We're not veteran RV'ers, we are just getting ready to go full time in a few months. We currently live in Nevada, but we've decided to switch our domicile to Montana. It would cost us over $300 a year just to register a trailer in Nevada, in Montana you can get a permanent trailer plate for a one time fee of around $175. If you have an older truck you can also get a permanent registration for that. We will be sticking with our 2001 Suburban 2500 for our tow vehicle, so a one time registration fee of $250 and we're done with renewals.
Montana also has fairly easy homeschool laws (we have a 6yo son).
When we moved from Michigan to Nevada 10 years ago we kept our Michigan based credit union. They are members of the credit union Co-Op and if I go to any credit union that is a member of the Co-Op I can do most anything that I could do at an actual branch. 10 years of living 2,200 miles away from the nearest branch office and no problems.
I don't know how useful it would be, but if you are signed up for Informed Delivery with the post office (free service) you can log into your USPS account and see scans of the fronts of all the envelopes being delivered to you, although that probably only works if you maintain a residential address.
When I heard you were stuck in sand at Pismo my first thought was that you probably forgot to air down. Glad you mentioned that later in the video.

i snail mailed 2 weeks worth of camping gear , food - everything - to go camp out in nowhere alaska for a week. i flew into anchorage - picked up my van rental and waited for morning to go to the main post office in anchorage and request my USPS packages sent in care of the postmaster general of anchorage. (people who worked in the back at the p.o. came out front to see who and what , me and the boxes. way before 9/11 ...doubt i could pull it off these days.)

Many states don't tax Social Security but do on pensions or 401k-s. My chose is SD. The healthcare and RV insurance is low there and registration fees are cheap plus renewal of plates can be done via mail. Plus no emissions or special license needed. My healthcare provider has a hotline to talk with a doctor. They will fax in a prescription or may advise you to go to a immediate care place.

Roy this is very good information! SD is an excellent state for RVers. They make it convenient. And you are absolutely right, SS retirement income is not treated the same as other types of retirement income. Many commentators are describing how states are happy to tax the 401K!

I domiciled in South Dakota with Americas Mailbox from 2012 to 2015. I was completely satisfied with both and am planning to do it again (permanently this time) in a couple of years. Everything is cheaper in South Dakota, especially vehicle registration and insurance! And Americas Mailbox does everything for you. They handle all the legalities of domicile. You go in and sign all the documents in about an hour. Then they mail you your vehicle registration every year with zero hassles. I cant' recommend them highly enough. I spent three days is South Dakota and never went back. You can get medical insurance that works everywhere. T-Mobile Money is a great way to bank on the road as well.

John Fortune Trading, I too subscribe to America's Mailbox. I sold my home in 2017 and haven't been to South Dakota yet! America's Mailbox assisted with everything, from establishing domicile, to vehicle registration, to now two years of tag renewals, in addition to providing mail service.
My current driver's license is valid through my birthday, so I plan to visit South Dakota before winter to, among other things, obtain my new driver's license.
America's Mailbox even has a hotel and campground for members to use when they visit Box Elder, and I plan to stay with them.

@@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt I just learned that SD D.L's need to be renewed in person. This means a trip every 5 years. It was never mentioned in any of the YT videos I watched. Do any of the other states allow for on-line renewals.

@@stxflyer As driver's licenses are a nearly universal form of photo I.D., I believe that every state requires in-person renewals. That, and you have to take a current picture and a vision check/test.
Unlike passports, which can be renewed via mail, liability is inherent with driver's licenses. Therefore, the in-person renewal requirement.
I don't consider having to visit South Dakota once every five years to be a particularly onerous requirement.

one thing i did while i was on the road was maintain a P.O.box in northern idaho. the postmaster was really easy to work with and would save up my mail in a box and hand it to me whenever i came thru. since there was no mail delivery in that town the box was free. people who lived along the mail trucks route had to pay a fee however.
having a bank account in the next town and having my bank statements go to the p.o.box was enough to satisfy the state residence requirements along with having an idaho drivers license. since my house later was off grid for several years, there were no power bills or water bills that would have bolstered a residence claim.
my truck was also registered to that p.o.box number for the longest time and the insurance bill also went there.. so there's several ways to cover your bases when it comes to residency...

