It’s fine for me to unload his salary, but to retain 17% and dump two draft picks for a gamble of a 2023 first rounder and a low 2025 first round pick doesn’t make any sense to me.
The retention is likely Vegas saying they would not take his contract on without it. We do not know what exactly happened behind closed doors, but Hertl waived his no move clause for this trade. It makes me think about Burns and Grier doing a favor to the old guard. At the end of the day Hertl wanted to play for Vegas

Hey Brodie, Yeah, a tough day for the Teal Faithful to see another beloved Shark leave for greener pastures but, I completely agree that this was absolutely the right thing to do for all parties concerned. I can't sit here and say that I saw this trade for Hertl to Vegas coming but, honestly the Sharks two greatest assets remaining were Hertl and Couture. Both guys when they are healthy would be welcome additions to ANY team. I thought Couture might be the one to get traded but, the injury situation this season probably nixed that possibility and now that we have no other salary retention slots available it does not seem likely that we will be able to trade Couture assuming he is open to the idea. As far as foreseeing a trade for Hertl? Well, his clean out operation muddied that a bit but, it sounded to me like fairly minor stuff and that he was close to coming back when the trade happened. Assuming that was accurate I think trading Hertl makes a ton of sense. Given Thoms's history with his knees (I will never like Dustin Brown for what he did) it seems likely that his NHL career may not be as long as it might have been. At least that seems a reasonable assumption. Given that history and his age as you pointed out by the time we gain some inertia and synergy with our new young core of players developing Thomas will likely be in his mid 30's and quite possibly at the end of his career or at least of his ability to play at a high level that he is accustomed to. Given all those things it does make sense to let him have a chance to chase down a championship before he has to hang 'em up and he really cannot do much for us given our current state except mentor the young talent we are assembling which would be valuable but, do we have others who can fill that role? Yes, Couture, Granlund and Nico Sturm to name 3. Could Thomas do us a parting favor and allow us to use his value to accrue more prospects and picks? Yes, he can and he did. I don't know if that was the way it was presented to Thomas but, he seems such a caring and honorable guy I can imagine him thinking it was a chance for him to help his first and favorite team one last helping hand as he leaves the Tank as a Shark. Many players in Sharks history have been liked by the fans but, only a handful are beloved and Thomas is one of them. We will miss him and who knows? I am worried that this was a hasty move by Mike Grier that happened under too much pressure at end of deadline period, and think that if Grier had the night to think this trade over, he would not trade Hertl. Perhaps he thinks that Edstrom can replace Hertl in 5 years after much more development. Grier is upsizing the Sharks and trading for bigger players, drafting bigger players, and trading away his smaller players to change the team identity and give it much more weight and hitting. It will still take years of development and much improvement in Sharks developmental staff to make this team a Stanley Cup contender in 5 or 6 years. It is just so long for Sharks fans to suffer and get buried in depression by the chronic losing. I think that trading away so many players and Hertl in particular made it more likely that Sharks will get very high draft picks this season and next season or beyond. I am wondering how coach David Quinn will react to the cards dealt to him and how he plans to finish the season without cracking up in despair. He may need strong medicine to fend off the nausea of being identified with such a losing team. Grier traded more players than I thought he would, but the returns were not great it seems as it was a buyers market in the end and they were not buying his losing Shark UFAs. I hope he signs Granlund to an extension and keeps him even if he is a smaller size player and not part of his plan to upsize the team.

There was no upside to this move. Grier ruined us for the long run, he will be fired in 1 or 2 years and we will remain directionless for another decade. This is one of the worst trades I have ever seen.
I'd trade an underperforming player on a bad contract in a second for whatever I could get. Technically 2 first round picks and 6 million dollars off the board? Thats pretty great return. Remember this, Vegas also has to have some benefit to the deal we cant just fleece any team that we want. This isn't NHL 24 GM mode
@@insanum666 Hertl was not really underperforming since the sharks overall roster made his stats worse. It was not a great return either since another team in the offseason might have let the sharks keep both those 3rd round picks or they paid the 1.4 mill the sharks have to retain. I doubt the sharks get 2 firsts though but no way to know. Hertl should have never been give that bad contract in the first place by Doug Wilson because the team was already bad. I feel as though the VGK were one of the only teams to ask for him. But now I'm speculating! Lmao As Hertl is an older player with maybe a few good years left in him before his decline, it's good for the sharks to trade him now. The VGK want to trade for a player that will have a few good peak years left. And not someone at the end of their peak going into a decline. It's what the Sharks used to do when we were good. I have an issue with the 3rd round picks, I feel as Grier maybe could have squeezed his way around those picks somehow but since they are 2025 and 2027 we have plenty of time to recoup those picks and I bet Edstrom will be a stud 3rd line center
@@insanum666 There is many unknown factors from Hertl asking to be traded "as he approved the trade" and how afraid is Grier of Hertl getting injured. Grier might have been able to keep both of the thirds had he traded him in the offseason. We do not have the info though but the 6.7 mill of cap room and no injury risk is better for a rebuilding team. Some fans who are upset at Grier do not have his side of the story. If Hertl did ask for a trade my view would change on that trade. Even paying a player around as good as Hertl 5 mill a year and a 1 year contract where that player is told he will be flipped at the deadline would be better than a long contract like Hertl has. The Hertl contract did not help the sharks win or rebuild.
