There is a mod to make the text bigger. I would also recommend the 4gb patch as there is a memory leak which causes crashes. Save often! You may also look into making the UI bigger. The combat is definitely a learning curve. I’m so excited for this play through! Some tips: you don’t have to play the whole game in tactical view (zoomed out) you can zoom in. It’s once you select an enemy you don’t need to click on them again, you just need to activate your skills until they’re dead and then click on the next enemy. 🙂
I think the gog released fixed the mem problems and all that, I tried many version, but the latest gog, I played half way though and no crash at all, win 10
Thanks for the information about the mod, I tried DA 1 out, the font is too small and the controls and the player response selection are very cumbersome, I deleted the game after 15 minutes 🤣 but I'll try again 🙂
It is so cool to see so many people getting into Dragon Age during the past year. As someone who has been playing these games for over a decade, you're in for a fun ride!
Considering Bioware made KOTOR and Baldur's gate that makes sense. Dragon Age was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate according to some of the old Devs.
I am SO happy that you are starting this amazing series! I literally just started another playthrough...as a Mage. SHOCKING I KNOW!! Also, I adore Baby Cullen in this game! Without spoiling the other two games, let's just say the glow up he has is SO FREAKING GREAT!
I'm sure you've figured it out by now in your playthrough, but in case you haven't. When you click on an ability (i.e. Arcane Bolt) it will automatically be cast against your current target (the one with arrows pointing at the red circle underneath it). When you click on your target with the sword icon, it means you want to attack with your weapon. That's why when you clicked your ability, then clicked your target, you just went and punched it. If you do not have a current target, when you click on your ability, your cursor will change to a bullseye when hovering over a valid target. Click again to cast the spell. I believe this will also set that enemy as your new target. Personally, I find it easier to use the keyboard to cast spells, that way I can cast in between movements fairly efficiently and I don't have to pause as often. But several other commenters are correct, pause is your best friend. Use it often to issue commands, especially once you have a full party. Glad to see your heart has recovered enough to let you be hurt again. Looking forward to watching more shinanigans.
I. Am. READY!!!! ❤ So excited to watch this playthrough 😊 Love this game! This series! Can't wait to experience the journey with you! Mass effect was a blast, very much looking forward to this ❤
Couple of small tips: 1. I'd recommend pausing the game more often when you're in combat. It should make things a lot easier. Whenever you're looking for another target, or deciding which spell to use next, pause the game so you're not being attacked while you make up your mind. - If the pause button isn't the middle mouse button already, I'd suggest mapping it to that. I find that helps enormously. 2. You don't have to play in overhead mode. You can zoom in. From memory, you can just scroll in and out with the middle mouse wheel.
I recently started watching your ME playthrough and loved your personality and takes. I will enjoy doing the same with DA, both being some of my favorite series of games.
Taash controversy is dragging the game down. I still enjoyed the game quite a bit. There are things I hate within the game but the game its self if fairly alright. Every Dragon Age that gets released since Origins has been dog walked for something on its drop date. I think the general combat is better than inquisition. I think the down grade in subclasses is a crime. No great sword is also a crime. Qunari change was lame. Modern era talk in the game was a little cringy sometimes.
@ I’ve finished the game done all side content, put in at least 70 hrs into the game(i don’t know exact nr i deleted the game right after the credits rolled). Ahhh, so what you're saying is that I have 4 games to convince you to stick around for my *charming* personality and sense of humor??? (ps, the Uncharted series was my first youtube exclusive playthrough and the full playthrough is up and ready for you to binge)
As a mage regular attack is for when you have a staff which will do a ranged attack, (this is why you keep punching things), at the start you just have spells so need to cast them to attack with them.
use the scroll to zoom in for WASD controls (hold right mouse button to turn the camera when in that mode) make sure your staff is actually equipped haha, if not you'll use your fists you can use abilities by left clicking a power on the hotbar, which will turn your cursor into a bullseye symbol, then left click on a target. but the more common and easier way is right clicking to 'lock on' your character's focus on one enemy, and normally that means auto-attacks. when locked on you can simply left click your spell on the hotbar and the character will target that target. a lot of the tme what you were doing was activating a spell, then breaking out of it by moving manually or activating auto attacks by clicking again
Yeah people can hate on Xbox all they want but their backwards compatibility is amazing. I have Origins on PC and Xbox but it's getting worse and worse on PC while getting better every generation on Xbox.
