  • Emmanuel Krivine conducts the Orchestre national de France performing the Ouverture du Roi d'Ys by Edouard Lalo. Concert recorded live on 13 September 2018, at the Radio France Auditorium, Paris.
A contemporary of Gounod, Lalo composed three operas (Fiesque, Le Roi d’Ys and La Jacquerie, completed by Arthur Cocquard) and the ballet Namouna. His opera Le Roi d’Ys, telling the story of two sisters enamoured with the same man, is inspired by a Breton legend. Though first performed in 1888 by the Opéra Comique, the first symphonic page of the score was first heard eight years earlier during the Concerts Pasdeloup.
The overture follows a classical structure: it opens with an Andante ben sostenuto by the strings, soon enriched by two melodies given to the oboe and the clarinet. The Allegro that follows breaks from the stifling atmosphere with a supremely eloquent fanfare, but also with a brief quote from Tannhäuser. Hommage or irony? An Andantino with a tender cello solo is briefly heard amidst this violent framework, but an Allegro followed by a conclusive Presto have the last laugh. Much like the waves beating at the walls of the city of Ys.

This overture is one of Lalo's finest orchestral pieces with some unusual harmonic relationships, a lyrical solo cello and an electrifying extended conclusion with exciting triple-tonguing from the brass.

Absolutely fantastic overture, the work has a hint of Berlioz from whom I think the composer got inspiration. Wonderful playing (superb solo cellist)and as usual from Emmanuel Krivine outstanding conducting.

Merveilleux orchestre et belle interprétation de Krivine, malgré son horrible technique. Il est musicien, c'est ce qui compte.

Sensational playing - I heard what sounded like an errant bass drum on the last chord but I couldn't see the percussionist playing ? maybe just a strange noise - Thoughts ?

what you are hearing is the conductor's foot stomping on the podium a split second before the downbeat!

Great recording (finally, a video of a live performance), but what's that weird bang during the silence just before the last note! Bass drum looks to be in time, but it sounds like him.

Pour moi, une belle découverte. Je ne connaissais que vaguement le nom, car sans doute il y eut un disque de cire chez ma grand-mère. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89douard_Lalo .
