Great way to teach your children the value of the dollar in the real world. Not many parents do this for their kids and they end up taking everything for granted going out on their own.
So true. I won't say my kids aren't growing up with a lot of privilege, because they are, but we're trying to keep them humble and kind and give them some life skills. :)
I agree! I bring my 8 year old with me and also show her how to compare prices per 100g between items, how to make a grocery budget and stick to it using the envelope budgeting method. Skills like this will probably be more useful to her life than learning about trigonometry 😂
I grew up in the 70s and my mom took all three of her kids grocery shopping on Saturday after cartoons twice a month. The price stickers were right on the packages and at one store we had to write them on the item we were buying. We each received a quarter a week allowance and even if we combined our allowances, we couldn't afford to get a box of PopTarts. Mom taught us the value of money without even making a point of it.
She is right about learning to cook. I just recently found a page that explained how to cook rice properly (we do it very different here in Belgium) and it's the best rice I've ever had. I also found a page that explained how to cook eggs the right way and that is also something SO BASIC but very important to learn. I can't cook the fancy meals if I don't even know how to properly cook rice/eggs/ the basics.
My family has been cooking rice wrong for a very, very, very long time. One important step is to rinse the rice before cooking. Never knew you were supposed to. My daughter uses a rice cooker and it makes perfect rice every time.
Learning how to cook is KEY! I just learned last week that my 17 y/o niece doesn't even know how to turn the stove on. I was literally speechless. I appreciate you doing these "basic knowledge" type videos because some people really don't know!
I’m single and recently retired. I like you and Southern Frugal Momma for this kind of content. When I was working I ate a lot of frozen entrees because I was tired and I didn’t have an army to feed. Now I like to seal individual portions of meat in foodsaver bags and cook just enough for dinner.
Summer fruit is the best. The berries! The watermelon! The nectarines! I have raspberry bushes and a huge peach tree in my backyard and can't wait to make jam and pie filling with those. 😊
thank you so much mindy for considering those of us who didn’t have that role model in the kitchen. my parents split up when i was a tween so mom was working all the time and my siblings and i were left to figure it out with basics like cereal milk and eggs. this was pre-youtube time. so now that i am a mom of 3 i struggled a lot in the beginning of my marriage because i was basically clueless in the kitchen. youtube has really helped me and i am especially thankful for finding your channel. from pantry clean outs to budget meals, i try them all! my favorite thing to do is cook a whole chicken in my crockpot!! so many recipe options! some family members still can’t believe i do that lol but i will say the more i have tried this and that the more comfortable and confident i am and i know i can pass on my tips and tricks i’ve learned to the next gen or whoever asks! tysm mindy ♥️
I remember being young and having a small budget for food and stretching every dollar. I got my bread at the bread outlet, I coupon😢ed, and cooked from scratch. I would have loved your channel. Thanks for your amazing content.
Mindy you are so right about teaching our children to purchase groceries and learn to cook. My boys most often went grocery shopping and it was just part of going that we found the best bargains. Now that they are grown and have their own families they easily shop and cook. They know how to make bread, tortillas, use dry beans, plain rice and add spices and seasonings to make them tasty! During holidays it’s fun to all be in the kitchen cooking together!
Very practical! When I was still teaching high school, I would often have conversations with young teachers, who truly were unaware of some of the things you could do to save money. They really appreciated the conversations around the table when we all share ideas.
Congrats on 5 years!! I was born in 85. My mom didn’t teach me how to cook. Both of her ex husbands can cook but they didn’t teach me. I had to learn how to cook. My mom and sister tell me how good of a cook I am. My youngest and I were on WIC and we had gotten dried and canned beans and I relied on the recipes on the bag or cans in order to cook them so I didn’t waste them. It’s a learning experience.
