That's why I don't get why the same people bash on Epiphone. They are the same Les Pauls, same design, same materials. Only very slight detailed differences that have 0 effect on playability and sound, which is the reason you're getting a guitar in the first place anyways. And with all that Gibson hardware and tuners you're still getting it $4k less. Flamingo is totally right and spot on with his assessments. People are idiots.
Rather spot on. I, for one, don't see any problem with what they're doing here. They had an absolutely massive gap in price, they did what everyone said they should do, and they're closing that gap real fast with these. I'm probably going to get the ES-355, because that's a spectacular deal for that.
Few people seem to realize that the $1399 Epi's are the $800 model + Gibson pickups ($300-$500) + good electronics (~$20) and a hard case (~$200). All that mostly adds up to the price of the individual parts. They are charging more...but giving you more as well. I got one of those Kirk Hammet V's recently and it's a great guitar.
yeah I don't really have an issue with the price. Sure it's a lot for us average joes but Epiphone still has perfectly good quality guitars at pretty much every price point for those who don't want to fork over $1400.
@@toastertoaststoast Agree. It's not like they made the less expensive models worse. If anything they probably benefit from the higher production standards the more expensive models have. AFAIK they all come from the same factory line. You can totally get a made in japan Ibanez for the same price though.
Myself I would buy the the Standard models , the new ones are too much . I really wanted the Gibson LP tribute but they are now out of production. I really like the new Epiphone Flying Vs😊
funny thing is ... the people who are complaining are the hobbyists, I bet. I've got loops on Splice right now that were done on a early 2000's Squire affinity Tele (cost me $200ish band new back then) that I put duncan little '59s in. Same "cheap" axe is still paying me every quarter from TV placements. Guys (hobbyists), truth is just what he's saying in this video...the only thing that really matters is how the guitar makes you feel as you play it. Great video man! Subbed
I have purchased 2 Epiphones this year (a Marty Schwartz 335 and a Les Paul Studio). The LP was $550 and the 335 was $750 (Normally the 335s are $900, but this one was reduced since the case had a scuff). Both are wonderful guitars. I purchased 3 different Epiphones in 2020 during the pandemic, wasn't impressed with the sound quality, and ended up returning all 3. I then purchased a 2021 Tangerine Burst Gibson LP studio which I really liked for $1500. After discovering the Marty Schwartz 335 (I love the sound and feel of big body semi-hollows), I decided to try one out and was blown away at how much better the sound and quality of Epiphone guitars had become in just the last few years. At the same time, Gibsons have steadily increased in price until they have simply become too expensive for me to even think about owning. I have wanted a Gibson 335 for a few years now, but $3700 is just ridiculous. The 355's are even more. BUT, now that Epiphone has an Inspired By Gibson / Custom Shop 355 in white for $1299 with a case, my mouth is salivating again. I've watched a slew of videos on it and tried one out in person last week. The quality and sound are simply amazing, so I've decided to pick one up very soon. The $1300 is not something I even thing about. A Gibson BB King Lucille 355 is now $7k. Oh, the pain. Gibson has become the brand for CEO's who have too much money, and want something pretty to put under glass in their office to stare at all day. Bars and venues have cut back on what they pay gigging musicians lately, and TH-cam and Music on Demand sites are a long slow slog towards financial independence. Earning enough to afford a real Gibson these days requires a lot of belt tightening and pain. This is where the IBG Epiphone line is helping musicians afford quality guitars on a budget. They are still selling the $400-$700 entry level Epiphones, so no one has been hurt by not being able to afford a decent entry level guitar. The people who seem to be upset are the ones that have paid $2000-$5000 for a Gibson (guitar name here), and are now afraid the high end Epiphones will undercut their Gibson investment. That may be so, as I recently sold that Gibson Tangerine LP Studio for a $700 loss recently. Guitars aren't selling right now (new or used), and people are looking for value in their instrument - and don't care about resale because there IS NO RESALE. So with that being the case, isn't the smart bet to buy a Epiphone with Gibson Custom Shop parts for 1/3 the price of 'the real thing'? I guess if you are made of money, you'll disagree, but if you're a gigging musician like myself, you just want the best guitar for the lowest price and highest quality you can get - and at this moment, that's Epiphone's IBG Custom Shop line for $1300.
These new 1959's come stock with CUSTOMBUCKER pickups! A major upgrade to the already stellar Burstbuckers! Custombuckers are $500 a set! Putting those in and only raising the price from $999 to $1299 is not out of this world. On top of the much better pickups, they also now have a ONE PIECE NECK! People need to stop complaining! I love where Epiphone is going and will be buying the new 59 when the Iced Tea burst is released.
Indian laurel fretboard, poly finish… disappointing. you better buy a used Gibson traditional or standard if you find a good deal for 1300$… We do not complain, YES we do want the quality of a Gibson in an epiphone, but at Epiphone made in China price!!
@@Electric.Flamingo My comment wasn't directed at you. It was the people who are complaining that the prices went up when premium features they asked for were added.
Most guitar companies use CNC machines to make their guitars. There's nothing wrong with that. Hand-made stuff is a bit overrated. It's cool, but if I can have a machine do it right every single time and pay a decent price versus a cool story if a dudes hand slips and makes a funny mark, which somehow adds another $1000 to the price, give me the CNC machine made thing all day.
@@markwilliamsmusic2987I own an inspired by Gibson Flying V it’s a good value. I wouldn’t spend 1200 bucks on it. I did spend 1200 on a GIBSON Les Paul Tribute. There’s value there.
Merlin: I give to you the secrets of the universe...... just type in this code and they'll all be yours. People: Pfffft.... that's a lot of work with your code typing there sir.
I have two recently built Epiphones. One is a red Broadway, and the other is a 150th Anniversary Sheraton. Both of them are very well made guitars. I struggle to find a flaw with either. They play great. I'm happy with the price I paid for them. The Chinese factories making these guitars have really stepped up their game over the years and are now competing very well with USA & Japanese builds. My first experience with Epiphone guitars goes back to 2008 and the Chinese guitars left a lot to be desired. There is a night & day difference these days.
