    T-2000 was a heavy bulky racket that had a trampoline effect, how they volleyed with it
    Ike this is amazing. Your arm would be tired by third set.

    Thanks. King always had a little sour grapes about this match, saying there were too many questionable line calls. Cheers.

      @thomasmiles340 BJK can recall every line call she felt went against her but has no recollection of those that went unfairly in her favor.

    This is the first time I've seen BJ lose a match gracefully, she even went across the net to congratulate Ann.
    In the end I think pressure caught up to BJ, she hadn't lost a singles match at Wimbledon since '65, otherwise there's no reason to explain her collapse after winning the first set.
    Luv the hairdo on BJ, she reminds me of Ms. Fisher, our elementary school librarian

    Watching these highlights, you would be forgiven for thinking that BJK won easily.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@denisecasalino9295 it's original BBC footage. The reason why it's good quality is because the BBC, like most other European countries, used the PAL TV system. It produced much better quality pictures because it had more pixels. American TV stations used the NTSC system, which produced noticeably worse quality, blurrier pictures because it had a lot fewer pixels.

  • @th8257

    Billie Jean King said Anne Jones was the most underrated player of the 60s. Anne Jones said that she was hugely respectful of what Billie Jean achieved for the women's game, but noted that "Billie Jean always made sure there was something in it for her". There was a bit of a joke in the tennis world that Anne Jones was perhaps a bit too large breasted for tennis. Apparently when she won the Italian Open, a newspaper headline said "Anne Jones carries all before her". Nobody was quite sure whether it was a joke or just a very unfortunate use of words.

    • @TheVerbalVolley
      @TheVerbalVolley ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is obvious that whatever Billie Jean she did to further the cause of women's tennis would be of benefit to her as well, which was what Ann Jones was implying by her statement. There was no shade intended. They were the best of friends, as witnessed by the warmth of their greeting of each other after Ann won the championship match.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saying somebody is self interested is not a compliment. Particularly in the tone of voice that Anne Jones said it. She was letting us know that there certainly a side to Billie Jean that was quite avaricious, as was highlighted by the fact she ended working for one of the major tobacco companies.

  • @stefan33uk

    The quality is better than the 1990s us open videos! Can someone explain the evolution of tennis racquets to me? Here they seem to be playing with metal but wood was used into the early 80s?

    • @th8257
      @th8257 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The metal racquets they're using here were very early attempts. They were notorious - incredibly difficult to control. A lot of players hated them. Billie Jean King moved back to wood later. The metal racquets of the 60s here are best viewed as very rough pioneers. There was a lot wrong with them. About the TV quality - it depends a lot on which country the TV network who recorded it was based, as TV networks in the USA and Europe used different standards. For years, the USA used something called NTSC. It produced noticeably worse quality pictures because it had fewer pixels. Most of Europe used the PAL system which produced better quality. I'm guessing this was BBC footage, which would have used PAL. It doesn't have the slightly blurry picture that NTSC pictures did.

    After Wade lost rather badly to Pat Walkden in the third round, Great Britain put it hopes on Ann Hayden-Jones. Still only one of four lefties to win the title: Jones, Navratilova, Kvitova, and Kerber. Jones did not defend her title 1970 as she had retired.