Mindy, your two tips are so right. Keeping the basics on hand in a well-stocked kitchen is vital. But by pointing out that people need to just Cook: SO imporatant. In my years of experience, as with any skill, the more you cook, the better you get. You just need to get in there and do it. You learn from your mistakes, you learn how to do it better/more flavorful the next time. Over time, you get better and better. I rarely follow a recipe now but use it as a guideline. I can read a recipe and know what works and what is good for our tastes, and how to adjust and still have the recipe turn out. That all comes from experience, but it's also fun! My kids would ask what is this dish called, and I told them it's Mom's Surprise because I just glanced at a recipe and threw something together with what I had on hand.
I'm the same way, Mary. I often can just glance at something for an idea and then adjust it for us, or even just look at the ingredients. I'm not a professional by any means, but I'm a little better at it than I used to be! :)
Mindy.... the tosted bread with mashed up beans n cheese is a real thing... in Mexico they're called moyetes. You toast the bread , each individual slice, spread refried beans on it and top with cheese until melted... in Mexico it can be breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Yeah learning to cook is a must. When you learn to cut a person can change up what they eat. One of the youngest Gen X here. When you grew up with your mom working 40+ hrs a week it was basically the same foods all the time. One summer my mom told me since you’re home all summer long then you can learn how to cook. She regrets doing this because she didn’t like some of the meals. I’d reach to some of the cookbooks we had at the time.
Congratulations!!! ❤ I really appreciate that you put the effort in to keep things up to date. I know that takes up extra time. And removing a best-watched video because the pricing was no longer applicable?! You really are a sweetheart. You’re genuine, and you’ve got a lifetime subscriber in me!
Thank you for mentioning those who are cooking challenged. I'm a Gen X'er but never gravitated to cooking. That's why i'm watching all.your.videos for motivation! Thank you!
i love how you make budgeting with cooking both realistic and creative! when i was first learning how to cook on food stamps, i wasnt really sure how to utilize different food groups and brands so i ended up just making the same things all the time. now i still buy the same ingredients, but through resourcefulness i can make different dishes out of them! thank you for a brilliant channel that inspires many ❤
Your videos have been so helpful to me. I do know how to cook but we spent the past 5 years without a working oven, only a stovetop and we had a grill. It's a long and sort of sad tale but suffice it to say we now have a working oven so my cooking game has really changed. Because of that i really spent the past 5 years not buying lots of things and we did rely quite heavily on convince foods but now I'm doing SO much more cooking and i'm trying to make sure i don't freak out and spend a ton of money 😂 Your videos have helped me remember how to shop like a normal person and spend wisely. Thank you so much for all you do to help us. Everyone's situation is a little different but your content is helping a broad range of people.
Most of college was a complete waste of my time, but we only had about 5 tv channels in the dorm so I watched Chopped marathons for 3 years and learned how to throw random stuff together to make amazing meals. It's been so helpful lately with inflation really cutting into our food budget! WIC appointments are 3 months out right now in my area and food pantries are running out because there's just so many more families in need. I'm already showing my 3 year old how to cook so she knows these valuable skills when she grows up.
Big money saving tip.. dont buy steam in the bag veggies! Pampered chef has a microwave steamer pot and get the big bags of generic frozen veggies. It's at least half the cost for twice the amount and it is just as easy. Yes it makes one extra dish but worth the cost savings! Amazon has them too, but if all you have is a glass bowl and a lid, that works too!!
Yes yes yesss! Everything you say is so correct! I’m on the older side of being a Millennial and you’re so right! Most of my adult life has consisted of eating and making convenience foods. I’m still a sucker for frozen ravioli but in my 30’s I’ve started cooking more once I realized it isn’t too, too hard and the ingredients can be much better-even when partially made from scratch or just plain cooked like frozen veggies. Also yes-it started after 2020 when stuff I normally bought was out of stock and and since prices started going up.
