      Some elements that make a gym helpful for this are competition (measurement of progress as informed by outside comparison ... it's a moving goal but it's also the most relevant for many people's motives) and expectations ... (others around you who expect to see improvement, and you'll want to avoid the feeling of disappointing.)

    • @binaryglitch64
      @binaryglitch64 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also camaraderie...if you like hanging out with the people at gym, than you'll wanna go just to be with them, even if your 'just gonna take it easy today'... just showing up is 90% of the battle ... having friends at the gym helps with that.
      Ever notice that whenever you feel like 'your just gonna take it easy today' and it's just because of laziness and you still show up, you always end up not taking it easy, but when it's due to injury, you almost always actually take it easy ... it's cuz of how you felt before you showed up, but once your there, your committed and not wanting to is no longer a factor so the desire to be lazy fades away.

    I remember watching a gym fails compilation of ego lifters and people jiggling machines while they read their morning newspaper, and one of the clips of was of a dude just rolling and spinning and pivoting around on the ground like some kind of deranged loon. Some people were making fun of him in the comments, but other people were pointing out that he was shadow wrestling, and he had a VERY clean and crisp single leg takedown from the looks of things.

    Another awesome piece of equipment which will cost you very little money are gymnastic rings. You can get a full body workout with these and they allow you to do a lot of stuff which you cannot do completely without equipment, especially when it comes to upper body development. Something I recently started doing due to the gyms being closed in my area is packing a small backpack with a double end bag and some gymnastic rings, going for a run late in the evening to a calisthenics park (a lot of cities have these, they are completely free and usually not closed even during lockdown, but a tree with a sturdy branch or the bar which holds the swings on your local playground works just as well), setting up my minimal equipment and getting in a great workout. Like coach Ramsey said, you don't need a lot to make it work.

  • @blockaderunner
    @blockaderunner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with this content. I've been "sticking" to at routine (adding on/taking off/supplanting but keeping the core of it constant) since August 2019. My First piece of equipment was a Bosu ball (due to free MMA (real serious gym with amateur/pro fighters released into the circuit) classes I'd taken in Aug 2019). This year and a half work on the Bosu ball has my triceps at their peak-strong for pushing. I also have walked in a circle on my hands for a year and a half on it - I've grown to like the exercise, used to be my most dreaded, but my reps have never been higher to date on it.
    What I Should have bought 1st would be a quality jump rope or 2 (different weights). I've been jumproping at the beginning of my workouts Every week for over a year but not 1.5 years cause I didn't incorporate jumproping at the beginning Aug 2019. It's vital to "striking" as you say Ramsey Dewey. My walk is confident, my movement deliberate and crisp due to jumproping for over a year. It's my warmup. I usually go 40 minutes or more (with music) jumproping to begin my routine. Shadowboxing (free, as you say, with high intensity/low intensity intervals), this is the largest chunk of my workout taking up about 33 mins, BUT during this about 3 times, during a rest period, I'll run up stairs and get on my pullup bar I just purchased last month (I used to have to run 3 miles out the door to the park to get to a pullup bar, now I have one in the home, so More pullups for yours truly).
    I always end my workout with burpees and abdominal exercises gleaned from youtube channels. It is during this time that I am starting fixing dinner/lunch cause by the time I've showered/finished the abdominal workout, dinner or lunch is ready to eat.
    I also have these resistance bands that came with the pullup bar I ordered, that I haven't used yet. Will probably incorporate them over the next few weeks to add to my routine (making it longer). My 3-times-a-week routine usually takes up 2-3 hours of my time per session. Some days I feel like I could go 4 hours, but most days I'm fried or done at 2-to-3.
    So my minimalist equipment (in order) would be: 1)Jump Rope 2)Bosu Ball 3)Pullup Bar
    This will run you about $160 for all 3 items.

    I'm late, but gymnastics rings and a pullup bar for me, as GSP had said gymnastics has a lot of carryovers to other types of sports, like street workouts, and of course martial arts. But yeah, the double-end bag is the most important one. Unlike a stationary heavy bag, it moves in random and most of the time breaks your rhythm. On weights, you can modify it, just put random heavy stuffs (water jugs, rice, books, even sand) on a sandbag or a backpack and you are good to go.

