love & really appreciate your videos. I'm so glad you aren't too chirpy. There are some channels where they just try to out-chirp each other & I just can't handle it, no matter how good the info is. Your info is honest & realistic & giving me a sense of whether I can do this or not.

I cant remember why I watched your first video, but I was HOOKED. I think my time has passed to do what you are doing, I am 74. But my wife is 55. But all my life I loved adventures and I appreciate the time you take to explain these things so people just starting dont have to learn the hard way. I hope you continue to have a wonderful RV life and keep reporting. I am in Cincinnati Ohio. I have traveled all over the world, but never got to take my time and LIVE when I traveled. Great video! The breakdown is extremely helpful. God willing, when my husband retires in 2 years (I’m already retired), we plan to sell everything & travel until we decide where we want to relocate. We purchased our RV & truck already a few years ago with that purpose in mind & they will be paid off by the time we are ready to go. With what your expenses are, I can see clearly that we will be absolutely fine. It makes me all the more excited about doing this. Thanks!

Thanks for the videos and honesty! We just sold our home to RV full time until my husband finishes his military career (grown kids and 28 years of service so far). We are in our second week and the RV site is $1K per month in VA, but we are stuck here due to Corona! Looking forward to getting to our next duty station in Texas where I've seen cheaper sites advertised. Your rates were great!

I've been living since September 2014 in my 33' camper and use electric for everything, and have a regular cable modem with 50 mb service. It costs me $240/month. I just bought a newer 5th wheel camper. I have two electric oil-filled radiators and one ceramic heater w/fan. It's cold out in winter but I'm still warm inside when it's -10 degrees out.

It means even more that John & Sage make these together, filling them with family love and light. Your hand-written card is to be treasured. Safe and wonderous travels! ~💜

Stacey, thank you so much for your lovely comment. Yes, we did one of those "let it all out" kind of budget videos with the exact intention of offering food for thought. We want to dispel the rumors that RVing is a less than $1,000 endeavor. Although it can be, it isn't always so. And that's ok! It's all about being true to oneself! And thank you so much for getting a sharks tooth necklace! We are delighted that you enjoyed it and humbled at your kind words. John enjoys making them and Sage enjoys "helping"! :-) Thank you so much for the well wishes. John & Mercedes 💚💚💚

Nice update. Interested to know how you keep track of all the expenses, especially the small daily, non-routine or non-recurring one-offs. Seems like it would be a lot of tedious organization. Likely worth it for tax deductions though. Very helpful to know what it can cost to live full-time. Love to hear the kiddo in the background keeping it real. Miss you and hope you're being patient with the best coast Thousand Trails -- they are slowly, but surely, working to upgrade and renovate. Try to fit in some campground reviews. Be safe, keep lov'n each other and make friends along the way. Love you all.

Regarding poor cell service, I use a weBoost as well in my truck, and it works great for a vehicle in motion. When you are stationary, a better option would be directional LTE antennas that you plug directly into your hotspot devices (if they have the ports). I use a Netgear LB1120 LTE modem (works with all US carriers for LTE service, unlocked) for home internet, with an external MIMO antenna that sits on the outside of my house. Much better signal than using a booster, and it uses multiple antennas for better upload/download bandwidth. There are endless options for this type of stuff, from cheap flat panel antennas for $30 to multiple element directional high gain antennas for hundreds of dollars.

I agree that heating the RV with electric heaters makes since given that you pay for electric at a flat rate at the parks, but please advise people that some RV campers have smaller gauge wiring and using 1500 watt heater can have some overheating risk to RV wiring. I would suggest an upgrade to 12 wire for one circuit for the electric heater or find heaters that use less say 700 watts.

  • @HolzMichel
    @HolzMichel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

wow guys! those are some pretty high costs, but at least you're being open about it and allowing us a peek as to how you're "roughing it" lol... what you're spending in a month would have been my costs in my slide in camper on my pickup for about a year.but then i didn't have a truck payment or camper payment either. that makes a huge difference.
if you can get out there without any debt, your costs will go down insanely fast. the other thing of course is the need for utilities. if you can get by without having to be hooked up for the majority of the time, you'll save an insane amount of dough. luckily the western states have a lot of public land where you can camp out. on federal ground (be it BLM or forest service) you're required to move every 14 days at least 5 nautical miles from the last spot you were in. while there are regular campgrounds on federal land as well, the move rule applies to those as well unless you're working as a campground host for the feds. then you get to stay for the duration of the season but will be required to leave when the campground closes for the winter.