No hate here. Used EPI's / MIM Strats $400; for most would last a lifetime. You make very good points, I never complained about my $500 Epiphones. Always thought they were fine, never a problem and headstock shape? Who cares?? My latest epi is a used Traditional Pro II for $400- it's great, really great.
No complaints here about the direction of Epiphone with the inspired by Gibson line. The CustomBucker pickups alone are worth $500. Placing these pickups in a guitar under 2k is awesome imo. It's not like Epiphone has abandoned their entire lineup. So, if you want a more budget friendly Epi, there's plenty to choose from. But, if you want the Gibson hardware and the incredible CustomBucker pickups at a cost significantly less than Gibson's counterparts, what's not to love? Way to go Epiphone. I'll be happy to hang a 1959 ES355 Epiphone inspired by Gibson next to my 1964 Gibson ES335 VOS reissue.
All these upgrades are "value added" costs to increase perceived value. Cost of Gibson headstock vs Epi? $0. Cost of CTS pots & Switch craft parts? $30. Upgraded pickups? ??
I'm an Epiphone guy myself. After 20+ years with Epis, I just got my first Gibson Les Paul. Definitely not complaining. Great guitar the pickups alone are impressive. But I'll be honest if these new Epiphone IBGCs were out then, I would not have bought the Gibson. But I'll wait for them to start popping up used. Then I'll grab me a white Les Paul Custom.
Man, you are the only one in youtube who speaks the truth, Gibson and Epi fans are a wild beast, now that they have dropped the most Gibson-esque guitars people are saying that at this point you would much rather get a 10 year old used Gibson, WTF DO YOU WANT PEOPLE?!?!
Changing the shape of the headstock costs almost nothing, just some tweaks on the machines at the factory. Pots? It probably costs them a few dollars for upgraded pots. Pickups mostly cost the same to produce unless they are handwound ECT. I don't even think Gibson's pickups are hand wound anymore. Does anyone think that these upgrades warrant the prices they are charging now? Personally I would never buy an Epiphone these days when you can get better guitars from other import brands for less money.
I agree, you get what you pay for. My concern is that as the Epiphone prices increase and Gibson only doing reissues and special editions, I am worried we will never see a Gibson regular production run of a V or Explorer or Firebird. The higher end Epiphone has taken that slot with price point and features, just not usa made.
That's similar with many industries though. The cheapest and also the most expensive do well. Businesses caught in the middle without that clear value identity can get chewed up sometimes. Not like Gibson USA has a stellar reputation for quality anyways. id rather have the Ep if released and save the cash.
@@ScottsGuitar You bring up quality control issues like it was yesterday when it was years ago! Do you seriously believe that the Chinese give a shit about if that guitar they made is quality or not? Just you wait, sooner or later a bunch of crap from Epiphone will hit the shelves once again and I’m almost certain the excuses of it being “less expensive so it’s normal” Will roll out with it!
@@werewolflover8636 probably. But that wasn’t really my point. QC on Gibson USA can be just as shotty, and there are better middle tier options for the money. So you might as well buy an Epi and upgrade the hardware and get a pro setup/fret level. I gig a couple Murphy labs, so I won’t be holding my breath for any Epi guitars in the future personally. My personal pick for lower tier would be buy a PRS SE over just about any other Brand.
I think you are right about saying that the people complaining to have more for less! I brought 2 Epiphone guitars in later years, one like yours, the 50's inspired by Gibson in Gold top and a magnificent 335 with the licensed Bigsby last year and both are very good guitars. But I think that those new models look very gorgeous!I also think that the price they ask for the new models is fair with the things they add, like the best pick-ups and the case, it's worth the price! I will wait when the price go lower but don't need that for now and I will go with the Les Paul Custom, also a part of the new line. Just a little mistake in your video, it's not a 335 in the new line, it's a 355, the equivalent of the Les Paul Custom in the ES line. Good video, very interesting! 😎
I agree with you. Especially with the trend of price increases before these came out. Glad I got my Epis when I did. Sure, I'd love a Gibson Custom shaped/looking headstock. I fully expected higher prices. As long as financing is available, people will keep buying
It’s so nice to be able to have this kind of discussion. I live in Brazil, and things are crazy for us guitar players here, so sometimes it’s hard to fully grasp the point of the video. For example, the minimum wage here is around 1,400 reais, which is about 250 dollars per month. A simple used Gibson guitar costs up to 12,000 reais due to taxes and other factors. So, a young guitarist would have to save all their income for over a year just to afford a used Gibson. Therefore, if, as mentioned in the video, a Gibson, Fender, or PRS-which are all brands known for making very well-built guitars-costs up to 1,500 dollars, and the minimum wage in the USA is around 1,200 dollars per month, we Brazilians can’t understand why you wouldn’t save your money for the real deal: great pickups, solid construction, and good resale value.
Much like anywhere else, it's hard to save money. Inflation and greed is ruining this country economically. $1,200 a month ain't shit. That's not even enough to cover rent in some places right now.
@@Electric.Flamingo This is very sad to hear! It seems that as prices increase, the quality of products tends to decline. Focusing on instruments, in particular, newer guitars are becoming increasingly expensive. To cut costs and maintain market share, manufacturers are using cheaper woods, lowering build quality, and so on. We must hope for a better future, not only for our hobbies but also for the economy in general.
Agree with you completely. Got an Epiphone Les Paul Custom (2020 model), after hearing all the great reviews, last year. Cost me £600 and love it. They were awful back in the early 90's (couple of friends had them), but I'd thought they'd found their sweet spot. Prices are crazy with the new models though. You don't need expensive Gibson pickups jacking up the price. I think the ProBuckers sound great.
The only thing that I'm scratching my head on, is why they didn't use the Gibson style bridge for the '79 AJ and the Les Paul custom like the rest of the range. They did every other model, including the korina Explorer and Flying V. I'll still probably pick up a used one down the line and convert it myself.
