Urban wants a sequel just as much as we do.
Sadly it will never get it didn't make enough money back but maybe that's for the best maybe it's one of those films that doesn't need a sequel.

There's been talk of a TV series for a few years, and the owner of the rights to Dredd says there's still hope.

Oh yes! A brilliant film! Stayed pretty true to the source material.Karl Urban absolutely killed it as Dredd. Almost criminal that this didn’t get a sequel!
Not just him, the entire cast was top notch. Ma-ma is one of the greatest villains ever (specially for the relatively little screen time she actually has). The kind of strong, independent woman you can't find in a film anymore.

If any film deserved a sequel, this one did.
Karl Urban is completely up for a sequel. Of course he is, because he's a great guy. Given this has found a sizeable cult audience since its release, we may see another someday. Don't rule it out!

I legitimately spent a year of my life watching the "Incidendiary" scene and associated "I am the law" speech at least 2x a day. I regret nothing.
As, indeed, you should not.
Dredd follows the law to the letter. Their suspect is being held for questioning and punishment. He has no legal reason to shoot him. Dragging him around for the whole movie is a great way to highlight how, despite the brutality of the law and Dredd, he still follows the rules
The judges sentence punishment in the field and administer it when necessary. Assuming Anderson's telepathy is admissable which I assume it is being that it was the basis for her sparing another person they could have convicted then they have enough to convict the man they're holding of triple homicide. Which is likely a death sentence in Megacity. In that case if Dredd wanted to he could execute the man and he would be completely following the law by doing it which is why he allows Anderson to make a decision about his fate. Had she decided to kill him it still would have been within the law. Dredd is intending to question him for the purpose of further convictions but he has more than enough to kill him and still be following the letter of the law. So either or was an option.

@@Cookieboy70 Right but then he goes along with Anderson not convicting the hacker because she can presumably 99% read that the hacker was also a victim. Dude committed crimes and broke the law regardless of whether he was a victim but they leave him alone because she's 99% sure he was put up to it. Granted that's extenuating circumstances but I somehow don't think that would matter much in Megacity or to Dredd.
@@jackcoleman1784by that point in the movie the tone had changed and she knew both mindsets of the perp and the victim. She figured she had failed her assessment and told Dredd while she was still under assessment she was going to administer justice as she saw fit. Besides...she had already taken out the perp so it didn't really matter.

A decade before Robocop.
There was Dredd, Judge Dredd.
Based on the comic series from U.K. publisher, 2000s A.D.
This cinematic masterpiece was released in theaters during it's 35th anniversary.
Karl Urban as Dredd was phenomenal, Olivia Thirlby as C. Anderson with her power was real cool (had a spin-off series too) and Lena Headey as Ma-Ma is fiendishly good, so scary with her stare.
It was in the 3D format.
Making the Slo-Mo scenes look crystal clear and colorful, weather you like it or not.
Pete Travis was credited as director.
But dued to creative differences, screenwriter Alex Garland became the main director.
The 1995 version with Sly Stallone was a big-budget summer blockbuster and took some liberties with the material.
This 2012 version is extremely close to the material and perfectly done.
Never removing his helmet, among other things.
Despite the Box Office, this truly deserves more sequels.
So much about Dredd's saga that needs to be seen.

For most of my life, I was convinced Robocop was the best Judge Dredd movie we'd ever get to see. I was thrilled when that was finally proven false!

Which Robocop version did you mean ? The original 1987 one, or the redo of 2014, because the 2014 one does no where near compare to the original Paul Verhoeven one.

As a fan of the comics, I loved this movie. Karl Urban was a perfect casting choice and I'm so glad that he kept his helmet on. Not only is it true to the source material but it adds to the character's mystique. It's a shame there's no sequel.
Karl himself is a comic and manga fan, so he gets the importance of capturing the character perfectly!

Judge Anderson became so popular in the comics she got her own spinoff title.
I think my favorite line in the move was “20 years I've been on the streets. You know what Mega City One is, Dredd? It's a fucking meat grinder. People go in one end, and meat comes out the other. All we do is turn the handle.” Gives the vibe of just how hopeless it is being a Judge yet Dredd keeps soldiering on despite the bleak reality.

Dredd says "Hotshot" in the beginning scene because that's the name of the ammo he is about to use and the perp is confused what is happening. Him saying "hotshot" changes the ammo with the audio command for the lawgiver
For Dredd, that was just a tuesday.

