What makes it worse is when there appears to be no reason at all for the death. This was the most visually healthy fish I own...I have made the best of a bad situation and tried to make improvements to the tank for the remaining Discus in an attempt to make the best of a terrible situation.

@@MDFishTanks It was very difficult to watch the vid as well . Hopefully we get to know what the problem was🥺. Maybe it was the water temp only because the quality of the water was quite pristine or maybe aggression but I haven't watched the whole vid yet , hopefully the others are all fine !

I have keeping Discus for 30 years and here's a scenario I witnessed only a couple times. One time I was working in a tank and in the next tank I heard the loudest "knock" it sounded like a glass being hit with a rubber mallet. I looked over and a discus had smacked the side of the tank, super healthy. He did 4 spins a died right in front of me, I couldn't believe I was watching it was so loud. The other times they were stunned but pulled out of it. As far as a small Discus in a group, in my experience there is always a bottom fish on the pecking order, if you take the fish out another takes the bottom position, think of a wolf pack, they are 100% cichlids. Just observation over the years. Enjoy your channel thanks for sharing and being real!

This is my thought as well. At feeding time one of my discus often does a sudden thrash, which could cause a strike on the top or side glass. Sorry. I actually grieve when I lose a fish.

    • @duanevh3790

I kept discus for about 10 years and gave up mostly because of what you said about the pecking order (and hexamita which goes along with that). everyone says to keep discus in larger groups to reduce aggression but I found that didnt work -larger numbers for me just equaled more breeding pairs which led to more aggresion and discus getting killed. If you lose 1 or 2 I found its next to impossible to find ones large enough to replace them.

The downfalls of keeping discus! It’s always gutting. I kept discus for years, starting out in planted tanks but after years of trial and error realised that it was just too hard to keep plants and discus alive. The water temps are too high to not get algae blooms. Also discus are terrible eaters and need feeding too often to not get Nitrate spikes. In the end I went with set ups where you could vacuum all the substrate and did 50% water changes weekly. RO water preheated in a water butt. This was 100% successful and never lost a fish after that.

Sorry to hear about the loss, here’s my experience with discus and what I think the problem was: I used to keep my discus at 80 degrees and I didn’t like their energy levels, I bumped it up to 84 degrees slowly and boom they started acting like brand new fish, so much energy, so interactive, eating like absolute pigs. With your discus, I don’t think it was a water quality issue or even an aggression issue, I think the water temp dropped too much because of the weather and whatnot and like I said even 80 degrees is too cold for discus IMO. I’m sure you’ll figure it out, much love MD ❤️

This is not going to help you at all but I had similar experience.
Got a 100 gallon very heavily planted tank and bought 10 blue diamond discus about 32 inches diameter from a local hobbyist. Did everything right, grossly over-filtered, twice weekly 50% water changes using RO/DI water, temperature 28.5 water parameters absolutely spot on. Fed them mainly with beefheart using the recipe used by Jack Wattley Discus. They grew well and coloured up beautifully.
Came down one day after about 5 months and two were dead, one on the bottom and the other floating. There had been no sign of abnormal behaviour 8 hours earlier and even though dead they were unmarked. I immediately checked water parameters and everything was fine. I removed the dead fish but other than doing a water change I had no idea why they had died so could not treat them for anything. That was nearly a year ago and the remaining 8 fish are fine, they never showed any sign of distress or illness at that time or at any time since then.
To this day I have no idea why they died, all I can say is that sometimes sh1t happens.

@@michaelgallacher4800 Somewhat overdramatic hyperbole, don't you think?
If he only cared about plants, then why is this video him agreeing that the fish needed more space, and removing nearly all of the plant and rescaping so the discus had more space? Oh no! he agreed that the set up wasn't perfect for them and fixed it! WHAT A MONSTER.
"Hope the fish die so they ain't stuck in that hell" lmao. What a ridiculous, hysterical reaction! You must be an incredibly difficult person to be around IRL. Expecting perfection from everyone, and attacking them in a stupidly over the top way if they make a mistake, even if they admit it and try to fix it. And if a huge tank, a dedicated keeper and pristine water conditions is hell, then man, most tanks must be even worse than hell! What a drama queen with a mean streak you are.

