Met Mr. Rubin at an audiophile show in San Francisco. My father in law builds amps and such and had a room. I was acting as DJ. Rick Rubin walked in and my jaw dropped. He was just about to leave and I just reached out to shake his hand to tell him I was a big fan. Then I asked him if there was anything he'd like me to play. He asked if I had any Frank Sinatra. Genuine question what exactly does producing mean when it’s not electronic music? Cos with hip hop etc you’ve got a beat that the producer makes but with rock/metal normally the band writes the instrumental so what exactly does a producer do for them?
@@stefan_4508 There's a near infinite list of things a rock/metal producer could be doing but here's a few examples (for bigger projects each of these jobs are probably done by individual dedicated experts). Notice that most of this still applies to the hip hop genre, a producer is not a composer or beat maker: Production: Helping with song writing and structure (just as RR does here when he suggests an acapella intro) and other production details, for example deciding to double track vocals for a chorus, add backing vocal harmonies or addition background instruments, or making suggestions to change the song structure ("maybe it'd be good to do another chorus after verse 3"). Also the type of gear used is chosen by the producer. What mic will the singer use? What guitar amp? What are the settings on the amp? How many mics and what mics to use on a drum kit? Is the band going to be recorded live in the studio, or will the parts be recorded separately? The actual operation of the mixing desk / computer however it's recorded. The list goes on and on, just about everything not involving actually performing comes under the job of production. Mixing: This includes setting the volume levels of the various instruments (eg. how loud is the snare relative to the guitars or kick drum), and also using other effects such as compression and EQ. I’m assuming you don’t know what these are if you don’t know what a producer does, but put simply these are tools to make things sound clearer in the mix. Without these you’d have problems such as vocals having uneven volume, sounding too loud when the singer sings loudly or sounding too quiet when the singer is singing quietly. Or frequency related problems, for example imagine if a hihat was super bass boosted, firstly it’d sound weird as hihats are a high frequency treble heavy element, and secondly it’d be taking up space in the overall bass frequency of the song, which makes elements that should be heard in those frequencies, eg kick drum or bass guitar, sound less clear. So in this situation a producer would cut the bass frequencies of the hihat to make more space in the bass frequencies for kick and bass. Special effects like echos and reverb are also added at this stage. Mastering: Similar to mixing but rather than mixing individual elements like the snare and guitar separately, the song is mixed as a whole together. This is done to ensure that songs are the same volume and sound consistent across an album and is usually done by a separate person to the mixer to get a second perspective on the mix. There might also have to be different versions of mastering done for different mediums, eg. Vinyl and streaming have different technical requirements that usually require 2 different masters. Mastering is the most skilled job in the process, as they are making adjustments to the song 10 or 20 times more subtle than at the mixing stage, for example boosting a specific frequency by only half a decibel (you need decades of experience to hear the difference, these changes are mainly done for technical reasons).
RR is ridiculous...... he just gets hip hop producing regardless for what artist or what decade it is.. He knows that it's completely based on aggressive percussion in its roots...