      I am no expert but If you just do the maths, 10000 hours is a lot. If you train 4 times a week, two hours at a time year around with 4 weeks of rest/holidays/vacation/illness thats 384 hours a year. If you start today and stick to your craft you will reach the 10000 hour mark in the year 2046. The hypothesis is that you need that much time for mastery of a skill.

    • @kuhkubo99
      @kuhkubo99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you’re training atleast 3- 5 times a week 1-2 hour practices depending on what level you are or how fast you pick things up you can be ready to go into an amateur fight at around 4 months. This is a very broad generalized number and will be different for everyone. your coach would know your skill levels and I advise you ask them when they think you’ll be ready

    Ramsey, have you never seen those heavy bag stands before? Those are great! The ones that hold extra heavy bags are usually 2 to 2.5 meters tall and have very strong frames. However, there are two things you need to do to make sure the stand doesn't rock back and forth or fall over. That is, place 20kg sandbags on the outstretched, supporting legs of the frame, and make sure your heavy bag is your weight or heavier, but no more than 50% heavier than you. It is usually recommended that your heavy bag is half your weight, and I would say this is generally true when you have a good ceiling to hang it from. I weigh 70kg, but fighters at my MMA gym tell me I hit like middle weight, and the heavy bags act like it. For this reason, I have to do what I previously mentioned to facilitate a heavy bag at home, and I recommend this to anyone who lives in an apartment with a ceiling at least 3 meters high.

    Just chipping in from a personal physiotherapy perspective: you can jog on the spot or run back and forth inside (if you don't want to trip on a skipping rope and smash your face into the living room tv - not the best way to get on tv), but also pull up bars are good (maybe have one at the top and bottom of a doorway - can use bars like a free weight), gym balls, drinks bottles (filled with water or sand), mop handles, heavy boxes, 49 postures I Chin Ching is good imo, & shadow boxing is not for zombies!!!

    Resistance bands are also a decent tool to use. They're light weight, easy to use, easy to transport like the double end bag, different brands have different adjustment options, good for muscle endurance and/or hypertrophy.

    Shadow boxing and shadow wrestling have been big components of my training, even bigger now because it’s more difficult to spar with others at the moment due to the continued COVID shutdowns where I live. It’s also been advantageous that I had already invested in some heavy weights before this pandemic began. Also, my heavy bag has to be out in my back yard and be covered with a tarp. We do our best in these trying times, especially when you’re as obsessive about training as I am.

    It is not as good as a regular bag but it can be excellent if you just have fantasy. For example I can't really practice power on it because it falls then, but because it swing around alot it is Great for positioning and timing (in my opinion).
    What one should be aware of though is that it is easy to start making patterns so be careful with that (but then again that can happen with a regular bag too).

    BTW2: As far as questions goes, I still interested in your opinion about Marvin Cook boxing videos (youtube user "TrueBoxerStance"), especially as he recently start posting new ones.

      Gain a good muscular and cardiovascular endurance by sprinting and bodyweight movements(to failure)when you get that rest is yours to improve with good powerlifting program you can gain tons of muscle and lower the body fat to %8-11 range you can train with olympic movements to like snatch clean...ı dont know your enviorment but ıf you have an even mediocre mma gym go for it sparring partners and materials in those gyms are more beneficial than most of the boxing saloons

    • @sheadoherty7434

      Just go. Being stronger helps, being fitter helps, but without boxing training you won't be prepared for boxing workouts. Running all day doesn't meet the demands for pads, bags, sparring and circuit training.
      So just go as you are, but if you MUST prepare then increase your strength somewhat. Weights are great BUT its unlikely they will ask you to perform barbell squats, instead they'll have you performing push ups and burpees, so if you want to prepare for that: hit the floor and get better at push ups

    Hello coach Ramsey, love your videos especially the long ranty ones. It's refreshing to listen to someone calm and wise after a fast, busy day. Because of the pandemic I do not plan on joining a gym, however I would love to learn a martial art from home. Do you think it's possible to learn from books and videos and what are your suggestions for those if yes. I would love to learn the original TaiJiQuan but willing to try anything taught by someone you approve of!

