Are you still paying someone else to change your oil? J&P Cycles' merchant and resident mechanic Patrick will walk you through an oil change on a 2012 H-D Sportster. This will be similar to an oil change on rubber mount Sportsters from 2004 and up. Did you find this video helpful? View more like this on J&P Cycles' TH-cam channel: th-cam.com/users/jpcycles2
Oh heck yeah... I change oil on Mopar, Hyundai, Subaru, Kawasaki's Suzuki's, Yamaha, Honda's, Ducati and by far the easiest oil change ever is the Harley. Great design. Many many pro liter bike aficionado's down talk Harley, but their design in certain areas is superior to other makes. The oil and air filter placement is in easy reach, the battery is easy to get to and you really don't need fancy tools for typical maintenance like oil changes, batteries and brake pads. Sooo easy. Changing out the brake pads took me a few minutes because of the floating design. The rear suspension took me about 5 minutes to do as well. Amazing age proven design.
@KR Maybe Ninja easy, but you still need a socket and ratchet. Not so here, just a screwdriver, or if your in a pinch, a dime. Ha! I changed the oil on my Yamaha YZF R1, what a PITA!
I have added a "T" fitting inline with the oil return line. After I drain , refill and change the filter I clamp off the return line between the T and the tank. Fire it up till the oil coming from the fitting in the return line runs clean oil. Then I plug the T off and remove clamp on hose to allow oil back into the tank. top off and I now have a complete oil change. Sportsters retain a good quantity of dirty oil in the sump that will just mix with the new oil if changed the conventional way. When I spend $12 per qt for top quality synthetic I don't like to mix dirty oil with it.
You're still going to have old oil mixed regardless of what you do. In every engine. Every time. If it makes you sleep well at night, cool, but completely unnecessary.
A mechanic that knows what he is doing. If you watched others and thought you needed to bleed air from the drain hose... just follow Patrick's video, this is how an oil change is done.
Couple things I do: I ride my XL 1200C 10-20 minutes to warm up the oil and get particles in suspension and make it drain faster and more completely, I remove the hose clamp before pulling the hose plug or else the clamp can fall into the drain pan, I remove the seat to prevent oil stains when filling and topping off, I made an aluminum scoop to slide under the oil filter to catch 95% of the oil filter drippage, Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic 5qt jug is at readily available at Walmart for $25, I use 1 qt of Mobile 1 V-twin 20W-50 (wet clutch safe) for the primary case $8.99 at Advance Auto, oily chrome filters might not get tight enough hand tight so I go 1/4 to 1/2 turn past hand tight with a wrench. Oil change interval for sportsters is every 5,000 miles for the engine oil and every 10,000 miles for the primary case. I am thinking of going to 10,000 miles on the engine oil since switching to full synthetic.
Very nice, very easy, just bought a 2016 1200 custom Sportster. Came from very fancy Harley dealer, this is Ontario our prices higher than USA 9400$ has 26000 khm, looks perfect, still have foot of snow but was out 2 hours today. Little disappointed that dealer delivered bike to me with jet black oil, doing oil change tomorrow
Thank-you, my 1st Harley and I just wanted to see someone else do it so I'd know what I was getting into or out of, lol. 2007 Classic so this will get me there.
This is ace - cheers. Should the bike be warm before you start or is it supposed to be done cold? My old Brit bikes should be warm, but my Beemer should be cold.
I'm not an expert but I would imagine warm would be best since that's when the oil's the thinnest...but then again, cold oil has the best chance of already being drained out of the passages.
Where did you get the digital gage from? Also aren’t you supposed to ride the bike for about 10 to 30 mins to get the oil up to operating temps before you check and add more oil since the oil will Expand?
what type of speedo/tach was that cluster? how much and where can i get one? lol id like a tachometer just for simple peace of mind. i take my harley on highways often and would like to know where my RPM is at without lookin at the phone thru a diagnostic device
I still have my 2001 1200C and believe me it is this simple. My oil drain line is actually routed to the frame and it in my opinion is better since the hose is not hanging. I have 30,000 miles on it is still my daily driver. Doing the primary is just as easy. For oil 3 quarts does it. Always pre load your oil filter. My baggers are a little more complex.
Great video! Tips and tricks, I'm not a fan of a dirty bike. Looking around on oil draining found a video that took a news paper and put it under the oil filter. Or a flexible plastic or rubber if kept to use again, but news paper just as easy just make sure it has a shine to it. This way oil will not absorb as fast.
So 2 quarts then check it. But basically 3 from what I just watched. Great video thanks for the tips. Pre filling the oil filter is, in my opinion a must!! Anything with engine oil should get the oil pre filled during an oil change to prevent a possible dry start. Helps the oil pressure build a few seconds faster then a complete dry filter does.
I lay my XLH on its left on a piece of wood to remove and replace the oil filter. I lay down my XLH over a wooden stump to the left side to remove and change the oil filter
Thanks Patrick. It seems easy enough. I am going to try to change the oil and filter myself now that I have seen the video. I have 2150 miles on the bike so it's almost time.
I have a 18 1200 Custom. When I change my Oil and Filter, I use an open(Partial) bottle for the filter. And 2 full quarts in the tank. Run it a few minutes. Add until the oil shows about 1/2 way in the Operating Temp zone. I'll check and top off if needed next time I use the bike. BTW, I use Bosch Premium Automotive filters on mine.
Helpful video. I plan to tackle some of the maintenance myself.... All your videos are appreciated. Was I the only new Harley owner that had a hard time with the oil cap dipstick to pop in flush. LoL you made it look so easy. I'm getting better at it .
