At some point I just want a joke performance of this song where the music cuts after the “FIYERO!” and the actor playing him just flings open a door in the back of the theatre and yells “wHAT?!”
The riff was not written to show off the range of the voice. Its about emotion. To me that was portrayed beautifully by the original Idina Menzel and my personal favourite Jacqueline Hughes who i was very fortunate to see at the Sunderland Empire. She completely blew me away.
@@tyrakristiansen7188 but at the same time she showed the pain and emotion amazingly. If you can’t show your emotion while taking it up an octave or higher then stick to the original

Ok all of them are so great but could we talk about Danna Paola with only 17 years playing such a role like Elphaba en taking it to a whole new emotional level? Like... Dude, that's so powerful.
I personally feel like this moment in the song is supposed to symbolize a cry or scream for his name and isn’t the time for one to show off how high she can belt. It almost distracts from the emotion of the song, so that’s why I personally like the ones who stuck to the original notes, such as Idina (who will always be number 1 to me), but all these women are super talented, there’s no denying that!
Hannah Apostolico I feel that the high belt actually increases the intensity of the “scream” for example Jessica Vosk’s version shows a lot of despair in her voice but others such as Rachel tucker give off a more angry and regretful moment in the song so to be honest the high belt is actually better for portraying a “yell” or “scream “ in this moment
@@nasirroper4011 I can't find the video anymore, but the first version of Eden Espinosa's I saw was absolutely perfect with the high note in Fiyero. When she said, "Let all of Oz be agreed", she sounded JUST LIKE the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz movie!
To me, the riff is her screaming in agony and desperation for him and their vocals should reflect that. I’m sorry but that’s not the time to show of your range, that’s what Defying Gravity or the Wizard and I are for.
I though Eden Espinosa did good at both! She sung a real nice riff and brought a lot of power but her choreography and hand gestures brought a lot of emotion back into the subject of why she is screaming his name in the first place. But yes, completely agree but if an actress feels she can do both than let it roll! :)
1:27 Oak Joo-Hyun. She sounds broken, hurt, angry, and desperate all once. She completely owned it. 8:48 Lindsay Mendez. She showed such beautiful emotion and passion. Literally gave me goosebumps. It wasn’t really about hitting the higher notes for me. It was about emotion and complete passion.
I liked Danna's version at 4:50. She manages the power of the others while still throwing in some variation and nailing the emotion of the moment. It's also fun how the guitar player picks up on her energy and follows suit.
*Glinda And Fiyero standing on the bridge* Glinda: Fiyero... *Elphaba runs in, picks up Fiyero bride style, flips Glinda off and runs away screaming* Elphaba: FIYYEEEEEEEEEEEERROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Ock Joohyun is just generally so good! She sounds so hurt, angry and desperate. Also, She herself said she empathizes with the character Elphaba the most as she herself was always more of an outsider/outcast during her early idol/soloist career.
Idina will always be the best Elphaba in my heart and her riff here always gets me. She really is a performer first and foremost and her fiyero riff is so raw and vulnerable and exactly what she needs to portray Elphaba as in that moment - complete and utter devastation
This is so difficult because ANYBODY who can hit the notes in No Good Deed without modifying is a GOD in my book. It's also one of those songs that as the singer, you want to elevate and bring out your best belts, but it can be easy to overdo it as well. I've always really liked Eden in this song. Something about the strength and almost roughness of her voice really pulls the piece together for me, but she leaves it emotional without overpowering the message with runs or satellite pitches. ❤👍
ET Lover at 11 belting with a chest voice and power is nearly impossible. Also, once you can belt Defying Gravity, which is difficult for even college choir students, then you can really brag. So work on it and then come back and brag
Those who sang the original note (set by Idina Menzel herself) were the best to me. The riffs distracted from the urgency of the 'call' and made it seem like they were just showing off their singing ability. It is supposed to be delivered as a cry for Fiyero
Considering Idina Menzel set the standard...My Top Ten 1. Willemijn Verkaik- the spin in her sound was delicious...definitely cannot be topped 2. Shoshana Bean- the unique tone and approach to the belt was refreshing and gave a new feel 3. Alice Fearn- beautiful, Disney-esque type of nuances 4. Jessica Vosk- piercing quality on the highest pitch, reaches to the soul 5. Jacqueline Hughes- amazing full, rich tone 6. Stephanie J. Block- great control and interesting take on the riff 7. Eden Espinosa- almost soulful and gut-wrenching, powerful 8. Alyssa Fox- very pretty, great control and phrasing 9. Oak Joo-kyun- Dramatic!!!! Loved it! 10. Rachel Tucker- interesting take on the riff, powerful
See, it was meant to be Stephanie. She was the one who was meant to be the first person in the roll, and actually taught Shoshana how to sing Defying Gravity (Over the phone while standing on a busy street corner, too). I forget the specific reason why, but something came up, I think she had already been cast, and so they had to go with the next option on the line, Idina.
