Real situations with parents making the effort to train. Watching successes and mistakes and discussing the training. Very helpful video. Thank you very much.
I love that the video has very little editing it’s a lot easier to follow along. Thank you for putting in the time and energy into making these videos!!
This is great. I have watched Harnessing the Hunter multiple times, but I could watch this kind of training hundreds of times and still learn something. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Emily, for this real world lesson! It is clear that these are compassionate owners who have been investing the time with you in training their pup! I saw the man taking notes too! Awesome! You really broke it down into do-able steps. How's Cloud doing? Thanks again for your detailed and excellent teaching! God bless you and your family!🐾🙏💕
I find myself saying ‘it’s just me again’ all the time to my dog lol..we have tons of birds around and he is super interested to make friends with everything that moves so this will be a huge help. It’s weird how the smaller steps even if they seem ‘easy’ help him get the idea. Thanks so much again!
WOW! This looks like a simple and effective way to deal with consolidated chasing behavior. I guess this is going to be super useful for a lot of dogs and dogs owners. Thanks!!!
Oh man, this is such a great video to show breaking up counter conditioning /look at that! I think I will send this to all my clients so they can understand more of the premise of what kind of training we'll likely do! (also, kudos to you for figuring out how to skateboard a bit for that!)
Hi Emily! My partner and I have been watching your videos for almost 2 years while training our 1.5 year old Australian cattle dog Zeus. We had no idea you lived in San Diego until this video. We would love to work with you somehow! I looked around on your website but didn’t see anything about in person training sessions. We would love more info on that if that’s something you plan to do more of here locally! Our dog has quite a few behaviors we are always actively working on but he is so smart and trainable! Thanks for this video! He is pretty afraid of skateboards and this helps a lot.
I don't think she really does private lessons as much anymore but there are a couple of trainers in SD with very similar qualifications and teaching styles. Look for KPA and CPDT certs
I'm so glad I found this page. Quick question. I have an almost 2 yr old mini Aussie. I did not train him properly/consistently and need to start from scratch. He is an amazing companion and I want to do right by him. Do I start right back at puppy basics or is there a better avenue for teenager dogs? Thank you
The video is great and helps my dish’s problem, instead of skateboards, bicycles and joggers, he goes nuts seriously nuts with the children who live next door when they’re playing futbol 😅 he is really. Ice with children but once he hears them he just runs to the fence and starts running from side to side, I have to figure out how I could train this for him to stay calm as I won’t be able to ask the children to stop playing futbol and come and train with me 😅 so maybe I’ll buy a futbol ball and train with that, but if you have any advice it would be great! Thanks a lot for all these accesible training videos ❤
Yeah defiantly get a football. You could also record the sound and then work with the sound recording away from your yard, first starting low and giving a treat for not reacting
Great video, and hopefully I can apply to my dog in other situations by breaking the behaviors into small steps. P.S. I thought I recognized San Diego!
Would love to see you work on the stuffed animal training with our dog. She turns into Kujo at the sign of a squeaker toy -- we can't let her near them -- she wants to tear them to pieces. Her prey drive is so intense. I watched the other video about your dog who killed the squirrels but would be calm afterwards... we have (luckily) so far avoided having an instance with a live animal but based on how she wants to tear apart a squeaker/stuffy I am worried that would be what she would do to a live small animal as well.
I suggest starting with something that she doesnt recognize as a toy. Like a sock or a scarf or dish cloth she ignores before moving to the stuffed toy.
@@kikopup yes - no - I was just more meaning that it would be more interesting to see as she is ( I think ) a much more challenging dog to train on that front than the example here. I think we could probably start with the stuffy or squeaker toy but with added distance (and no squeaking!).
I know this is an older video, but hopefully you will see this! I’d love to do similar training with my prey-driven dog for small critters and also sheep. Would you recommend not letting them play with soft animal type toys at home (tug of war, shaking, shredding etc.) or is that an okay outlet for them to have as they learn to distinguish what’s allowed to play with vs real life?
Any suggestions for a dog that is far more reactive to a skateboard? My dog wants to play/race every skateboard that goes past. If we are in the dog park and a skateboard goes past, outside of a fence, she runs after it and barks with pure excitement. If we are on a walk and one goes past she wants to race it.
hi i need help. i just got a 2 mos. Old shihtzu pup and i have a 4 mos.old shihtzu and its almost a week since i got the 2 mos.old pup my 4 mos.old pup non stopping a playfight i dnt think if hes bullying her. I need some advise please . Thank you
Is waiting for the dog to disengage before marking and treating a better approach than just starting with the Look At That game where you mark and treat with the dog simply looking at the stimulus/trigger? Thanks for the video!
I think that’s the first step. They look, you click and then treat. Once they get that down, The second step is they look at the trigger and then look back at you, and then you click and treat.
My dog chased a squirrel while my mom was walking her. This pull my mom off her feet and she hit the ground braking her toe. My dog is so strong, maybe shouldn’t have trained her to pull me on the skateboard.
Good video but I'd like to see it with a dog that really goes wacko when it sees a skateboard. This dog was way too chill vs some dogs who see skateboards.
Mowgli’s mama here! I assure you that he goes absolutely bonkers! He gets fixated even if he hears it from blocks away and has even tried to jump from the car(thank goodness for doggie seatbelts!) Emily told us that we must start at home because the trigger stacking is really low inside and builds up way more outside. This lil bit of chill is only because of being at home and us having started desensitization a few days before. And Emily being that awesome!
Unfortunately, the most important part of the video was at the end, when the dog failed and attacked the 'squirrel', and you didn't do anything about it, or tell us what to do.

What a treat watching you work with a client. Wonderful work!
thanks!
Emily is so amazing! Thank you so much for letting the world know that physical and psychological intimidation is NOT the way to go!

if they put in the time. Its super boring but effective
Love love love this. I love getting to watch you work with clients out in the real world.
Wow this is exactly the video I needed, thank you!
That was incredible. What a great lesson that touched on so many different things. Thank you for sharing! 😊
thanks!
Great and fun video to watch. nice to see the interactions and in person lesson with the dog and the owner. 💕

Pllllllease do a real life squirrel park lesson!!!

You could, but it really depends on his issues. I would focus on the major issues first. And put the less important things on the back burner.

Yes its totally fine. You can also play leave it get it games with a toy on a string.

This is what the dog does. It’s just because we started in small steps with the owners on it. Get a skateboard and practice in your house first.
Could you do this for barking? My dog really struggles with any barking even recordings he reacts to even when it’s really quiet
How would we do this if there is no one else to help us with the training?
Skate board infront of your dog on a mat, and wrap the string of the toy around a tree so you can pull it away from you and the dog.
Can you show a video training around actual squirrels please? 🙏🏻
