'm a Saxophone player who would love to play Bass Clarinet, but I've never played Clarinet before. Is it a stupid idea to learn bass clarinet when I haven't learned clarinet?
Not stupid at all. However, most musicians generally add the bass clarinet, since the Bb clarinet is the most challenging to learn. Once you learn it, all the others seem easy by comparison.
Disappointing because he never actually teaches anything about playing it, just setting it up and the very basics. I know all that stuff already. Additionally, he doesn't take in as much mouthpiece as most of the other professional players suggest in their videos. Perhaps on his clarinet he doesn't need to with his embouchure and voicing but on mine if I only take in that little (he said ½ inch) the tone is very weak. BC mpcs are big and you need to eat a decent amount of mpc...more than a tenor sax, for example, which is my reference as a long time tenor player. I use tenor reeds on my BC mpc and they work great but the mpc tip itself is much bigger and fatter than any tenor mpc I have used. If you want t a full rich tone you need to take in more mpc than this guy shows, in my opinion.
His voice is so fucking calming it’s scary
Ive been playing it 3 years. Why did I watch this
CS:GO Plays And Fails
Me too I’ve been playing for 3.5 years
CS:GO Plays And Fails I’ve been playing it since 5th grade and I’m in 8th I’m not sure why I’m even here tbh lmao
I don’t know. You tell me
oh heck
Dude same
I don't play bass clarinet, I just used this as a relaxing asmr video
Good news, its an intro to clarinet video so guess what?
I've been playing bass for 5 years and am currently a clarinet performance major. Why I'm watching this? I don't know.
If you put the ligature first on and slide it up a little and insert the reed in from the top you can never damage the tip of the reed.
Is it me or do most of them look like they were forced to do this??
You must have not seen the alto clarinet video...
Shawn Brandt I have not, but will do:)

Has anyone else been playing bass clarinet for a long time and watched this because why not. And it was in your recommended.
I was searching for a video like this, thanks a lot for this.

I just got bass clarinet jr high band and this really helped me identify the key part of a bass clarinet and how to set it up
Thank you sir, that was a very inspiring and complete video. Could you do a video on the different types, makes (e.g. resin vs wood), and what to look for in a bass clarinet. 👍
omg ty this is very helpful im starting bass clarient this year and im very nervous 😭
I just tried a 70’s model today, teacher said I did kind of good. Thanks for the lesson!
Just switched today from tenor sax to bass clarinet, thanks
I want that Buffet Low C so bad 😍
Thank you for these very useful instructions!
I'm so excited to start playing. I'm an upright bassist, but I really wanna play a wind instrument as well

Brian Henry realy you could do clarinet in 5th grade... Wow our schools suck. Well I already play bass clarinet and I'm in 7th grade.

I have been playing tuba for a year or two and picked bass clarinet as my second instrument and it's wayyyyy different than I thought
Thank you for this video. I’m starting to play bass clarinet after 30 years played Bb)
Great Video, very instructive and informative!
Band or orchestra? I play it in jazz band dude 💪💪
THAT REED IS *HUGE*
QWERTY417 and *THICCCCCCC*
QWERTY417 Contra Bass clarinet is much bigger
Gold but the Contra Bass tho
QWERTY417 just a tenor sax. Reed not to bad. Oh and if you join middle jazz you get tenor sax. Parts and they can go really really freaking high.

ch33ks cla99er that doesn’t mean ur bass clarinet is bad. Mine doesn’t do these things either but its very good.
I was wondering about that because mine doesn’t it’s just one big joint
Well, this did help me a lot :). My 2nd instrument after the flute.