I immediately jumped on the new Epiphone LP Custom at the full $1299 price. Childhood dream fulfilled. I've wanted a Gibson LP Custom in Alpine White after getting to play one for about 10 minutes back in 1998. I always thought I'll get one when Im an adult but you I can't justify the price as a hobby guitarist. I tried the different variations of Epiphone's LP Customs and they're wonderful but they looked and felt like their own thing and not THE thing. The 2020+ model was really really close, but I never could pull the trigger. This release hits all the high notes with the updated neck shape, open book headstock, pearl inlays, gibson pickups, and hard shell case. This premium lets me mark the LP Custom off my bucket list. It shows up on Friday and we'll find out if it actually meets my expectations, but I think it's going to be perfect. I can take the $4k I saved and get a Epiphone Greeny and 59 Standard.. and still have more money burning a hole in my pocket.
I am in the same boat, I have been looking at ES-355 Custom Shop for a while but cannot justify the price as a hobby guitarist, mine suppose to arrive today too. I hope it meets my expectations and that yours does the same for you.
@@PicoDePaulo If you asking me, it is a nice guitar, I did not see tool marks on the fretboard (maybe they are harder to see because it uses ebony wood), the guitar was nicely setup (could be the shop but I doubt it). The neck is chunky but not enormous. One criticism about the VOS finish is that there is an edge to the finish where it meets with the binding; I think they masked the binding when spraying the finish so this left an edge; it did not affect the playing but you notice it when touching, it may reduces with time as the guitar get played over months and years. I did not get to play it much because it ships with 10s and I use 9s so gave it to my guitar tech to check frets, set the guitar up for 9s and fix any other issues that comes with new guitars; he has a long waiting list so will get the guitar back next month...
@@PicoDePauloThat’s right. Thats the first one I grabbed. In Alpine White. I can’t get enough of it. Next up - the ES-355 in Ebony. Arriving on 05/27/2024. Update: 05/17/2024!👍🏼
@pharmerdavid1432 I agree. Just played one. I own 4 Gibsons and the 355 feels and sounds great. Couldn't find a flaw on it. 1 of my Gibsons has many cosmetic flaws.
I got the 1959 ES 355 for £1199 and it really is an amazing guitar and in my opinion worth the money. My only complaint is that the frets were sharp and even cut into my finger so I had to file quite a few of them. Overall even at the price it is one of the best guitars I have ever played and I recommend it highly. The frets should be properly finished at this price.
My only concern with these new Epis is the neck. It's a one-piece, as opposed to a scarf joint like on the older Epis. If they use the same grade of wood and cut it the same way Gibson cuts theirs, it's got less chance of warping/twisting. However, if it's softer, less dense wood, I wouldn't even bother. Otherwise, a guitar that's basically a Gibson with a different word on it for thousands less? I'm in.
Amen…. Finally someone speaking truth and not just complaining. I totally understand that Epiphone has no interest competing with Harley benton, they want to be premium in their market. You want cheaper, get a freaking HB.
For me, I just prefer the real thing, Gibson LP 60s and ES 339. I always take resale value into consideration whenever I invest in a guitar. Gibson, Fender USA, and PRS USA seem to have the best retentive value.
If the pickups don't matter and the wood doesn't matter what does matter? If you can't hear the difference, it might be your ears not discerning the difference in frequency response. I will grant you the amp and even more the speaker have a massive influence on what you hear but the signal from the guitar is the tone generator. I do agree that better guitars cost more. 1299 is not bad for a nice 335. A used gibson studio model will be $2K on the low side and come with issues.
Let talk about the $1500 Sg Custom the Original issue in 1999 was $420 for the guitar + $330 for 3 gold 57 classics + $100 for a case = $850 which equals $1593 in todays money. That didn't include CTS pots , Ebony fretboard or real Mother of Pearl inlay or a Gibson headstock .
I own a John Lee Hooker Epiphone reissue. I don't want it to look like a Gibson because this model never was a Gibson model. As for people comparing Gibson and Epiphones, well the brand's marketing is based on that equation. It stems from the choice of models in their catalogue: SG, LP, etc.
i own several gibson les pauls ranging from a studio to a standard and i have to admit that the LPC looks pretty awesome. ive always wanted one but i cant justify 5 to 6k on a single guitar but 1299 is pretty tempting. the current $799 model was a pretty good guitar(neck was too thin for me) but this new one has alot of nice features
I never thought I would pay this much for an EPI, but I bought the Joe B red SG last year and I LOVE that guitar and play it almost every day. It's worth the price to me. I don't expect to regularly pay that price for an SG, but I have no complaints.
The only disappointing aspect of the new range is the Indian laurel fingerboards. I saw on an andertons video that they said their example was darker than usual but I think at that price they have to make an effort to stain/darken the Indian laurel if they refuse to offer rosewood. In my opinion, laurel fretboards can really kill the look of a neck. I'd rather have ebony on a LP standard than laurel, even if it looks wrong.
I’m getting back into guitar after 10 years… my dream guitar was always a Gibson ES-335. Now, Epiphone has a 335 style guitar with Gold plated hardware, one piece mahogany 50s style neck, Ebony fretboard, mother of pearl inlay, extended tortoise pick guard, premium electronics WITH Custombuckers, and a $150/+ hard case for $1299… I personally don’t understand how someone could think that’s a bad deal. For me I was almost shocked when I discovered it as it had pretty much everything I love about the nice 335/355s but without the $5K+ price tag. Is it a Gibson?? No. But it’s close and there’s no way in hell I’d pay $4K+ MORE for a Gibson version of the same guitar, even if I had that kind of money lmao
I gave up on les pauls after graduating through all Gibsons up to a custom shop R0. Just didn't play them enough...too heavy an un-lapfriendly. Saw a '59 Epi for $900 recently and bought it because I had to know why an epi is $900. Absolutely loved it and bought a second one in a different color. Just ordered the 355 ($1300) and cannot wait to get it. Epiphone has hit a HOMERUN here. Not sure if that speaks to their profit margins on them since these may be intro lost-leaders, but the buyers will certainly come once they experience what I have. I suspect these Epiphone "elite" guitars will soon be considered equivalent to eastmans, prs S2s etc.
I agree 100% with one exception: It doesn't cost anything more to rout the headstock to a slightly different shape. Electronics, detail on the bindings, sure, costs in time and materials, but shaping the headstock differently, no difference in time or materials. For me, the Kalamazoo headstock is fine, but no one can convince me it cost more to do any more than the Gibson traditional shape would cost. And I figure the lawyers are getting paid either way.
