You’ve talked about the value of you know something about post production effects work, and the value that has provided you in working both with VFX artists throughout the process but especially in the editing room when you can sometimes comp together placeholder effects on the fly. Given you didn’t go to film school, I’m wondering how you learned this. I’d be curious to watch a video similar to the one on sound about your learning journey. 2. Simulait but more meta, how did you learn to animate and what is the process that goes into making a short video like this? I’m a school teacher who’s interested in exploring the form of video essays in more detail, and given this is somewhat like a video essay I’d be interested to know how it was made in terms of both the writing process and the animation. Thanks for sharing these perspectives!

David is purely one of my favorite filmmakers in all aspects. His films are movies that I tend to like and his focus on showcasing the behind the scenes is amazing.
Not gonna lie: I'd watch David Sandberg's "Eating an Apple While Depressed - The Six Hour Cut". I'd even buy the Blu-Ray "Director's Cut" with every deleted scene. Side note: I noticed that I made a previous comment on this video 3 years prior, which I had forgotten. I was surprised that it contained no references to "Eating an Apple While Depressed - The Six Hour Cut". Who was I even back then...? :)
The animation is so expressive and genuinely funny, usually on these kinds of videos the humor in the animation feels off but this one fits like a glove. Maybe it's because you made both, I don't know, it was pretty nice!
Imagine them doing that to books. An audience weighing in on the plot etc, and I don’t mean the professional editors who gives constructive advice. Where’s the respect. Maybe there’s a lot more money on the line when it’s a Hollywood movie, which makes executives scared and shortsighted.
Books actually have _do_ have this, they're called alpha and beta readers. They read works before they're published, sometimes before they're edited, and give feedback. Sometimes they're professional authors, but usually they're just friends, family, or fans.
I do test screenings about once a month here in LA and they're amazing to see. Some of the films have been excellent (like seeing The Menu ~7 months before it released) and others have been terrible (still under NDA for them). The worst part is not being able to discuss it with anyone haha.
I went to a test screening of "Stan & Ollie" and stayed behind for the Q&A and some dummy was moaning because there wasn't enough slapstick comedy in it. Everyone just laughed at him

A good example of this is probably the film Deep Blue Sea. The original ending was that the guy and the scientist girl survived cos the black guy sacriface himself against the shark. The Test Screening result with the audience was shouting for the scientist girl to died instead cos it was her fault the whole film happened in the first place (shark gain super intelligent to eat the cast)! Final result is the scientist girl sacriface herself at the shark and the guy and black guy lived instead!
ironically, The Rise Skywalker test screening reviews were leaked a few weeks after they were posted, and apparently had alternate, more controversial endings and plot points vs the final cut. Excellent video as always

Remember everyone the Orginal Star Wars had a horbile test screening. Everyone in the screening hated the film. Everyone saw the problems and actively worked to help solve them. Stanley Kubrick hated the Orginal crawl and helped Lucas rewrite it from the ground up. Lucas fired the Orginal editor and hired a new team to completely re edit the film to improve the pacing, the plot, and the characters. And that's how we got a pop culture film.
I just didn't like the film because it completely shat on both Terminator and Terminator 2, while at the same time calling itself the "official" Terminator 3. In the first three minutes alone, everything that Kyle Reese, the T-800 (T2) and Miles Dyson sacrificed was all for NOTHING!