Sorry for your loss mate…it is always hard to loose a fish especially of that size. I have found out that plant wise, Amazon sword plants and vallisneria gigantea work best. They form great visual barriers but still leave open spaces for the discus to swim through AND they make great spots for the discus to lay there eggs. So some nice big pieces of wood with those plants wood look great.
Discus should be kept on 30C u can keep em a bit lower but they thrive on that temp. It is too hot for some of the corys. If I’m not mistaken the sterbais do well on those higher temps but those albino’s weither they are aneus or paleatus prefer colder temps.
Maybe u could do some research on what other fish share their biotope with discus so u can have some cool species that do well on those higher temps too.
I notice you have a lot of bristlenose plecos in your tanks but if you are ever looking into a more unique species that are still effective algae eaters I could recommend the Farlowella genus! And they aren’t that hard to breed either! Very unique and interesting fish.

Either the Corys are too hot or the Discus are too cold. Based on this death, I would suggest the water temp is just too cold and it’s causing the discus to struggle and stress. Raise temp slowly to 30 or 31 where they will start eating better and should put on some weight and become healthier. Good luck.

@@MDFishTanks that's true , but I mean like I don't think that the temperature would be the cause of the fish dying. Sorry for your loss, i think I pointed out about that orange one being mostly at the back in a previous comment before (Not the small one that died before). I think it had something wrong with it from the get go. I would treat the fish with praziquantel 2 doses 1 week apart and pure metronidazole for 10 days since they seem to have some sort of internal problem (not api gencure since the dose is on the weak side). The thin blue one will probably go next unless you treat your fish. Try to closeley inspect the fish's face and see if there are tiny little holes suggestive of hole in the head disease.

The skinny fish might be due to your limited number of discus. usually a rule of thumb is either a pair for breeding, 10+ fish in a group to avoid bullying. (Seen the effects of that in pet stores). Another reason for the skinny fish could be parasites, and I remember you feeding a large amount of defrosted worms. I cannot remember the details of the feed, but stendker. Stendker recommends that you avoid red mosquito larvae and Tubifex (live in unsanitary water), and Cyclopes are not recommended either as they are often infected with tape worms.
Crossing my fingers for the rest of the pack.

I have had stendker discus for 8yrs and learned a lot, many times been in this position my self. Some deaths have been my own fault. I learned that soil didn't work with discus, plants work but need to be fast growing types like limnophila sessiflora for use off all the nutrients in the water, Cory's help to eat the leftovers. I used bloodworms my discus got sick. I feed 2 times a day they got skinny. Stendker recommend 3 times a day and their beef heart. I tried flake food and granules 3 times a day they got skinny. Many people say it isn't beef heart in nature but there isnt stendker discus in nature either.

    Hello MD.
From my years of keeping discus. It's always bacterial infection that kills discus. It's not worms usually or water condition as in ammonia.
This is always related to bacteria and daily water changes are so so important. Your tanks are lovely but at the same time with all that gravel and plants you cannot keep ultra clean water. All poo and food needs to be removed Daily. We have currently 8 tanks of discus and they get cleaned twice a day. Not exaggerating at all. Every morning and every night.
Over the years we have lost discus and it sux, but keep bacteria at a super low by water changes. Bacteria is in every tank always and even when a test kit says water is perfect still change water daily. All the best and merry Christmas.

Check out George Farmer`s videos about his Discus tank... he struggled too and had to re-scape to an non-planted tank and since his Discus thrive... the amount of food that is needed to keep them happy and the debris/poop that makes it into the soil/ground ( which I would have reduced by atleast 2/3 ) will be a struggle for them if you not siphon and do weekly 50% water changes.... sorry for your loss.

So sorry for the loss of your Discus. Touched my heart to see it lying there, so beautiful and healthy looking. I am a new to fishkeeping, and my first loss was a batch of 10 Carbon rili shrimp...over the course of few weeks. Everything was perfect, my water matched that of the store, they were all healthy and active...then I gave them some of the free food the sop gave me as part of the sale, that's when they all started dying. I had no idea that could have been the problem, and not sure if it was...but I did everything right. I take it to heart because that's a life that I chose to be responsible for. But sometimes things are out of our control or understanding I guess.
    Thank you for sharing ❤️

