    That's a pretty cool effect. I would have left the inside it's natural color, but that's only a personal preference.

      You are right I also prefer to let the centre in natural colour but the problem is this solution absorbed by the wood so I will have lick on the edge of the bowl ! Thanks again for your comment brother !!

    3. A tour of an amazing veneer warehouse.
    And....
    Did you intentionally wear the shirt with the stripe at the end to match the plate?

    Hi Kostas,
    Another beautiful piece and a new technique!
    I've made and used the vinegar/steel wool solution in some of my pieces and found that some wood types need a strong tea solution applied (to add more tanic acid) before the ebonizing solution.
    The short video of the veneer shocked me to see how much veneer he has,,,along with other types of wood in stock!
    Thanks for the video!

    I started just 6 weeks ago to turn wood. Of course, as a beginner, it seems imposible to me, to create something similar but I don' give up and make many mistakes, lol. Your pieces are just outstanding and your way to present, how you create them is highly interesting and entertaining. I must admit that I start turning in the evening, after work, so I replace your coffee by Gintonic, which stimulates as well. Two questions I have so far: You use steel wool with vinegar, correct. And what is the white painting? You mention it during the video but I don't understand it...Chuckpaint? Keep on, you are every day a big inspiration for many of use

    • @KostasAnnikasDeftereos
      @KostasAnnikasDeftereos  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Andrea thanks a lot for your comment ! First of all please don't drink alcohol before or at the time that you do woodwork !! Yes I use still wool for kitchen and 8° vinegar ! The paint is not white is a light purple chalk paint ! Looks like white because the contrast of the wood and confuse the camera ! For making a platter you need only 2 tools , bowl gouge and bowl scraper ! If you learn those two tools will be very easy for you to make platter ! Platters are the most easy faceplate turning but you can do more than a 1000 different of them by using colors curving tools drills everything you can imagine! I will wait for news from you ! Have a great day my friend !

    I like how the grain bled through the white. I haven't used this stain recipe before. Can you neutralize the acid and keep the color? Consider some iridescent mica powder sometime. I haven't worked with that either, but it could be interesting. It is neutral.

    • @2300Kenzie

      @@KostasAnnikasDeftereos Sorry. I have a chemistry background. Vinegar contains an acid (acetic acid). It causes the iron in the wool to become black and dissolve into the liquid. However there should still be some acid left in the solution after the chemical reaction. This can react with other things such as additives to a finish. To neutralize the acid, you can add a very tiny amount of lye and then baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or just more baking soda. The acid is neutralized and the pH will be close to 7 (similar to water).
      I was mostly wondering if having a dried acid might cause the color to change later or react to things on the surface of the platter. Humidity could start a reaction. This is a minor issue and probably not worth all the speculation. The platter is still great.

    • @2300Kenzie
      @2300Kenzie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KostasAnnikasDeftereos Don't worry. It is a mild acid and will probably not continue to react. The reaction with the steel wool would possibly use up all or most of the ions. The acid won't bother the wood itself. The reaction is limited to the amount of vinegar. I was just wondering that if you put too much vinegar id it worth it to stop the reaction by putting sodium bicarbonate to stop any remaining reaction. That is the problem of working in a chemical or research laboratory. You think about minutia too much. Your platters should be fine.

      I am not sure brother but you can use first some tea on wood so you can rise the tannins of the wood and be darker when you apply the solution!

    Dude...don’t seal the lid on the vinegar wool solution. It pressurizes and could explode. Leave the lid slightly open to allow gas to escape.