In the comics Dredd removed his helmet only once and his face was covered by a censor bar. Urban had the perfect scowl for the role.
Aw yeah! The OctoKrool boyz are gonna LOVE this movie. An instant classic no matter how much money it made...and definitely already on the list of the greatest movies of the 21st century.
Love the film to death. Karl Urban is complete badass as Dredd. It was faithful that he never took his helmet off unlike the 95 film. Love the action, the villain, score, camera work. I was so pissed that this bombed when it came out. This is one the best best action films I've seen in the past 15 years.
Alex Garland was ON POINT with this one. Brilliant filmmaking all around.

This was actually a 3D movie and almost nobody realizes it, I think that means they did a great job with the affects.
I saw it in 3d in 2012. Top notch production.
I think one of the last places to watch it in it's original 3D form is in virtual reality (oculus quest)
EASILY the best Dredd Karl Urban.
In the comics, Judge Dredd never removes his helmet, ever. So when Stallone spent most of his movie without the helmet, fans worldwide were pissed off. Karl Urban was so dedicated to NOT removing his helmet, that when the director suggested a shot where Dredd is suiting up (and seen helmet-less in silhouette), Urban said "absolutely not".
I think you guys also missed the point with the block's residents going after Dredd and Anderson: they weren't junkies or stupid losers (for doing things like going into the gas grenade smoke), they were desperate. The residents are basically enslaved in Peachtree, much like soldiers in an African warlord's army, they don't fight in alliance with the warlord, they fight out of fear of being killed themselves (by the warlord). Remember, MaMa put out the call, the entire Peachtree Tower was going to be under lockdown until the judges were killed, the residents had no choice but to take action if they ever wanted to see daylight again (or be killed by MaMa's clan for not taking action).
Dredd was done right thnx in large part to Urban. He is the one who also insisted he never remove his helmet. The dude has been class AAA since I first saw him in Xena as Cupid and Caesar. If you haven't seen Priest watch it. he is Black Hat in it..a bad guy. Also good is an oldie Called Tank Girl from the 1990s. The remake of Robocop was really good too and didn't get the attention it deserved.

Underrated is severely the wrong word. People gotta learn to use words to express themselves instead of ruining the language. This one is heavily applauded.
Dredd was released in 3D. That was one of the reasons why it did not do well on release. Many if not most people were tired of 3D movies at the time. With thst being said this movie is awesome in 3D on a big screen. Final note the wierd hacker guy is General Hux in the Star Wars sequels.
Dredd is so much fun. You boys should definitely check out Shoot Em' Up, with Clive Owen. It's got a similar level of violence with an underlying level of comedy, its a blast.

You guys should definitely check out "Equilibrium" from 2002 with Christian Bale. He's sort of like Dredd in it, and it's another dystopian action movie. Highly recommend it.

Well, TBF, playing a bunch of SF/fantasy heroes doesn’t speak “range” to me. Compared to, say, a guy like Redford who’s been in everything from romances to superhero movies to westerns to spy flicks. Or Gary Oldman who’s just a chameleon. Or Hanks, who went from screwball comedies to war movies to a guy dying of AIDS.

I admit to having been a little curious and maybe someone with comic knowledge knows, but just what is it behind Dredd's anger and control that Anderson didn't get a chance to comment on.
Doubt
The idea with the Hotshot round was that when it went off it instantly melted the dude's mind, preventing him from squeezing his trigger and killing the hostage. Took me awhile to figure out, thought he was just showing off at first. This movie was so well-done, and stayed faithful to the comics. It's interesting you mention the helmet. That's one thing fans screamed about with the Stallone movie. Dredd as a comic has been around for decades and in that time he has *never* been seen without his helmet. There is a rumor that there is one, singular drawing of him without a helmet and it is locked in a safe. The comic was/is genius in making Dredd expressive with just a mouth and chin, and Urban did an amazing job doing the same.
The Dredd actor loved the comics and refused to remove his helmet to stay true to character. Dude is awesome!

YES! STALLONE VERSION NEXT!! You have to underhand, it was the movie studios decision for Stallone to take his helmet off. It wasn’t his decision. In 1995 when you hire a guy like Stallone for the lead.. the last thing you do it make him keep the helmet on. If you watch it it makes sense why he loses his helmet anyway. It’s all story related, also they give him blue contacts because Dredd has blue eyes.
I went and saw this in theaters thinking it was a remake but, as I sat through the movie I realized it was actually a prequal to Stallone's Judge Dredd. This movie is the reason everyone knows who he is and scared of him in the first one so i ended up liking Dredd a lot.
Know your first thought was right Dredd is kinda a reboot of re imagining while the Stalone is a classic for me Karl Urban is Dredd plus it helps he is a massive fan of the comics.
"I am the law" is Dredd's catch phrase- If you'd seen this in a theater with a bunch of geeks, the place would have erupted when he said the line. Like when you're at a Marvel movie and someone says "Hulk smash" or "It's clobberin' time".
Dredd is so intense that when he teamed up with Batman in the comics, Batman said "Damn dude, chill"
Literally a perfect action movie.

