Word of advise, on these subies, it's way easier to just "remove" the engine enough to get to the clutch. Don't have to disassemble 1/2 the car, and you're working on top of the car, way more comfortable than doing this under the car...
I’m about to start a clutch job on an 02 outback. It’s looks like pulling the engine will be a lot easier. Is there anything I need to watch out for? I’ve never wrenched on a Subaru before. I’ve worked on a lot of stuff before but never a Subaru.
I just did a 15 Impreza no turbo, so no intercooler and such, but on the first try, pulled the engine in 4 hours. It took about 12 to get it all back together including chasing parts, but we ran into problems with the old throughout bearing was modified with a sleeve, so it was oversized, we we had to find another that would fit. The root problem was that the clutch was too heavy and we blew a hole in the fork, so we put an OEM clutch back in, not nearly as heavy, but it doesn't slip, so there is no real need for the extra heavy clutch, and if you are putting in a heavier clutch, you may want to investigate putting in a heavier fork.
After couple clutch change in Subaru, removing engine is easiest way to do it and you can also replace valve cover seals when engine is out what is pretty impossible otherwise.

I seen people say it is just easier to pull the engine. If you know what you are doing, change the clutch put it back in less than 2 hours. I seen one guy have the engine pulled in 45 minutes.

I have a question. I just had my engine replaced by Subaru. 2014 wrx. They also installed a new clutch for me. My clutch was from time of purchase the car unable to hold the clutch to launch the car or even take of fast. After the new clutch I have the same issue. I want to think it's the master and slave cylinders. But is it possible it's the transmission.
Your clearly not a mechanic pal, the clutch would be 100% smooth as the day it left the factory.. the friction plate hadn’t even worn down to touch the rivets so no risk of nasty gauge marks also didn’t look blue like it had gotten hot whilst in the process of slipping.. just for a final reason this vehicle was not fitted with a DMF (Duel Mass Flywheel) therfor not requiring replacement due to excessive movement noise or good practice. The flywheel is perfectly serviceable so stop repeating what you once heard from some common knowledge that everyone says, So many internet mechanics out there, it’s funny to read people’s options when they think they know what they’re talking about when you work on cars every day like I do 😂
Why not just pull the engine? Even with the turbo/intercooler, et al it's a hell of a lot easier and quicker, maybe an hour or so to pull it and another hour to reinstall. You waste a lot of time fooling with drive axles, cross members , the entire exhaust train, transmission mounts. One person can do it from start to finish by pulling the engine in less than three hours.
i felt that way, but youve gotta give people a chance.... when i overlooked his unbelievable good looks, his fleet of amazing cars, his dream job that brought him to relocate to USA, and marry a beautiful women , then when i ignored the fact he lives next to a beach......well?.......i started feeling better and started to like the guy. Its just a normal WRX with 220 hp. That's still plenty to have fun with. Nothing wrong with non-STi. Not everyone can afford or wants to have the top trim level WRX STi.
Edd was the show!!!
And Paul!.
Yes
Sixteen seasons of Edd. No one is complaining.
No, he was half of the show. Better half though

Just remove and refit the engine clutch on the rear a lot quicker and easier designed around wrc done loads this way

Interesting. And Edd could have demonstrated that really well. What a missed opportunity. Next time you do one with hein sight make a video:)
Usually do the timing belt at the same time surprised ed didnt

Take the engine out with the clutch pack still bolted on, you can do a major service while it's out, like on a Beetle.
You are lucky the top trans pins weren't stuck. Steel on aluminum is always fun. Happens alot to Subaru's in the US.
You are the best Edd 👍🏻🙏🏻
This car has not had an MOT since 2011, its long gone now.
MOT expired on
24 September 2012
It was exported to Germany. That's why you don't see it's history on gov.uk anymore.

im also wondering why ed didn't machine the flywheel for a new surface?
No machining of the flywheel? Could risk uneven wear of clutch disc and shuddering if there are high spots on the flywheel.
Clutch plate worn like that, driver still can't it,not important.
