I think “refreshing” really is a great way to describe this album- it feels like emerging from something dark into clear, cool water. There’s an undertone of overcoming hardship shifting to relief and joy that really hits you. Especially with what she’s been through with her career, this album felt like a new era for her- reclaiming her voice and relationship with music. In addition to the subtle details that you brilliantly highlighted in her songs, the most remarkable thing about this debut is that Chuu debuted not only as a solo artist, but also as a totally self-managed entrepreneur and because of this she was involved in all the details (music, lyrics, production, so on) of her album, MVs and international tour. Apart from that, the pressure and uncertainty to which she has been subjected since her lawsuits against BBC execs and her debut are reflected in both ‘Underwater’ and ‘Haul’ MVs and that is why in 'Haul' she is accompanied by two dokkaebis, the big one to take care of her and the other to bring her fortune and light. This worked because in the first week her album sold close to 60K copies and surpassed 16M views here on YT, making her one of the youngest and most successful entrepreneurs in the industry
As a big Taeyeon fan, I got a lot of those vibes from this record - obviously with Chuu’s super unique style and tone. Personally this was my favourite release this year, it was such a joy to hear her beautiful voice again 🥲🙏