All of these are so hauntingly beautiful. That first Fiyero that sounds so broken then the RIFF that comes down like thunder and lighting or violent waves!
My all time favorites, Danna Paola and Indina Menzel. Because it’s very hard singing the note without changing it I tried it in my singing exam and it’s really hard, even as a soprano
she is my FAVORITE Elphaba of all time! When I first got into Wicked, I found a bootleg with her as Elphaba and Sebastian Arcelus as Fiyero and jeeeSUs christ its one of the best things I've ever seen cause I mean, THAT CHEMISTRY (duh)
Jillian Thomas yo if you still have that bootleg hmu with the link lol (and I actually didn't know Sebastian was Fiyero the same time she was Elphaba?? that's amazing hshfjahgf)
I like the ones who don't switch it up too much, like Kerry Ellis and Willemijn. When they start adding extra syllables and flourishes and changing the last note it sounds wrong to me. They all have great voices, but I feel like this part of the song shouldn't be changed.
They are all amazing singers but idk y I just don't like it when they go high on the end of your to instead if reaching the high note in the middle: I like: fiYEEEEERRRRROOOOOoooo Not: fiyeeerrOOOOOOOOO just my opinion
Totally agree! I personally feel like it’s a slap in the face to the original composer; “This one incredibly difficult belt is boring. Don’t worry, I made it better cuz it’s ME.” Like wtf?! Save your voice! You still have the rest of the act to finish!
@@podemosllegarasinsubirvi-os3jt hay gente de esa edad que es mucho mas talentosa, no subestimes a alguien de 17, lamentablemente no es el caso de esa ruca
I have to say Idina and Willemijn does that part justice. This song has many parts that can be over done and I feel like many of the other Elphabas did that. I never said the others weren’t good, just that it kinda killed the mood of the song.
My favorites are the the ones with the distraught, gruffy sounds at the end of their "Fiyero" like Shoshanna, Ock, Emma, Eden, Danna, etc. It adds so much realism and I was just hit by a wave of emotions every time I heard that growl you get when you scream. It's so intense.
I don't like how the majority of them took this as a chance to show off their singing range, rather than a chance to show their acting ability. There's plenty of chances to belt high and play around as elphaba and riffing works in the happier/more empowering songs, but this is a dark emotional song. Generally in musicals, higher belted notes are for happier moments (like at the end of the wizard and I and defying gravity), which means it just throws off the mood of the song if you go high during a sad bit, and putting in runs just doubles the distraction from what could be a really emotional moment, and going low(er) during this bit and on the end note of the song highlights how distraught she is and works in contrast to the wizard and I and defying gravity belting moments cause it feels more stilted. Obviously they're all great singers and most of the time the change of the note is probably down to directors choice, but the most impressive versions for me are the one's who stick to the three original notes and nail it cause its fucking difficult.
My favorites are Idina's and Shoshana's because they aren't seeing how how high they can belt and adding riffs to sound good. They are showing the emotion in their voices like they are screaming in pain for the person that's important that they have just lost.
Whils vocally they all sound amazing, I think it’s important that it is part of a musical and not a stand-alone song, those words have a meaning and by adding too many intricate tails and using it as a point to show off range cheapens it in my opinion, I think the original version sounds best from the perspective of the musical as it fits, however I would happily swap voices with anyone of these girls, amazing, everyone of them.