Wow this trade came completely out of the blue! Even up in Toronto, none of the sports networks or radio talk shows had Hertl on any of the trade bait lists. Ever since he scored those 4 goals against the Rangers as a young rookie, he has been a special player - he was the 1st that I remember to try that "through the legs" trick shot in a game. It upset so many, now thx to him it is commonplace. Good luck to him in Vegas!

BUT - the Sharks are snakebitten, have you heard that Couture's injury may end his career? Hope for the best, plan for the worst is my motto ...
@@kenjackson6256 Couture retiring will help the sharks cap situation though but sad way to end it. A rebuild should have been years ago when doug wilson was still here and martin jones contract was fired. The sharks still pay cap money for jones. Musty just scored a game winning goal recently.
A desperation move by the Knights, who have lost four in a row and are clinging onto the final wildcard spot in the West. Hertl has been a fine player and citizen, but that contract will age badly, so wise move by Mike Grier to shed it and move on.
I see the benefit for SJ despite them having to carry 17% of his salary, but I don't see the benefit for LV on this one. For LV to break even, they would need Hertl to more or less match his career performance each and every year, and they're starting off with him while he's out for knee surgery, and, oh yeah, he's 30 years old. It seems like a great trade for SJ.
It sucks that Hertl will be on another team. Nothing will upset my stomach as much as seeing Pavelski in a Stars jersey. Hertl has missed significant time with injuries in recent seasons and the team needs cap space.
Las Vegas is literally the name of the city the Golden Knights play in, so why is that a problem to call them as such? Also, there is no city by the name of “Bay Area” so what you are saying makes absolutely no damn sense.
I give props to Hertl for wanting to stay in San Jose and the rebuild when he signed his big deal, but I'm happy for him to play some meaningful hockey again. I just hope Dallas saves Couture and reunites him with Pavs for a couple more runs. Man I hope w/e Grier is planning doesn't turn out to be a 10 yr plan of pain x.x
Please Please don’t call the VGK Las Vegas Golden Knights they are the Vegas Golden Knights no Las involved. I thought you were better then the jerks that think Stone getting hurt again as planned to circumvent the cap. Stone’s recovery could take up to 6 months to fully recover.
Shaking my head Grier. Trading hertl I can accept. But, to Vegas🤨 hmmmmm I know we get picks and all but I’d hate to give them another Cup thanks to giving them Hertl
Honestly Grier doesn't give a F about the sharks fanbase. He's been given the task of rebuilding this team at any and all costs. It just absolutely kills me to see all of the younger homegrown players getting traded away for extremely low draft picks and 2nd rate prospects. I have no excitement for this team anymore and it's best that I just forget about this team for the next few years.
This dude is clueless, Stone has a lacerated spleen, you think he did that conveniently to free up cap space? It's ridiculous that people think like this.
Great takes Brodie. When Tomas came up, I thought we were looking at the next Jagr. Until Dustin Brown accidentally on purpose took his knee out. I just wish he had been traded to the Rangers or Maple Leafs / out of the division. Vegas?!? No!? Really!?!? That hurts, a lot GMMG. Best of luck in your Quest for the Cup Tomas!
Absolutely sick to my stomach over this one. Came on to comment, but can’t even watch the video I’m so upset. Hertl was the heart of the team & the closest thing we had left to a franchise player. Once again Grier gets rid of the guy you should be building the team around. With Logan being out, Hertl has been the de facto captain all season long. Hertl was instrumental in those exciting come from behind wins on the roadtrip in December. Hertl has always put the pressure on himself & delivered. Back in the end of game 5 of round 1 our last playoff run, Hertl guaranteed the boys would be back at The Tank for game 6. He followed through on that promise by scoring in OT Vegas sending the series to that infamous game 7. Grier seems hell bent on dismantling everything that DW put together, both on & off the ice. This team has no identity. Anything that made them the least bit exciting, fun, familiar, or palatable is now gone. In the past 6yrs, we’ve managed to get rid of every All Star & leading scorer on the team. Is it any wonder we are where we are?? When the NHL Network announcers are left speechless by the trade, you know it’s not good. I actually have a trip booked to see the Sharks in a couple wks(season tix but live in WA). I really have no desire now. Was looking forward to seeing Simek on the Barracuda, & now that’s gone too. Just no happiness associated with them now.
