I had the great good fortune of hearing Ms.Norman sing this live at the Fairfield Halls Croydon on 8th April 1974, (alongside Margaret Price) in a full performance of Mahler's Resurrection symphony with the LSO under James Levine. She was younger then, and perhaps at the peak of her powers. I was in the front row, and I've never forgotten it. One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.
We were fortunate, that you came into our lives and showered us with this amazing voice. Every time you sang it was a painting that was pure beauty. Truly an American treasure to the world.
This was on 23 or 24 June 1983 during the Festival of Saint-Denis (close to Paris); Jessye Norman, Sheila Armstrong, Choir of Radio France and Orchestre National de France were conducted by Seiji Ozawa. One of the best performance I've ever heard of Mahler 2 and that I taped in the early 90s during a radio broadcast. Ten years later I wrote to France Musique (French public radio for classical music) to ask them to broadcast it again and they did! That gave me the opportunity to record it on CD.
Silfredo Serrano I was literally thinking the same thing! There’s a clip of her singing Senta’s Ballad and the voice was as majestic and haunting as yes: a pipe organ!
Next time an opera fiend insists that Norman is a soprano, send him here, The most beautiful comfortable tones of her instrument are that of a mezzo, and I love every phrase.
Miss Norman has always had a very wide range. She is not only a soprano but also a mezzo. A good example of her upper range is the Richard Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder.

Mahlers Genie und die Stimme von Jessye Norman. Göttlich.
Oh mein Gott... welche Farben... welches Licht... welche Liebe... Ein Stern ist zu früh zu dem lieben Gott empor gestiegen... R.I.P.
We miss you, Jessye.
One of the most beautiful versions ever.. she was just able to sing anything. RIP
Norman was really unique, as a singer and interpretive artist. This was celebrated in perfect beauty and is very touching. The conducting also.
mein Gott wie berückend schön….das ist überirdisch schön...
Wonderful performance by the limitless Jessye Norman. And a great job by the legendary Seiji Osawa in this version of Urlicht.
some of the most perfect singing/technique that is here for the taking/learning from. Thanks for posting.
Wow. Pure velvet. Gives me goose bumps with every listen.
Absolutely wonderful! What a treat! What a joy! Bravissima!
Celestial..DAMA D LAS ESTRELLAS..DOLCE Y MADRE DE OBRAS EN SU VOZ..ÚNICA..Graxieee...
Her voice was like a pipe organ! She could sing soprano and on down to contralto depths...

@@omarsankofa5362 At times she reminds me of Flagstad as well. Flagstad was often compared to pip organ
Prima Donna Assoluta for this type of music
AMAZING!
Nur Engel singen noch schöner ... 💕
Just love Jessye!
Perfection❤

Yes, actually that is an excellent example. I have heard that and it would be the very first that would come to my mind.
Sublime Jessye.
Magnifica!
Sublime.
Bože lepote✨
Where is the 'O roschen Rot' part? That's the most important part that sets the tone of the whole song.
I agree, and hope that someone can post the entire piece. Norman is in total command of her interpretation and delivery in this marvelous performance.
If this was the Boston Symphony under Ozawa, I would love to hear the entire symphony.
❤️
RIP.
Unvergleichlich. Sie hat das Stück erfunden. Wie ein Medium von Gustav Mahler.
🙏🌹
Does anyone know when/where this was recorded/performed?

I recommend this instead.
This is not Mahler, what a bad performance
Anton Mehl, please adjust your meds.
Do you know music?
@@lamotte44 Do you speak German? I do
@@Gochtoni language is not the only point here, beauty from voice and expression is to be considered, so definitely not a bad performance.
@@lamotte44 m.th-cam.com/video/2BYvvhznAI0/w-d-xo.html better singer ( no native German) and much better conductor