Can't choose one, so here are my faves 1. IDINA!!! she's number one for sure but all the others are in no particular order 2. Stephanie J Block 3. Jessica Vosk 4. Rachel Tucker (I saw her when I saw wicked on broadway so I might be biased hehe) 5. Willemijn Verkaik 6. Jacqueline Hughes 7. Linsay Menendez
I love Jacqueline Hughes because at the end she changes it up and instead of just showing that she can hit the high note at the end, she turns it into a scream or cry which just wrenches my heart all over
Eden was the first to do the riff higher than the original run. I will say, the clip the person used is awful. There are other clips of Eden singing “No Good Deed” on TH-cam that are way better. I saw her live twice, and I almost jumped out of my chair at the Fiyero riff. She was brilliant live.
Idina is obviously the queen, *BUT* Danna Paola, Shoshana Bean, Jessica Vosk, and Jacqueline Hughes all give me life. 😍 Unpopular opinion: I didn't like Eden's. The first note she hit didn't sound right. Anyone agree? 🤷♀
Jessica Vosk nailed it. Kept the resonant (almost) scream note, then brought out the high note at the end. Sounded like an exclamation rather than a high note, and that’s what I love. The emotion!!!!
no doubt everyone here is talented, but let’s take a moment to appreciate the ladies who prioritized the acting of the moment to an equal degree that they held the vocal capability. this song is probably one of the biggest acting moments in the show and i adore runs that reflect the _motivation_ behind the riff
Idina Menzel. HANDS DOWN!! (All of them were AWESOME, those are some powerful voices, but she is BY FAR my favorite, and always will be! I really feel like I get the most gut wrenching emotion from Idina!)
Donna Vivino though not in this video but understandable considering how hard it is to find one of her performances but she is my favorite as far as the Fiyero riff goes. Her acting throughout the song and the way she throws herself onto the floor is phenomenal! I fall in love with the song every time I see her performance of it.
@@nasirroper4011 that's literally your opinion which is fine whatever but I know idina is an amazing singer [my opinion] I have seen it. She is older now but in her prime she was amazing she originated two iconic roles maureen and elphaba.
I’ve only seen Jessica Vosk live and I’m sticking with her lmao Everyone is great and talented but jess will forever be my special bean Nikki Davis Jones was also amazing
My very first experience with this musical was seeing Jessica Vosk's final performance as Elphaba and I have since become utterly obsessed with the show, so I pretty much have to give it to her. Not the most objective of reasons I suppose, but I stand by it.
I saw Jessica Vosk as Elphaba on Broadway in March and she was stellar and will always be my #1 because of that. Listening to these, they're all absolutely amazing because I know I could never even try to hit these notes, but personally, I prefer the riffs like Idina's and Jessica's, not the modified ones. They seem more powerful and emotional to me.
Who decides there was basically one way to modify that riff? 90% of them same thing just at a slightly different time. Only a few sang it as written or with any originality.
Willemijn Verkaik is truly the queen of Wicked. She has played Elphaba in four different countries (Germany, The Netherlands, Broadway and West End), in three different languages for seven (!!!) years + an extra run on West End in 2017. She not only played Elphaba, she IS Elphaba!
Clearly Rachel Tucker is the best. She is the most amazing Elphaba ever. Her ending to defying gravity and no good deed are so strong and are just like yassss
Got half way through the video waiting for my queen, Kerry Ellis, had to scan ahead to ensure she was included. I'm also super intrigued by the non-English inclusions; gorgeous in any language, this is truly my favorite song from this musical!

Shephanie j block has my vote tbh what amazing tone I love that queen
OMG it just hit me the Felicia Ricci at 3:00 is the same one who teaches vocal lessons right here on TH-cam!!!
Jessica Vosk!! She nailed that high note without the slightest crack or screech. Her voice is perfection!
this reminds me of a part of heathers when Chandler (Charissa Hogeland does) shouts *"VeroniCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHH"* 😂
sunny hye. Same, but with polar opposite energy
Can't choose one, so here are my faves
1. IDINA!!! she's number one for sure but all the others are in no particular order
2. Stephanie J Block
3. Jessica Vosk
4. Rachel Tucker (I saw her when I saw wicked on broadway so I might be biased hehe)
5. Willemijn Verkaik
6. Jacqueline Hughes
7. Linsay Menendez
I love Jacqueline Hughes because at the end she changes it up and instead of just showing that she can hit the high note at the end, she turns it into a scream or cry which just wrenches my heart all over
Easily 7:47 Jessica Vosk owned that note
exactly
Romannesque I couldn’t agree more!
