You 100% want someone destroying Piglin structures as much as you can. Piglins drop Lapis even before Lapis income begins, and Piglin structures are the game's only source of Prismarine to build improvements.
Also, get a defensive Redstone Launcher.
I was really looking forward to playing this game when it drops but unfortunately there was an electrical fire in my apartment building and I'm stuck in a motel😢

The beetle is just better than the bird. It can glide and straight up climb walls they should increase the bird jumping height tbh
Beetle is very slow. If not in an area where they can out climb players, very easy to get destroyed by basic attacks

Here are some other smaller tips.
#1 space in your base is limited so planning where you are going to put upgrade buildings and defenses is really important, don't just go and place defences and structures randomly because you will be kicking yourself for it late game.
#2 don't build lapis flags because not only are they quite expensive but you also don't need that much lapis early game and the only reason why you should make units early game is to attack piglin structures. And you shouldn't need them late game either because the longer a match goes on the more lapis you will gain naturally.
#3 be conservative with your resources because if you haven't noticed things like stone and ores are not infinite and I have been in a few games where there was literally no stone left and we couldn't build anymore defenses, so again you need to put a fair bit of thought into where and how many arrow towers and walls you are gonna make. Also make sure to refund your units when you are done with them.
#4 don't make grindstone golems seriously don't, they do very little damage and only knock enemies back.
#5 if one of your teammates places something like an improvement hub down in an impractical place then don't delete it, deleting structures doesn't give you a refund of any kind and as said before resources are not infinite.
#6 and finally upgrades are crucial because without them attacking bases would be very tedious and risky with only cobblestone golems. And you need them to make the most op structure in the game. The redstone launcher!

I think it's a good idea to constantly expand the walls around your base as it makes it harder for enemies to attack
Then also make sure to keep as much biomes as possible under your control
I normally roughly have 6 rings around the base
Usually I prefer to just have two or three that are armed to the teath.

They need a progression system and a way to match make with your friends on the same team

If you're playing with a friend wait for a second person to join your friends game then have them invite you. They choose teams 1 by 1
this would be usable if you could talk to others in the game
You don't need 2 people to be the "miners" at the start.
Everyone can mine while building and fighting
Technically you should really have one player constantly destroying piglin bases so you can have a constant supply of prizmeriene and lapis.
Another for building defences.
A third one for scouting
And the final one for gathering resources.

i dont think there should be a resource gatherer per say. everyone should have their allays out to collect resource faster.

I don't think this game really needs knowledge of minecraft tbh. It's like minecraft dungeons. You could play it and enjoy it without ever even hearing of minecraft before.
