Great video; you confirmed my choice of the Yak based on the zip strip things; the variable bike locationing; and better lock and release mechanisms. Big thx for this informative vid.
I have the Thule Apex XT Swing. The straps are different on mine, (not ratcheting) I find bikes bounce a lot to the point where I stop and check with more than 2 bikes.
Good video. Thank you for posting. I'd like to know which one YOU like better?? Did one have more movement/play at the hitch connection than the other? (I'm leaning towards Yakima for my Bronco)
They both have the same amount of movement/play when in a closed position. However, when loaded with 4 heavy bikes the Yakima seemed to swing out and lock into position better. The locking piece in the Yakima is metal whereas the Thule is hard plastic.
Thank you for this video. You did an excellent job in giving an unbiased assessment of the two products. I am now much better equipped to make an informed decision when buying bike racks. Also, I've been educated on how to install the products. After reading many reviews, I've heard many pitfalls but never had a good visual as to what was actually taking place, until now. Again, thank you! I've heard that Thules are stronger and better built. What is your assessment after using both brands?
I’ve got a Subaru Outback and looking at a swing bar hitch bike rack . However I only need it for 1 bike ( 2 at most). I’ll be driving cross country and need something durable and secure. If they don’t make a 1 or 2 bike version, maybe I could mount a set of traction boards ??
Thanks for the video. I was looking at platform rack since I like those better. But the factory hitch I got with my Tesla is limited to 160 lbs tongue weight. I do like the ability to carry more bikes with these style racks. Still haven’t decided but maybe leaning towards the Yakima.
I saw some of this burned. As there are vehicles exhaust are located at the passenger back side . Ex. Santa fe Hyundai exhaust just toaster the plastic hinge. Why is this not being brought up by thule and yakima?
@@AutoSensation I almost bought this. I was very excited to buy it . I saw this in our local fb market . There was a picture where the hinged plastic cover was melted and burned.. For a short while. I did not think about it. Afterwards it kick in me search more for it. There I found other vehicles has the same burn plastic issue. Thule and yakima will not say this in the public. Otherwise it will hurt there marketing. Buying this is a gamble. Especially if your exhaust of the vehicles is in the rear right side. My vehicle is a acura mdx 2009. Has exhaust both sides. Very potential to melt the hinge of bike rack side hinged.. You can take a look of the search engine at Google. Thanks kindly.. I bought the simple one . Thule apex xt.. thar is the safest for the vehicle I drive for now.
It appears the Thule provides more spacing to prevent the bikes from scratching, but if I'm only hauling 3 bikes, it appears you can space them out better with the Yakima. What are your thoughts?
I like the Yakima with one reservation - it doesn’t seem to be able to fit 4 adult bikes, whereas the Thule seems like it can. I see a lot of reviews on REI about the lack of space on the Yakima - how it’s really a 3 bike rack. What do you think?
Yes. I would agree. The Yakima seems just a little harder to fit 4 bikes. You really need to find the right spacing to fit four. On the plus side you can easily move the mounts to accomodate more easier than Thule.
I know it said This thule model can’t tilt down when it’s loaded To have access to the trunk. But can we still do it anyway? Or the mechanism won’t allow it ?
Don't forget the safety issue of it being hard (or nearly impossible) for others to see your brake lights and or turn signals, something that has bothered me for years using my bike rack(s). Here's a DIY solution - th-cam.com/video/uqFtju1Ggyo/w-d-xo.html - and an off-the-shelf solution - autoracklights.com/order - I am affiliated with neither, just sharing.
Please don't tell me you drive around with that small bike clamped with just one strap. You're bound to get someone killed when that lone plastic strap fails, which it will.
Does anyone know if you can open a Jeep Wrangler tailgate with a spare tire on it? They open in the same direction as the bike racks. The rear spare tire on my Jeep is about 10" in depth. Thanks.

Great video! I especially liked how you showed your solutions for the youth bikes, as I am currently dealing with the same issue.
Thanks. Glad you found the video helpful
Thank you. Very thorough description and presentation. You covered all the salient points to assist in making a purchasing decision.
Glad this was helpful
I will go with the Thule because of the weight difference . Thanks
I have the Thule Apex XT Swing. The straps are different on mine, (not ratcheting) I find bikes bounce a lot to the point where I stop and check with more than 2 bikes.
Thats not good. What kind of straps do you have?

Both are built well but I would agree that Thule is slightly better built. Thule is what I am currently using
@@AutoSensation Thank you for your reply. I was leaning towards the Thule.

Yeah. That would work.
Great video, thank you. Helped me pick the Yakima over the Thule
Same here. Yakima seems the better choice
11:56 get ready for that "locking speed knob" to fail, it is common issue
Thank you for showing the bike frame adapter.
Your welcome.

Yakima…by a mile! Great video!

Good to know. I never knew that or had that in mind. I believe most hitch are high enough not to cover or the exhaust are facing downward.

nice video. It will help me a lot to understand the difference.
Thanks. Glad the video was very helpful 🙂
la parte de abajo el enganche se rompe a mi me paso no soporta 4 bicicletas se me abrio en carretera
hola, llevabas 4 bicicletas MTB adulto? cuánto pesaban aprox?
Thank you - what bar did you like for womans and kids bikes - the thule bar seems overpriced and non adjustable
In this video I used the Thule. I have both Thule and Yakima. Don't which one my wife prefers.
Great review. Thank you.
Thank You
Hi,
Your kid’s bike is 16inches or 20inches?
16 inches

The mechanism won't allow it. To access the trunk you will swing out to the right with the bikes loaded.
Does the Yakima rack bounces a lot? Another TH-camr review saying it bounced up and down quite a bit over bumps.
Yes. They both actually bounce a bit.
Will these fit a stumpjumper evo ?
It might not. The little opening near the rear suspension might be too tight.
Very helpful thanks 👍🏻
Thanks
Very Good Tutorial.. Thx
Thanks. Glad this video was helpful
Decent Bike Rack
That front fork, being on backwards, on your wife's bike hurts my brain. Oh, we went with the Yakima.
Can you drive around with the just the hitch all the time legally?
With just the hitch. Yes I'm pretty sure. I don't see why that would be illegal
Which one do YOU prefer???
Thule Apex XT Swing
@@AutoSensation thanks for the prompt response!
Is not being able to see the plate a legal issue?
In some states yes

What is the Thule retail at about thanks great video
Please don't tell me you drive around with that small bike clamped with just one strap. You're bound to get someone killed when that lone plastic strap fails, which it will.
Nope. Thats dangerous. Besides the strap it is locked in with the cable lock.
Yakima!!!

No..... it will only have enough space to open about a qtr of the way.
