I’ve always believed that a bicycle is a worthwhile possession. I’ve been trying to replace our car with one for years. It adds a great deal of self sufficient mobility.
I have replaced my car with my walking stick my bike and public transportation. Just know that depending on where you live you will be the frog in a human game of frogger every time you cross the street.
I got rid of my car 11,5 years ago, and drove first 50cc-scooter, meanwhile 125cc (7000W). I hate when it snows, here in Germany, and I have to drive somewhere far, but other than that, no problems... Last Monday, i had to drive while it was snowing, happens rarely... I use 1-2 times, per year car-sharing or public transportation means, and my bicycle too. Plan to minimise 125cc-scooter-usage, by using a 1000W/30kg-electric-roller (just another extra-item, that will clutter my life)... But will never get rid of the 125cc, gazoline is in my veins, I enjoy urban-riding with 60mph, really chalenging by the vast amount of cars on the streets, far more dangerous than 150mph on the boring german highways... :-)
I'm living in Asia, but when I go back to Britain I plan to just have a bicycle. It will be harder in bad weather, but more fulfilling. I think Rob had a video before that mentioned a mountain bike with a trailer that could carry a lot. You'd be fit and save money.
@@takanomemihawk7860 Bearing in mind his mentality, he's probably staying with followers while on tour. He's in someone's spare room somewhere in Europe lol.
Rob Greenfield inspiring how little you have. But I was wondering... you have a notebook, but no writing implement? How do you write in the notebook? When you do shower or swim, or wash your hands, how do you dry yourself? Do you shower and get dressed wet, or drip dry then dress? How do you peel (where necessary) and chop food to cook, or eat, or do you? I'd love to see videos where you go into that in even more detail. How do you travel so cheaply if that $5000 will get you through the entire year including food, accommodation and warmer clothes when you go to Europe or whatever you may need?
@@RobayatRahman I don't think he is. He's not showing any ads, he doesn't have affiliate links in the description and he's not selling any merchandise that's showing up under the video. I don't think TH-cam is going to pay people if they they don't need to, and I am sure that they have to have a way to opt-out of being paid even if they do.
This is so true!!! I think COVID-19 has shown us how much we really need each other. We need each other to grow our food, to bring us energy, to get us supplies we may need. We are all co-dependent.
I think COVID has also shown us how much we can do without, how we can survive with less money, socialising with friends and family does not have to involve restaurants, pubs etc but can be just as good sitting on the grass in a park with a simple picnic and bottle of water.
I almost cried as i am watching this video... Thinking of how i spend on what is not so important for me. Someday i want to be like you and teach other people how to do it. You are a blessing for me..thank you so much.
Perhaps they’re swim shorts with that netting thing? Either way what’s wrong with commando? Less laundry, less to own and carry and less to worry about getting stolen 🙈
I wanted to do this for so long. I let my parents talk me out of doing what I believed in and dreamed of and instead went to college where I dropped out after a year. I sank into a deep depression after that and then my older brother diy-died which sent me deeper into a depression/anxiety/agoraphobia coma for about a year. Crawling out of that to move on with my life I found myself in a relationship experiencing what I know now to be narcissistic abuse. I also got her pregnant and am now a single father of 2 year old twins of whom I luckily was able to get full custody. Anyway, all that time I felt I could not live the life I imagined for myself. Why? I had to get a job or go to college. I had to move out. I had to pay rent. I had to stay close to family. I had to get a car. I had to pay for insurance etc. I could not be free. I let everyone convince me that I was wrong, that taking my own path would be a horrible shameful mistake. Now that I have no personal freedom as a dedicated single father I realize how truly absolutely free I was all along. Now I'm only ashamed that I allowed myself to be brainwashed into thinking I had no power to decide what my life should be. You have the power. Your life is yours and no one else's.
You might not have much time to yourself with two young kids but you are still free to dream what direction you want to take your life from here for ward 😊
So do what Rob said "Not trying to be perfect, just better" as a parent of two teenagers you would be surprised at how few possessions it takes to raise a family. Given the younger they are the more stuff they need it seems. My kids seem to recall and value the memories and experiences more than anything material we gave them. Good luck. Your comment is serving me as guidance as I navigate parenting in this next phase of high school and beyond.
J K That’s a great mentality. Every human has the awareness and will to act on their own, and so every choice they make is their own. No one can ‘force’ you to do something, you _let_ them influence YOUR decision to do it
Send out your address. I’m sure there’s a bunch of homeless people and drug addicts that would love a free place to live. The border to your house doesn’t matter either right? Open your home, quit being so selfish!
I think that borders are a good tool to protect people from unnecessary danger, but if the danger is within the border then I would rather have a way to get out. Not to be a burden on another country but to contribute in a way that is within my abilities without the fear of being cast out, imprisoned, or killed.
My friend in college lived very much like you and he was my happiest friend. Thanks for being a positive example for us. I have a ton of stuff and I don’t think that number will go down but it’s a good practice for me to look at things and remember what is important