Very thorough video. Let me add: Another issue is what is required to establish a legal domicile. South Dakota is popular because you can set it up in a day. Other states might require more proof of intent to be a permanent resident, like a lease, a utility bill, etc. You don't want to have to rent an apartment to establish residency. Where will you spend your time?: If you're going to spend time in, say, Florida, it makes sense to domicile there, even if it's more work than SD. Banking: there are a couple of nationwide ATM networks. Banking: a nationwide bank is not a requirement. Most people just want to withdraw cash without paying a fee. My bank is not national, but it is a member of an ATM network with something like 20,000 ATMs.

    • @RVOddCouple
      @RVOddCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

All Great Points! Thank you for adding to the discussion. Every individual's needs are unique. Depending on your banking needs an ATM may not be enough. If it is, try a smaller, more local bank! But again, its a case-by case situation!

Our credit Union just joined a program that allows us to use many other credit unions in all 50 states. This program, we were told, just started about 3 months ago. It's a good way to be able to bank with credit unions and have the ability to stay away from the large banks.

Mercedes, FYI most phones can make and send scans these days. Efax is an email faxing service that eliminates the need for other faxing services. And you can send and receive fax from any FedEx location. Just something to think about for those who need faxing. Also, going paperless on your billing will reduce the amount of non-junk mail you receive. Take care!

Great video as always!!!! Hope you snuck in some you time while you had the RV to yourself!!!
We are choosing Texas not because it is the perfect choice but because it hits the most boxes!!! In our consideration for Domicile we had to consider:
Taxes - income taxes (pension and 1099 income) and property taxes as a lot of states charge property taxes yearly on vehicles and RVs
Vehicle insurance rates and registration costs (including wether the require vehicle inspections or not)
And the tipping factor for us was Homeschool Laws! (We have twin boys that are going to have to be homeschooled while we travel)
We eliminated Florida due to the vehicle insurance rates and the homeschool laws aren't very strict BUT they do make it difficult/expensive to have an acredited curriculum count and allow for transcripts when the time comes we do decide to put the boys back into school.
We were going back and forth between South Dakota and Texas for a while both will not tax our income, both have low insurance rates and good mailing service options, South Dakota has NO vehicle inspection required and Texas does require it HOWEVER South Dakota's homeschool laws require that you work in a specific county with a specific board of education and you have to go back for testing on a yearly basis for your children 🤦 there is no way we are going to be in South Dakota every year!!!
So we ended up deciding on Texas because the homeschool laws are much better and many online curriculums are accepted! we feel that Texas is something that we can definitely do on a yearly basis if we have to go back for vehicle inspection but most of the rvers we have spoke with have explained that the loophole is you only have to have your vehicles inspected if you're in the state! so basically whenever we go through the state of Texas we have to stay a couple of days to make sure we get it done even if that's every two years!!! but vehicle registration and licenses can be renewed by mail. We ended up choosing Texas Home Base as our Domicile/Mail Service! It is a wonderful company and gives us a real street address that thousands of others don't share with us unlike escapees!

      @RVOddCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is fantastic information! I didn't realize the homeschool implications of domiciling in FL. I'm going to have to dig deeper, as John and I are considering this more and more. We're falling in love with the fulltime rv lifestyle and don't want to stop!
I appreciate your kind words regarding alone time. It's a big deal and it's very important. It's the funniest thing because they arrived as soon as I finished! But in a weird way I feel like I got to chat with friends. (even though it was a one-way conversation! lol) Thank you for sharing! Great stuff!

As I understand it too that Texas doesn't require the DOT inspection if you're out of state but do require that you do the inspection within a few weeks of coming back into Texas. A local in Dallas also told me that they're fixing to do away with the DOT inspections but I haven't found any proof to this.

