kyo is very versatile, he really sings like that. dir en gray is probably the least generic band in Japan, they have evolved a lot since their first album. As a genre it is difficult to clasificated, it will probably continue to surprise you with the way he sings. its like a japanese mike patton
Dir en grey has a massive repertoire spanning nearly 25 years - they've really switched up their style from album to album and even from one song to the next. Also - I've seen them live in concert. That voice is obscenely good. No effects needed, though he's had some issues with his voice over the years (it's very apparent in some live videos) definitely not an effect box, heh. He will at times remove the mic entirely and sing (or scream, depending on the song) without it entirely.
This song is from their 9th album ARCHE. Like River said, they explore different sounds in each album and this one plays a lot with different vocal techniques and is at parts more uplifting [and chaotic] than what they've done before. After seeing you react to Cage and Uroko I would be interested in what your reaction to one of their ballads would look like. I would probably suggest Conceived Sorrow or Vanitas. With how versatile this band is it's basically impossible not to find a song/era that you can appreciate at least musically - however, don't expect elaborate guitar solos or flashy songwriting that is only there to show off band members's skills. They would never do anything to break the flow of the story/emotion they try to convey with their songs [I'm writing this because of your feeling that 'something is missing' in the middle part. These drawn out passages and build ups that lead to nothing are placed into their songs deliberately and with much care]. Thank you again for the reaction!
No don't recommend Dir en grey to them anymore. They don't have much knowledge on effect box too, so they'll probably say the same thing again. And they won't understand their work either.
The song is not YOUR style? Don't worry, usually many people that listen to Dir en grey the first tries are not impress; I was one of those individuals. After 13 years as a fan, I would admit, I am not fond of all their songs, but there are some that I super like. To hear someone say they don't like a selection of this band that i know is a good selection because of the effort Kyo puts with his vocal ranges, it makes me wonder how those individual's brains function when they get so impressed with some dressed up girls? Well, don't think this band only has this kind of music. There is an original video for this song. UROKO Now, when this band has some very freaky/sick videos, they also have some other selections. They also have ballads, like for example Otarubi, Ain't Afraid to Die, Mushi, Zakuro, Akuro no Aka and many more. They also have some upbeat selections like, Yokan. This band is known for having some long selections, that range between 6, 8, 9, 10, and close to 16 minutes. I also, highly recommend The World of Mercy live with subs, by uploader Kaya. Vinushka live with subs by uploader Kaya. If you really want to understand the band you need to listen, and not just with your ears. Kyo the singer and lyricist writes the songs in a metaphorical way.

No, effect boxes. That's just him
All the different sounds of singing are completely and totally from the vocalist, Kyo, alone naturally without any add on sound effect at all.
