A few minor corrections. Second line, "...what your WILD desire means." Further down, "I MAY NOT have the answers now. So what? TO BE IN TIME IS ON THE BEAT." As for the refrain, it's "offsideS" and "that sent love, SEND love through."

That never occurred to me, but this would work really well as a musical. The only staging challenge would be the mammoth meat monster demon.

@@juno1752 Can also use tricks with a giant puppet that's partial inflatable with multiple layers mimicking flames and shifting flesh.
The monster could be projected on a scrim, they could go the Bette-Midler-Show-King-Kong route, and there's probably a million other ways to do it. My point wasn't that the effect is impossible, it was that there's so much animated razzle-dazzle that I hadn't realized how simplistic the story actually is.

Debbie's voice is so hypnotic, you can help but just feel like your floating in the song.

There was this behind the scenes show on nickelodeon, I forgot the name. Where they interviewed the actors. With Lou Reed and Debbie Harry.
Glad you guys found it. It’s one of this cult classics that needs to be shared. Hope you’ve seen both versions. The Canadian version and US version have some real differences. I got both on dvd.

I had gone around buying CDs, (including Zombie Bird House) to try to get all the songs from Rock n Rule. Should rekindle my lost hope that a full soundtrack will be released?

I believe I read something about this in Cheap Trick's boxed set, "Sex America Cheap Trick". I think it stated that they were unable to locate the master of the Robin Zander/Debbie Harry version that closes the movie. It's SUCH an amazing version, featuring some of Robin Zander's best vocals. We may have to settle for the film version with sound effects and dialogue.

Its quite fitting her name is Angel in the movie, and the song with Blondie's voice makes this love song feel like the beginning morning on a sunny day.

Just found this gem of a movie I’m 22 and loved it
I have a ripped copy of this movie somewhere in my VHS archive. I never really knew how obscure it would turn out to be. And now that I know all the lyrics, it kinda brings a tear or two to my eye.
Can you upload that VHS rip please. There is no VHS rip of the film on the internet currently. I managed to get a friend to rip his laserdisc but the VHS would be awesome to have up.

The instrumentals are, yes, but Maybe For Sure is a re-do of sorts by Debbie Harry because she stated the music "haunted" her.

i tap out till 0:34. then it reminds me of that track from Breakfast Club when the jock and basketcase fall in love...then it's blondie for a good long time...but when the angel talks, i blast off like on dmt...love is anything you make it....and there are about 2 drum buildups in that song that are so in line with gen x's "Kiss me Deadly" build up

Debra Harry was out there before Madonna was on the scene. Rock and Rule is one of the great stand alone obscure feature animations during the late 70s-80s, like Fantastic Planet and Heavy Metal to name a few. When animation was still done the classic way before computer animation tools started really getting in. If there was rotoscope done, the rotoscope model was well masked over by the animated character hand drawn in by the animators. Like an early 2D version mocap method without computers. Animation cels and backgrounds were still being hand painted. What a great era in classic animation! Nelvana's crowning achievement masterpiece for the time imo.
There would be no Madonna without Debbie Harry. No Terri Nunn either

I’ve just recently found about and watched this movie but this song has been on loop both here and in my head.
It's been stuck in my head for over 30 years, and it's a travesty that it's never had a legit release. The revised "Maybe for Sure" version just isn't as magical.

Omar's look was modeled off Robin Zander ans Angel's was obviously modeled after Deborah Harry. Would love a clean version of Send Love Through.
I’m fairly convinced there is a cop out there somewhere something the animators had for animation purposes. They would’ve kept a copy obviously so it’s probably in someone’s basement or attic. Then again I could be wrong.

Honestly, with how my tastes have changed over the years since I’ve first seen this flick, I’d say this is my favorite song from it. It almost sounds like something that could be from an opener for bands I like now, like Sweeping Promises or Automatic, for instance, it’s so Post-Punk.

My childhood even though this is FAR from being a movie for children. This version and the duet with Omar at the end of the movie are my favorite.

The Nelvana fire's a myth (although their basement flooded). Several of the songs have been officially issued -- the movie version of Pain & Suffering was just included on an Iggy Pop re-release. Rights to the artists' music are held by several different companies, making an official release difficult.

