How much breath do we need for Belting?

  • How much breath do you really need for singing high and loud? Not much at all! It is a basic misconception that loud voicing needs a big breath in preparation. To make a loud sound the vocal folds need to make contact for a longer time in each vibratory cycle - and breath can make that very difficult. It may even prohibit comfortable, efficient belting. Watch this video to see it in action!

Yeeesss, show us! Finally someone who does not talk about louder voice - more breath. Thanks for that fresh 'breath' of air 😊

omg thank you very much, it's incredible, if in belting you don't need as much air, is it the same in mixed voice? Isn't that much air needed?

this is amazing! I'd love to see a video on your & Estill's perspective of "supporting"/managing breathe, and if there is any mention of keeping the chest/ribs wide and using the pelvic muscles!!

One of Estill's operating principles is that "the air must respond to what it meets on the way out". Based on voice science rather than traditional singing pedagogy. Simplistically, when the voice is 'louder' the vocal folds are making contact for longer in the cycle of vibration and too much breath with undermine the efficiency.
