Two words. Alice. Cooper. When Alice met KISS for the first time he famously said, "What you guys need is a gimmick!" Fact is, members of KISS went to see Alice Cooper band at MSG (Madison Square Garden) and that night they decided they would be "four Alice Coopers."

If you look at the variations in the four original members makeup and stage costumes, you see a combination of Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Slade, and Ziggy Stardust era Bowie.

I “heard” that Kiss realized nobody was coming to their shows and they saw the New York Dolls and Alice Cooper and thought with a lot of make up and a lot more “talent” someone could really make a lot of money. Maybe that’s nonsense but if you look at Paul Stanley’s early eye makeup he had a Batman/Zorro thing going on at first.

Never really liked Kiss. The music sounds hollow, but I like a few of their songs...Detroit Rock City is a standout. However, Dimebag loved them so if they met Dime's seal of approval, then cool.