I'm watching this after having to leave a second home within 4 years. First time I was able to move from one house to another, thanks to the kindness of family. This time I'm moving from what was my own home into a house with a relative. I'm having to downsize from an entire house, with outside storage, to one bedroom. This has been one of the most traumatic events in my life. While having those emotions I know there are certainly worse things in life. I realize I'm still a bit emotional after having several setbacks in my own health, death of loved ones and loss of financial independence. I did not realize I was so attached to things. Just having to go through such large volumes in short time has been overwhelming. As with most sour events in my life I'm determined to sweeten this up. I have been able to make some money by selling things that were just taking up space and not having to pay to store them. Watching this video has really helped me to look at my situation in a different light. Choosing this lifestyle has to be a bit less uncomfortable than being forced to. I regret I didnt choose it years ago. Not sure I could downsize to his level, but certainly is encouraging! Thanks for sharing!
try a mineral salt deodorant stone. the stone seems to last forever and are non toxic. I volunteer on an organic farm so I do get sweaty and as a female I try to remain fresh and it additionally it conserves my clothing/bras. I never smell using these stones.
I am in awe of you. I have moved from a large house to a one bedroom apartment, gave away masses of possessions, but don't think I could downsize to your way of life.
I was able to meet Rob when he was in San Diego in the 50sq" tiny house. Rob is the real deal and very inspiring to me. I am also a minimalist who traveled in a van and it was a gift to meet you Rob! Vince
I was always impressed by Gandhiji, who was my idol. That was more than 100 years back. In 2020 someone talking about this kind of life is very impressive. Tolstoy was Gandhi's idol. You are living legend.
Always enjoy your videos Rob. I dig your "embracement" of your love for mother earth and all of humanity. You are correct we are neither independent nor dependant on eachother, we are however interdependent. Everything that we own when we are dead and gone will surely belong to others anyways. It is ultimately "who we are" that will remain and last forever. May many blessings continue to come your way my friend.
My mom just told me about you and this is the second video of yours I’ve watched. Thank you for creating these videos and for getting me thinking about how I can live in alignment with my beliefs.
I come back to this video a lot. I first viewed it a week after its release, and since then, I have been back and forth with regard to minimalism. At one point, I got everything I had down into a single 40L backpack. That was the happiest I have ever been in my life. Since then, I have let in substantially more (mostly books, some world coins, and clothing for cold climates and personal taste), as well as more tech related junk. This all caused me to become more depressed and weighed down. I am restarting my journey to a more free life. I came up with a saying that I think sums it up really nicely: Maybe it's not what we lose - what we choose to give up. Maybe it's about letting life in. Thank you Rob.
OMNIVORE’s DILEMMA!! I did a thesis in my college English course based on this book. A fantastic read. I always come back to this video for inspiration. Thank you, Rob, for helping me live a better life
i feel strangely so myself watching this video, like if i was watching a better version of myself. you’re doing what i always wanted to become. i really wish i can go minimalist and barefoot soon, thanks for inspiring and showing a more ecofriendly and earthy life is possible
I did a long distance hike in 2016 and really enjoyed having only what I could carry on my back (plus what I had stored at my parents house). I remember my mind would sometimes go to think about those items that I had stored at my parents house and they... just didn't seem very important anymore. And watching your video brings back that feeling.
The key word mentioned in this video is 'adapting.' That is to say to live within your means according to your circumstance. As a fellow minimalist, I've gone through phases time and time again where I culled 95% of my belongings. While it did feel freeing, I always found myself needing to re-purchase some of the things I sold. Be realistic about your lifestyle, hobbies, career interests ect. Owning things is not bad, it's more so about making sure that you aren't finding your self worth in the things you own to the point that they own you. Take what you want from that because it's all up to your own experience.
Yes! I was hoping you would make a video about your recent downsizing! I am moving soon and look at you for inspiration on what is essential. Some things you have I do not consider essential and some I have you would not consider essential, but it is so helpful to see how you do things because it provides a starting point, which is really the hardest part, at least for me.
Awesome dude !! Didnt think that i could be so jealous of his lack of trappings...they're definitely called that for a reason !! The things we own..end up owning us !! 🤗🤔
Nice I love this. I live in a van now so I have more possessions filling up my van, but about 5 years ago I got down to everything I owned fit in my backpacking pack and a normal backpack, plus my bike. So like you moved by biking to your tiny home, once I reached that state of minimalism after cutting down gradually for a bunch of years, I moved by taking the amtrak and then biking from the train stop to my new apartment carrying everything I owned on my back in my two bags. When I moved the next time it took me an hour to pack up everything I owned from my place and head out the door. Even still I probably had twice as much stuff as you do now!
Well done my friend, very inspiring. Completely changed my lifestyle starting 2010, removed all (sin)thetics and healed myself from over 58 procedures on my spine. You are absolutely right, nature is our medicine. Ground the electrical vessel to earth, eat clean sacred plants, drink water and tea structured with Love. Work with the earth and breath. We can balance everything.
Have you heard about swak sticks for dental hygiene? (It's wood and naturally antibacterial) Also I would recommend to store the toothpaste in a brown glass container to minimize oxidation from sunlight.
THIS VIDEO IS SO HELPFUL ! As a woman I can say that YES you can live so simply and even more about beauty products ! I only use green clay as a beauty product, I put ZERO shampoo and I do it home ( i use eggs instead and it works wonders), everything i put on my skin is something I can eat , as simple as that. As for the rest, I have to say your video inspired me to declutter (again) my appartment. I thought about having friends at home so I wanted them to feel confortable and started buying things that I didn't need for myself. THANK YOU ! You're such an inspiration ! Bisous de France !