I'm a really good cook and I have learned so much from your videos. So even if you can cook there's still so much more to learn! Thanks for sharing. Plus I love your older videos. I watch them a lot! They are a treasure trove of knowledge on cooking. 😀
I recently became celiac with other food allergies, so I am relearning how to cook. I love watching your channel for info and also to live vicariously thru you, gluten wise 😂 looking forward to many more videos! Much love from Oklahoma City ❤
A gluten free brownie recipe you'll love!! 1 cup oil 2/3 cup cocoa powder 4 eggs 1/2 tsp salt 2 cups powdered sugar. Mix the oil, cocoa powder, and salt until cocoa powder is fully dissolved. Then whisk in eggs until the consistency of mayo or pudding. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar. It will dissolve into the mixture giving you a normal batter consistency. Pour into a greased 8x8 pan. Bake 350°F 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. These are soooo good!! You can also mix in chocolate chips or nuts just before you pour them into the baking dish, if you like them in brownies 😊
Same here. I try to cook enough at one time to freeze several more meals so that I'm not bored with eating the same thing until it's gone. It's hard sometimes finding the incentive to cook for just myself. I cooked for my husband for nearly fifty-four years and now, being widowed for five years, it's been hard to adjust to cooking just for one. I am diligent about keeping a stockpile, though. Congratulations 🎉 on 5 years. Heres to a lot more. Thanks. Your so right. My grandmother and mother always taught me to always have eggs, butter, milk, rice, flour and potatoes in the house. She told from those items you could make handfuls of food to get by. They're staples. Your tips are invaluable thanks.
I think People need to remember to freeze and or use leftover food items before shopping too. I just Cleaned out my fridge, freezers and pantry. I found So many recipe ideas and found food that I didn't remember having!
Another thing to think about is you can buy enough to make all those meals then it might be $14.44 a few times but will still be a great savings for MANY days! Now I'd like to know how you did the home made noodles say about holiday time. I didn't get my grandmas cookbook and my memory is forgotten it lol ❤️
It's important to be clear that convenience is a luxury for many, but for some disabled folks, it may be the *only* option to eat a hot meal on some or all days. It's making the best of your money in your current circumstances. I say this because we can sometimes emphasise convenience foods to the extent we can shame folks who require them to function.
I love how you reiterate using the local library. It's such a great FREE tool. You can learn pretty much anything with one, including how to cook and make budget meals. I also love how you reiterate using your local food pantry, if one is available. Thank you Mindy.
I am 31 and grew up on frozen food with my single working mom. I used to work full time and we combined take out, easy meals, with the occasional regular meal, but I just made the decision to stay at home with my two kids (4 and 7months) and one of my goals is to use this time I get to have with my kids and family to learn how to cook and scratch and batch cook to save us both time and money in the long term. Where did you learn all of your tips and tricks and do you have any advice for someone who is just getting started?
Hello MindyMom, nice video today. Very important to have your children involved in the grocery buying process. I am the last of the boomers and i recently obtained an instant pot! Just be able to follow, read, comprehend a recipe that walks a person through the process! I am a slowcooker super star! Thank you for this info today!
ha, a lot of people I know don't know how to cook. Luckily for me, my dad was born in 1949 and cooked for our local fair and weddings, etc. He taught me how to cook. I'm 32 and he's passed now but I am forever thankful I know how to cook.
Been loving your "What you can do" choices with your videos lately. Not only does it do the same thing as your other budget menus by showing us how to eat for days on the cheap, it shows us how we can find variety in the basic staples, too. I love that.
Congrats Mindy on 5 years!! I have loved watching your channel, and learning some really good tips, tricks, and ideas on meals and grocery shopping. I want to try and purchase your capsule meal plan and your other ebooks, but right now my budget won't allow it... we are having to have our roof replaced so gotta cut back and your videos help a lot. Thanks so much for all you do!! God bless you and your family.
My kids are 19 now (twins) and growing up I had them in the kitchen plus all the extra kids that are always here! I thought I was a mean mom, but was told they loved it! I taught all to cook! And to clean up after!