Most important ability in the game, hold down tab to see what things you can interact with / loot you can pick up. I've never really thought about it before, but one approach to the game would be to play every origin up to...well that would be a spoiler, but it's not much longer than where you are now, and then pick the character you want to continue with. I definitely think you should play each origin story at some point.
1:08:57 There is preset difficulty for Persuade/Intimidate in dialogue. It just doesn't show the number like in BG3 for example. Glad you're starting with Origins!
Great first video. People already said about mod for bigger text. You will get a hang of combat, but where you were doing it wrong is-you clicked on a spell and then click on a character but it's not how it works, click on an enemy is auto attack, so you were constantly canceling your spells. You select enemy first, then click on a spell and let it play out (and yes, they all have a cooldown like in mmo). I would suggest not to reload that snitching decision, but it's up to you.
1. Pressing TAB reveals clickable items in the area. 2. Drain Life takes life from an enemy and passes it to you. Better to use it after taking some damage, to help with healing.
Thats worth a sub - I love when people honor game series by playing through older titles. Yes its old and a bit clunky but imho it holds up and the dialogues make up for it. Enjoy.
As far as the BG3 comparison Bioware made the original 2 Baldur's Gate games and Dragon Age was their spiritual successor. Oddly enough I actually think BG3 took more inspiration from Dragon Age Origins than it did the original Baldur's Gate games. Especially when it comes to companion interactions, camp setup and dialogue options and camera angles.
camp and cinematics: yes, especially given Greg Lidstone involvement as Director of Animation (he specifically started at Larian with BG3), check out his CV (all the old-school Bioware) other things: more inspired by originals actually, especially party-interactions (more so than people would like to admit, the game draws a lot from original writing), or by DOS2, a lot, especially when it comes to specific companions writing. There are some by-proxy similaraties to DA:O ofc, given what you stated about "succession".
@nickrubin7312 I mean more in presentation than tone or style. There's no CRPG including DoS that looks closer to BG3 than Origins and vice versa. It almost feels like other modern CRPG devs are trying to recapture/copy the old while Larian looked to pick up where CRPGs left off(Origins being the last CRPG until the new wave) and looked to innovative. It's why I think they've found major success while the others haven't.
Omg omg omg basic is just playing through my childhood lol so excited to see what you choose!!!!@ Cullen is my sweet bby boi 💓and Duncan is daddyyyyy bark bark bark
I really hope you just continue with this play thru It feels strange to start over cuz of choices in the prologue but that said I 100 feel this is going to be a fun journey to watch
so excited for this!! IMO dragon age is kind of like mass effect and baulders gate had a baby, and the result is what will eventually be basic's fav franchise. i also didnt get into dragon age until years after it came out, and while the Origins graphics are rough for today's era, it more than makes up for it with hilarious writing and snarky party banter. can't wait!
I'm a gamer girl. Dragon Age: Origins was my first introduction to games and it was and still remains, my favorite game! I've replayed it hundreds of times. Alistair/Noble romance, Morrigan/Mage romance is the best.
@@MetastaticMaladies I did try it! My Warden was a female dwarf. I just couldn't get into the gameplay aspects, and since I don't have a gaming PC to get all the mods, I will just live vicariously through Basic!
@@karienlauster9809 Oh I see. Well at least you got to experience Inquisition, it’s probably the second best in terms of story, but imo it has the best game play. It’s probably my all around favorite.
I'm really looking forward to this later today! I played Dragon Age 1 and 2 before I got around to trying Mass Effect. Out of the 2 franchises, I actually like Dragon Age more, mainly because I prefer swords to guns, lol. But also because of the lore. There are thousands of years-worth of interesting events and stories that get talked about in books and songs throughout the series, and have yet to be explored. The combat system in the first game leaves A LOT to be desired, due to how outdated it is, but it gets completely overhauled in the 2nd game, so you'll have to be patient. REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN!! The game has some glitches in it that will have you falling through the ground for eternity, whole dialogue sequences and cutscenes getting skipped, or enemies attacking you from inside walls. The glitches don't happen often, but when they do, they're usually at the most random moment.