Preach it! I like the idea Epiphone gave the option with the case and PUPS hell of a deal IMO, if they continue with an affordable line then basically they are doing the Fender\Squire thing.
I got the new 59 Epiphone ES335 and it's blowing me away! Gibson pickups and the headstock is worth it alone, but they also have great binding and at 1299 honestly it's a great deal! got mine for around 1,000. A new Gibson ES335 is what? like 4 grand?!
I think that most of the people complaining didn't try them out. The same people will buy a $1300 phone though lol. Epiphone is not holding a gun to your head, you don't have to buy it lol. I like what Epiphone is doing and I own 4) Gibsons and one Epiphone that I kept and upgraded it. Now they have the proper headstock, electronics, parts, MOP inlays, and the list goes on. I might even go for that Epiphone ES-355 in white! it has custombuckers in it! The only other guitar that I own that has that is my Gibson Custom Shop R8 for much much more money. You don't have to be a fanboy of anything, If I like it I'll buy it. As long as we play guitars is all that matters.
I'll pay extra for the open book headstock everyday of the week. That's what I asked for and I'm very happy that they listened. I absolutely hate the old headstock. I refuse to buy the old guitars because of the headstock. Basically they're finally selling what I want to buy. What's the purpose in spending less money on a guitar that I don't really get excited over?
I think the main reason why people are upset is because Epiphone seems to refuse to put the Gibson headstock on the 600 dollar models for some reason. I think most people don't really need the improved specs like the Gibson pickups, wood, bridge and all that as there seems to be no shortage of players I see online saying good things about the specs of the 2020 inspired by Gibson models, like the 50s you shown in the video, even though they use less expensive components. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think shaping the laurel necks to have a Gibson headstock shouldn't really constitute as using "better quality" components, it's just a different shape (that they already have so no need for a redesign), thus shouldn't add much if at all to the manufacturing cost. Now the only way they could get a Gibson headstock is if they're willing to pay for those other upgrades as well which they don't really ask for. So I can get the feeling that people are somewhat feeling like they have their hands tied. It's just not an answer for the problem of "I want a Gibson headstock on my Epiphone". I think if Epiphone decides to update the 2020 models with Gibson headstocks but with the exact same specs they have now, people would be really happy with that. Also the reason why I keep banging on about the headstock is because I feel like no one else changes the shape of their headstocks for their budget brands. Squier has Fender headstocks, PRS still has the same looks on their budget models to their more expensive ones, so Epiphone's insistence on not putting it on their guitars is a bit frustrating. If they want to put their own headstock, they have plenty of models they could do that with, like the Casino or Riviera. Idk for me that's the only issue that the current Epiphones have, but I might be wrong so feel free to debate me on these points.
Back awhile I was of the opinion that hell will freeze over before I pay that for a epiphone but now I'm feeling differently. I want the Epiphone Les Paul 59 in the Iced Tea burst....oh it's gorgeous. Custombuckers, real Mother of Pearl Inlays, long neck tenon and the right headstock. Hell must have gotten chilly lol
I have a 2023 sg custom and it is my dream guitar but the fret work is horrible, marks and unevenness that I had to fix. Epiphone is very special to me, I will probably buy the es 355. I like many of the things they are achieving, but I hate that buying one of their guitars is still a lottery.
Epiphone could at least use birch and pine wood and then make the Les Paul body with the correct 2 inch body thickness. Also with the Epiphone Les Paul they need to sculpt the lower cutaway horn correctly.
Yup, the new Custom Les Paul is exactly what I wanted them to make.....490R/498T pickups. ebony board, Gibby headstock, C neck profile and a hard case. Yet, I'm still debating whether to pull the trigger and buy one.
Thank you for saying what I have saying for a long time. All pickups sound very similar when running thru overdrive distortion etc...... nothing bugs me more then a guitar demo that just plays the guitar distorted. I don't play metal or heavy rock and I want to hear the pickup tone clean. As for pricing, everything is getting expensive. I love epiphone and own 2 of them. One from 1992 and the other from 2018. They both are great instruments.
A GIBSON wont make you a Better Player if your Playing an Epiphone ! A New $1200 Epiphone or a $2500 Gibson Your Standard of Playing will be Exactly SAME...All you will Gain is a Little Gibson Logo & Probably a Better Resale Value
For me, looking at the 1959 ES-355, I think it is worth it; the actual Gibson Custom Shop equivalent is +£6000, Epiphone sells the guitar which has the same electronics, the same hardware, the same body specs (single piece neck, ebony fretboard and what else), with a hardcase but with a poly finish and made in their Chinese factory (which has been making guitars for nearly 20 years) for £1200. To upgrade a new Epiphone dot (ES-335 at around £600) to these specs, it would cost me £500 to £600 (with me doing the installation). Because of this, IMO, the price makes sense, sure it costs less for Epiphone to upgrade a guitar in the factory but they are a business and their goal is to make money. You cannot please everyone all the time, some people will not be happy about it and that is their right, other will be happy to get the equivalent to a £6000 guitar for £1200, to each their own.
You all should see the prices here in Australia if you think $1200-$1500 is expensive. The Adana jones Epiphone with Gibson headstock is $3000 and the new Dave Grohl is $2800. Most of the normal range of Epiphone’s like the standards are $1200 now and studios around $900-$1000
I actually thought the new line is too cheap. They all have Custombuckers in them don't they? 500 € only for the Pickups? The normal 335 has a price of 600 €. Add the Pickups you are already at 1100 then add the one piece neck, the fancy Inlays, the Headstock, that's an easy 200 € and they come with a case 100-150€. So in my opinion they could have easily priced the new 355 at 1600 and people would have still bought them. Thomann (biggest seller in Europe) is already out of stock.
Completely agree about the funny response. Better parts will up the price. It's common sense. I'm a Gibson/Epiphone fan at the end of the day. So I'm fine with the upgrades. I'll play'em and love'em
Perfect take. New sub here! I’ve been preaching these same points to the ignoramuses in the Facebook groups. I own vintage Gibsons, Fenders, etc and once I saw the specs and price on that new ES-355, I ordered one without hesitation. I’ve purchased a number of KZ headstock Epis over the last 4 years and if it’s as good as those, I’ll feel great. I bet it is.