I understand you deciding to take that video off of “rotation.”But I think it would still hold usefulness today, even with these prices. Your channel is full of jumping-off-points and I think that’s exactly what most people need today. “Jumping off points” can address the same problem across many different demographics. That’s why l keep coming back to your channel; you offer the kind of advice that inspires people to get creative and to actually think things through. You’ve definitely inspired me in the kitchen and l’m old enough to be your MUCH older sister! 😂 Great video as usual friend! 😁
Can you do more budget videos with the crockpot? I have a broken arm and find cooking easier with a crockpot. I have been utilizing my snap benefits. I am doing a bean recipe today.
God bless you for all you do. We are really struggling right now. But we don't qualify for anything. It's so hard. We don't go out much at all. We live in a tiny rural area. Churches can't help. I know there are people having it harder than we are. I wish so much that I was able to help others. I'm sorry for being a downer. You have blessed so many of us. Congratulations on 5 years. Here's to 5+ more years
Congrats for 5 yrs! Can you direct me to your video on how to soak and cook dry beans in the crock pot? Thanks so much for all the inspirations and great recipes!
Thank you Mindy! I have learned so many great tips and tricks from watching your channel for so many years. I’ve been married 37 years and still need to be inspired and motivated to keep cooking. Keep up the good work. ❤️
You can take the cooked beans and make pinto bean 🥧. When I first got married and things were tight it made a great pie. Taste like pecan pie without the pecans. We loved it.
Great tortual video!! When I was in school, we had Home Economics class, and we were taught the basic cooking / cleaning. I loved it. I don't know if they even have Economics Classes in schools. Congratulations Mindy !! 5 years
At the high schools where I taught, it was called "Family Consumer Sciences", and it really depended on the teacher. If she was really fun and good teacher, the kids loved those classes!
Hey love your content, i've been following you for awhile. Since I noticed you do a ton of Mexican *Inspired* dishes, I thought you'd like Molletes (you mentioned making a bean sandwhich) everyone makes them differently depending on which region of Mexico they/their ancestors are from. I do them with birote (french bread will do; baquette) mashed black beans, cotija and pico de gallo. Oh, and sliced avocado takes it next level.
My Mom cooked, I watched the younger kids or did chores or homework. Cooking is not my gift. Variety is difficult as is spending time cooking (back injury), so I appreciate getting ideas online. I don't think we ever had dried beans, so I need to learn how to do them (and season them). I'm trying to spend less, and eat healthier as well as lose weight ... new habits. I was a convenience (single) Mom for most of my adulthood. Thank you for sharing & blessing! GBU❤😊
My budget is very tight rn. I buy frozen bell pepper and onion mix among other frozen veg. I can pull out just what I need for a recipe. I don't forget them in the fridge, I have no waste whatsoever. In the long run, it saves me $$. I'm using more ground turkey 'cause cheaper. I hit it with a bit of worcestershire sauce as I'm cooking. It takes away some of the turkey "whang" and gives it a beefier flavor. I also buy the rolls of turkey breakfast sausage, because of the seasoning in it, and use it as I would ground beef.
You are still a baby my kid born 86 my mother could not cook at all very bad cook my older sister did alot of the cooking. I taught my mom how to use coupons dad in military base grocer store took expired coupons. I had the hole street give me expired coupons. We got so much free food taught my .mom to cook before I got married and moved out. Learned to cook utube and cooking shows and love your videos thanks ❤😊
though, I don't eat meat and eggs, I really like this content and the suggestions. good ones, for a lot of people and I would recomment them too for sure
Congratulations on 5 years. You've helped me make more budget friendly meals for my hubby and I. I even share the ideas with my youngest bonus son and his family. They're expecting our newest granddaughter next month unless things change. She's having a few health hiccups.
Thank you for another excellent video. It is amazing the number of young people moving into their first solo spaces who cannot use washing machines! If I had children I would introduce them to doing their own laundry from maybe 15-ish. I would not represent it to them as a 'punishment' but as a reward, a gift they receive as part of the growing up process! Just my thoughts. I feel sorry for the newly solo living teenagers. It is stressful enough for them being on their own without needing to worry about so many practical things they could easily have learnt years earlier! Thank you for the video!