It's a shame most of the movie and its music/elements were lost in a fire. Wonder if it was pure coincidence that Rock & Rule had to do with demons and the like.... I stand by the belief that the movie's haunted/cursed.
I feel like "Maybe For Sure" is somehow more fitting to how I think Angel would be more realistically. She's too soft in Rock & Rule when I think she'd HAVE to be a little bit of a hard ass to put up with Omar. I understand the creators wanted Angel to be a feminist role model, but it feels like she kinda just goes "ok lol let's fuck" when Omar gives a half assed apology. She does stand up to the demon and Mok at the end, but throughout the rest of the film her character shows little development and serves little purpose beyond being the damsel in distress, just a little bitchier with one weak attempt at escaping that was easily thwarted. But a lot of Rock & Rule's characters really lacked in their respective roles, sadly.
Actually, I think that Angel had a pretty strong character throughout the movie. She stood up to Mok when he tried to get her to abandon her friends and band before he straight up kidnapped her, and tried several times to escape him afterwards, showing she was intuitive and intelligent. Specifically, getting on Cindy's good side and taking an opportunity when it presented itself (pretending to be 'one of Mok's girls') and used it to get out of the tower.
There was also the time she tried to get Mok to abandon the show, saying they should run away together and that she was in love with him, to try and thwart his plans. It didn't work, but she had the initiative to try anyway in a last ditch effort to stop him. She stood up to the demon as well, refusing to back down despite the fact she probably felt she was definitely gonna get eaten. Even when it was about to grab her, she stood her ground, which showed she was brave and strong.
Omar is definitely a jerk, but I think she did know how to handle him after the show. She didn't run after him when he left the stage, and instead finished *her* song because it was what she wanted to do. She also let Omar come to her instead of blindly seeking him out to apologize, as if she were the one in the wrong.
@@HoneyLemonZest Those are all very valid points and arguments in Angel's defense. To be fair, though, the issue lies therein with how the character herself is treated and presented through the movie. She doesn't really *fit* in with the rest of her band. She doesn't even truly fit in with the rest of the Rock & Rule world. (Same goes for Dizzy & Stretch, but they're less important to the overarching storyline as Angel is.)
She stands up for herself and does what she thinks is right, but she also is no better than Mok in many ways when it comes to her character unraveling. She wants everything too, as she says. What does she want? Fame, glory, admiration. That's what Angel and Omar struggle over accepting, that they're both attention whores, and so is Mok, but he takes it to another level.
She's manipulative as well. She is untruthful and distrustful of Cindy, which, while on one hand, I don't blame her... I also kind of just go :/ since it's so clear that Cindy is totally oblivious and would probably be chill with Angel regardless if she told the truth of her situation. Instead, Angel lied to get her way. She did the same thing to Mok.
Regardless of what Mok's evil intents are, there's one thing he *never* did - which was lie. He told Angel what he needed and wanted, and he didn't hide what he was doing. He was clear from day one what he was about, which to me, is far more respectable and mature than how Angel dealt with her captivity.
Of course, I'm *very* biased, so don't take it from me. This is all just personal opinion and my perception of a movie, that frankly, was far too cryptic and obscure when it came to properly depicting well rounded characters.
Additionally, Angel is judgmental asf. She literally does nothing throughout the entire Club 666 scene except judge and glare at innocent clubbers. Let's not mention how she nearly entirely ignores Dizzy and Stretch's existence, as well as the fact that she's used as a MacGyver.
She's got a nice voice and character design. That's all that matters to most people, but in reality, she's shitty as a person and a shitty character. It sucks, because Deborah Harry is such a great and powerful female icon in the world of rock. I just think the creators should have put a lot more focus and clarity into her quirks, personality, ambitions, and actual way of being as a person instead of as the simple idea of a sexy blonde female rockstar who has a magical voice and stands up for her friends.
She was just treated in very juvenile way for a very adult, mature concept. Her premise, much like everything else in the movie, is definitely strong and has potential. It just needs... Something with a little more of a modern flair on what being a 'feminist role model' means. Which means emphasizing her as a *person*, not as a woman or as the magical voice, because once we know she's the voice, anything else doesn't really matter beyond her purpose as a plot element, because you know for a fact that no matter what she does, she's still going to be drugged, tied up to a circuit board and sexualized in skimpy satanic sideboob robes.
I got the impression Angel wanted to be a rock star (thought it seems she didn't lust for it as intently as Omar) but she loved Omar more than that dream. Since this song is diegetic, it's pretty clear Angel wrote it for Omar and it says a lot about her and her motivation. Not saying she is a pushover, but her relationship isn't exactly beneficial to both parties.
Problem is, the movie does have some semi-serious story issues (which the visuals and style make up for) when it comes to the protagonists. The first act zoomed by way to quickly and they didn't establish the central love story enough. Angel seemed like a fairly down to earth kind of person and Omar was such a jerk. They should have added just one scene to show the audience why Angel loved him so much and maybe explain why he is such a jerk.
IMO, there's no way to get around the damsel in distress plot because that's the whole crux of the movie. IMO, the movie would have just been better with 10 more minutes of scenes fleshing out the characters and a complete 3rd act rewrite.

I want to make Rock & Rule into my own TV show - my own VERY adult, and animated, western series to get the message across to people. I know what it's REALLY about.... Transcending all of the horrible bullshit of life, and still being a rockstar, above it all. Especially when you contend with demons. I've been working on it for over 3 years.
Mok is a character that I want to be picked at, picked apart, and put back together again, because I really think he was always the main character. It's about understanding - where, what, when, why, and most importantly of all, H O W .