I think the new Epiphones are very cool. Especially for the price. And the fact that they have Gibson pickups and electronics in them. $1300 isn't really unreasonable. I have to disagree about the pickups not mattering. If you switch out the pickups whether you have $600 Epiphone or the $1300 one with a set of Seymour Duncans you will notice the difference. Especially in the $600 one with the Epiphone pickups.
If they up the pricing on other models that dont have 2024 refresh yet, there will no longer be any point in getting Epiphone. Not when they reach Edwards pricepoint. PRS SE will be cheaper or better value. And then there is Sire sticking to the 500-700 sweetspot.
I think what they are doing with the new Epiphone is cool AF. It's cost a bit more but it's a better guitar and locally I can afford to have the fretboard replaned and refretted with SS for $275 Plus around $20 for the frets. Better bridge , pickups and a nice case. I can't see spending $3000 on a Gibson with nickel/silver frets just to refret with SS.
I agree about your point that people were complaining about Epi headstock and other parts like the bridge, and when they got it they now complain about the exorbitant price. I feel tne price is attrocious and should be $999-$1500 Canadian and not $1299-$2100 Canadian for the Adam Jones model. People need to stop paying these ridiculous prices and stop feeding this frenzy. Quality guitars are Epiphones theres no doubt there.
Problem is, people will continue to buy and the prices won't drop. They will just go up and up until they are basically what lower end Gibsons were 10 years ago.
There is something to be said about not wanting to pay over $1000 bucks for an import guitar but this is something ESP, Schecter and all the other manufacturers have already been doing. Epiphone is essentially Gibsons import line. Its a Gibson without the name on the headstock. Gibson just doesn't want to put their name on anything but their premium usa models that cost 4 times more, which makes the Chinese models look pretty reasonable price wise. And with the same electronics, mop inlays, and hardware as the more expensive Gibson USA models, and comes with the open book headstock and a hardshell case, 1300 is a pretty reasonable price. Give it a nice set up and it will be worth every penny and sound just as good as the one with the name on the headstock that cost 4 times as much.
That is true, except ESP/LTD and Schecter typically use South Korea and Indonesia for their higher end import guitars. Had they produced these over there, I don't think they would be facing nearly as much pricing backlash imo. Jackson is getting similar heat too, for selling Chinese made $1500-1700 Soloists. Crazy, considering you can buy an American one for only $600 more....
Spot on, you get what you pay for. Buy a cheap guitar, you get a cheaply made guitar. I own 50 guitars, mostly Gibson. But even I know a good value, when I see one. If people complain that it isn't a Gibson, guess what? It's never going to be a Gibson. I just saw a guy complaining about the price of $1299, for the Epiphone Korina Explorer (for the record, I bought one). He says, I can buy a Gibson Explorer for $200-$300 more. I reminded him that while that is true, he can't buy a Gibson, Korina bodied Explorer with 1958 Specs, for a couple of hundred dollars more... That will cost him $8,700 more @ $9,999. Some people just lack any critical thinking skills. Instead of looking at what they are getting for their money, all they see is the price. As for the one's that complain, "but, it's an Epiphone"... my advice to them, since they just want a name brand on their gear... don't buy an Epiphone... you'll never be happy, because the quality of the instrument, doesn't matter to you... only the name on it. The same goes for amplifiers... if you're buying because of a name, you're buying for the wrong reasons. I own Marshall, Peavey and many other name-brand amps... I play Ceriatone Amplifiers.
I think you are missing a point a bit. Epiphone can be a good sounding guitar but will still feel cheap. Thick poly finish, not resonant bodies and heavy. I would take any day of the week LP Tribute over Decked out Epi Greeny. You can get 2 used Tributes for Greeny. But when it comes to standards for imports, for example I have Revstar RSS02T and this is what I expect in a range of 700-800 bucks. I owned some mid to higher end Epiphones and they are nowhere close.
Epiphone should enjoy the different budget areas they have. Inspired by Gibson and inspired by custom shop qc control and enjoyment of protecting the customer and giving a good product.
I agree with you 100% about the complaining… I don’t understand it. However, I am a fan of the new models. I think the price makes perfect sense. The new 355 for example; has Grovers, open book headstock, ebony fingerboard, real pearl inlays, and $400 Gibson pick ups…. So in my opinion, the price makes sense. I would pay that. The other thing I would mention is that it’s not like they took the old Epiphones away. So again, the complaining makes no sense to me? The great guitars that Epiphone has always offered at their normal price points are still there, yet everyone is laser focused on their new (premium) models which are meant to satisfy the Gibson fanboys. In short, they now have something for everyone… So rather than get upset, it’s a reason to praise Epiphone for having something great for every player at any budget.
Please don't make those sound effects so loud. They're like 3 times louder than you speaking. Gibson/Epi can charge whatever they want for their guitars. There's definitely a market for the more expensive Epiphones. But people who don't care about the whole Gibson thing as much are probably out and will go for something like a PRS SE. 6:22 If you play a modern amp, yes. If you play a 800 or plexi the output of the pickup is extremely important. A PAF compared to a Super Distortion or X2N will make a difference as big as entire music genres. That X2N is so hot that you don't even need pedals anymore.
Well said about everything you said! The Sweetwater price of $699 for the 50's LP is a great deal! Thats $999 Canadian & in the ballpark as where it should be.
Absolutely. They are reasonably priced and sit perfectly where they should. While I do feel the higher priced things fill some sort of gap, they just aren't for me (right now at least) lol
@@Electric.Flamingo I agree completely. Used one will be popping up in a year or two and will be great deals to be had. I'm patient that way lol. Tbats how Ive ammassed about 20 guitars lol.🤘
@dragan4658 I very seldom buy new. I bought two Epiphones new last year, my 50s Standard and Bluespower and then the PRS SE CE, but other than that, I'm always looking used. Tremendous deals to be had if you're patient and these will be no exception at some point!