I love this game, one of my top 10 games of all time... In fact I replayed it just last year, I played a Female Human Noble Warrior... for 1 main reason
Yes I am so excited for this! Love Mass Effect, but Dragon Age: Origins is one of my favorite games of all time. Combat is obviously tricky at first (we've all been there 😂) and the graphics were outdated even back in 2009, but the story and the characters are 👩🍳💋 "Is that one of the dwarfs?" No that's just Zaddy Duncan. He gets more and more appealing the older I get 😅 I do recommend reading all the codex entries that pop up along the way, maybe offscreen if you prefer. The devs spent a lot of time crafting the lore of this world and it shows in the codex entries. And if you are so inclined, I'd love to see you play the other Origin intros after you finish the game. It gives a lot of perspective into what else is going on in Thedas, though some are better than others imo. At any rate, I hope you enjoy the game!
I'm so excited! This will be a ride. Surana is such a cool background for roleplaying. Double opressed ftw. I hope for some tasty drama in the future. 🙏☺️
I started with Dragon Age Inquisition as I got it free. Went and plated DAI, Awakenings and then DA2 (which is my favourite). Went onto ME Male Shepard/Kaidan are my OTP. Then onto the only game I played on the PC because it's only available on there and that was Star Wars The Old Republic.
Honestly I would almost recommend going through all the origins and picking the one you like but it is a big time sink. they're just good. Helpful hints as other people have said the bigger text mod helps a lot 4gb patch good as well. Looting tip is tab brings ups Objects you can interact with. Combat hint is while in combat you can hit space to pause the game and grab companions and give them direction so they're not just running around.
I know myself pretty well and I think I would have gone elf mage for a playthrough regardless! Currently trying to get the bigger text to mod to work, but unfortunately the first 3 eps were all filmed without! Hopefully I get it working for ep 4!
asking "are people persecuting" in dragon age: the answer is "yes in general and most ways yes." but picking elf mage you get your question answered pretty quick. this isn't judgement its a fun background story to play. thedas sure seems like its full to the top with persecution.
I really want to replay Dragon Age: Origins 🙂, but unfortunately, since I only have a PS5, I don't have access to it. They need to create a legendary edition for Dragon Age, like they did for Mass Effect, so I can replay Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, and Dragon Age: Inquisition with better graphics.
@@anon2752 It's funny that they didn't include DEI bullshit in Mass Effect Legendary Edition. They could have easily done it back then, but they didn't. All three games in the Legendary Edition were not changed; they were exactly like the original versions, only the graphics was improved.
@@WarNeverChanges9191 Not exactly, they got rid of some of the miranda fanservice camera shots in ME2. But yeah, unchanged for the most part. I doubt the current studio wearing bioware's skin would leave Origins or DA 2 unchanged. Lots I could see them doing to make it fit in line with the abomination of VG.
Once you've finished the game (or at least progressed a bit into the actual game) you should play through the other 5 Origin stories. Not only are they all very different and a lot of fun to play, you'll also get a different perspective. The origin story you picked has quite a bit of impact on NPC reactions and even possible endings (some details of your ending depend on the origin story you picked. You can now get the Mage specific iterations but not the ones tied to the Daelish Elf, City Elf, Human Noble, Dwarf Noble or Dwarf Commoner origins); this enhances the replayability of the game quite a bit. The Human Noble origin story in particular can even carry over to the standalone expansion pack, Dragon Age: Awakening, which is not a DLC in the typical sense, it's a good old fashioned standalone expansion taking place after the events of the main game. In the City Elf Origin story it even makes a difference if you're playing as a male or female character (for the other origin stories gender doesn't matter). Edit: Combat in Dragon Age Origins is Real Time with Pause (or RTwP). Even though it looks like as if it is in real time like Mass Effect that is actually not the case, there are combat rounds running in the background which means your character cannot spamcast spells for example, you can only attack when it is your turn (same for warriors and rogues of course). This also means that some of the animations are just that - animations. Not all animations are actually tied to real attacks or activities.
hey, i am half way through the video and noticed your interaction issues. clicking on an enemy here is doing an auto attack on it with your weapon. full circle below the target means you selected it, so you just need to hit your ability buttons (1 or 3 so far) if you wanna activate the spell. after you useds them they have a global cooldown, so you'll need to wait a little, indicated by the black foggy overlay, that is counting down till the colours returned and the skill is usable abain. hope that helped if not already solved later in the video...
