I had thyroid cancer 7 years ago, and had my thyroid removed. I was worried about having a huge scar on my neck, so I was extremely diligent about after care. I used a stick sunscreen spf 50, that I kept in my purse, every time I left the house for a full year. I used Bio-Oil twice a day, and massaged my neck each time. Just those two things (and an excellent surgeon), and you can't see a scar at all. It's amazing!

Thyroidectomy almost 20 years ago left me with a long, raised scar for many years. I worked in a healthcare facility and a PA offered to do steroid shots but the scar actually never bothered me. It’s very light now and it did actually flatten out on its own and is barely visible now.

Dr.Dray, I read a Medical Publication on how Lugols iodine will not only help skin break down and rebuild itself, to prevent scarring in a healing wound, but will also breakdown and heal old scars ( the study focused a 50 year old scar they were able to remove with lugols iodine.) If this is the case, why do so many doctors say to avoid iodine?

Dr Dray, this was so informative and timely. My 95 year old mom, who has dementia and lives alone, is three weeks out from having a 1" diameter Squamous Cell Carcinoma removed from her lower leg. Between her blood thinners, thin dry skin not holding stitches very well, and edema not related to surgery, it's been pretty rough to care for this surgery site. I've just felt like each time I talk to a nurse or her Dr about it, I get different care instructions. It's all good if you are someone who can remember instructions and have someone there to help you but with an older patient, it's been really rough going. This video really helped me understand the healing process and what I should stop worrying about now that she's finally showing some improvement.

I had an epidermoid cyst removed from the back of my neck in February. My dermatologist recommended Biocorneum (by Sientra). It worked wonders. My scar is almost entirely flat (scar length was 2-3 inches). The Biocorneum has SPF in it and it worked great. I bought mine at a plastic surgery office (didn't need to make an appointment, just walked in and asked for it). It's not cheap, but the smallest size lasted me a few months of application twice a day. I would highly recommend this stuff.

I got keloids in puberty, dozens of them, all over my body. I tried everything and the the only thing that worked was operation and radition but only if followed with immediate 3 day radition. If you skip a day..keloid goes back. It’s a very painful process so I stopped. However a dr told me he never saw an older person, 40+ with keloid. After 20 years living with keloids (I am 37 now) I can confirm that they indeed start going away! The color goes away, they start lowering to the level of your skin, they itch less.. as if they have a life span and you can see the changes when they are starting to be less active or ‘die’ 😅.so it does go better but it takes a long time! Have patience! 😊

Great content as always. I developed keloids from c-section for both of my kids. After the first, my OBGYN did some planning on the 2nd one but unfortunately it returned. It didn’t bother me and I’ve lived with it for 5 yrs until two months ago when I started the carnivore diet, and coincidentally the keloid started to heal itself after FIVE years!!

Dr Dray, have you done a video on Verteporfin, which blocks the scarring pathway thus allowing skin, complete with hair follicles and sweat glands to grow? The hair transplant community is very excited about Verteporfin and wondering, why are dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons being so slow on the uptake?

If you are having surgery, you are gonna have scars. That is just how it works. I had two ACL surgeries, my right knee they cut the center of my pettla tendon out, which takes 2-3 years to grow back Also not to mention it leaves a 6 inch scar on the knee almost looks like a knee replacement. I want to get the scar covered over so I can forget the trauma. My other knee was done with a pettla graft. The scars are so much smaller, which makes me feel happier. I hate that big scar on my right knee and the surgeon that did it. He put me in possibly permanent pain, and I will honestly blame him for ending my days of being an athlete. I tried to play again, and that's how I tore the other knee because I was over compensating from the pain and took a helmet to the side of the knee. I know I can no longer be active like I once was, and I am only 21. At this point, I just want the scar gone.

I'm currently using a Medical Grade Silicone Scar Cream but unfortunately this wasn't really discussed until my final Surgeon visit in July. I was told that if I didn't use Sunscreen, the Sun could actually tattoo the Scars into my Skin.😳 I had a Right Foot Buinonectomy 8/12/21 and then my Left Foot Bunionectomy 2/03/22. I'm very Fair-Skinned and the Scars are obvious. I've only started the Scar Cream last month and I know that this process can take 6-12 months. They're flattening and the skin is softer, but I'm essentially hoping for them to lighten much more in Color. Thank you for your detailed explanation and tips Dr. Dray! 💜

Big thanks Dr. Dray for the super informative video! I've got these surgery scars, some of them with those keloids. My doc tried steroid injection and laser (Deep FX) to tone down the redness and bumpiness, and it did help, but those scars are still saying hello. Now I'm using red light therapy device for wrinkles (605, 630, 660 and 850 nm wavelengths) every day. But gotta admit, I'm a bit worried it might increase collagen production in the spots that got the injections before. I'd be happy to know your opinion :)

I had total knee replacement surgery 1 week ago, so this video is very timely for me. I have not seen my surgical incision yet as the dressing is not to be removed (or gotten wet) for another week. Unfortunately, I tend to create hypertrophic scars so once my stitches are removed, I will need to be diligent on wound/scar care per the surgeon’s instructions.

Last year my gallbladder was removed because of gallstones. 3 incisions were done, was a laparoscopic surgery, gas was put inside my abdomen so the surgeon could work in the area. The 3 incisions scared with kelloid scar, the one in the belly button I always noticed is getting bigger and is so uncomfortable touching the scar. My first kelloid scar was for an industrial piercing in the ear, I removed but leave 2 kelloid scars. I'm not an African descendant but I'm Latina

Thank you for your videos, very informative. Really beneficial for me at this time, to get science based ways to minimize scars (visibility). I do have a question about one topic in your video.
How does massaging in silicone gel for 5-10 minutes match with removing as much friction as possible from the wound. This seems to increase friction right? Does this mainly apply to hypertrophic (mature) scars >3 months? Is timing key here?
Bit confused as silicon gel and sheets can be started 1-2 weeks into recovery and people tend to mention scar massaging pretty quickly (in my environment at least) when they see me with a big wound/ developing scar.
Any general thoughts on massaging scars?

I wish you had titled this "How to minimize scarring from a scheduled surgery" because very little of this applies to emergency surgery and quite a bit of it talks about things that would need to be done prior to surgery. Unfortunately this didn't have much info for me at all other than the silicone sheets which is already common knowledge.

I removed a raised matured scar by applying 50% tca peel with a q-tip, and applied pressure. It got very red and sent heat into the scar and flattened the scar by causing coagulation.