Great post! I own a number of Epi's! Fan boy maybe but the guitars make me happy! Got the older Prophecy explorer in Red with emg 81 and 85 in it. Have the Epi Joe Perry Boneyard les paul with actual Gibson burstbucker 2 and 3 pickups. and i went and bought an epi les paul custom with the Kalamazoo head last month. All are great, well built guitars
I dig the new direction.. I was the guy who would buy the cheaper Gibsons instead of Epi.. With the new 59, I think I'd actually consider buying it. (they seem to sound fukn great too)
You raise some good points here. It’s funny, many are against paying Gibson prices BUT are more than happy to pay near Gibson prices for a top of the range Epiphone. I have both Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls. The neck on the Gibson is much more comfortable (50s standard vs Epi Slim taper). Pickup wise, I actually prefer the Probuckers over the Burstbuckers. Both get equal play time depending on my mood and what I’m doing. Hopefully with the release of these new Epiphones, I can bag a pre 2020 custom for cheeeeeeap 😊 Play more, GAS less 😎
I don't agree with you. Fender offers a mexican made Player/Player plus/Vintera for roughly the same price as those epiphones but they have the parent brand's name on the headstock, CTS pots, etc. If Fender can do it, so can Gibson/Epiphone...and Fender isn't even using far east asian manufacturing.
You’re speaking what I’ve been thinking! You got me to subscribe to your channel because of this video. If people want a Gibson then save your pennies people and buy a Gibson. Epiphone will never be Gibson, it’s not meant to be. Epiphone is your Toyota and Gibson is your Lexus, deal with it people.
I play both Gibsons and Epiphones. I just bought another Epi just last week, a Lifeson model for $1,100 and it's worth every penny. The Gibson branded one is $5,500 for the same model. Epiphone too expensive, I don't think so...
Epiphone had really improved its quality. I’m looking at the new ES-335. But Gibsons are better in the sense that they are made from higher quality woods and there’s a higher level of craftsmanship. Gibsons also have a better “feel” in terms of the neck, fingerboard, and body. I think you would have to be an advanced player with experience on different guitars to notice, however. In the past, Epiphone was generally targeted at beginners. They now seem to also be targeting professional working musicians with their new models. These guitars play well and sound great, but the player isn’t going to have a heart attack if his Epiphone falls off its stand or gets damaged in transit.
While I agree with you with the wood argument, the level of craftsmanship argument is not so true (Custom Shop guitar excluded), they use the same processes in both factories, labour cost is vastly different, it is not that they cannot make the same guitar, is that the Chinese factory has to produce more guitars so workers spend less time on each guitar. The number of successful musicians that use Epiphone guitars speaks for the quality of their guitars (Jared James Nichols comes to mind).
Im okay with a $1200 Epiphone i have been eyeballing one the 335's for a few years now, ever since I picked up a 50th Anniversary Casino I have really enjoyed the shape. But... if I get an iced tea burst 335. he a case. then i decide to upgrade the pickups and wiring harness and then havve to pay someone to assemble it because I made a mess with the soldering iron... That new 1959 335 really makes sense to me
You are correct. Great guitars for the price can’t be beat. And I agree get past the pickups they are great and distorted no one can tell if they are honest. So buy and enjoy 😉
There was a huge hole between 600$ Epi and 2500$ Gibson. There's a big market in that hole. Each budget has an option with that brand now. These new Epiphone will be in the same range as Japanese guitars now. Clever. Fender already had the Mexican range for that.
That's true. I don't really have a problem with it, as long as the brand maintains its accessibility to those of us who like that under $1000 to $1000 mark.
Who actually thinks they should get an Epiphone with all the works for $500? No one who’s reasonable thinks these new guitars should be $500. I get that people are unreasonable sometimes but at the end of the day the most this criticism is valid considering how much guitar prices have inflated over the years. The price of these new epiphones only look good because they inflated the heck out of the regular Epiphones for a few years before this. Like for example the original 59s with the regular Epiphone headstock use to cost $800 a couple years ago but now they cost $1,000. Don’t get me wrong these new epiphones are pretty amazing and I really want one but the price should be a little lower than what it is. At the end of the day these are great guitars but I just feel like you’re paying more than you should. If these were like $200 less than I think they would be more reasonable. I just really hope the factory workers are getting raises because all that money from inflating these prices has to go somewhere.
When you were talking about the used GIbson market you glossed over the fact(intentionally or not)that Gibson's not only hold their value, they mostly appreciate in value. Epiphones will not. That's a big deal. Also, I think a lot of us look at the '59 Standard Kit that Epiphone released a few years back: You can get those brand new for $750 with Burstbuckers and Gibson electronics. Just because Gibson sells the Custombuckers for $500 doesn't mean they're worth it lol.
If it didn’t say Epiphone but was made in the far east, would $1200 be too much for a 355 style with $500 pickups, CTS pots, Mallory capacitors, switchcraft switches/input jack ebony fret board real MOP inlays bound headstock with real MOP inlays, one piece mahogany neck and a hardshell case, folk wouldn’t bat an eye at the price.
@@werewolflover8636 the best playing guitar I’ve ever played and the only guitar I’ve ever regretted selling was a 2012 Squier classic vibe 50’s, weak pickups but fit and finish and playability was 1st rate,
3:04 Meanwhile Jackson JS22 guitars are $300 and are that.... Like assuming Gibson getting good prices on the stuff thyey put on guitars/make them in house... Why not put the good stuff in budget guitars and just make less profit you know like Jackson does? Like Gibsons are vastly over priced and now are epiphones they don't have to be.
The only people complaining are beginner guitarist that have never spec'd out guitar parts or construction labor IMHO. It seems like these critics only really wanted the $500-$700 range Epiphone guitars with Gibson's open book headstocks, and Gibson/Epiphone might very well do that one day, but these guitars are not that.
100%. They are clearly trying to fill a gap in their market right now and it clearly is working. It would be cool to see the headstock on the more affordable things at some point, but I've never been bothered by it myself.