Just as in the comics, Dredd has a look of permanent scorn. He's often referred to as "Stony Face". This uncompromising character is also responsible for one of the biggest mass murders, namely razing the city of a nucleat war to the ground (Apocapypse War story). Karl Urban hit a damn good tone with his portrail IMHO. It's hard to get it right for everyone but this was a fine one.
Take a look at some of the comics. From what I remember I saw him sort of smile once at the end of a story.

That’s one of my favourite moments of the film. That and “Ma Ma is not The Law. *I am The Law* “
Personally, I and the majority of people who have watched this think this is the greatest adaptation of Judge Dredd thus far. I also love that the studio did something original and made it grounded and not over the top. Karl Urban nailed Dredd’s character mannerisms and his nonchalant, anti-hero, sarcastically dark personality. And he didn’t remove his helmet or let his face be seen! That’s Dredd’s gimmick and what makes him unique from all the characters in the comic book. The 1995 version felt like a goddamn parody of the comic and just disrespected it in every way.
I seriously know why this didn’t get a sequel. I would’ve loved the second film , it could’ve explored Dredd’s backstory and I think it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to adapt this universe’s version of Rico. I think he would be a perfect antagonist in this grounded universe and I think the studio would’ve handled and written his character much better than his 1995 counterpart.
Dredd 2012 is just a perfect action, adventure and thrill ride. It has dark comedy that isn’t over done and perfectly timed. Its how comedy should be used in a comic book film. Ma Ma was an amazing and such a sadistic villain, Lena Headey killed it. I especially loved the character development of Anderson, props to Olivia Thirlby. She goes from being naive and unsure of herself to being an absolute beast and badass like Dredd.

I tried so hard to get everyone I knew to go see this when it was in theaters, because it was just BLEEDING money. I loved this movie, and really wanted sequels. Ideally, had it been successful, sequels with higher budgets, so they could expand the world of Mega City One. I even sprung for a 3D ticket, even though 3D often gives me a headache, and was shocked to find that the 3D in this $45M movie was much more consistent and easier on my eyes than some $245M movies I'd seen. Sadly, for whatever reason, it tanked HARD.
I literally typed almost the same thing as you. I tried to get so many people to see it. It was massively awesome in 3D.
I watched a video about Dredd in which Urban wanted this role and took it seriously because of his love of the character. He insisted that he doesn’t take the helmet off because in the comics Dredd never does so Urban definitely wanted to keep that aspect. A lot of harder core fans of Dredd didn’t like Sylvester’s movie because of the fact he does take off his helmet which takes away from the mystique. They wanted Sylvester’s face shown with him being a big star and all.
The fun mobile iPhone game was based on this one. I also luv that gif made from the end scene.
To see you brothers reactions to this masterpiece give me hope & daydream that a sequel is in the works. So much fun in this one, thanks fellas.

This is the movie that got me to trust Karl Urban in any role. Anything he's in, I'll give it a chance. Helps that he's also Butcher.
This remake is great, wish they would make a second movie
Never taking off his helmet has been Dredd's trademark all throughout the comic book. In the early 90s there was a serialized story in 2000AD about a family in the wasteland who find this burned up guy and nurse him back to health, and he turns out to be Dredd after he was forced to retire. That was the first time (and as far as I know, the only time) we ever saw Dredd with his helmet off.

There is an AMAZING Dredd fan film on ▶ called JUDGE MINTY. It draws from actual comic book lore, as to what happens when a Judge is obligated to retire.
Dredd isn’t really a character. He’s a force of nature. Anderson is the character with an actual arc.
They need to add Karl Urban’s Dredd to MK1 as a guest fighter, with Anderson as a Kameo whose Fatality is her ripping apart the loser, only to find out it’s all happening in the loser’s mind, and the camera pans back showing the loser inside an Iso-Cube. For Dredd, a brief monologue of the loser’s crimes, punctuated by a sentence of death. Then show Dredd watching as the loser is thrown into a Meat Wagon, and a montage of the loser being processed into hot dogs, the Fatality pausing as an NPC is about to take a bite.
This was awesome as fuck to watch in the theater, as it was in 3D. The slo-mo effects were mind blowing!

I think its so crazy that this is the same guy who was Bones on the JJ Abrams Star Trek movies, and Cupid in Xena: Warrior Princess. I love his characters, I think I would enjoy talking to him in person.