Terrible decision to trade Hertl to Vegas. I understand the trade concept of getting him off the books and the Sharks rebuild timeline. At least trade him to an Eastern Conference team. No justification to allow Vegas to get even stronger, with Hertl. The return is not great either. Hertl wasn't going anywhere, trading him could have waited. I believe Grier hit the panic button on this trade. It didn't need to happen at the deadline. Not like Sharks are needing the cap space next season. Regarding Mark Stone, I doubt he is seriously hurt, he could probably play right now, Vegas clearly discovered the loophole with the LTIR and are leveraging it to their benefit. The NHL should investigate the Stone injury, but I doubt they care, Vegas having a good team is a big revenue stream for the league that they cannot get in any other city.
6.7 mill of cap room for 6 years is a lot to use on a rebuild. This is like when the knights traded MAF for nothing but used his cap room to trade for Jack. The sharks need cheaper players who they not worried about injuries.
Dont blame Vegas they are doing nothing wrong and theres no reason to hate Hertl he was TRADED . San Jose shouldnt hate knights they were handled one of the worst phantom penalties later and helped lead to winning a series . Im not a knights fan BTW . Having said that i love your podcasts .
And they wouldn't of needed to worry about that if they won Game 5 or 6. Plus, them choking against SJ inspired them to actually go all the way and win the Cup years later. 2019 is in the past now. And the Knights aren't being blamed for anything. They'll pay the piper later on, once they need to sort out the cap.

I think I am of the mind that no one would be interested in him in the offseason. I feel as though the VGK were one of the only teams to ask for him. But now I'm speculating! Lmao
As Hertl is an older player with maybe a few good years left in him before his decline, it's good for the sharks to trade him now.
First the A's and now Hertl
I’m convinced Plattner is deliberately directing Grier to run the franchise into ground to get out of town or sell out.
#moneypuck
Hertl scores a goal in a playoff spot clinging game for Vegas.
Whole Fortress cheered for him, it was loud!
We'll take good care of him.
Had a pretty good playoff run for you guys too
You do good work Brodie love your reaction piece.
Heartbreaking.. but needed to happen rn for the sharks. Also the 3rd rounds picks didn’t need to be included. Those picks made this trade seem bizarre
Vegas welcomes Hertl from Bay Area, you guys can take Raiders back, good trade!
This sucks because I love Hertl and want to pull for him in the future but how can you do that when he plays for the Knights?
Go Knights Go!
@@SS-iv7wv Yea go to H…
This one makes me want to throw up and kill my self at the same time 😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭🥺🥺🥺
Pretty much. My only jersey was Hertl.
I’ve been with the Sharks for fifteen years now and in all of my years I can’t think of a trade that stings more than this as it was such a blindside
As Las Vegas local the Bay Area keeps on gifting the community of Southern Nevada.
😂😂
Too Soon
😂😂😂💯🤘🏾
You are out of line but right
Wow this trade came completely out of the blue!
I remember that game like it was yesterday man.
What an animal.
He deserves to be contending
That 20 dollar bet on Vegas for the cup is looking mighty promising about now. Mark sneaky stone.
@@SinCitySharksfan702Yup, poor Marty Biron's final game in the NHL! Dont worry, he is doing great up here doing analyst work for the Sabres and radio work for TSN! As for VGK, there are forever linked with the Sharks - they played the franchise's 1st exhibition game the night of the Mandalay Bay tragedy! We all remember the comeback playoff victory at the Shark Tank, players and a coach swapping places and now Hertl.
@deanhirasawa1414 - Jonathan Cheecho did a through the legs goal while on the Sharks in the 2004 playoffs against the Avs. "th-cam.com/video/aa6hJ8WIvrA/w-d-xo.html"
Hey at least Hertl will have a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup now. The Sharks ain’t goin anywhere for at least a few more years
Brodie doesn’t even try to mention Vegas but his ties to the Bay has all the trending sports news centered in Nevada recently it seems 😂😂
Go get em Tomas!
Where do they get the money from?
How many doug 8x8 specials are left?
Just Couture's 8 x $8 (through '27) and Vlasic's 8 x $7 (through '26), although of course they're retaining some salary on three other deals following trades (and the Martin Jones buyout).
Adding insult to injury by retaining salary for SIX years...
One of those knights picks has to be good.
@@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiantswith the way the Sharks luck has been lately? ...
@@kenjackson6256 The sharks gain 6.7 mill grier can spend on 1 year contract vets he can trade for a profit or on multiple prospects. Plus the sharks do not have to worry about hertl being 30 and injured.
The 2 first round picks if either becomes a half a point a game or better player this was a good trade.
