  • The exhaust on my Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 project car is TOTALLY done for, rusted through in several places and really only fit for scrap - but unfortunately, I can't source a new one, so I'm going to have to try and stick it back together anyway!
    The FAQs:
    "So this is a Mira, right?"
    - Yes, sort of. It is basically identical to the L500 (specifically, the L512S) Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R4.
    "Don't Mighty Car Mods have one of these?"
    - Again, sort of. They're a very close relative of the Daihatsu MCM's Marty is a big fan of. The car in their Kei To The City film (and Marty's later conversion project) share much of this car's DNA.
    "Didn't Regular Car Reviews drive one of these?"
    - Yes! On the RCR UK trip, they drove an almost identical UK-spec Cuore Avanzato. I actually met the owner at the RCR UK meetup. It's actually my Suzuki Cappuccino that they mention in the video about the meet.
    "What does Cuore Avanzato even mean, anyway?"
    - It's Italian, actually. "Cuore" means "Heart", and "Avanzato" means "Advanced".
    "I drove one of these in Gran Turismo, and it said it was front wheel drive, not all wheel drive?"
    - They did 2WD/FWD versions of the turbo Miras in Japan, too, the "4" in the name is what denotes the AWD/4WD/4x4 version.
    "Is it a kei car?"
    - Yes, it meets the kei car regulations, though whether it "counts", being a UK car, is an interesting question.
    "Is it JDM?"
    - No, it's a UK model, there are some subtle differences/modifications for the UK market, though nothing earth shattering.
    "Did they really only make 80 of them?"
    - Of the UK road car version, yes, give or take a couple, plus there were about 20 rally-prepared ones. The Japanese equivalent is far more common.
    "Is it a 3 cylinder engine?"
    - No, it's a 4 cylinder, the Daihatsu JB-JL 16v engine, though it meets the same 660cc capacity limit for kei cars that the three cylinders used elsewhere do.
    "Is it turbocharged?"
    - Yes, with a small top-mount intercooler.
    "How does the AWD work?"
    - There is a selectable drive to the rear coming off the gearbox, with a viscous coupling between the rear differential and the propshaft to allow for the difference in wheel speeds when cornering.
    "How much does it weigh?"
    - 768kg, per the UK original specification sheet.
    "Where can I get one?"
    - To be perfectly honest, it's a lot easier to find a JDM one as an import than a UK car, but if you keep an eye on Ebay and forums, one might come up.
    "Is it for sale?"
    - I'm afraid not, no.

    Amazing you fixed that exhaust. Great patch around the hanger. You made that look easy, and I know it is not.

    Top bodging.
    That’s a tidy looking Series 3 Landy too. 👍

    The repair to the silencer looks stronger than the original 😎. Having fitted new metal to the weak points, it will be interesting to see how long this lasts. I noticed that the exhaust on my 106 rusts where the middle pipe joins the silencer, so the last few years I have sanded that joint and painted it. The first time I used high temperature paint, but then I tried the budget metal paint from Aldi or Lidl and found that lasted just as well, probably because the silencer is so far from the engine 😁.

    Awesome video once again, currently undergoing some similar repairs on my 04 Forester XT that I am planning to get on the road soon. Always nice to be able to watch videos of people doing something before you have a go yourself, so I appreciate the effort you put in!
    Also just wanted to suggest that you maybe put up some sort of barrier to shield passersby from the arc of your welder, unless there was something there and the camera angle didn't show it, looked like it was in open view of the road/sidewalk.

      I would love to hear that 660cc scream at the top dead center of its tiny little cylinders.

    are you using shielded gas there or flux cored for the mig? :)

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's gas shielded, which isn't always totally effective when you're outdoors, but I find if you turn the flow up and do your best to shield it from any breeze, it's generally ok.

    Could you not get a new pipe?

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Unfortunately not, they're a different engine to the more common L500 models here, and while I think the system would still mate up to the downpipe, the live rear axle means it'd be the wrong shape back there. It's not a disaster - if I need to, I can either modify one or go with a custom one - but for now, I'll stick with this.

    i got a full stainless system if you want to buy?

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ScottiesVlog Hmm, is it a replica of the standard system, or a larger bore one? And definitely for the L512S with AWD?

    • @ScottiesVlog
      @ScottiesVlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its a full custom made system made to OEM spec. its for l510 or l512 4wd miras. came off of my mira classic. currently got it listed on ebay.

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right. I think I'm probably ok for now, though, thanks.

  • @ScottiesVlog
    @ScottiesVlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    if one of my mira classics has a good exhaust you can have it off me for a decent price mate? will go to good use. i will be using a custom system anyways.

      on9carparts.com/goods.php?id=886 should be this one. only £6 so worth a try.
      I use these guys alot for spaces. if you want L5 stuff go onto the kancil stuff. its all L2 mira parts but as we all know L2 and L5 miras share 99 percent of mechanical parts

      @ScottiesVlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      also found you can get the k&n ones for about £30 which is what my mira has in it