As a Dredd fan of several decades, the Stallone film had the 'look' but narratively its an utter abortion. In the comics Dredd is NEVER seen without his helmet. This film with Urban is very in tone with the comics and has the aesthetic nailed aswell. It was made for 3D and can assure you its one of the most satisfying 3D experiences in a theater. The film was critically acclaimed but bombed as they never marketed it correctly to distance itself from the Stallone mess. Rebellion who own the property opted to make a tv show. They had Urban interested but they decided to go the Game of Thrones route as Mega City has sooooo many characrers in the comics to adapt. So the series changed to Mega City One and the characters that inhabit it get episodes instead of it all being about Dredd. We are years in and its went ominously quiet.
Anderson is psychic and is part of Psy Ops Judges in the comics, shes Dredds closest ally. Weve had 2 Dredd films and never yet seen his main villain, Judge Death & the Dark Judges. While in the books they are demons it would be eady to adapt them as mutants. Dredds creator John Wagner is at my local con this weekend here in Scotland so you can be sure what ill be asking

There are some cool Easter eggs in this film connected to the original 2000ad comic series. For example:
- The obese citizens throughout the film are a reference to the comic's subculture of devoted over-eaters called Fatties. Some even form militant gangs and are more formidable than others would expect.
- The Banksy-esque poster of the bald kid is in reference to a comics character named Owen Krysler, the "child judge".
- In the opening car chase, the rear view mirror in the van has a little Judge Death figurine dangling from it. If only we could've gotten a sequel, Judge Death would've been an awesome villain to adapt to the silver screen.

recommend pathfinder (2007) with karl urban , underrated film , viking grows up at native american village after viking ship strands there , years later vikings come back and raid and attack the native american but karl urban grown up viking kid fights back and protect his new famaly againts the vikings

You guys gotta watch Punisher War Zone, if you haven't seen it. It's ridiculously awesome and awesomely ridiculous. The violence is on par with Dredd. And I still think Stevenson was a perfect Punisher. RIP
This was filmed with the "Avatar" 3D cameras and 3D in mind during preproduction. I saw it in theaters this way. Sooooooooo good. This movie reminds me of the crazy 1980's "hard R" action movies.

Karl Urban and Lena Headey were both perfect in these roles. I didn't like this movie when I first saw it, ages ago... but it's grown on me. I've rewatched it several times, and appreciate more of it each time. It's definitely a specific genre movie, but it's a *good* genre movie.

I love how often the actual message of Judge Dredd is lost on Americans. The message is not that Dredd is a hero or the Judges are great, it's that they are fascists. That's not me adding a layer of something to the material, it is the stated agenda of the creator of Judge Dredd. Mega City One has an unemployment rate of 98% with everyone forced eat "recycled" literal garbage and humans. Dredd isn't a hero, he's a warning about what giving that kind power can do. He is the only uncorrupted member of a corrupt system, but he's also totally brainwashed that whatever the Judges have to do is acceptable for "the greater good"
You should've seen this movie in 3D, especially the slowmo scenes, those were AMAZING ! It's unfortunate that this movie was so under-promoted. I would've loved to have seen a sequel, as a movie, or even a tv-show (which they have been trying to create now since this movie came out, but is currently apparently stuck in a kind of development hell, real pity).

Having read the comics through the a lot of the major stories, this movie was a good depiction of Dredd.
However before anyone thinks we need judges we need to remember that Dredd gave a gave a guy iso-cube time (5 years or so) for driving 10 Km/miles (can't remember which one it was) under the speed limit.

Action, one liners, small revenge plots, and gruesome deaths. Karl Urban delivered in this movie. You guys should watch The Punisher with Thomas Jane. It’s an awesome film for it’s time and Thomas Janes take on Frank Castle is iconic.
This movie is so baddass!! Karl was amazing and held to the character not taking off the helmet! Props to him... he also rode that crazy motorcycle. A++

The Judge Dredd we deserved
The Judge Dredd comics started in 1977 and are a satirical commentary on authoritarianism. While a lot of people see Dredd as a hero, he's only a hero in the way John Wick is a hero. This movie did a really good job portraying Dredd and it's a shame that it didn't get its due when it was out. The Stallone movie is more accurate when it comes to the technology, but this movie is more faithful to what Dredd is. The perpetual frown Dredd has is a signature look in the comic. It was a nice touch that Urban kept it through the film, along with his helmet.
This is one of the complaints about the Stallone Dredd... in the comics, Dredd's face is NEVER visible. They did it right in this movie... in the Stallone one they just HAD to show his face...