Question? Some say to run clean oil through the filler until it runs clean oil from the tube. I never have and after this I see it isn't necessary. Thanks for the video!.
Great video. I'm new to Harley's, I was surprised to see you check the oil level with the bike leaning on the kick-stand. With all my previous bikes you have to have the bike upright to get an accurate level. Is it OK to do it the way you did? Thanks
This is a great video. Thank you. I have a 2003 HD 883 XL custom. It only has 2800 miles on it, but need to winterize soon. Will I need to change oil before it rests for the winter?
i have one of those fluid recovery things i use for sucking engine oil out of dipsticks on some euro cars i wonder how much i might be able to get out of resevior ?
I always clean the hose plug, clamp, and end of hose good with spray brake parts cleaner. I stuff some rigs under the filter up against the engine before removing it. I use filters with a hex that you can get a socket on. I use more spray brake parts cleaner to clean off the filter mounting flange, and to rinse off all the oil that got on the engine cases. I use Vaseline to put on the filter gasket instead of oil. IF you choose to pour some oil in the filter before putting it on, DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH. It makes a real mess. And you ABSOLUTELY DO need to tighten the filter with a wrench. Not a lot, but definitely more than hand tight. If you don't, you'll probably be cruising down the road when the filter falls off. Hopefully you will feel that hot oil hit your left leg and shut the engine off immediately. But that issue can be avoided by simply properly tightening the oil filter. NEVER start the engine with only 2 qts. oil in it. Great way to destroy your engine. ALWAYS put at least three. When you are done, the oil level should be at the UPPER line, NOT halfway between the two. It takes between 3 and 4 qts. to get it where it is supposed to be. This guy did just about everything wrong. I have been an H-D mechanic for 36 years.
First HD and you all say 2-3-4 qrts. WTH, show capacities with oil filter changed and if to check while on side stand or vertical. LOL to the video dude and you Gerald. Over tighten the oil filter, LOL vs. hand tight.
loved this video i however learned that the Sportsters and Vrod models need to be up straight when you check their oil levels due to their dipsticks not being like the twin cams
My sporty has sat for a while, half stripped down and i was going to drain the oil before pulling the oil tank and motor out for a frame chop, and noticed my tank was pretty light and empty. I was thinking it must be why they say to run the bike first. But how do you drain it if you cant run the bike?? Does the bolt on the bottom of the primary work on a sporty for that?
So the oil drainage plug doesn’t have a magnet on it! What is collecting all the metal swarf from the pistons stopping it recirculating around the engine with the oil?
I have a 2005 sporty that unfortunately do to circumstances has sat un-started for a few years. This will get me started on getting it back going. It will also need a new battery and possibly tires. What else should I look for or do to get her running in good shape again?
Hello my name is Arthur I ride a Harley 883 Sportster 2007 I live in Australia I was watching your clip on U tub how to change the oil .. thanks for the hints ... I over filed my bike . And I have oil every were ... The top of the oil pop out .... I have two Q.. No. 1When you check oil did you have the bike strait or leaning on the rest ... No 2Also when you pulled out the plug out to drain the oil do you need to put an o ring ? Because the guy that sold me the oil and the filter gave me this little O ring ... Regards Arthur Sent from my iPad
Check the oil level with the bike on the jiffy stand. The O-ring is for bikes with a threaded drain plug, not sportsters. It will work on your primaru drain plug though, so keep t for when you do that service.
I've read that a common problem is that Harley specified 3.6 quarts for a long time, and it's actually 3 quarts. I was told that 3.6 quarts only applies to a brand new engine.
I just purchased a 2005 Harley Sportster 1200. I had to replace the rectifier after riding it home so that led me to think that this person probably has not done any maintenance. Checked the oil and it is black so I'm going to change it but I also would like to do the fluid that goes in where the clutch heard are at. What is the easiest way?
So I've seen videos where others let a lil of the new oil drain so that it purges any air out...I didn't see you do that, is it even necessary, or are you already accomplishing that by removing the oil cap to start with...?
That was nice & easy. Is there a specification for the oil filter used? Like thread size etc or it's just regular filter available in the Market. Thanks much.
can you explain why the service manual on my 21 iron 883 says oil capacity is 2 quarts for oil change but everyone ive talked too and every video says 3 quarts overall? when ive done oil changes always been 3 quarts to the midway/full mark on dipstick
Hope this isn’t a stupid question, but I switched the air filter and the first time I attempted to turn it on it struggled a little bit. Is that normal or will it continue to happen

hi john here gonna change oil in 2007 XL 50 1200 sporster looks pretty straight forward
Thank you for showing us how to do this!
Can the bike be on the kickstand or does it have to be straight up
So is does the transmission an engine oil shear the same fluid on a 2017 883 Sportster?
Doesn't the oil level have to be checked with the bike upright as opposed to leaning on the side stand?
Shouldn't the oil level be checked @ engine operating temp (hot)?
yes
Is that an after-market speedometer? or stock H-D...
Manny Castillo it's aftermarket, sporties always have the analog gauge stock
that's stock now...

What is size of oil filter and of which bike i can install it like hayabusa or cbr 1000 oil filter is same for harley sportster 1200
Does the older Evo have 2 drain avenue?

Putting the fill cap on can be tricky. Doesn’t always go in so easy, any advice?
I just bought a 2004 XL1200 C.. Do you check the oil level with the bike leaned on the kick stand? Looks that way in your video... Thanks..
Yes.