Hi Scott, your cross country trip is on my bucket list.
John and Mercedes were on track to spend $40K for their first year on the road( $3300./month) , whereas you did the yearlong cross/country route, utilizing car & hotels for 25% of that, or $ 835.00 per month.... roughly $28. per day.
Is my math correct? Did you live “off grid” for extended periods? I would love to see your itinerary and travel tips... this is the kind of trip many of us would love to take. Thanks!

This is all great information. I don't spend nearly as much as y'all do, but I stay in one place longer and I don't travel as much. I almost always stay in a campground for a month and get the monthly rate of about $500 a month. I do eat out more than once a week. As you said, the RV life is very flexible. I use the AT&T unlimited data plan for $22 a month. I also use this to watch TV. That plan is not available now for new subscribers, but AT&T has offered it for new subscribers for brief periods for three different times. Maybe they will offer it again soon.

I just wonder how much freedom you have lugging around a large 5th wheel RV? You have to find a campground to park, and daily fees can be hefty. To go anywhere from the campground, you are continually attaching/detaching your vehicle. Sightseeing is limited to day trips from the campground. How many campgrounds have a convenient location? How much sightseeing can you do if you have to home school a kid? It seems like an awkward and less than free way to live.
I plan to do the same using a camper conversion. But it will be just me. I can park the camper van anywhere.

California just upped the fuel taxes on July 1st.
On a second note if you plan on keeping your RV for a while there are some really great Electric heating systems that can be purchased and installed on your RV that allows you to switch between propane and electric heating in the RV. Then you can use your heater every time your in an RV Park. This way your using the parks power and not burning your precious propane. Safe travels...

Morning Folks, You can have packages delivered directly to a Fed-X, UPS independent store in your location. Each store provides and actual address, not a P.O. Box, that you can ship too as you move around. Also, I have practically all my recurring bills and even truck payment billed directly to my American Express , I even did it with my mortgage when I had one. I pay one bill, on line, and get the points back which directly transfer to Amazon credit. Have a wonderful day. JJK

We saw soooo much, all the big stuff, but did stay away from big cities except Washington DC. Everything is so cheap(food, gas), when we left home, gas was $5/gal, milk is $5/gal, and eggs are $5/doz...ya'll dont know how good you have it down there!!! Saying that price again: $20,000 canadian.👍15k us.

Compare to those numbers to living in a home. Most people pay a minimum for $500 per month for their site but those who don't live on a budget pay thousands at KOA or other places. Some locations charge a monthly rate PLUS electricity and other service fees ($2,500+ per month is common). Use the Lasko oscillating electric ceramic space heater, designer series 6405 for about $45 can heat you out of a 30' single wide. Adding slide and you will almost need one ceramic heater per room. Using a metal sided RV will last you a LOT longer than a laminated side that is already starting to fail by the time it leaves the lot. True, finding a gorgeous location and WiFi is an oxymoron. I can recommend McAuthur-Burney Falls State Park in California and Rock Island State Park in Tennessee. For Veterans who qualify California has the BEST park pass for disabled Veterans called the Distinguished Veterans Pass (I've got mine). It permits me to stay FREE for life in the state parks (but not more than 14 days each year in a single park AND where space is available).

Great video I always like seeing the numbers of what it costs. Now I would like to see that video on healthcare cost that would be very interesting. Like you said the healthcare system is so screwed up.

Thanks for all the info. I love the fact you were upfront on financing the trailer and truck. That has been our hold back bc everyone says you should be debt free but I think financing is okay to just get started.

Very very informative video! This is the first time I've seen pure genuine honesty from full time RV'ers. No pomp and pageantry. Keep up the great videos! Thanks for sharing! Best Wishes! Tweet Tweet, Chirp Chirp!

I'm kinda thinking satellite internet service might be much cheaper and you would get reception just about anywhere. Add a receiver on the roof? It's worth checking into. God Bless.

Very true Thomas there’s no perfect amount of money to RV. RVing the way you want to will cost what it cost

To each his/her own Connie! Remember this is our biz now so we can write most of this off. If we were retired, we would not have financed anything. We have insurance that will pay off all debt if something happens to me. Love you Connie💚💚💚

@@RVOddCouple can you do a video about how you do tax write-offs? I'm going to talk to a CPA, but I'm confused about how you can write it off if you're using it for personal use as well. Thanks!
