Jon, nobody writes like you do. You help keep me on track to remember that we're headed Home. Like in "4:12", sometimes I start thinking that "all we are is material." But then I listen to your stuff and it makes me realize: that kind of thinking is "nonsensical" - because "we are the lost souls with a second start following the Builder home!" Thank you.

The doctor says I'm dying I die a little every day But he's got no prescription that could Take my death away The doctor says it don't look so good It's terminal Some folks die in offices one day at a time They could live a hundred years But their soul's already dead Don't let your spirit die before your body does We're terminal, we're terminal We're terminal We are, we are living souls With terminal hearts, terminal parts Flickering like candles, shimmering like candles We're fatally flawed, we're fatally flawed Whenever I start cursing at the traffic or the phone I remind myself that we have all got cancer in our bones Don’t yell at the dead, show a little respect It’s terminal, it's terminal We are, we are living souls With terminal hearts, terminal parts Flickering like candles, flickering like candles We're fatally flawed, we're fatally flawed [x2] [Spoken:] Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust For our days here are like grass We flourish like a flower of the field The wind blows and it is gone And its place remembers it no more Naked we came from our mother’s womb And naked we will depart For we bring nothing into the world And we can take nothing away For we bring nothing into the world And we take nothing away... We are, we are living souls With terminal hearts, terminal parts Flickering like candles, flickering like candles We're fatally flawed in the image of God
Oh my oh my.....I have followed Switchfoot fo about 12 years.....at varous tomes the music has been at the epitome of where I was at.....this song is the crescendo...amen amen amen.....The Lord Riens...God Bless you and yours in the coming year....and may He send His Army to keep you all Safe. Deb
Love ya Jonny- saw you in Lynchburg, VA- what a show. Thank you for all you do for the Kingdom. You are making a difference. You are real, that's what attracts others to Christ. Keep pressing on brother. Tell Keith we all said "Keeeeeeeeeeith" here in Lynchburg ;o)
The instrumental on this song is soooo beautiful, makes me think of snow coming down in an open Glen surrounded by trees which is a complete contrast to the lyrics but maybe not so much of a contrast 🤔
Yep! It's important to stay active and not to be sitting around all the time. I have 70 years coming up in November and I'm always busy with something. Mostly I like helping others.
This song hits almost all the hooks I crave in a song. I really really like it! I does remind me a lot of Coldplay which is my favorite band. The only thing missing is creating a bit more tension with some higher vocal notes in the chorus. I know that's so nit picky but that would make this one of my all time favorite songs rather than really really great.
perhaps instrumentally but if you compare lyrics, there is no similarity... jon lyrics: deep, moving & brilliant... coldplay lyrics: "I'd rather be a comma than a full stop"... no competition whatsoever...in my opinion anyways =)

+Jeannie Aromea youre obviously not, cos Jon would never say shit like what you just did
+Jeannie Aromea Hate to rain on your parade, but it smells like trash advertising in here. Nobody writes-- or performs-- like this dude.

Love this song, such a haunting tune and meaningful lyrics!
The doctor says I'm dying
I die a little every day
But he's got no prescription that could
Take my death away
The doctor says it don't look so good
It's terminal
Some folks die in offices one day at a time
They could live a hundred years
But their soul's already dead
Don't let your spirit die before your body does
We're terminal, we're terminal
We're terminal
We are, we are living souls
With terminal hearts, terminal parts
Flickering like candles, shimmering like candles
We're fatally flawed, we're fatally flawed
Whenever I start cursing at the traffic or the phone
I remind myself that we have all got cancer in our bones
Don’t yell at the dead, show a little respect
It’s terminal, it's terminal
We are, we are living souls
With terminal hearts, terminal parts
Flickering like candles, flickering like candles
We're fatally flawed, we're fatally flawed
[x2]
[Spoken:]
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust
For our days here are like grass
We flourish like a flower of the field
The wind blows and it is gone
And its place remembers it no more
Naked we came from our mother’s womb
And naked we will depart
For we bring nothing into the world
And we can take nothing away
For we bring nothing into the world
And we take nothing away...
We are, we are living souls
With terminal hearts, terminal parts
Flickering like candles, flickering like candles
We're fatally flawed in the image of God

I wanna cry to this beautiful song
My fave part is the choir part near the end, its a beautiful bridge leading to the image of God part.
Love your songwriting Jon!

COLDPLAY
Is it just me or does Jon's music seem like it's inspired by Coldplay?