Exactly
i just saw her last night and i’d like to say, she hadn’t changed her riff! it was so incredible seeing her live!!
god i love her so much
The fact that Shoshana did that on A SICK DAY already ranks her high.
Is it just me or does Eden’s first not on Fiyero sound off?
So very flat. Painfully so.
It was a Db instead of an Eb i think ):
Eden was the first to do the riff higher than the original run. I will say, the clip the person used is awful. There are other clips of Eden singing “No Good Deed” on TH-cam that are way better. I saw her live twice, and I almost jumped out of my chair at the Fiyero riff. She was brilliant live.
I agree! Everyone’s saying she was the best but I can definitely hear it was off!
Completely agree
myra ruiz!!! mds que orgulho do brasil
That moment when you're watching a TH-cam video, and one of your favorite voice teachers shows up...lots of love to Fel!
She's really cool also
Mister Golightly Damn right she is!
Idina is obviously the queen, *BUT*
Danna Paola, Shoshana Bean, Jessica Vosk, and Jacqueline Hughes all give me life. 😍
Unpopular opinion: I didn't like Eden's. The first note she hit didn't sound right. Anyone agree? 🤷♀
Yeah it was really flat
Danna Paola me encanta
She was flat at first but ended up ending at a strong point
JESSICA VOSK IS MY FAVORITE ELPHABA PERIODT
yea, it sounded flat
Such a nice surprise to see Danna Paola from Netflix's "Élite" here 👏🏼
Jessica Vosk nailed it. Kept the resonant (almost) scream note, then brought out the high note at the end. Sounded like an exclamation rather than a high note, and that’s what I love. The emotion!!!!
Danna Paola ❤️❤️😍😍 was amazing!! I love her voice a LOT in Wicked she did in Mexico.
no doubt everyone here is talented, but let’s take a moment to appreciate the ladies who prioritized the acting of the moment to an equal degree that they held the vocal capability. this song is probably one of the biggest acting moments in the show and i adore runs that reflect the _motivation_ behind the riff
Idina Menzel. HANDS DOWN!! (All of them were AWESOME, those are some powerful voices, but she is BY FAR my favorite, and always will be! I really feel like I get the most gut wrenching emotion from Idina!)
4:52 Dana Paola extraordinaria como siempre.
Donna Vivino though not in this video but understandable considering how hard it is to find one of her performances but she is my favorite as far as the Fiyero riff goes. Her acting throughout the song and the way she throws herself onto the floor is phenomenal! I fall in love with the song every time I see her performance of it.
I have a video of Donna now! I'll upload the Fiyero riff
Mister Golightly That’s really exciting!!!! Yay!
Donna’s is my favorite too ❤️ Haha
I saw a bootleg with her, it was amazing!
I love Stephanie so much, I think she’s the perfect Elphaba, but also because the role was kinda created for her
A Very Confusified Sophie not kinda she was supposed to be the original but they swapped her out for that dying cat we know as Idina #ew
@@nasirroper4011 no way idina is amazing.
Gwen O lol nah idina can’t sing the role
A. C nah but Stephanie can sing and act the role where idina can only rely in her acting
@@nasirroper4011 that's literally your opinion which is fine whatever but I know idina is an amazing singer [my opinion] I have seen it. She is older now but in her prime she was amazing she originated two iconic roles maureen and elphaba.
4:22 Myra Ruiz
Vim pela Jéssica ballut kkkk

I’ve gotta say Jessica Vosk on this one. I love her and being able to see her on broadway was just absolutely amazing
I’ve only seen Jessica Vosk live and I’m sticking with her lmao
Everyone is great and talented but jess will forever be my special bean
Nikki Davis Jones was also amazing
Jessica is supposed to be her in the movie
They are all amazing, but to me the most impressive were Shoshana and Danna Paola, because Shoshana was sick and Danna Paola was only 17
Jessica Vosk is my queen she slays those notes EVERY SINGLE TIME
As an elphaba, I really cannot fault Alice Fearn! She is amazing in every sense and I idolise thst woman
Jacqueline Hughes, Alice (who I just saw a week ago and is officially my favorite Elphaba) and Rachel were my faces here
Jessica Vosk is truly amazing. Such a voice!!