So man, love the video and just subscribed as a result. Although I agree with the general idea of what you are pointing out (I think), I am not entirely sold on the Epi strategy. I didnt think of myself as a complainer until I watched your video. I have been leaving comments to the tune of WTF Epiphone??? Let me first say that I am an Epiphone fan. I have two very special Epiphone guitars. I also have 3 Gibson Les Pauls so I know the difference. Here is where I sit with the recent offerings by Epiphone - I think they are moving a bit out of their lane and I really feel like its by Gibson design. Gibson prices are blowing up and it feels like the Epiphone pricing is going up to somewhat validate paying Gibson prices. Now, this is complex of course because its more expensive to build guitars in general just based on inflation (not a political statement - just the current reality), and Epiphone is upgrading these higher end guitars in their line - but - at the end of the day, they are still Epiphone guitars. As an example, I bought a Epiphone 61 reissue Les Paul SG (with the Gibson collab upgrades). I paid about $750 for it (discounted) 2 years ago. They are now $950 new - no change to the guitar, just a flat out blow up in pricing. I would be lucky to get $600 for it used. On the other hand, I sold a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Studio that was $850 new for $1100. Here's the rub - I am finding that the price increase is just not worth it regardless of the upgrades because the dont age well in terms of value. I thought the Epi Greeny was actually genius - Signature guitar with Greeny pickups AND the open book headstock - ok, unique, special, maybe worth it - now all the new releases have the open book which just dilutes the uniqueness. Love the video man and look forward to catching up on your content and your future content - for me, I will wait out Facebook Marketplace and pickup one if these for half of retail. Cheers!
I'm happy with all of my Epiphones. Headstock shape and pickups be damned, they sound great! If Epiphone has become the Gibson equivalent of MIM Fender, will we be seeing a better Maestro equivalent to Squier?🤔
People will ALWAYS complain - period. Epiphones have come a LONG way, and to do that, they HAD to up the price. Over 30 years ago, my first guitar was an Epiphone flying V and let me tell you, it was JUNK. The body was almost pressed sawdust. These days, I've played a lot of Epiphones, and I'd gladly take one - if I didn't already have a Gibson from years ago. If I was looking for another Les Paul, I'd seriously look at an Epiphone just because I can't sell vital organs to buy a Gibson these days. All these "budget" guitars hurt the market, but let me tell you - you get what you pay for.
Here in Australia I can buy one of these new Epiphone Firebirds for $3300AUD (with Laurel fretboard lol) or easily jump onto Marketplace and find a second hand Gibson SG for around $2000, a Gibson Les Paul Standard for about $3000-$3500, a Gibson 335 for around $3500. All with Gibson on the headstock, beautiful Rosewood fingerboards, fret nibs, case candy, Made in USA. Buying second hand is the way better option these days especially with the joke prices that Epiphone are spewing out. Over $3k for laurel fretboards, come the fuck on.
The biggest problem is that with every upgrade and subsequent price increase, they get a *little* bit closer to the impressive spec list of other import brands, but *FURTHER* from those guitars' pricetags. While those competitors are giving better and better bang for the buck, while Epiphone's giving worse and worse bang for the buck. Don't give us $200 worth of upgrades for $500 extra. Don't even give us $200 worth of upgrades for $200 extra. Sweeten the pot a little. I'll bet money these new pricey Epis have better profit margins than the regular ones. And that's the problem. Also, it's obviously hyperbole when you say "you want an upgraded epi with gibson pickups and brand-name electronics for 500 bucks." No, I would want that for $1,000 or maybe $1,150. Not $1300. Not $1500. If you pose to your audience "y'all want an upgraded Epiphone with Gibson pickups and brand-name electronics for $1,000?!", I think the answer would be a resounding "yeah!", cuz that sounds downright reasonable to me. The Yim Yames signature, for example is $899. Now we're talking! They can do those prices. This is profiteering. This is increased profit margins. Again, I'll bet money on that. And we don't like that. We asked for better guitars, not worse value. We don't want 60% better guitars for 100% extra money. Import competitors are doing stuff like stainless frets, full-thickness maple caps, figured tops, ebony boards, high-end brand name pickups like Fishman/Nordstrand/Lundgren, locking tuners, Evertune bridges, easy-access neck heels, etc., for very reasonable prices. Their upgrades run circles around Epi's. The game has changed. They can't give us a few moderate upgrades and charge these kind of premiums. The market has blown past them. They may not want to touch those upgrades because they stick to more vintage-spec designs, but then stay outta that pricing league.
I don't care what name is on it, if it's a good guitar, I will play it. I think the Inspired by Gibson line was perfect, all the parts worked perfectly fine, and was still a budget players price. Now the guitar has everything BUT the name and it's not a budget players price anymore. I CALLED this years ago when people were begging for Gibson parts, shapes, etc. that if we keep doing this the price was gonna go up. NOW The Epiphone guitars are the price that Gibson guitars were a decade ago. Unbelievable.
They reprogrammed the CNC in China to change the headstock of this '59 everything else is the same as the older model and upped the price 57.97% to me that's just greed. I bought the Epiphones I have because I didn't see the value in a Gibson for my use of it, where I live that Epiphone '59 will be more expensive than some of the in stock Gibson studios. Sure prices are going up but that is a big jump for a different headstock that were I that concerned about (and I know others are) I'd have spent the extra money on the Gibson but I just play for fun in my house. The 5 Epiphones I have are enough anyway I guess.
To me, it just sounds like I'll be sticking to the used market for me Epis for the time being. These new ones will eventually end up there at a decent price. lol
Wasn't the previous Epiphone headstock functionally better though, with less aggressive D & G string angles for less tuning issues?
You are spot on. People will never be satisfied until the headstock says Gibson.
Exactly.
@@rockhaze exactly!
Wait.... But when it says Gibson on the Head stock they will now say that guitar cost too much ... Over price lol
@@michaelblaney4461 you can get the Tribute used. You don't have to buy it brand new. I have one. I like it.
funny thing is ... the people who are complaining are the hobbyists, I bet.
“I don’t get that mindset🤌” neither do i bro. The epi 59 is an awesome guitar and they’ve made them even better!
To each his own. I said I don't care what you play, if you're happy with it, fine. Just stop complaining when you get your way, was my point. 😂
You’re the problem.