    FightTIPS also has a pretty good video on making double-end bags, and he even makes one that's a bit easier on the hands than the Punch Professor's looks like it'd be for people who don't have gloves. I think he makes it out of a volleyball? It's been awhile.
    Anyway. The most important thing about the double-end bag, from a fitness perspective, is that they're FUN. You can invite someone who hasn't moved faster than a walk in the 15 years since graduating high school over to your house, and if they see your double-end bag, they're probably going to want to try hitting it.
    Forget tetherballs, they should hang double-end bags on playgrounds.
    I remember you telling a story about having to jump rope for a half an hour before your boxing coach would train you in boxing, but I can't imagine you, or any other single boxer in the world, who thinks "urgh, now I have to hit the double-end bag for a half hour".

    I believe a swinging heavy bag is going to be superior to any free-standing bag. However, if you HAD to choose a free-standing bag, the bob xl is the best one to get because it offers some advantages that you don't get even with a heavy bag. That is a realistic target, not only that but you can pop it off and do ground and pound easily and punch at proper angles that land flush towards a realistic part. You can also practice clinch work more properly with a bob XL than you can with a heavy bag because you can grab the head.
    Again a heavy bag especially one that swings is still superior in every way due to movement. However, if you HAD to have a free standing bag. A BOB XL is better, strap a belly protector to the bottom of it and you can do low kicks. Make it wear a Gi and you can practice grabbing it and moving it, add foam arms and you can practice slipping underneath the arms and doing overhead rights, or even question mark kicks. Do dirty boxing techniques such as single collar ties and punches.

    I'm going with a jump rope. You can do endurance. Foot work. If you go really intense you get a massive burn in the arms which you feel when you go hard on a bag. And it's damn cheap

    Very interesting about putting the double end striking bag being converted into a kangaroo bag, this is the first time I have heard of it being mounted either horizontally or diagonally. Also if I had one question to ask, it would be what training advice would you have for training while dealing with neuropathy in the feet. I have trained in various systems of martial arts (rather fanatically) since the late 70s, but due to prior time in the military and later doing security work as a career since the late 90s onward, I have developed a bit of arch deterioration and thus subsequent neuropathy in my feet and lower legs. This hasn't deterred my continued training in martial arts but it has caused me to gradually change the way I move or how I execute certain techniques. So any advice you have would be appreciated. As always, love the channel and find each video both entertaining as well as educational. And on a side note, with your voice how did you miss your side calling as the narrating voice over for movie trailers?

    Hey coach.Good answer my friend.Q-for the coach.You hear more nowadays of “High percentage” techniques,I presume meaning the likelihood of landing/scoring even ko or submission.Do you personally believe in the “high percentage technique”and if so now that we see much more unorthodox techniques in MMA that if trained enough any techniques could be have a high chance of success?kind regards j

    • @autre1806
      @autre1806 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just know that 'high percentage techs' are already watched carefully since a lot of time in judo. It also guides to some poor 'rules adjustment' to 'balance the game' (like no grip on trousers, and then no more grip to leg anymore).
      I personnaly think that if they are rules, they are technics who fit the rules better, but this not makes the technics more efficient in general 🤔

      Internet Friend hey bud curious about something,as a judoka if you had to choose a throw in a self protection situation where you don’t want dragged down into a ground fight what would you choose,for a intermediate level player/judoka?

    • @autre1806
      @autre1806 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesmccrindle8633 well, it might depend the situation, but I'll surely test some sweeps (as de ashi barai) to make him react first (sometimes it's enough). Then I think I'll try a hips throw against a smaller or equivalent fighter (as hane goshi, wich can be very explosive). Against a taller opponent, I'll better go for a shoulder throw (like morote or a kusure of morote witha leg dam). If I would be taller myself, I would try some ko Soto or o soto spam, as rear fall are damn efficient and violent (I'm only 1m72).
      I hope it's understandable, I used some Google translate for some words.

    QUESTION: Dear coach, I’ve been thinking a lot about giving a name to the fighting techniques that are specific for a particular combat sport, but would literally get you killed outside of that particular sport. I.E. flipping belly down to prevent getting pined, or clinching to tie up your opponent (to get a rest)and waiting for the ref to break you up. Of course the term “sport specific” already exists, but I think there should be a separate term for those techniques or strategies that are DANGEROUS outside that specific style. What would you suggest that term be?

    Hey Ramsey, greetings from South Africa. I'm a big fan of your channel, and find your knowledge invaluable. I've recently added the good ol' haymaker into my training regimen. My idea is that if you train/refine that gross motor movement enough, it will be a better weapon than none in a self-defence situation where adrenaline has reduced your fine motor abilities. Could you give your opinion? I'd love to hear what you have to say.