Dear, i saw a mistake when you fight. when you click an ability, dont click again to enemy. because it makes your attack to simple attack not ability. just click ability when your intended enemy already selected-targeted. it will work as you wanted :-) have fun out there 🥰🥰🥰
Glad to see the old, true, Dragon Age games get some attention. Especially after the absolute travesty that Failguard was. Anyone who enjoys a good story and compelling characters would enjoy the DA or Mass Effect trilogies, I think. Not to mention anyone who enjoys a proper RPG will definitely enjoy DA: Origins.

This is great because I just recently started playing this for the first time and I’m loving it. Probably one of the best rpgs I’ve played
Thats worth a sub - I love when people honor game series by playing through older titles. Yes its old and a bit clunky but imho it holds up and the dialogues make up for it. Enjoy.
welcome in!!
As far as the BG3 comparison Bioware made the original 2 Baldur's Gate games and Dragon Age was their spiritual successor. Oddly enough I actually think BG3 took more inspiration from Dragon Age Origins than it did the original Baldur's Gate games. Especially when it comes to companion interactions, camp setup and dialogue options and camera angles.
camp and cinematics: yes, especially given Greg Lidstone involvement as Director of Animation (he specifically started at Larian with BG3), check out his CV (all the old-school Bioware)
other things: more inspired by originals actually, especially party-interactions (more so than people would like to admit, the game draws a lot from original writing), or by DOS2, a lot, especially when it comes to specific companions writing. There are some by-proxy similaraties to DA:O ofc, given what you stated about "succession".
OHH THEN IM EXCITED!!
Omg, am I dreaming? Dragon Age, mage and lightning??? I foresee it’s gonna be great big run Basic! Good luck ❤
Basic im so happy to see you play this, you will fall inlove with this game just like i have. Such a classic. ❤
Welcome to the world of Dragon Age!!!!
I've played this game all the way through 11 times - just roll with your choices, it will tell a good story.
so excited for this!! IMO dragon age is kind of like mass effect and baulders gate had a baby, and the result is what will eventually be basic's fav franchise. i also didnt get into dragon age until years after it came out, and while the Origins graphics are rough for today's era, it more than makes up for it with hilarious writing and snarky party banter. can't wait!
yay!!! I am so excited for this playthrough!
I'm a gamer girl. Dragon Age: Origins was my first introduction to games and it was and still remains, my favorite game! I've replayed it hundreds of times. Alistair/Noble romance, Morrigan/Mage romance is the best.
I'm slowly but surely gets Ng more impressed by BWG's British accent. I look forward to a girl forcing me to watch you on Bridgerton one day soon ;)
HAH! Yeah in my dreams 😂
Having only played DA2 and Inquisition to completion, I look forward to seeing where it all began.
Origins is arguably the best as story goes, should give it a try sometime, there’s so many different origins and stories to see.
Definitely one of the best games ever
The glitches don't happen often, but when they do, they're usually at the most random moment.
babygirl are you playing a mage?! 😭 WOOHOO! can't wait
when given the chance to build a character, I'll ALWAYS go Elf Mage if possible!
Dragon Age already!? You spoil us.❤
I love this game, one of my top 10 games of all time... In fact I replayed it just last year, I played a Female Human Noble Warrior... for 1 main reason
Swooping is Bad.
i’m SO EXCITED!!!!!!
Yes I am so excited for this! Love Mass Effect, but Dragon Age: Origins is one of my favorite games of all time. Combat is obviously tricky at first (we've all been there 😂) and the graphics were outdated even back in 2009, but the story and the characters are 👩🍳💋
"Is that one of the dwarfs?" No that's just Zaddy Duncan. He gets more and more appealing the older I get 😅
I do recommend reading all the codex entries that pop up along the way, maybe offscreen if you prefer.
The act your wage line and the tranquil was pretty golden. HA
I'm so excited! This will be a ride. Surana is such a cool background for roleplaying. Double opressed ftw. I hope for some tasty drama in the future. 🙏☺️
If Basic is gonna do one thing: it’s play an elf mage. COUNT ON IT
ALWAYS!!!
Welcome to Dragon Age Basic! There's a world full of fantasy husbands ready for you to romance!
The way she turned escorting Duncan into a meet-cute 🤣
was it not supposed to be????