Totally agree! Its worth noting that the standard line is also great. Lots of great options for all.
I hear you. That’s the first one I grabbed- in Alpine White.
This guy gets it. ⚡️🦩

Who knows. I just don't think the huge price hikes are worth it, but again after years of everyone complaining, it was bound to happen.
How did u find it?
@@dobiqwolf Glad to hear u liked it , my eyes are on the les Paul custom
@@PicoDePauloThat’s right. Thats the first one I grabbed. In Alpine White. I can’t get enough of it. Next up - the ES-355 in Ebony. Arriving on 05/27/2024. Update: 05/17/2024!👍🏼
I totally agree with you man! I’m happy to find high end epiphone with high end specs but less expensive than a Gibson one
Just about to buy the 355 until I just saw it's poly finish.....looking at the Tokai again I think
A very thin satin poly finish that feels great, better than a Gibson nitro finish - which is done OVER a poly undercoat..
@@pharmerdavid1432 Bullshit!
I'm in.
Wow somebody that actually knows what they're talking about. Let me go look at your other videos
👀
Amen…. Finally someone speaking truth and not just complaining. I totally understand that Epiphone has no interest competing with Harley benton, they want to be premium in their market. You want cheaper, get a freaking HB.
Thanks for at least watching before you comment. lol
For me, I just prefer the real thing, Gibson LP 60s and ES 339. I always take resale value into consideration whenever I invest in a guitar. Gibson, Fender USA, and PRS USA seem to have the best retentive value.
Agree with everything you are saying in your video spot on
If the pickups don't matter and the wood doesn't matter what does matter? If you can't hear the difference, it might be your ears not discerning the difference in frequency response. I will grant you the amp and even more the speaker have a massive influence on what you hear but the signal from the guitar is the tone generator. I do agree that better guitars cost more. 1299 is not bad for a nice 335. A used gibson studio model will be $2K on the low side and come with issues.
Let talk about the $1500 Sg Custom
the Original issue in 1999 was $420 for the guitar + $330 for 3 gold 57 classics + $100 for a case = $850 which equals $1593 in todays money.
That didn't include CTS pots , Ebony fretboard or real Mother of Pearl inlay or a Gibson headstock .
on the bright side...you can now get the older model epiphones at the great used prices
Hell yeah, you can. Including the stupidly great playing Korean stuff. 👀
The fact the comparison is so hotly debated still tells me all I need to know about the quality of Epiphone.
i can almost get a USA guitar with CTS electronics & American pickups for a few hundred more in multiple brands.
should of been 1000$ max
i own several gibson les pauls ranging from a studio to a standard and i have to admit that the LPC looks pretty awesome. ive always wanted one but i cant justify 5 to 6k on a single guitar but 1299 is pretty tempting.
the current $799 model was a pretty good guitar(neck was too thin for me) but this new one has alot of nice features
I never thought I would pay this much for an EPI, but I bought the Joe B red SG last year and I LOVE that guitar and play it almost every day. It's worth the price to me. I don't expect to regularly pay that price for an SG, but I have no complaints.
Those look sweet, man. I hate that I missed my window on them, I would probably have gotten one myself.
I prefer my Epiphone 335 headstock, switch crackels when changing between PUP's, but other than that I'm really happy.
Spot on!
The same people will buy a $1300
phone though lol. I might even go for that Epiphone ES-355 in
white! it has custombuckers in it! The only other guitar that I own that has that is my Gibson Custom Shop
R8 for much much more money. You don't have to be a fanboy of anything, If I like it I'll buy it. As long as we play guitars is all that matters.
pickups (and amp) are the only things that determine a guitar’s sound, so you got that wrong. But I totally agree with the sentiment
The 490/498 rocks so much !
Yeah. Get the Alpine White. It’s awesome.
Excellent channel. New subscriber here. Enjoying that stuff!
Thank you! ⚡️🦩
Currency conversion kicks in there, doesn't it?
The custom bucket pickups are worth $500 alone. Are you really paying that much more ? I hate the epiphone headstock I’m kind of shallow like that.
The red 355 is EPIC and should satisfy any second thoughts about getting anything else if you looking for a semi-hollow under 2K
@@Electric.Flamingo agreed! Sad but true!
Just plain wrong...
You are so f##king wrong 😂😂😂😂
@@markwilliamsmusic2987 under weight of your arguments I had to change my mind! Wow thank you
Epiphone should enjoy the different budget areas they have.
I'm glad people at least see my point and contribute to the conversation instead of just spouting nonsense! ⚡️🦩
Expected a click bait vid and honestly agreed with everything you said. Great vid
I dig the new direction.. I was the guy who would buy the cheaper Gibsons instead of Epi.. With the new 59, I think I'd actually consider buying it. (they seem to sound fukn great too)
The new Epi stuff has been great since they did the "Inspired by" stuff.
Hopefully with the release of these new Epiphones, I can bag a pre 2020 custom for cheeeeeeap 😊
Play more, GAS less 😎
Probuckers are great vintage tone pickups !
Completely agree on all your points.
Ask for better stuff, get better stuff, pay for better stuff.
Sounds like sound logic, but it seems to go right over some people's heads!
Exactly!
Im okay with a $1200 Epiphone
i have been eyeballing one the 335's for a few years now, ever since I picked up a 50th Anniversary Casino I have really enjoyed the shape. But... if I get an iced tea burst 335. he a case. then i decide to upgrade the pickups and wiring harness and then havve to pay someone to assemble it because I made a mess with the soldering iron... That new 1959 335 really makes sense to me
I ordered the new ES-355 🤟
@@markwilliamsmusic2987 share your thoughts on it, im curious hoe you like it
I had the same reasoning and ordered the ES-355.
Oh man, you would be surprised.
I have seen so many people unironically say these new Epiphones should be like $700-800 tops 😂
If it was made in Japan or even Korea it would be worth it. The fact it’s made in China definitely decreases the value and especially its resale.
Blasphemy. Gibson would never. 😂
Who knows? That's a great question though.
Shijie - under $1K and better than Fender custom shop S and T models imo..
These new ones will eventually end up there at a decent price. lol