MD, im sorry for the loss... whatever way you look at it, Discus are hard to keep fish. They need almost every parameter in the tank to be on point. That beeing said, Stendker Discus are the most hardy when it comes to different Discus breeds across europe. I am keeping a groupe of 9 Stendker fish in a heavily planted tank myself and got no issues whatsovever. I think the most important thing they need to thrive is a balanced diet with alot of nutrients and protein. I feed 4-5 times a day in smaller portions. Discus have no sense of how much they are acutally eating, so its best to feed them small portions 3 - 5 times throughout the day. Also, the more fish the better, as the agression in smaller groups is always way worse than in bigger ones. The fish like to be kept in really warm water (29,5 plus) which also helps with their interest in food. In that case, oxygen in form of an airstone or an oxydator might be a helpfull addition to your tank, as the plants and the surface movement might not be enough to provide a healthy amount of O in such warm waters. Remember to keep going and I am sure your fish will be in best health :-) Best of luck to your new tank setup and greetings from Germany :)

    25:00 about the barbels.
some people use sandblasting sand in their tanks and some of this stuff is really sharp

All natural sand is just fine.

Sorry for the loss MD. I live in Belgium and I ma in fishkeeping for over 50 years. I personality have seen the quality of fish gone down over the years, due to inbreeding, line breeding etc. I think we have heer the same problem as With koi. The high quality fish are strictly line bred nu have low resistance against parasites and so on. Try to use some kind of uvc (hydra filter system) or ozone and the problems will be gone. Grts, Stef

      Agreed.
Discus I bred in the 80's & early 90's were F1 & F2 out of wild types. Started with 8 from one place, and 8 from another = 5 breeding pairs and definitely not inbred.
I quit breeding, and didn't keep live bearers for almost 30 years (haven't bred anything since 1999) and the bettas I got just before quarantine had major health struggles, and so have all the live bearers except for the endlers...

I believe they may have some internal parasites as if you look at their stomachs they're still snuck in. Although good for plants, nitrates can create environments such parasites. I think with a basic internal parasites treatment and nice hot 30degree water would helps heaps. Love your vids btw, keep up the good work :)

  • @michaelphillips2875
    @michaelphillips2875 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Wow terrible loss. I know you feed flake just based on all your videos. Two things, Discus do require a higher protein diet. Maybe Blood worms for one feeding a day will help them going forward and adding a heater to their tank only. Discus tdue prefer much higher temps. Raising their tank temp to 84-86F with a heater will help make them feel more comfortable. I know you have had them long term but lower long term temps do shorten their life span. MD we all know you’re an excellent aquarist and all of us do lose fish from time to time. Just my humble opinion to help. Who knows what really happened. I really don’t think it was aggression with no wounds on the fish. One last thought they do prefer a large school much like cardinal and neon tetras. Maybe adding 2-3 more might be appropriate. I do realize a 4 foot tank does have limitations with this species population.

Discus are notoriously hard to keep. Old fish keepers know this. I see more and more people on social media saying this isn't true and diving into discus, then they have problems. Discus are very sensitive to ANY nitrate, feeding, hole in the head disease, environmental changes, aggression, all manner of issues. They are trophy fish for the experienced keeper. In any event, keep it up. You have a fine channel.

Oh man, so sad to see this. Glad you’re making some positive changes to their environment, though. The new temps at 30C should really help and I want to echo the comments on improving their diet. There really isn’t a flake food that seems to be a complete diet for Discus so I hope you’ll give them some beef heart daily for a few weeks to fatten them up. All of them do look a bit emaciated but I think you can turn them around.
Love what you do, MD. Keep at it!

I too have kept Discus for a very long time. You just never know what can happen. They are absolute Primadonnas at times it's part of the interest in keeping them. I did worry about two things watching your videos. You seemed to feed them only flakes (I might be wrong). These are massive fish and need a variety of foods. If you were feeding flakes just once a day that certainly isn't enough food for those beasts! The problem with a planted tank and yours was gorgeous by the way. (I loved looking at it and wondered how you managed to keep them so healthy), is that if there were pellets and other kinds of food settled on the bottom, they will spend hours grazing on the bottom. That isn't a bad thing despite what some will tell you. They probably can't in yours as it was so heavily planted. This also gives the less dominant ones more time to eat when the boss has finished getting their fill of food. That might explain one or two getting a little skinny. The tank now looks much more like a Discus tank should look with a few hiding places but much more room to get out of the way when scrapping with each other which they will always do. It also means more room for a few more Discus!! Nudge Nudge Wink Wink!! lol. Keep up the good work dude you are by far my favourite you tuber. You're passion is infectious to us all. I also love the way you listen to your fans and act upon their guidance. All the best for the new year and rest assured I will continue to watch you for a long time to come. Much Love Ste x