Congrats on five years! I've been following for a while and am still shocked at the increase in cost. You need a t-shirt made that says WWMD What would Mindy do?
@@SeeMindyMom I took my oldest son with me to the grocery store today. He saw the prices. I said see why I bought Dr. Thunder for Dr. Pepper & Sam's cola for Coke?! 😂 He's like Yea I like that Dr. Thunder too. I'm like Awesome!! That's about half the price as his fave Dr. Pepper. Now if we can find a generic chip he likes lol I'm like boy we're too broke for your name brand foods lol He's trying though :) 🥰 We have a household of special needs kids and it's hard sometimes for them to try new foods or different brands, but slowly were getting there. My oldest has food aversions and anxiety so it's got to be a gentle push sometimes. I wish my kids would just eat whatever I make, but that's not the case. In a large family it's hard bc not everyone likes the same things.

She told from those items you could make handfuls of food to get by. They're staples. Your tips are invaluable thanks.
Congratulations on 5 years . Thank u for all the tips on saving money and creative ways of cooking , wishing u many more yrs ♥️
Congratulations on 5 years Mindy! You're such a wealth of knowledge and common sense and TH-cam is better with you on it. 🎉
Wow! Thanks so much for the kind words! :)
I think People need to remember to freeze and or use leftover food items before shopping too. I just Cleaned out my fridge, freezers and pantry. I found So many recipe ideas and found food that I didn't remember having!
Yep! I agree. :)
Egg noodles are fairly straight forward, they just require a lot of elbow grease. :)
Congrats on 5 years!! Hope you plan on sticking around for a long time!! LOVE your channel!
Thank you! I plan to keep going as long as the Lord allows it. :)
I learned through experience and experimentation and by watching others. :)
Congratulations on 5 years and thanks for all you do and share!
I do stick check add ingredients to shop and make meal prepps
I just discovered your page and realized that you shop at a store that’s local to my area! Thanks for your tips!
This is a video that should be seen 'round the world. Many are missing the basics and I really think it would help so many. Excellent video!
ha, a lot of people I know don't know how to cook.
Thank you so much! That's what I'm going for with this style of video. The whole "teach a man to fish" thing. :)
Amazing as always. Congratulations lady, you are at the top of my fave for many reasons. Your thoughtfulness and compassion are always present.❤
Congratulations on five great years. I am a newer viewer, but I love watching your videos.
Thank you so much! Glad you found me. :)
Congratulations on 5 great years. I love to watch your videos especially for budget friendly meals. God Bless You and your family.😊❤
Mary shoot me an email if you want the ebooks. I'll send them to you. seemindymom@yahoo.com
Happy TH-cam anniversary Mindy! I look forward to watching the next 5 years! ❤
My kids are 19 now (twins) and growing up I had them in the kitchen plus all the extra kids that are always here! I thought I was a mean mom, but was told they loved it! I taught all to cook! And to clean up after!
I really really need to start watching more of your videos
Thanks
Cook dry bean add tin corn frozen peas tin tomatoe soup serve with curry rice yummmy
Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement. You've been with me a while, and I thank you for your support and kind words!
Got blue 💙 berries and strawberries both 1 dollar each got 4 each prime days at Amazon fresh today on tommow alot
Thank you for this Mindy!! Our household is so reliant on take out and such, hopefully less now. I have a yearning to make taquitos now. lol
Here's to 5+ more years
5 years and congrats!!!!!!
Congrats for 5 yrs! Can you direct me to your video on how to soak and cook dry beans in the crock pot? Thanks so much for all the inspirations and great recipes!
Wow……
I really enjoyed this video……….with prices sky rocketing, I am so glad to find your channel.