I know this is an old video so I don't expect you to respond, however, you & John are amazing. So you know we are almost debt free and getting closer to retirement (less then 2yrs). For the last few years I've been researching everything I can about RV's, (5th wheels, TT, motor homes, etc) and I've also looked into domicile, mail services and taxes. Your video covers 90% of what I've learned and the comments covered just about 5%. Way too much to cover 100%, I'm sure there are some other legal things not discussed. Anyway, thank you and your followers for confirming what I've learned. I am currently putting together a spread sheet that list mostly what you've covered but will hope to include property tax, sales tax, local & state taxes. Ratings on auto insurance cost, registration, healthcare. Not on all states since that will take too long maybe just the top 10 states. Anyway, please keep doing what you are doing, y'all will one day be my road neighbor's. (God willing).

Re: emissions testing - I know that in Nevada, the only place with emissions testing is in Clark county, around Las Vegas & surrounding areas. So, if your address is within that zone, you WILL have to emissions test your vehicle. Outside of that zone, say in Pahrump, for example, you will NOT have to get your vehicle emissions tested.
In Arizona, the only places in the state that require emissions testing are in the Phoenix & Tucson areas. If your address is in Lake Havasu City or Quartzsite, just to randomly pick two areas, you will NOT have to have your vehicle emissions tested.
What if you choose a state to domicile in, but you are physically somewhere else(which is the whole point of being a full-timer, right?)? You MIGHT have to return to that state every year(or whatever) to get your vehicle inspected!
My point is, make sure to research vehicle registration/inspection requirements when choosing a home state, not just 'no income taxes'. Hope this was helpful!

One additional item for people to consider when changing domicile is any licenses they may hold. For myself, looking into getting reciprocity for my nursing license :-) is really important.
But one thing is for sure, no matter what state I go to for my domicile, it is worth it to get out of California...

I truly enjoyed the Q/A. Makes me feel as if I really know you guys! Great job! We are taking our time, exploring our options and hope to have a new rig within the next year. Because of you two, we are now looking at 5th wheels vs. a van! Time will tell... still lots to figure out. It will only be half time while we are in northern Florida during the winter months near my daughter, son-in-laws and our grand babies. Suggestions for a good RV semi permanent park in that area? Seeing a lot about SD for domicile. One thing that may be of concern - if not now, in the near future - where a legislator Rep. Tom Brunner, R-Nisland, filed House Bill 1129 this session to require that in order to register to vote, a person must actually live in South Dakota. The bill was tabled in committee this year, but may just keep coming up. You can read the full article at www.sdnewswatch.org/stories/thousands-of-s-d-voters-dont-live-where-they-register/
I would think that SD to loose almost $100 Million in vehicle registration fees may slow its progress. Even if these lawmakers do not understand there are and will be a lot of people who do not want to live in sticks and bricks the rest of their lives.
Have not research other states, but think it probably is on people's radar. Guess the best thing is to keep your options open...Too much to see in this beautiful country - keep on traveling

And, although I am probably a few years away from purchasing a RV, I would hate to go into a dealership totally green. You mention not going with escapees because of the large number of pages that come with things like medical insurance yearly updates and their cost per scanned page. What I don't think is covered here is that you really don't need to have anything scanned that isn't urgent. Yes, those mailings are a huge number of pages, but for what reason would you need them to scan those? Switch to paperless for all your bills and bank statements. The only things that you might need to have scanned are official documents from state or local government that you aren't sure might be time sensitive. If something isn't time sensitive, you don't need it scanned, just have it forwarded. I can't see an average person needing more than 1-2 documents scanned a month if even that.

    • @RVOddCouple
      @RVOddCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Example: TX honors common-law marriage but Florida does not recognize Texas Common-Law marriage. Federal regulation honors state law. I performed a wedding for a TX couple in a Florida Veteran's Hospital so the wife could be regarded as married.