Veteran Ntdaspi 23 clarinet to bass clarinet
Cynyx _ its common
Omg me too. I'm playing the flute and want to learn the bass clarinet
Cynyx _ lol i switched flute to bass clarinet
thank you this will help me play the bass clarinet
I'm a trumpet player but I've always preferred woodwinds tbh
Also I really love hearing this guy talk lol
Dam his is so fancy compared to mine
I’m switching to the bass clarinet from the Bb clarinet
Me too
Correction: you're ADDING the bass clarinet.
I play an alto sax, but I really enjoyed this video! Do you have a Oboe vid?
Thinking of changing from my clarinet to Bass clarinet, looking which other one to switch to... Any ideas
@@sproutboy152 Have you played it, or are playing it?
im supposed to start playing bass clarinet tomorrow. i say do your research, and ask your director.
Think of it as an add-on, instead of a switch.
Now I want to get a bass clarinet
Kris Chaperon I got it for band. Its really easy
Really they all cost about $1k
Me too I think I might start playing it next year
Do it its cool i switched from flute to the bass clarinet after sixth grade
Im in ninth now its fun
I have to learn how to play the bass clarinet in 3 months for a musical I’ve only played the alto and bari sax before any tips?
@Lucas Neef LOL needed to know how to play it 4 months ago thanks tho
I can’t even make a sound this is hard thanks for the video
i think youtube got it wrong i play BASS oon not BASS clarinet
thank you very much !!
Why am I watching this? I’ve been playing for 4 years.
Him: now, you probably have experience playing a clarinet
Me, a flute that skipped straight to bass clarinet:
I play the bass clarinet and I just felt like watching this but I can go over the break (on my first try) and the lowest note(on my first try).
I play clarinet and thinking about switching to bass clarinet
So. Like a saxophone, a bass clarinet has round, padded cup keys for the fingers instead of just finger holes and ring keys like a soprano clarinet?
Even small fingers can cover the holes on a clarinet. But without the pads only the "Big Show" could play bass clarinet.
What kinda saxophone is that
The good kind.
me, an alto sax, ah yes bass clarinet im so excited
Evolution :D
Piccolo
Flute
Clarinet
Bass clarinet
Alto sax
Tenor sax
Barry sax
In 23 minutes? Nice
Idk why I'm here I play the French horn
Edit: aayyy I play bass clarinet now
I have played the clarinet for a long time. My band teacher told me that i could play the bass clarinet because they want the low bass to be more louder so im the only bass clarinet and one of my friends and thats it:
Nathalie Jose im pretty sure im the only bass in our whole school district lol
Low bass? Or brass
Usually only need one bass clarinet. Two at the most.
I am the only bass clarinet in my entire school. Ahhhhh.
I will be in October when my schools bass gets out of shop
Samee
same tho ayyyyyyy
Same
You’re not alone buddy I’m the only Oboe player in my school
is it just me or does he look exactly like oscar from the office
YO WHAT
grazieeeeeegrazieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! molto utile
Thank you I am playing actually Clarinet and I want to play base clarinet
I play Oboe for my school band and I want to switch to Bass Clarinet but the band won’t let us switch instruments once we choose a instrument we can’t switch that is one of the reasons I hate my school

nope, i was a flutist in the beginning of 6th grade, and after my first concert , i switched to bass clarinet
No it’s not I heard Bass Clarinet is a fun and easy instrument to play and you don’t need any experience with Clarinet to play it
Not stupid at all. However, most musicians generally add the bass clarinet, since the Bb clarinet is the most challenging to learn. Once you learn it, all the others seem easy by comparison.
I've been playing this since 6th grade
watching when i’ve been playing for three years
I switched from alto sax to bass clarinet
I want to play this soo bad
Don't know why I'm here, I play the bassoon lmao.
Because you realize the error of your way and want to join the IN crowd?
Mine does not have the rods
Watching this after playing a bass clarinet player for 6 years is odd. Like bro why didn’t I think about soaking my reed in water.
his accsent sounds exactly like my dads but he actually knows grammer unlike my dad 😭😭
Noice (Australian Accent). Using a shot glass to soak the reed! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
still better than using a big cup so you dont drown the reed lol
I really want to switch to bass clarinet in my school band I think I'm to short to do it lmao
Same
I have a friend who sits on books to play her's and her leg, maybe you could try that
wrong title: should be bass clarinet basics assembly not playing!
His hands look very moist...
Yeah...
Why is there just a random tuba in the back
Day one from switching from sax to bass clarinet and I don’t know what the hell im doing
Is it just me or does it sounds like he says mapis not mouthpiece
Wait why am I watching this video even though I play the clarinet? XD
Um, because when you play one clarinet you can play them all? Besides, where do you think bass clarinet players come from?
I don't even play a woodwind
That's OK, we accept all persuasions.
That chapstick thing is corkgrease? I didn’t even know
I don’t even know why I’m watching this I play Barry sax
But saxophones also use corkgrease?
Oh my God have you never used corkgrease...?
someone make a meme of 20:33 to 20:38
I already know how to play..why am I here
Looks like a saxophone
It looks nothing like a sax.
I’m a bari sax why am I here

U put your ligature and red on wrong
His voice annoys me lol