You have a great life my friend. Care for the nature, living simply, and helping people. Thats how Jesus live when He save the world. You are truly blessed. You deserve every good things in the world. 😊 have a great time
As someone who has moved alot and know it can be a pain. I am proud of you! I have always got rid of things but still have alot of stuff and there is some things tht are sentimental. I have a storage and I just want to get rid of so much but then im like I already have it and when I need it I can just come and get it. The struggle is real lol 😆
Thank you Rob. I think it is also important to be conscious that we all 'have' 'things' which are like possessions: our reputations, our relationships, our skills and abilities, and others. By minimizing your physical possessions, you free up time and energy to invest in your nonmaterial possessions.
Rob, I went to an audiologist and had ear plugs made to fit my ears. No more throw away, sponge like ear plugs for me. They come with a very nice, little leather type , case with a pinch opening, so no hinge to break! They are well worth the cost! Small enough to not be seen. I did get them in orange, incase I drop one it’s easy to find. 👍🏻
Not sure if you’ve done a video on this, but I’d be interested to hear your backstory. How did you end up living the lifestyle that you do? How was the transition, was it hard, felt necessary? What does your family think? 👍🏻
If we all tried to live on the kinds of others, it wouldn't be long before society would be a hot mess. I believe we all can live with much less. Over the past 18 months hubby and I have reduced by about 40%. We purged 3 times and now we live in a 32 foot 5th wheel in Kingman AZ. We dont plan to live here for ever, but for now it's ok.
That is what I was thinking. I agree that most of us need to downsize, and I absolutely do need to, but just because he doesn't OWN the items, doesn't mean he isn't consuming them.
for practial purposes I cannot live like this…however, this is a wake up call for us as a consuming society. I am sure I can reduce my possessions by at least half. this freedom will provide space…space for creativity, human connections, and true living. Thank you Rob.

I agree my friend!

Donna Miller He did mention he has a towel, maybe he uses the same one?
He showed a blue wash cloth, he said it was multipurpose.
Donna Miller for the finance he’s making money from TH-cam every month Ofcourse
@@RobayatRahman I don't think he is. He's not showing any ads, he doesn't have affiliate links in the description and he's not selling any merchandise that's showing up under the video.

I watch this video occasionally to keep me on track. Consumerism is a powerful force that is hard to combat. I’m making baby steps. Wish me luck!
No one can ‘force’ you to do something, you _let_ them influence YOUR decision to do it
Nobody lives in a vacuum. Your decisions affect everyone around you. Being a good Dad is the best path a father can take!

bullsh_t. Borders come first. if not YOU pay for non citizens.
Send out your address. I’m sure there’s a bunch of homeless people and drug addicts that would love a free place to live. The border to your house doesn’t matter either right? Open your home, quit being so selfish!
He wasn’t saying that borders are bad just that they are not the be all end all.
You don't own I pen or pencil to write in your book?

I have a question, if I was your mother, where would I stay during a visit? In my son's small condo I sleep on a cot and if he didn't have a cot I would be thrilled to sleep on the floor just to get the chance to visit him. I wish more people recognized that the other spirit in a room is more important than any possessions owned by that spirit.
You recognize that your worth is so much more than your possessions. Our worth is how we choose to connect with others. You, my dear young man are a rich man. You share your beautiful spirit so openly with a very closed society that is obsessed with their possessions. God Bless and Keep Sharing.

@ThriftedLuxe .

Thank you, Rob, for helping me live a better life
It's incredibile how you express the same thoughts that are in my mind since many Years... But you do dare apply Them!!! Deep respect!
i feel strangely so myself watching this video, like if i was watching a better version of myself. you’re doing what i always wanted to become. i really wish i can go minimalist and barefoot soon, thanks for inspiring and showing a more ecofriendly and earthy life is possible
I did a long distance hike in 2016 and really enjoyed having only what I could carry on my back (plus what I had stored at my parents house). I remember my mind would sometimes go to think about those items that I had stored at my parents house and they... just didn't seem very important anymore. And watching your video brings back that feeling.
The key word mentioned in this video is 'adapting.'
That is to say to live within your means according to your circumstance.
I probably have 43 possessions in my purse currently 😂❤️ really fun video!

Thank you Rob. I think it is also important to be conscious that we all 'have' 'things' which are like possessions: our reputations, our relationships, our skills and abilities, and others. By minimizing your physical possessions, you free up time and energy to invest in your nonmaterial possessions.

Fantastic example of how we should live❤ thank you Robin.
Wealth is from the heart, not from the pocket.❤
If we all tried to live on the kinds of others, it wouldn't be long before society would be a hot mess. I believe we all can live with much less.