@@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiantsBest case scenario seems to never come out that way for SJ. I've been a Sharks fan from the beginning, I went to Game 6 1994 Playoffs against the Wings and attended the away game watch parties that series at the Tank with 1200 fellow fanatics.
Vegas will make it and if they are 8th seed will make quick work of Vancouver
Just a salary dump... and in the Division...smh
With a 6 year retained? No way.
DAVID EDSTROM must be a beast.
you guys aren't going anywhere, might as well start the rebuild.
@@SS-iv7wv true
I see the benefit for SJ despite them having to carry 17% of his salary, but I don't see the benefit for LV on this one. For LV to break even, they would need Hertl to more or less match his career performance each and every year, and they're starting off with him while he's out for knee surgery, and, oh yeah, he's 30 years old. It seems like a great trade for SJ.
It sucks that Hertl will be on another team. Nothing will upset my stomach as much as seeing Pavelski in a Stars jersey. Hertl has missed significant time with injuries in recent seasons and the team needs cap space.
Gotta get your facts right first
2 years ago Stone played the last 10 games of the season.
Embarrassing for Grier
It's NOT Las Vegas Golden Knights. It's the VEGAS Golden Knights. Would you like it is people called it the Bay Area Sharks? I don't think so.
Brodie has always called them "Las Vegas", it's an inside joke.
its the name of the same city lol
💯
Nah you’re in Las Vegas not Vegas
Las Vegas is literally the name of the city the Golden Knights play in, so why is that a problem to call them as such? Also, there is no city by the name of “Bay Area” so what you are saying makes absolutely no damn sense.
Haha , this trade is insane .
Going to be hard to cheer for the Knights to win one for Hertl ngl.
I heard hertl asked to be traded.
In the McManagers I trust. Always.
Go Knights Go!!!!
Please Please don’t call the VGK Las Vegas Golden Knights they are the Vegas Golden Knights no Las involved. I thought you were better then the jerks that think Stone getting hurt again as planned to circumvent the cap. Stone’s recovery could take up to 6 months to fully recover.
According to espn each team swaps 2 3rd rd picks.
they can't keep getting away with this
Whats next? Sharks to Salt Lake?
to Vegas is just salt in my wound T______________________________T
Why do we get stuck playing part of the salary that needs to stop when we do these stupid trades
Retain salary (all slots now filled) and give 2 picks 😅 Grier must have money on VGN
Some think Hertl asked to be traded and others think Hertl being hurt rushed this trade.
This Sharks team is so bad an AHL team would destroy them.
Nah they wouldn’t
Go Knights Go ! Back to Back
Shaking my head Grier. Trading hertl I can accept. But, to Vegas🤨 hmmmmm I know we get picks and all but I’d hate to give them another Cup thanks to giving them Hertl
Hertl would never win the cup if he stayed on the sharks .
Lets give Vegas the Sharks too... let them have 2 teams
Salt Lake City is looking for an NHL franchise…
Stop lol They already got Henderson out there.
Uuuuugh💔
Stone is out for season. Whether he will be ready for playoffs is unknown. He may not be able to return at all.
Booooooooo..... booooooooooo... bummer af...
The world that we live in, of course they will boo!!! I’m already booing him. Burning 🔥 my jerseys now!
This came out before that was reported. lol
Hard being a sharks fan these days. Ugly teal helmets and shorts, bad players, and now this. Is John Fischer a minority owner or something?? 🤔
He’s a Vegas Golden Knight!! Not Las Vegas Golden Knight!
Las Vegas Golden Knight is correct English. You sound as if you are a non-native English speaker so we can help you.
Triggered over saying the proper term. XD
And as far as I'm concerned, y'all best not let Hertl down.
We will take care of him Brodie just like adin hill
Hill was more of a Coyote than a Shark. He played in Arizona longer than his time in SJ, but okay.
Go Knights Go!!
Cause Stone wanted 2 back surgeries and a ruptured spleen, Brodie your better than this
The spleen report came out DAYS after this vid. Chill lol
The spleen came out weeks before. It was confirmed before the video.
Just like Meier, this one stings bad. But I understand the process. Just wish Dougie hadn't of signed Hertl to that extension in 2022
Tomas deserved better than the sharks
Dont blame Vegas they are doing nothing wrong and theres no reason to hate Hertl he was TRADED . San Jose shouldnt hate knights they were handled one of the worst phantom penalties later and helped lead to winning a series . Im not a knights fan BTW . Having said that i love your podcasts .
Nope, that penalty in game seven was legitimate and Las Vegas deserved even more penalties.
And thr Sharks once again didn't get a fair deal in return. Wtf
Everyone needs fired. From Grier, your old buddy Tom, all the coaches and the team should be sold.
Bring back Jay Woodcroft!
Go be a fan of another team if you can't handle the rebuild. We aren't the Sabres or Coyotes. XD
