- Sir Keir Starmer accused the prime minister of "losing his marbles" as Rishi Sunak said Greece's leader was "grandstanding" in a row over the Elgin Marbles.
Mr Sunak looked uncomfortable as the Labour leader delivered one-liners and put-downs in exchanges over the diplomatic spat with Greece.
The PM cancelled his meeting with Greece's leader at the last minute in a row over the return of the ancient artefacts.
Sources say the Greek leader was left "baffled, surprised and not a little bit annoyed" amid reports Greece backtracked on assurances ministers would not attempt to discuss the fate of the treasures.

Let me explain to my British friends what the optics on the Parthenon marbles are. First of all not all works of art are the same. We're talking about a monument here not a painting that was taken. Monuments belong to themselves and the place they were built, to be there as a whole, standing for what they were built for. They should not be dismantled, moved or in any way defaced. This is what humanity agrees upon today as a whole and it is recorded in the Venice charter of which the UK is also a signatory. It's not something up for debate, just like slavery e.g. is not up for debate and most certainly not up for debate in Britain.
Despite that the British goverment and the British museum acts entirely contrary to that.
Noone can hide behind vague and incoherent assumptions about the past and the circumstances that they ended up in the British museum and there are no excuses to keep any of it. It needs to be returned to its place where the actual.monuments stands. Period.
Trying to come up with excuses about it is the same as someone owning a slave today saying, oh i didn't enslave uncle Tom here, I inherited him from my dad. He didn't enslave him either, he got him from someone else. Hey, don't blame me, I'm against slavery, I know it's wrong, but what can we do now, I have him. And I'm keeping him.

@@K_j_M I know that most British agree. I m referring to the British goverment (possibly supported by a minority on this) and the British museum, whose attitudes are an affront to British and Greek people alike.

It may be trinkets to someone who is not Greek understandably, it most certainly was that for Elgin they way he hacked through the Partenon with sledgehamners, but for a Greek the Parthenon is similar to say the cenotaph. Beyond any artistic and historical value of the monument to anyone, the Parthenon is a war memorial of victory from the Grecopersian wars, its friezes depicting the fallen Athenian soldiers in the battle of Marathon who died protecting their homeland their democracy and their freedom. So it is not a "trinket" .
They are not Greece's, they are not the UK's, they belong to humanity and they should be where they are looked after and preserved best. Which is where they are.
Look at what is happening to the Acropolis now - slapping down concrete everywhere to make it easier to squeeze more tourist dollars out. Shameful.

It is incredible that the British have on display in their museum the stolen Parthenon marbles and make money from them. They should be ashamed of themselves. I wonder if they return to the countries all the stolen artifacts and monuments what would they have to put for display in their museum!
I seem to remember reading that the marbles on display are copies. It's not just the BM. The Louvre and Metropolitan are full of looted treasures. That's why they are fighting tooth and nail to prevent them going back - it would set a precedent.

If Rishi Sunak thinks he's a Griffin then he's even much more lost in la la land than even Sir Keir Starmer is even remotely aware of! Rishi's dispute with the Greek Government is entirely a private antiquitous affair and is one that cannot be neither supported with the UK populace nor that of his crippled support from that of his own party cabinet members from Downing Street which is best described as a Greek tragedy in itself. Which is one that has already very much undermined and abused the confidence of those within the UK electorate!
Suffice to say but this guy Rishi is totally lost at sea along with his lost marbles so maybe someone should finally show him the marble arch overlooking outside Downing Street!

Cancelling the meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, arguably was the proper decision for Rishi Sunak, that has more important issues to deal with and for Keir Starmer, is part of the politics to argue in the interim !
Sunak hit the nail on the head! Labour will agree to free movement with the EU as part of their special arrangment. The Labour party need a complete change of leadership before i trust them again because they keep leaving us in the crap.
These historic monuments were a gift from the Ottoman Empire to Great Britain! These works belong to all humanity and it doesn't have to be in Athens! Earthquakes and volcanoes destroy all historical monuments in Greece, so it is better to leave them in London! London is safe😂😂😂

There are over 100,000 Greek artefact in the BM, Greece is not asking for ALL to be returned, this request is specific. Specific because the Parthenon still stands, there is a superlative Acropolis Museum where the surviving halves not forcibly removed when Greece had no voice, are correctly displayed. Time to show some respect for a peerless collection of sculptures. Time to reunite them in the Acropolis Museum.