    Hmmmm..... who's blue, who's red? 🤔
When speaking about income tax within each state, it should be referred to as State Income Tax because so many have accepted this to mean they wouldn't pay Federal Tax, yes some people actually think that. We'll never get away from Federal Tax.
We did our research, America's Mailbox was by far the best.
We're saving a tremendous amount of money to be doing business in South Dakota.
    < Sales tax 4%
    < Registration
    No State Income Tax
State Weapons Carry Permit has reciprocal agreements with more States then most any other state CCW.
To become a resident of South Dakota only requires a 24 hour stay....and America's Mailbox helps with it all.

    • @RVOddCouple
      @RVOddCouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Cindy this is phenomenal feedback! Thank you so much! My only wish was that America's Mailbox worked in FL. Even though America's Mailbox looked like the smaller company, it was very clear in their reviews that their service was more personalized and hands-on. There are so many things to consider, but you bring up additional benefits to domicile in SD as an RVer. And you are absolutely right regarding State income taxes vs. Federal income taxes. Uncle Sam always gets paid! LOL!

@@RVOddCouple I don't understand why America's Mailbox wouldn't work in Florida, it works everywhere.
I also suggest to fellow RVers, don't forward your mail!
First change the address on your important items, opt out of mailing statements and bills, and don't leave a forwarding address.
Receive all your important bank statements, insurance and medical bills online.
That way you should not be receiving any commercial mail at your new address. Opt out of all 'address sharing' under the Privacy of Information Act. Then you will only receive personal mail at your new address, i.e. birthday and CHRISTmas cards. 😉

Great question Cindy Rose. We need mail to be delivered to FL to help with Domicile process. Great advice on the Privacy of Information Act. Wish we had known about that. Thanks again for your fantastic information. Please don't hesitate to share any other good info you have! This helps so many newbie rvers in their journey!

Cindy I cannot agree more!!! SD would have been perfect for my family all except for the fact that I have young children and that South Dakota has some of the strictest home-school laws making it not a viable option for us 😭 I am luckier than most though when it comes to concealed carry I qualify for The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) therefore I do not I need to carry a permit for each state I am allowed to carry anywhere in the continental United States under my badge.

Mercedes, I'm curious if you looked into st. Brendan's isle mailing services in Green Cove Springs Florida? If yes, why did you eliminate them. Thanks.

@@RVOddCouple My husband and I sailed full-time for about 11 years. We used them as our mailing service and also filed our domicile through them.

New Hampshire as well no state income tax on SS. and pensions

Exactly! This is why the traditional RV Domicile states may not be the best states for you. Everyone's circumstances are unique and I want to encourage people to explore all of their options!

That website has a flaw though. NH doesn't tax SS income:
New Hampshire is tax-friendly toward retirees.
Social Security income is not taxed.
Withdrawals from retirement accounts are not taxed.
Wages are taxed at normal rates, and your marginal state tax rate is 0.0%.
Public and private pension income are not taxed.
Where they get you: 9% room and meals tax. Property tax.

Buying property (and therefore paying property tax) in the state where you have domiciled in is another LEGAL loophole for not having to change your license and registration each state you spend more than 30 days in. TAKE that property tax proof with you because courts will throw out a charge against you with that document. My sister and her husband were long haul truckers out of Ohio. When they got to California they were ticketed for SMOKING IN THEIR PLACE OF WORK. WHAT? Anyway, the CHP officer waisted their time and caused them undue stress as they discovered in court the following week. They got the ticket thrown out because while it was true that they were in a corporate truck it had a sleeper cab and therefore it was also their place of residence.

Mercedes, I will be buying a motorhome for around $106,500. I live in California and have a CA drivers license and own a house, if I were to register my new motorhome in Florida using my cousin's address which their sales tax is 7% versus 9% in CA and the vehicle registration fee is probably less, do you see any problem doing this. I can save over 2K in tax alone plus license fee.