Jacqueline Hughes snatched my weave!
Willemijn Verkaik. Oh Wiz. Seen her in 3 countries and 3 languages...that. woman. witch. voice.
Agreed
Willemijn for sure. She has anger in it what makes it amazing
Danna Paola's power...so proud of my girl😌😌
thank you for adding jessica vosk!!!! she is the best
Jacqueline Hughes Had Me Shook 8:20 😂
My very first experience with this musical was seeing Jessica Vosk's final performance as Elphaba and I have since become utterly obsessed with the show, so I pretty much have to give it to her. Not the most objective of reasons I suppose, but I stand by it.
OMG same!
Danna Paola was amazing!!!!
How is no one talking about Jennifer Dinoia? I saw her live and she was phenomenal!
That Insane Fangirl THANK YOU!!! Most criminally underrated elphaba. Y'all are sleeping on Jen D.
Thank you! Jenny Dinoia is amazing! She taught me at a camp. She's an amazing person and a really talented singer.
I saw her in London in January 2015 and I have not stopped thinking about her since
certainly Myra Ruiz was my favorite... her belting is perfect!
My favorites were Eden, Oak Joo-hyun, Alice, Jessica, Jacqueline, Rachel, and Willemijn!! 💚💚
We’re gonna need an updated version with Cynthia next year
Count on it!
When she said "Fiyero"
I felt that.
Jessica Vosk was the best if you’ve ever seen her on Broadway she gives you the goosebumps every time she sings. I LOVE Jessica Vosk so much.
Shoshana was my favorite. The pain in her voice kills me
Willemijn Verkaik is truly the queen of Wicked.
Oscar Gosling having seen her 6 times she isn’t all that
Oscar Gosling Yes, Rachel is the best, and one of my favourite Elphaba's next to Willemijn, Donna, Alexia and Kerry.
I personally like Alice
emma courtney I haven't seen Alice live yet, but I've heard audio clips of her singing, and I want to go and see her
Elphaba Thropp she's incredible
I saw Alice Fearn live a few weeks ago and I'm still blown away by her talent!
Willemijn ist my queen forever😊 I watched her in different musicals, she is just amazing
This is my top fav song from wicked as the notes and emotion in it is amazing ❤❤
That video of Shoshana singing No Good Deed is my favorite video on TH-cam 👌🏻
She had a really high fever while singing it in that video too!
Mister Golightly I know!! 😂
Got half way through the video waiting for my queen, Kerry Ellis, had to scan ahead to ensure she was included. I'm also super intrigued by the non-English inclusions; gorgeous in any language, this is truly my favorite song from this musical!
YAASSSS
im in love with Rachel Tucker
shoshana has had my heart since 6th grade she is such a talent, truly one of the best theatre actresses of this century in my opinion
Lorelei Wernecke agreed I just posted about her on my insta saying about how I wanted to do a riff with high fever
I saw Jessica Vosk and she is THE BEST EVER!! From a vocal point of view her voice is not only powerful but beautiful as well
I feel like Sho really captured the emotion in her riff, and the yell at the end sent chills up my spine
where was donna vivino? but i do love willemijn and shoshana
I didn't found one for Donna but if you found one or anyone pls leave me a link :)
Mister Golightly i know she does it a bit in obsessed with seth rudetsky? it's not a performance though
Here's no good deed with Donna:

I am in love with her acting choices, the way she falls to the floor is amazing!
WOW! Where did you get it? The quality is amazing and her riff wow, just wow. Wish I had the clip before so I could include it
Mister Golightly The clip is included in the No Good Deed supercut by theatermania
Lindsay Mendez to me is THE MOST underrated actress on broadway. Period.
I agree I adore her so much.
Kerry Ellis. I just love how she approaches all of the dialogue and songs.
I saw Rachel Tucker on Broadway and she was wonderful!!! 🙌🏼💕👏🏼