Congratulations on 5 years Mindy! Thanks for the great videos ❤
Congratulations on 5 wonderful years of your delicious recipes and ideas !!! a love you bunches 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Thank you Mindy! I have learned so many great tips and tricks from watching your channel for so many years. I’ve been married 37 years and still need to be inspired and motivated to keep cooking. Keep up the good work. ❤️
Thank you so much for those kind words, and congratulations on 37 years! :)
You always have great ideas! Thanks for putting my thinking cap on. ❤❤❤
Thank you, really like all your videos ,appreciate all your help and time you put in them,Teresa in Mn
Thanks for watching!
You can take the cooked beans and make pinto bean 🥧. When I first got married and things were tight it made a great pie. Taste like pecan pie without the pecans. We loved it.
Oh that's so interesting! I hadn't heard of that!
We need that recipe.
Please post recipe! Do you mash up the beans with sugar cinnamon and nutmeg?
🎉 Congratulations on 5 fantastic years on your channel! I am always learning how to improve my culinary skills with the help of you. 👍 Thanks ❤️😉🙏
Love your video I've made a few of your dishes they were glad
Love this video. I like the simplicity of it. Everything gets used
Congrats on your 5 year mark! Thanks for making great videos for us!
Thanks so much!
Hi Cathy!! Love your savings challenge videos! Scramble looks super fun! I may have to give that one a try!
Sounds delicious!
Oh that sounds delicious! Yes, definitely up my alley. 😊
GBU❤😊
Thanks. You just helped me figure out what to have for lunch, Mindy! 😉
My pleasure!
I always love these educational videos.
Glad to hear it!
Mindy and family have a great day have fun thanks from Oklahoma
Thanks, Sherry! You, too!
So grateful for this info. Prepping for a disruption in income.
though, I don't eat meat and eggs, I really like this content and the suggestions. good ones, for a lot of people and I would recomment them too for sure
Congratulations 🎉🎉 !!! I love everything about your channel. Keep up the good work 👍🏼 !!!
Ah, thanks! I appreciate that. :)
Your welcome!!
I’d love to see what you could come up for $15 but while food plant based meals.
Congratulations on 5 years. You've helped me make more budget friendly meals for my hubby and I. I even share the ideas with my youngest bonus son and his family. They're expecting our newest granddaughter next month unless things change. She's having a few health hiccups.
Thanks so much for watching! Prayers for a safe delivery and health for mom and baby. :)
@@SeeMindyMom you're so very welcome. Thank you. We appreciate all the prayers.
You are amazing as always! Love your videos. God bless and have a great day!
Thank you for your ideas! I will put them to use!
Congratulations on FIVE years creating content on TH-cam, Mindy! 🥳🥳🥳
Thank you so much!!
I cut back on the not needed items (my luxuries) like pickles, olives, salad dressings (I make my own) & sauces.
My kids do their own laundry now and my youngest is 9! :)
Great tips! One person can eat quite a while with those items.
Congrats on five years! I've been following for a while and am still shocked at the increase in cost. You need a t-shirt made that says WWMD What would Mindy do?
In a tight spot its steam vegies with gravey omoleyte toast with beans stee
Do you have a link to yr video cooking a chicken in crockpot?
I love cooking.
Yes please ❤
Congrats on the 5 yr anniversary on You tube!
Congrats on 5yrs!! 5️⃣🥳
I've learned so much from your channel 💝
I've really enjoyed your videos 💝
Thank you so much!!
@@SeeMindyMom I took my oldest son with me to the grocery store today. He saw the prices. I said see why I bought Dr. Thunder for Dr. Pepper & Sam's cola for Coke?! 😂
He's like Yea I like that Dr. Thunder too. I'm like Awesome!! That's about half the price as his fave Dr. Pepper.
Now if we can find a generic chip he likes lol
I'm like boy we're too broke for your name brand foods lol
He's trying though :) 🥰
We have a household of special needs kids and it's hard sometimes for them to try new foods or different brands, but slowly were getting there. My oldest has food aversions and anxiety so it's got to be a gentle push sometimes.
I wish my kids would just eat whatever I make, but that's not the case. In a large family it's hard bc not everyone likes the same things.