@@basicwitgirl It was it was 😅 just a bit more eyebrow-waggling than I expected
@@JayTohab Basique the elf has been stuck in this tower for her whole life with only Jowan as a friend!! She’s gotta make up for lost time 😂
I started with Dragon Age Inquisition as I got it free. Went and plated DAI, Awakenings and then DA2 (which is my favourite).
Went onto ME Male Shepard/Kaidan are my OTP.
Then onto the only game I played on the PC because it's only available on there and that was Star Wars The Old Republic.
Basic, you are a menace 😂
BASIC!!! IM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO GET TO DRAGON AGE……..
Please enjoy the ride, its magical (despite the first games buggy and crashy coding)
i love the original dragon age origins is fantastic
lolol; Basic Snitch Girl :D
asking "are people persecuting" in dragon age: the answer is "yes in general and most ways yes." but picking elf mage you get your question answered pretty quick. this isn't judgement its a fun background story to play. thedas sure seems like its full to the top with persecution.
i'm ready to sass my oppressors!!
not the best choice of initial spells, but afaik you can respect later anyway.
Everyone goes on about the Dwarven origins or city elf, but human noble is my favorite origin.
Actually Nobel human my fav origin. like the betrayal game of throne and the ending is so much amazing.
For me - Noble dwarf. Makes whole Orzammar situation feel personal and much more detailed
They meaning a different studio hopefully, I dont want modern bioware touching the old games.
You can use WSAD to move in the third person view - I would play this more like a normal RPG rather than CRPG. You will have a lot better experience.
this playthrough made me load up the ole Xbox. Veilguard bestie I’ll be back later
Also subscribed for you,i kinda like your reaction, keep up the good work gal
@@charleswiltshire21 welcome! Maybe I’ll be able to make a Veilguard believer outta you eventually 😂
Honestly Elf Mage feels like the canon choice for every game in this series (except maybe Hawke)
And this is why I prefer to play in a console and not pc
Yeah normally this kind of game thrives on PC but they really dropped the ball with its optimization.
😂😂 oh my goddd watching you fumble with the spells controls made me laugh and cringe so hard
I KNOW 3 SPELLS!!! BUT LEMME USE MY FISTS INSTEAD!
imagine me talking about this video like that one guy talking about banana bread at work
BUT BASIQUE'S DRAGON AGE PREMIERE?! AT F****** WORK, DUDE?! HELL YEAH!!!!!!
@@basicwitgirl HELL yeah.
No! I'm not ready! PAUSE! I've finally just got around to.watching Son's of Anarchy!
Congrats on a great start! You avoided one of the first pitfalls for new Player: the Violent VO set! It can become irritating very quickly.
I really wish they would remaster this game in UE5!
hey, i am half way through the video and noticed your interaction issues. clicking on an enemy here is doing an auto attack on it with your weapon. full circle below the target means you selected it, so you just need to hit your ability buttons (1 or 3 so far) if you wanna activate the spell. after you useds them they have a global cooldown, so you'll need to wait a little, indicated by the black foggy overlay, that is counting down till the colours returned and the skill is usable abain. hope that helped if not already solved later in the video...
basic sees blood mage and instantly goes 👀
IM JUST LOOKIN
My favorite game
Dear, i saw a mistake when you fight. when you click an ability, dont click again to enemy. because it makes your attack to simple attack not ability. just click ability when your intended enemy already selected-targeted. it will work as you wanted :-) have fun out there 🥰🥰🥰
You have a beautiful spirit ❤️ ✨️
Glad to see the old, true, Dragon Age games get some attention.
Especially after the absolute travesty that Failguard was.
Anyone who enjoys a good story and compelling characters would enjoy the DA or Mass Effect trilogies, I think.
Not to mention anyone who enjoys a proper RPG will definitely enjoy DA: Origins.
You can increase the Fontsize by playing at 1080p. I am sure you play at 1440p or something. I don't remember the text being so tiny...
just switch to 1080p.
1:27:47 Once you beat this game, I definitely recommend playing through the other five origins.
I have played Dragon Age origins ultimate edition,Dragon Age 2,Dragon Age inquisition deluxe edition it is fun
What if you get like a really cool magnifying glass and affix it to the bottom of the screen? (SO EXCITED!)
U know an rpg is old when they say: Character generation 😅🤣 it really is cute!
First Zaeed now Duncan, I’m starting to see a pattern 😂