Thank you for this video. It was truly great:)
hey Krepshus! it’s nice to see you here!
@@blake.mp4 Ok, but grammar though?
David Sanberg is fucking hilarious, seriously one of the best and most down to earth directors.
I really appreciate that this man is still making videos to help other filmmakers out. What an amazing person.
Dude, this was awesome! Still can’t believe the kind of quality content you continue to put out on this channel.
Can we get a Criterion edition of “EATING AN APPLE WHILE DEPRESSED”, please??
I mean... I didn't know i need it but i do now!
I want a full 3 bluray disc director's cut amazingly depressed edition!
JK aside, this video is amazing!! Thank you for being on TH-cam, sir!
David is purely one of my favorite filmmakers in all aspects. His films are movies that I tend to like and his focus on showcasing the behind the scenes is amazing.
Videos like this are why you’re becoming one of my favorite directors
When you didn't think the quality of David could get any better! This is amazing!
I saw a test screening of Anchorman 2 and I’m very glad I did because it was way funnier than what was actually released.
They probably should for some books.
Books actually have _do_ have this, they're called alpha and beta readers. They read works before they're published, sometimes before they're edited, and give feedback. Sometimes they're professional authors, but usually they're just friends, family, or fans.
After only three videos, already this guy is by far my favorite youtuber.
I laughed way too hard at the part where the guy throws the movie at that Caucasian girl
I find your stuff the most informative film making tips/insights since Robert Rodriguez’s 10 min film school.
It works surprisingly similar to focus groups in politics.
Ponysmasher is hero we didn't ask for but the hero we need. Debunking all the filmmaking mysteries.
“Just an example of a big franchise, don’t read anything into it. I, for one, welcome our Disney overlords.”
Everyone just laughed at him
This channel is pure gold
I love your movies, and I really love the fact that you still take the time to make TH-cam videos for us!
I go to a lot of test screenings and your video is perfect! Thanks for being so open. Your channel is amazing and very educational. I hope Hollywood appreciates your openness as I do. "More turtles!"
“Sooo wha didjoo thiiiiink?” “Uhh, 👍🏻” “YaaaAAAAAaaaay”
Your video was well done ... but wait! I paused this video MULTIPLE times to read the comments and the signs and the filled-out forms from the characters ... and LAUGHED and LAUGHED! Well done! Really well done!
It's hard to ever imagine a bad script becoming good after test screenings.
It's not supposed to fix it on that level.
It's more about the pace, ending, etc
I am happy to see the kind of videos you make. This is very important for new filmmakers like me. I just got a new way to see things in the film making world. Thank you
❤❤❤ I celebrate every time I see new content from DFS!
Dude, this was narrated and cut/edited/animated/thrown off the cuff so beautifully. Wins the internet for at least the next 17 seconds.
Thank you so much for still doing it sir♥️😌
A good example of this is probably the film Deep Blue Sea. The original ending was that the guy and the scientist girl survived cos the black guy sacriface himself against the shark. The Test Screening result with the audience was shouting for the scientist girl to died instead cos it was her fault the whole film happened in the first place (shark gain super intelligent to eat the cast)! Final result is the scientist girl sacriface herself at the shark and the guy and black guy lived instead!
Eating An Apple While Depressed is an UNDERRATED CLASSIC!!
I love the amount of insight you give to us about Hollywood, lots of thing are kept a secret or just uknown to common people, and great animatiom too
“Capekino”
I didn’t know Sandberg was a /tv/ browser
First thing i noticed. Based?
he was checking out how awful it is
apparently quite a few hollywood weirdos browse it
It's the one place on the internet to discuss film anonymously without anyone trying to circle jerk for upvote points
ironically, The Rise Skywalker test screening reviews were leaked a few weeks after they were posted, and apparently had alternate, more controversial endings and plot points vs the final cut. Excellent video as always
You are just the greatest. I love your sense of humor, while explaining things that we don’t get much insight on. Thank you for continuing this channel. 🙌
“But did you enjoy the movie?” “Well Reddit hasn’t seen it yet soo uhh...”
Hahaha nice one David, I see this happening alot
Everything you upload on this channel is gold. Thank you!
I genuinely would like to watch a movie about the Great Fire of Rome from the perspective of a drunk mouse
I love how this videos are both entertaining and informative (and from someone who had actually worked on movies), keep on doing them, they are answering many questions I always had about the real process behind movies, they are amazing!
I go to test screenings. They’re fun and give me a chance to see movies that I would otherwise never see. Not sure if my opinions help though.
Also Interstellar’s music gets used a lot as a temp soundtrack.
Man genuinely thank you so much, I've been working on a project for over 8 months and at this point I have no clue what's good and what's bad. Wasnt sure if I should just release it without getting an alternative perspective but now I can better understand why its important and why I shouldnt worry too much about how it's perceived. Cheers man!
Amazing content, amazing animation and incredibly entertaining. Thank you so much for all of the effort you put into this channel, you are awesome! :)
Seriously the most consistently-interesting video I’ve seen in forever
The internal test screenings part reminded me of the story before BvS came out that it got standing ovations from the crowds during test screenings and that it was a masterpiece. Turns out those crowds were just WB execs and employees.
You have my respect for taking all that time to animate this! Awesome and hilarious work!
*"sO WHAT DID YOU THINK??"*
gives a thumbs up
*"YAAAYYYYY"*
Wanting to be a film director in the future, you are the ultimate guide on how to do so. Thanks for all the hard work you put in.
1:49 truer words were never spoken.
I am impressed by the amount of work you put into these videos!
It is amazing and very rare to see directors and professionals share their knowledge freely in such a high quality.
You are a saint!
Thank you very much :)
It’s great to see you animating again - even if you found it laborious! Any chance you’d helm a full-length animated feature?
The most valuable filmmaking TH-cam channel strikes again. What a generous work of charity for film people!
Shazam 2 is currently under test screening after the flash.
Holy sit, this is wonderful. Everything comes together wonderfully. The animation, the sound, the narration. This is damn fine work.
Damn, I always hate it when the hamburgler steals my hamburgers xD
Your videos continue to be fantastic. I'm always trying to push professors to see them so we can talk about them in class 😅
I'm glad he has so much time on his hands to craft such a detailed animated video about test screenings.
You should have done a test screening for this....I didn't like where the BFF was killed by the "bad guy"!
I like the service you are providing with this channel. So many big studio professionals don’t produce work on this platform and it’s really valuable and interesting to get insight. And educational
“My pants are full of surprises” HAHAHAHA!! What version of Shazam was that?! I definitely want to see that one.
It's Shazam 3 actually. Saw it in a test screening yesterday, definitely not enough turtles if you ask me!
"Well Reddit hasn't seen it yet."
I repeat Reddit is down! Reddit is down!
But jokes asides this gives me more faith in Terminator Dark Fate.
Yeah people are hating that because "WAMANS IN MAH TERMINATAH"
I'm pretty sure they're hating it cause everything after T2 has sucked ass. And this story looks like more of genesys-style writing
@@VadersFist95 The original Terminator films follow a female protagonist; stop making up problems that no one has
@@lukess.s Yeah, a GOOD protagonist.
That was a great animation, Ponysmasher. I loved it. Very detailed in every facet of your explanation. The animations helped greatly.
